Abstract:In this paper, we consider the system governed via the coefficients of a semilinear elliptic equation and give the necessary conditions for optimal control. Furthermore, we obtain the necessary conditions for an optimal domain in a domain optimization problem.

Abstract:An optimal control problem for a semilinear elliptic equation of divergence form is considered. Both the leading term and the semilinear term of the state equation contain the control. The well-known Pontryagin type maximum principle for the optimal controls is the first-order necessary condition. When such a first-order necessary condition is singular in some sense, certain type of the second-order necessary condition will come in naturally. The aim of this paper is to explore such kind of conditions for our optimal control problem.

Abstract:Optimal control problems with an L-0 term in the cost functional are considered. The L-0 term measures the size of the support of the control, and brings difficulty for studying the optimal control problems. By studying the existence and necessary conditions of optimal controls for a series of approximation problems and corresponding relaxed problems, the existence of optimal controls for a controlled elliptic system with an L-0-cost is obtained. Necessary conditions and the L-8-regularity of optimal controls are showed in the paper as well.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a numerical approximation for the boundary optimal control problem with the control constraint governed by a heat equation defined in a variable domain. For this variable domain problem, the boundary of the domain is moving and the shape of the boundary is defined by a known time-dependent function. By making use of the Galerkin finite element method, we first project the original optimal control problem into a semi-discrete optimal control problem governed by a system of ordinary differential equations. Then, based on the aforementioned semi-discrete problem, we apply the control parameterization method to obtain an optimal parameter selection problem governed by a lumped parameter system, which can be solved as a nonlinear optimization problem by a Sequential Quadratic Programming（SQP） algorithm. The numerical simulation is given to illustrate the effectiveness of our numerical approximation for the variable domain problem with the finite element method and the control parameterization method.

Abstract:Optimal control of infinite dimensional systems is one of the central problems in the control of distributed parameter systems. With the development of high performance computers, numerical methods for optimal control design have regained attention and achieved significant progress, mostly in the form of open-loop solutions. We consider in this work an optimal control problem for a bilinear parabolic partial differential equation (PDE) system. Based on the optimality conditions derived from Pontryagin's maximum principle for a reduced-order model, and stated as a two-boundary-value problem, we propose an iterative scheme for suboptimal closed-loop control design. In each iteration step, we take advantage of linear synthesis methods to construct a sequence of controllers. The convergence of the controller sequence is proved in appropriate functional spaces. When compared with previous iterative schemes, the proposed scheme avoids repeated numerical computation of the Riccati equation and therefore reduces significantly the number of ODEs that must be solved at each iteration step. A numerical simulation study shows the effectiveness of this new approach.

A relaxed problem is constructed by homogenization. By studying the G -closure problem, a local representation of admissible set of relaxed control is given. Finally, the maximum principle of relaxed problem is established via homogenization spike variation.

Abstract:This paper continues the investigations from [7] and is concerned with the derivation of first-order conditions for a control constrained optimization problem governed by a non-smooth elliptic PDE. The control enters the state equation not only linearly but also as the argument of a regularization of the Heaviside function. The non-linearity which acts on the state is locally Lipschitz-continuous and not necessarily differentiable, i.e., non-smooth. This excludes the application of standard adjoint calculus. We derive conditions under which a strong stationary optimality system can be established, i.e., a system that is equivalent to the purely primal optimality condition saying that the directional derivative of the reduced objective in feasible directions is nonnegative. For this, two assumptions are made on the unknown optimizer. These are fulfilled if the non-smoothness is locally convex around its non-differentiable points and if an estimate involving only the given data is true. Some of the presented findings are employed in the recent contribution [8], where limit optimality systems for non-smooth shape optimization problems [7] are established.

Abstract:. In this paper, an optimal control problem governed by a class of p-Laplacian elliptic equations is studied. In particular, as no monotonicity assumption is assumed on the nonlinear term, the state equation is non wellposed, which may admit several solutions for one control. To obtain optimality conditions for an optimal pair, the multiplicity and singularity/degeneracy of the state equation need to be handled respectively. For this reason, penalization problems and approximation problems are introduced. Finally the main result is proved by a series of process of taking to the limits.

Abstract:The paper puts forward sufficient conditions for local controllability of a control dynamical system. The results obtained are meaningful in the case when the linear approximation to this system is not completely controllable. As a corollary, we obtain necessary second-order optimality conditions for a general optimal control problem.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider an optimal control problem for an elliptic obstacle problem. Using a family of semi-linear elliptic partial differential equations to approximate the obstacle problem, we obtain an approximate optimal problem for partial differential equations. Then, we propose a new method to prove the objective functional in the approximate optimal problem is Gâteaux-differentiable and compute its gradient. The gradient descent algorithm and Gauss Newton algorithm are presented to find the numerical solution. Numerical results show the efficiency and stability of the algorithms.

Abstract:We study optimal control problems that are governed by semilinear elliptic partial differential equations that involve non-Lipschitzian nonlinearities. It is shown that, for a certain class of such PDEs, the solution map is Fréchet differentiable even though the differential operator contains a nondifferentiable term. We exploit this effect to establish first-order necessary optimality conditions for minimizers of the considered control problems. The resulting KKT-conditions take the form of coupled PDE-systems that are posed in non-Muckenhoupt weighted Sobolev spaces and raise interesting questions regarding the regularity of optimal controls, the derivation of second-order optimality conditions, and the analysis of finite element discretizations.

Abstract:This paper deals with second-order optimality conditions for a quasilinear elliptic control problem with a nonlinear coefficient in the principal part that is finitely PC 2 (continuous and C 2 apart from finitely many points). We prove that the control-to-state operator is continuously differentiable even though the nonlinear coefficient is non-smooth. This enables us to establish “no-gap” second-order necessary and sufficient optimality conditions in terms of an abstract curvature functional, i.e. , for which the sufficient condition only differs from the necessary one in the fact that the inequality is strict. A condition that is equivalent to the second-order sufficient optimality condition and could be useful for error estimates in, e.g. , finite element discretizations is also provided.

Abstract:This work is devoted to stationary optimal control problems with polygonal constraints on the components of the state. Existence of Lagrange multipliers, of different regularities, is verified for the cases with and without Slater condition holding. For the numerical realization a semismooth Newton method is proposed for an appropriately chosen family of regularized problems. The asymptotic behavior of the regularized problem class is studied, and numerical feasibility of the method is shown.

Abstract:This paper investigates stability properties of affine optimal control problems constrained by semilinear elliptic partial differential equations. This is done by studying the so called metric subregularity of the set-valued mapping associated with the system of first order necessary optimality conditions. Preliminary results concerning the differentiability of the functions involved are established, especially the so-called switching function. Using this ansatz, more general nonlinear perturbations are encompassed, and under weaker assumptions, than the ones previously considered in the literature on control constrained elliptic problems. Finally, the applicability of the results is illustrated with some error estimates for the Tikhonov regularization.

Abstract:The purpose of this work is to study an optimal control problem for a semilinear elliptic partial differential equation with a linear combination of Dirac measures as a forcing term; the control variable corresponds to the amplitude of such singular sources. We analyze the existence of optimal solutions and derive first and, necessary and sufficient, second order optimality conditions. We develop a solution technique that discretizes the state and adjoint equations with continuous piecewise linear finite elements; the control variable is already discrete. We analyze the convergence properties of discretizations and obtain, in two dimensions, an a priori error estimate for the underlying approximation of an optimal control variable.

Abstract:This paper concerns second-order sufficient conditions of optimality for a class of infinite dimensional optimal control problems under control constraints and end-point constraints. The distinctive feature of our formulation is the use of variational analysis techniques. Our approach is based on a suitable decomposition of controls, using second-order tangents, and it is developed in the case of functional constraints. An adaptation of the tools in the case of pointwise constraints on the controls is proposed too. We provide applications to concrete optimal control problems involving PDEs.
