Abstract:Studies the optimal guaranteed control problem for a class of linear uncertain time-delay systems. The systems under consideration are described by state differential equations with time-varying unknown but norm-bounded uncertain parameters and time-varying unknown but bounded delay in states. An upper bound of the performance measured by standard quadratic function is constructed and based on the delay-dependent stabilizing approach, a method of designing a state feedback robust quadratic stabilizing control law guaranteeing this quadratic performance index be less than the constructed upper bound is derived. A procedure is given to select an optimal state feedback controller in the sense of minimizing this upper bound of the quadratic performance index. The results depend on the size of delay and are given in terms of several linear matrix inequalities

Abstract:In this paper, we study an optimal control problem arising in plasma transport which is governed by a singularly perturbed system. Time-scale separation allows us to focus on an uncoupled parabolic PDE with diffusivity-interior-boundary actuation. We prove the existence of the optimal control solution and carry out numerical experiments using quadratic programming (SQP).

Abstract:This paper proposes a new control synthesis approach for the stabilization of boundary-controlled parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs). In the proposed approach, the optimal boundary control is expressed in integral state feedback form with quadratic kernel function, where the quadratic's coefficients are decision variables to be optimized. We introduce a system cost functional to penalize both state and kernel magnitude, and then derive the cost functional's gradient in terms of the solution of an auxiliary “costate” PDE. On this basis, the output stabilization problem can be solved using gradient-based optimization techniques such as sequential quadratic programming. The resulting optimal boundary control is guaranteed to yield closed-loop stability under mild conditions. The primary advantage of our new approach is that the costate PDE is in standard form and can be solved easily using the finite difference method. In contrast, the traditional control synthesis approaches for boundary-controlled parabolic PDEs (i.e., the LQ control and backstepping approaches) require solving non-standard Riccati-type and Klein-Gorden-type PDEs.

Abstract:Optimal control of infinite dimensional systems is one of the central problems in the control of distributed parameter systems. With the development of high performance computers, numerical methods for optimal control design have regained attention and achieved significant progress, mostly in the form of open-loop solutions. We consider in this work an optimal control problem for a bilinear parabolic partial differential equation (PDE) system. Based on the optimality conditions derived from Pontryagin's maximum principle for a reduced-order model, and stated as a two-boundary-value problem, we propose an iterative scheme for suboptimal closed-loop control design. In each iteration step, we take advantage of linear synthesis methods to construct a sequence of controllers. The convergence of the controller sequence is proved in appropriate functional spaces. When compared with previous iterative schemes, the proposed scheme avoids repeated numerical computation of the Riccati equation and therefore reduces significantly the number of ODEs that must be solved at each iteration step. A numerical simulation study shows the effectiveness of this new approach.

Abstract:This paper considers the linear-quadratic (LQ) optimal control problem for systems governed by a class of second-order parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs). This problem is significant in many areas of mathematics, control, engineering and so on, and thus has received great attention in the past decades. Different from the previous articles where the operator is applied to present the controller, the main contribution of this paper is to propose the discretisation-then-continuousization method, which is explicit and implementable. The solvability condition of the LQ optimal control problems is given based on a set of differential Riccati equations, and an explicit numerical calculation way of these equations and the design of the optimal controller are provided.

Abstract:A class of optimal control problems of hybrid nature governed by semilinear parabolic equations is considered. These problems involve the optimization of switching times at which the dynamics, the integral cost, and the bounds on the control may change. First- and second-order optimality conditions are derived. The analysis is based on a reformulation involving a judiciously chosen transformation of the time domains. For autonomous systems and time-independent integral cost, we prove that the Hamiltonian is constant in time when evaluated along the optimal controls and trajectories. A numerical example is provided.

Abstract:A minimax optimal control strategy for uncertain quasi-integrable Hamiltonian systems with time-delayed bounded feedback control is proposed. First, a quasi-integrable Hamiltonian system with time-delayed bounded control forces and uncertain excitation and system parameters is converted into a set of Itô stochastic differential equations without time delay. Then, the partially averaged Itô stochastic differential equations for the energy processes are derived by using the stochastic averaging method for quasi-integrable Hamiltonian systems. For these equations together with an appropriate performance index, a worst-case optimal control strategy is derived via solving a stochastic differential game problem. The worst-case disturbances and the optimal bounded controls are obtained by solving a Hamilton–Jacobi–Isaacs (HJI) equation. Finally, two examples are worked out in detail to illustrate the application and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper studies variational discretization for the optimal control problem governed by parabolic equations with control constraints. First of all, the authors derive a priori error estimates where $\left\| {\left| {u - U_h } \right|} \right\|_{L^\infty \left( {J;L^2 \left( \Omega \right)} \right)} = O\left( {h^2 + k} \right)$. It is much better than a priori error estimates of standard finite element and backward Euler method where $\left\| {\left| {u - U_h } \right|} \right\|_{L^\infty \left( {J;L^2 \left( \Omega \right)} \right)} = O\left( {h + k} \right)$. Secondly, the authors obtain a posteriori error estimates of residual type. Finally, the authors present some numerical algorithms for the optimal control problem and do some numerical experiments to illustrate their theoretical results.
Existence and relaxation for optimal control governed by steady, quasilinear PDEs

Abstract:We focus on optimal control problems governed by elliptic, quasilinear PDEs. Though there are various examples of such problems in the literature, we make an attempt at describing some general principles by dealing with three basic situations. In the first one, we assume that the state equation is variational; the second one focuses on a non-variational, monotone operator as state equation; finally, we add a non-linear term off the divergence part of the equation. In the first two cases, existence of optimal solutions can be established under suitable sets of assumptions, while relaxation is required for the third situation. Concerning the cost functional, and though more general examples can be dealt with, we will take a typical case consisting of two terms: one depending on the state, and another one of the form of a typical Thychonov regularization.

Abstract:We study a control problem governed by a semilinear parabolic equation with pointwise control and state constraints imposed at every point of the space-time cylinder. We obtain second order sufficient optimality conditions for local optimality in the sense of $L^2(Q)$. Our results are valid for spatial domains of dimension less than or equal to three.

Abstract:In this paper, the optimal strong error estimates for stochastic parabolic optimal control problem with additive noise and integral state constraint are derived based on time-implicit and finite element discretization. The continuous and discrete first-order optimality conditions are deduced by constructing the Lagrange functional, which contains forward-backward stochastic parabolic equations and a variational equation. The fully discrete version of forward-backward stochastic parabolic equations is introduced as an auxiliary problem and the optimal strong convergence orders are estimated, which further allows the optimal a priori error estimates for control, state, adjoint state and multiplier to be derived. Then, a simple and yet efficient gradient projection algorithm is proposed to solve stochastic parabolic control problem and its convergence rate is proved. Numerical experiments are carried out to illustrate the theoretical findings.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a class of infinite-dimensional optimal control problems, where the state equation is given by a stochastic delay evolution equation with random coefficients, and the corresponding adjoint equation is given by an anticipated backward stochastic evolution equation. We first prove the continuous dependence theorems for stochastic delay evolution equations and anticipated backward stochastic evolution equations, and show the existence and uniqueness of solutions to anticipated backward stochastic evolution equations. Then we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for optimality of the control problem in the form of Pontryagin’s maximum principles. To illustrate the theoretical results, we apply stochastic maximum principles to study two examples, an infinite-dimensional linear-quadratic control problem with delay and an optimal control of a Dirichlet problem for a stochastic partial differential equation with delay. Further applications of the two examples to a Cauchy problem for a controlled linear stochastic partial differential equation and an optimal harvesting problem are also considered.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate an optimal control problem governed by parabolic equations with measure-valued controls over time. We establish the well-posedness of the optimal control problem and derive the first-order optimality condition using Clarke's subgradients, revealing a sparsity structure in time for the optimal control. Consequently, these optimal control problems represent a generalization of impulse control for evolution equations. To discretize the optimal control problem, we employ the space-time finite element method. Here, the state equation is approximated using piecewise linear and continuous finite elements in space, alongside a Petrov-Galerkin method utilizing piecewise constant trial functions and piecewise linear and continuous test functions in time. The control variable is discretized using the variational discretization concept. For error estimation, we initially derive a priori error estimates and stabilities for the finite element discretizations of the state and adjoint equations. Subsequently, we establish weak-* convergence for the control under the norm $\mathcal{M}(\bar I_c;L^2(\omega))$, with a convergence order of $O(h^\frac{1}{2}+\tau^\frac{1}{4})$ for the state.

Abstract:This paper studies the linear-quadratic (LQ) optimal control problem of a class of systems governed by the first-order hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) with final state constraints. The main contribution is to present the solvability condition and the corresponding explicit optimal controller by using the Lagrange multiplier method and the technique of solving forward and backward partial differential equations (FBPDEs). In particular, the result is reduced to the case with zero-valued final state constraints. Several numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the performance of the designed optimal controller.

Abstract:In this paper, a quadratic optimal control problem is considered for second-order parabolic PDEs with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions, in which the "point" control function (depending only on time) constitutes a source term. These problems involve choosing a control function (with or without "peak-value" constraints) to approximately steer the solution of the PDE in question to a desired function at the end of a prescribed (finite) time-interval. To compute approximations to the desired optimal control functions, semi-discrete, Galerkin approximations to the equation involved are introduced and the corresponding (approximating) control problems are tackled. It is shown that the sequences of solutions to both the constrained and unconstrained approximating (finite-dimensional) control problems converge, respectively, to the optimal solutions of the control problems involving the original initial/boundary value problem. The solution to the unconstrained approximating problem can be quite explicitly characterized, with the main numerical step for its computation requiring only the solution of a Lyapunov equation. Whereas approximate solutions to the constrained control problems can be obtained on the basis of Lagrangian duality and piecewise linear multipliers. These points are worked out in detail and illustrated by numerical examples involving the heat equation (HEq).
