Abstract:This study aims to calculate the performance of the novel design of wet cooling tower (NDWCT) using first law (energy) and second law (exergy) of thermodynamics. Moreover, it determines the economic feasibility (cost savings and payback period) and sustainability of the NDWCT using the life-cycle cost (LCC) and environmental assessment method. An appropriate mathematical model is developed and simulated in Engineering Equation Solver to calculate water savings, performance and payback period of additional investment. The simulation results have a good agreement with the experimental outcomes (error 2.6%). Simulation results revealed that the NDWCT consumes 34.48% less water than the conventional wet cooling tower (WCT). The installation of heat exchanger improves the performance of WCT by 6% because the consumption of water to air ratio increases. Moreover, the exergy destruction in the NDWCT is 1.23 MW lower than the conventional WCT. Additionally, the heat exchanger costs k$30.7 to save an annual fuel cost of k$72 which could be recovered within a payback period of 0.37 years. Lastly, the environmental assessment proves that the NDWCT relinquishes the particulate matter emission by 0.042 g/s.

Abstract:Heat exchange takes place between two fluids (such as water and air or water and steam) in a cooling tower. A cooling tower (CT) is a critical element of the condenser unit. It plays a major role in enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of the condenser. The CT has a variety of application and is widely used in petroleum refineries, chemical plants, steam power plants, nuclear power plants, processing plants, textile industries, etc. The impact of environment on the performance of CT plays a major role as it varies with temperature and humidity of the ambient condition. In the present work, a counter-flow wet cooling tower (CFWCT) operation under humid circumstances has been compared both experimentally and numerically. The performance analysis of the CT is carried out for such parameters as evaporation loss and energy loss from water to air. The temperature ratio (TR) and the effectiveness (ε) of CT are analyzed with the variation of the water flow rate ( m ω ), air flow rate ( m a ), water temperature ( T ω ), and air temperature ( T a ). The cooling tower temperature profile is determined by numerical analysis through ANSYS Fluent along the fluid flow path. The numerical analysis of CFWCT is validated with the experimental results. The present work will contribute to the literature of the design and performance analysis of cooling tower.

Abstract:This work aims to give new results about the effect of the outlet opening of heat exchanger on its cooling quality. Three outlet opining locations have been studied in order to determine the best location that maximizes the efficiency of the heat transfer. The flow velocity at the inlet of the heat exchanger was also studied. It is worth noting that the research was carried out in a numerical way using ANSYS-CFX simulator.The latter solves both of energy and momentum equations using finite-volume method. Three pertinent parameters are considered here: the velocity of the flow at the inlet port of heat exchangers was controlled in terms of Reynolds number in the range 5 to 40. The pattern and the intensity of thermal transfer, the latter being controlled by the Richardson number selected between the values 0 and 1. The simulation was done for a simple and incompressible fluid. The results of this research showed that there is a possibility to raise the efficiency the heat exchanger if the outlet hole is placed at the bottom of the right side.

Abstract:Thermal performance of closed wet cooling tower has been investigated experimentally and theoreticallyin this work. The theoretical model based on heat and mass transfer equations and heat and mass transfer balance equations which are established for steady state case. A new small indirect cooling tower was used for conducting experiments. The cooling capacity of cooling tower is 1 kW for an inlet water temperature of 38oC, a water mass velocity 2.3 kg/m2.s and an air wet bulb temperature of 26oC. This study investigates the relationship between saturation efficiency, cooling capacity and coefficient of performance of closed wet cooling tower versus different operating parameters such wet-bulb temperature, variable air-spray water flow ratio and cooling water inlet temperature. Results indicate that the capacity and saturation efficiency was found close to the related experimental results. Good agreement was obtained between the theoretical results and experimental measurements for the performance of small cooling tower.

Abstract:The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of electronic anti-fouling (EAF) technology on fouling mitigation in a heat exchanger in an open cooling-tower system. Two tests were performed in a rectangular heat-transfer channel at 5 cycles of concentration: one without the EAF treatment and the other with the EAF treatment. The fouling resistance in the case with the EAF treatment was about 70% less than that in the case without the EAF treatment at the end of 270-hr tests.

The main aim of the present research is to investigate the thermal performance of the indirect contact closed circuit cooling tower, ICCCCT used with chilled ceiling, to gain a deeper knowledge in this important field of engineering which has been traditionally used in various industrial & HVAC systems. To achieve this study, experimental work were implemented for the ICCCCT use with chilled ceiling. In this study the thermal performances of closed wet cooling tower use with chilled ceiling is experimentally and theoretically investigated. Different experimental tests were conducted by varying the controlling parameters to investigate their effects on the ICCCCT characteristics such as tower cooling capacity, chilled ceiling cooling capacity, tower saturation efficiency, mass transfer coefficient and heat transfer coefficient. The following controlling parameters are varied during experiments: spray water flow rate (90 to 150 kg/hr), ambient air wet bulb temperature (12 to 18 oC), and also changing chilled ceiling flow rate (2 to 6 l/min).

Abstract:This paper presents the result of a study of the effect of cooling tower system in terms of performance and cost of maintenance. The study was conducted in a two-storey shopping complex building. Observation on site was held to obtain data on full load amp (FLA) and chilled water temperature (CWT) before and after servicing cooling tower unit. Energy of cooling tower were evaluated by analysis of FLA and CWT in percentage value. The condition on the system and component were also observed to differentiate the condition before and after treatment. The result obtained showed that cooling system performance after the treatment was increased.

Abstract:Cooling tower is an indispensable part, used as a direct contact type heat exchanger mainly for evaporative cooling. Cooling tower generally dissipates, remove heat from thermal power plants. In an induced draft cooling tower of counter flow, used for a mini-steam power plant, hot water enters at the top, while the air is introduced at the bottom and exits at the top, air is allowed to come in contact with falling water droplets, causing evaporative cooling. A possibility of desired change with different spray angle, patterns, is tried and analysed. On findings, best suited spray nozzle angle resulted is 90°, and amongst three spray patterns, full cone, hollow cone and spiral type nozzle; full cone nozzle of 90° spray angle helps achieving efficiency up to 82%. The range increases successively from 9.8°C to 15.5°C for FC nozzle, in approach to WBT; the desirable fall of 3.56°C is attained with effectiveness of 81.63%.

Abstract:The dew point indirect evaporative cooling achieved through Maisotsenko cycle is a complicated thermodynamic process. For further understanding of the heat and mass transfer occurred in a dew point indirect evaporative air cooler with Maisotsenko-cycle counter-flow configuration, the paper presents a novel mathematical model that combined the law of energy conservation and the principle of the thermodynamic theory. The model was used to carry out the parametric study of the dew point air cooler under various inlet air temperature and relative humidity. Through the combined analysis of energy and exergy of the target indirect evaporative cooling system, it is found that both the inlet air temperature and relative humidity have an important effect on the thermal performance and thermodynamic performance of the heat and mass exchanger. The high temperature environment helps to get better thermal performance and thermodynamic performance. It has been showed in this paper that the best thermal performance does not correspond to the best thermodynamic performance. Thus, the energy and exergy analysis should be implemented simultaneously for the optimization of the process to get the best thermal performance at permissible level of thermodynamic cost. Abstract:Abstract Closed wet cooling tower (CWCT) is an indirect-contact evaporative cooler, in which ambient air, spray water, and process water function together. In order to improve its thermal performance, a new heat transfer strategy is proposed. The influence of fan frequency, spray density, and processing water flow on the thermal performance of CWCT is obtained by combining theoretical and experimental research. By fitting the experimental data, the empirical formula of heat and mass transfer coefficient is obtained. The research results can be used to improve the cooling efficiency and enhance the heat and mass transfer of CWCT.

Abstract:The thermal performance of fin-and-tube heat exchangers (HX) is a crucial aspect in a multitude of applications and fields; several design and operational parameters influence this performance. This study focuses on the issue of flow maldistribution and its effect on the HX thermal performance. For this purpose, an experimental setup is designed and implemented to emulate the conditions under which an automotive heat exchanger operates in regard to the non-uniform upstream airflow velocity distribution over the HX surface. The setup allows obtaining various configurations of airflow velocity non-uniformity of some desired mean velocity and standard deviation. The experimental results reveal that a higher degree of non-uniformity (higher standard deviation of the velocity distribution) causes an increased deterioration of the HX thermal performance. For example, at a water flowrate of 200 L/hr and a mean airflow velocity of 2 m/s, increasing the standard deviation from 0 to 2 m/s (i.e., moving from the lowest to highest degrees of non-uniformity) causes a total deterioration of 27% in the performance (3.78 to 2.75 kW, respectively), which can also be observed in the increased level of outlet water temperature (53.8 to 58.2 °C, respectively). The obtained results confirm the numerical results reported in the literature.

Abstract:Based on the heat and mass transfer theory and characteristics of the FLUENT software, a three-dimensional numerical simulation platform composed by user defined functions had been developed to simulate the thermal performance in a natural draft wet cooling tower. This platform was used to study a typical hyperbolic natural draft wet cooling tower with different fill types. The variations of the flow and temperature field in the cooling tower caused by the two different methods of fill were investigated. It is found that the outlet water temperature will decrease due to the non-uniform fill depth. The non-uniform fill depth is beneficial to increasing the efficiency of the cooling tower.

Abstract:The effects of different cooling delta angles on power plant natural draught dry cooling towers are investigated by means of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) calculations. The heat exchangers are arranged horizontally in the inlet cross-section of the tower in the form of A-frames, which is also called cooling delta. A cooling delta consists of two cooling columns (heat exchanger tube banks), the angle between which is called cooling delta angle. This angle causes a non-uniform flow and temperature distribution within the heat exchangers, and thereby influences the thermal performance of the cooling tower. Since it is unpractical to model individual fins and tubes of a heat exchanger, the performance of the finned tube heat exchangers in the tower are modeled using a porous media approach, which is accurate enough instead of pore-scale simulations as long as the macroscopic properties are determined correctly. After a careful validation of the porous media approach, the 2D turbulent flow and pressure losses behind a cooling delta with different angles as well as the 3D natural convection heat transfer in natural draft dry cooling towers are studied. The results agree with the engineering reality and can be used to further find an optimal cooling delta angle for different projects.

Abstract:Circulating cooling water system is widely used in industry. Traditionally, circulating cooling water system is in a parallel structure. Without reuse of cooling water, the return temperature of water is low and total flow rate of water is high. This leads to the low efficiency of cooling tower and high energy consumption of system. When the coolers are in series arrangement and water is reused, the return temperature of cooling water will increase. High return temperature of cooling water can lead to the severe fouling of coolers. The level of fouling depends on outlet temperature and velocity of water. In this paper, we proposed model where cooling water is reused and the fouling of cooler is avoided. The numerical relationship between stream velocity and return temperature is introduced. The objective is to formulate the framework with minimum flow rate and no fouling with coolers. A case study is used to show the effectiveness of the proposed model.

Abstract:The heat exchanger (HE) is a device that is used to complete the process of heat transfer between different matters without direct mixing. Therefore, it is of great importance in the transfer of energy and the completion of various energy transition processes. In the processes of HE between different energy systems, many factors influence and play a major and important role in the efficiency of transformation and exchange in forms of energy, such as the length, the material type, the exchange fluid, the surrounding environment, and many other factors. In this work, the effect of the HE length of the parallel and counter flow HEs was investigated based on the use of computer simulation programs. There was a significant impact of the exchange factors, especially the length of the HEs in both the parallel and counter-flow HEs, on the quality and efficiency of the HE and the temperature distribution. The overall evaluation shows that by increasing the length of the HE for both parallel and counter-flow HEs, the heat transfer is increased and the heat distribution becomes more homogeneous, which aids in enhancing the transfer of energy efficiency inside the HEs. Abstract:Experimental tests were conducted to investigate the thermal performance (cooling effect) of water mist system consisting of 5μm volume median diameter droplets in reducing the heat gain entering a room through the roof and the west wall by reducing the outside surface temperature due to the evaporative cooling effect during the hot dry summer of Baghdad/Iraq. The test period was Fifty one days during the months May, June, and July 2012. The single test day consists of 16 test hours starting from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. The results showed a reduction range of 1.71 to 15.5°C of the roof outside surface temperature and 21.3 to 76.6% reduction in the daily heat flux entering the room through the roof compared with the case of not using water mist system. Also the results show a reduction range of 1.3 to 18.8°C in the wall outside surface temperature. Finally numerical simulation with ANSYS-FLUENT.14 was conducted to compare its results with the experimental results of the roof and wall tests.

Abstract:The energy consumption increase in the last few years has contributed to developing energy efficiency policies in many countries, the main goal of which is decreasing CO 2 emissions. One of the reasons for this increment has been caused by the use of air conditioning systems due to new comfort standards. In that regard, cooling towers and evaporative condensers are presented as efficient devices that operate with low-level water temperature. Moreover, the energy consumption and the cost of the equipment are lower than other systems like air condensers at the same operation conditions. This work models an air conditioning system in TRNSYS software, the main elements if which are a cooling tower, a water-water chiller and a reference building. The cooling tower model is validated using experimental data in a pilot plant. The main objective is to implement an optimizing control strategy in order to reduce both energy and water consumption. Furthermore a comparison between three typical methods of capacity control is carried out. Additionally, different cooling tower configurations are assessed, involving six drift eliminators and two water distribution systems. Results show the influence of optimizing the control strategy and cooling tower configuration, with a maximum energy savings of 10.8% per story and a reduction of 4.8% in water consumption.

Abstract:The output power and efficiency of gas turbines are reduced significantly during the hot weather, particularly in areas where the daytime temperature reaches as high as 50 °C. Gas turbine inlet fogging and overspray has been considered a efficient and cost-effective method to augment the power output. Therefore, the evaporation effect and the flow resistance performance in the inlet duct after the inlet fogging applied are the objectives of this paper. The nozzles array mounted on channels and beams, and they have effects on the pressure drop. Installation site of the fogging nozzles which is relative to the silencers also have impact on the effectiveness of evaporation and cooling. For research the evaporative cooling effect in the duct, the whole inlet duct is meshed in this research to compute the pressure drop through the nozzles frames under fogging and none-fogging conditions with CFD method. The results indicate that injection velocity and arrangement of nozzles have significant effects on the pressure drops and cooling effect, which will affect compressor performance. Gas turbine is sensitive not only to the inlet temperature, but also to the inlet pressure drop. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the pressure drop and evaporation of inlet fogging and will be of values to gas turbine inlet fogging system designers and users.

It is observed here that the cause ofthe adverse effect of the crosswind on the cooling towers can be attributed to thearound flow effect which destroys the radial inflow into the cooling towers when thewind is absent. Hence, a significant deterioration in the heat transfer from the heatexchangers at lateral sides occurs.
