Abstract:Williams elaborates the concept of structures of feeling in different ways at important points in his writings. This gives it a particular methodological significance in relating the extraordinariness of imaginative literature to the ordinariness of cultural process. It is employed particularly to show the significance of literature for the articulation of alternatives to dominant world views, and thus to the politics of social change. Williams's different formulations of the concept are discussed in terms of their ways of relating reflexive experience to institutional structures and in relation to the genetic structuralism of Goldmann and Bourdieu's concepts of habitus and cultural field. Three types of criticisms are considered, which have in common the contention that the concept is unclear. Operationalized in analysing literature and its symbols, it can contribute towards clarification of the complexity of the processes of reflexive communication of experience which are at the root of social order and change.

Abstract:European Journal of Cultural Studies, Ahead of Print. This article unearths Raymond Williams' approach to communication as transport and social networks. Existing literature argues that the field of communication's withdrawal from the study of transport leads to at least two setbacks: media presentism and a narrowed meaning of communication and culture. This article excavates Williams' concept of 'communication as transport and social networks' by first revisiting his larger method of cultural materialism that sees communication as a whole complex assemblage of different modes of communication to facilitate connection. This is then followed by a discussion on the use of this concept in his various works and, more intensively, in The Country and the City. To emphasize Williams' relevance to contemporary contexts, the next part of the article deals with an analysis of how digital media and contemporary transport networks facilitate the reproduction of Bali as a paradise. This article calls for a more dialectical understanding of communication that includes the inextricable relations between mobility and sociality, the material and the symbolic, and the transmission and the ritual in shaping human lives.

Abstract:According to conventional institutional history, the three founding spiritual parents of the intellectual movement known as “cultural studies” are E. P. Thompson, whose revival of historiography “from below” changed the face of history-writing for several generations; Richard Hoggart, who insisted on the continuing salience of a popular, working-class culture in the wake of the pervasive influence of the media, and who founded the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies (CCCS) to document this culture and directed it for its first five years; and Raymond Williams, who, despite his lack of institutional connections to the CCCS and its progeny in some twelve British colleges and universities, was perhaps the most important influence on the movement.1

Abstract:Raymond Williams, the eminent British Marxist literary theorist, was introduced to China in the late 1980s, and his theories have since been increasingly attractive to China’s literary and cultural studies. He not only touched upon some of the fundamental issues of Marxist literary theory, such as ideology, culture, hegemony and aesthetics, but also developed it with his dynamic construction of a sort of cultural materialism, thus bridging between Marxist socio-historical and aesthetic criticism and cultural and linguistic factors. While literary and cultural theory is in decline in the West, Williams’s legacy is still appreciated in international circles, which ought to be cherished and inherited by us Chinese scholars in our studies of world literature and culture.

Abstract:This article is part of a project that proposes and explores an articulation of community, culture, and freedom as the foundation of a cultural studies practice built on the principled intellectual analyses of Raymond Williams and Edward P. Thompson and capable of renewing and developing their democratic project. By focusing on community, culture, and freedom as concepts and practices, this article explores their theoretical status and their political potential today. By constructing a position founded on their articulation, a contemporary mode of intellectual analysis is proposed that can offer alternative views of the world we live in and open independent configurations of the human, the social, and the cultural. In the light of this articulation, the article takes account of recent challenges to cultural studies, reexamines Williams’s common culture project, and reassesses it as a basis for a democratic view and project of common humanity in the light of Zygmunt Bauman’s recent work.

Abstract:Raymond Williams had an enduring interest in science fiction, an interest attested to: first, by two articles specifically addressed to the genre, both of which were eventually published in the journal Science Fiction Studies; second, by a wide range of reference in more familiar texts, such as Culture and Society, The Long Revolution, George Orwell and The Country and the City; and third, by his two ‘future novels’, The Volunteers and The Fight for Manod, the first clearly science-fictional in character, the latter less so. This article will summarise this work, and will also explore how some of Williams’s more general key theoretical concepts – especially structure of feeling and selective tradition – can be applied to the genre. Finally, it will argue that the ‘sociological’ turn, by which Williams sought to substitute description and explanation for judgement and canonisation as the central purposes of analysis, represents a more productive approach to science fiction studies than the kind of prescriptive criticism deployed by other avowedly ‘neo-Marxist’ works, such as Darko Suvin’s Metamorphoses of Science Fiction and Fredric Jameson’s Archaeologies of the Future.

Abstract:Retomo a relevância da primeira geração dos Estudos Culturais Britânicos mediante o exame da contribuição específica de Raymond Williams no diálogo com a contemporânea “virada afetiva” nas ciências sociais. Para tal, busco explorar seu conceito de “estrutura de sentimentos” que remonta à possibilidade do estudioso enxergar os modos como pessoas e grupos, num dado contexto histórico, articulam suas experiências em resposta a uma situação anterior. O movimento de articulação configura ele mesmo a cultura, para o “novo materialismo” de Williams, atento às formas de emergência e, por conseguinte à transformação social. Revisito as noções de Stimmung e de mood para me aproximar da descrição de “afetos comuns” que entrelaçam corpos e matérias e são capazes de contagiar um tempo. Pretendo, ao fim, demonstrar a atualidade do crítico galês que se moveu dentro da “nova esquerda” britânica atuando também na renovação do marxismo, ao substituir a “estrutura” de Louis Althusser por uma intrincada rede de relações complexas que se traduzem nas dinâmicas reais da vida em que afetar uns aos outros é um “inesperado potencial para o sentido” (GUMBRECHT, 2014). Deixo aos leitores a chance de julgar tais potências como avanços ou recuos numa ordem social desejável, apenas que busco assegurar que as mudanças começam em aspectos os mais sutis da vida social.

Abstract:Initiated in 1950 - 70s, "Keywords criticism", with core terms as its research center, teases from diachronic and synchronic levels and reveals behind the words the orientation of political thoughts and traces of humanity, which bears originality in research perspective and wideness in theoretical horizon. Keywords: Vocabulary of Culture and Society (1976) by Raymond Williams is a sign of the rise of "keywords criticism". Raymond Williams views words as "condescension of social practice" and "container of political strategies", and attaches importance to digging into the cultural and political connotations in the practical application of language and variations of meanings. This paper, from different levels such as theoretical sources, realistic foundation and political standpoint, conducts a study of the initiation of "keywords criticism", and then probes into Raymond Williams' significant contribution to the formation of theoretical peculiarity and textual styles of "keywords criticism".

Na apresentação da vida e obra desse importante intelectual do pensamento crítico do século XX, insisto na articulação realizada por Raymond Williams entre certa tradição marxista continental historicista e a tradição romântica de crítica à modernidade industrial. Essa é, sem dúvida, a forma mais segura de demonstrar a atualidade do pensamento do crítico galês - algo realmente significativo, num momento em que uma crítica radical ao capitalismo e os temas da ecologia política se reafirmam mais uma vez na arena pública, cuja relevância e urgência são óbvias. Abstract:By exploring housing transitions and their impact on the leisure practices of 12, white, British economically 'middling' men aged between 20 and 26 whilst utilising the work of British cultural theorist Raymond Williams, this article articulates a cultural studies critique of social generational approaches. Firstly, it shows how this approach to young lives can remedy the 'base' determining 'superstructure' logic underpinning social generational approaches. Secondly, drawing on Williams' concepts can foreground culture as constitutive of contemporary transitional pathways. Finally, this approach can continue the impetus of 'blending' of cultural and transitional approaches found within social generational approaches. Doing so will show how a cultural studies approach can help supplement insights into continuity and change within contemporary young lives whilst still enabling a critical focus on class, gender and race. Taken together, this article looks to enable a productive engagement with social generational approaches to critically interrogate the experiences of young people in ever-changing social, cultural, economic and political contexts.

Reading Rancière: Literature at the Limit of World Literature

Abstract:This essay critically interrogates Jacques Rancière’s claim that the modern idea of literature found its own being when it became conscious of the “democratic petrification” of literariness in the early decades of the nineteenth century. I make two related points vis-à-vis Rancière’s argument: first, I demonstrate that he insufficiently imagines the knowledge paradigms informing this allegedly democratic petrification of literature and ignores vital shifts in history; and second, I argue that because of this initial poverty of imagination, Rancière fails to address the most crucial impediment to the regime’s reliance on reading as a “universal” strategy—i.e., colonial history and racial difference. While the metropolitan culture yields its innermost secrets to the hermeneutic eye of everyday literariness, the colonial other, shrouded in racial alterity, remains mysterious, illegible, and even invisible. Instead, I show through close readings of Honoré de Balzac’s novel La Peau de chagrin (1831), which also functions as the central text for Rancière’s theory, that the conditions of reading everyday life, and hence the new literariness, could emerge only under the strict orders laid down through these new disciplines like Orientalism and, behind them, by the coercive structures of colonial governance. My wager is that the new condition of readability was distributed beyond any one culture or one nation. Hence, the proper context for the emergence of the new idea of literature could only be described as early discussions and reflections on that typically supranational concept of the nineteenth century—i.e., world literature.

Abstract:This essay approaches the cultures of reading anthropologically, drawing on my ethnographic research with the Henry Williamson Society to excavate the ways readers enthusiastically commit to the minor characters of Williamson's novels. It places Alex Woloch's literary analysis of minor characterization in dialogue with the anthropological theory of “distributed agency” developed by Alfred Gell in order to examine the idea of the reader as someone who “gives” and may in turn “receive” attention. The essay asks whether it might be more helpful to conceive of readers’ activities as a form of reading without “culture”—whether plurality, if it must be invoked, might better be located in the dynamism of the reading person.

Abstract:Although much has been written about academic discourse from diverse theoretical perspectives over the past two decades, and especially about English academic discourse, research on socialization into academic discourse or literacies in one's first or subsequently learned languages or into new discourse communities has received far less attention. Academic discourse socialization is a dynamic, socially situated process that in contemporary contexts is often multimodal, multilingual, and highly intertextual as well. The process is characterized by variable amounts of modeling, feedback, and uptake; different levels of investment and agency on the part of learners; by the negotiation of power and identities; and, often, important personal transformations for at least some participants. However, the consequences and outcomes of academic discourse socialization are also quite unpredictable, both in the shorter term and longer term. In this review I provide a brief historical overview of research on language socialization into academic communities and describe, in turn, developments in research on socialization into oral, written, and online discourse and the social practices associated with each mode. I highlight issues of conformity or reproduction to local norms and practices versus resistance and contestation of these. Next, studies of socialization into academic publication and into particular textual identities are reviewed. I conclude with a short discussion of race, culture, gender, and academic discourse socialization, pointing out how social positioning by oneself and others can affect participants’ engagement and performance in their various learning communities.

Abstract:<p>The paper links critique of 'inner process' to a perspective that treats language as activity that is accomplished by living beings. The view traces reading to human ways of coordinating with 'the seen'. Having contrasted this distributed view with organism-first alternatives, I use a case study of reports to sketch how readers engage with written materials to both select details and project an imagined 'source' (e.g. a meaning, author or intention). Far from using inner process ('decoding') readers coordinate with a field of patternings. Where skilled, they use recollecting to link looking, silent thinking, expectations and strategic moves. Using judgements, they transform what they observe by setting off experience. I thus build on Wittgenstein's critique of inner process while also endorsing Trybulec's (2019) radicalization of his view. To avoid treating the sense of 'written words' as subjective, the material aspect of patternings is taken to index outward criteria (roughly, standards of judgement). In seeking to replace theories that presuppose 'text', I stress how patternings invite directed sensorimotor activity by an intelligent person. Indeed, since persons learn to see wordings (or take a language stance) arrangements of patternings act as marks, 'symbols' and aggregations that set off recollection, judgements and iterated action. Skilled readers can use re-reading, the already read etc. to modulate ways of attending. Readers link the said, hints, recollections and ways of actualizing movements to grant reading experience a specific sense. By considering how outer criteria are evoked, reading is traced back to skilled linguistic action.</p>

‘Route Work’ through Alternative Archives: Reflections on Cross-Disciplinary Practice

Abstract:The Five Hundred Year Initiative stresses the value of cross-disciplinary perspectives in investigating the antecedents of contemporary southern African societies, with archaeological sources playing a prominent role in its associated projects. To produce effective histories, these projects require analytical attention to both the processes that gave rise to contemporary societies and those that shape history making in the present. In this article, I build on Paul Gilroy's notion of ‘route work’ (by comparison to ‘root work’) to explore the value and methodological challenges of constructing historical understandings that simultaneously attend to the dynamics of past cultural practice and the processes through which our understandings of those practices are produced. Drawing on examples from Ghana, I argue that a methodological engagement with the negotiated quality of historical understanding – an approach that brings into view our processes of ‘coming to know’ – lays the groundwork for an ethically engaged and responsive, at the same time as empirically grounded, understanding of past socio-historical processes.

'A way of struggle': reformations and affirmations of E. P. Thompson's class analysis in the light of postmodern theories of language

Abstract:This paper is an analysis of the role of language in historical class formation in light of the recent developments in postmodern social theory and historiography. Revisionists from within this perspective have questioned if not abandoned E. P. Thompson's class struggle analysis, arguing that he fails to account for the constitutive character of language in the construction of collective identities. They oppose his account of the making of the English working class with alternative histories emphasizing populist and other non-class identities. Drawing on the Bakhtin Circle of literary studies, and returning to Thompson's own writings, I argue that we can incorporate language into class struggle analysis as a critical mediating force. I maintain that class struggle occurs largely within a hegemonic discursive formation, and that class consciousness and identity thus in part are formed through counter-hegemonic strategies of resistance to ideological domination. To illustrate this theory I analyse the role of language in the class struggles of the silk weavers of the Spitalfields district in London in the 1820s. I analyse how the silk weavers articulated a class consciousness through their counter-hegemonic struggles with the large capitalists and the language of political economy.
