Abstract:ABSTRACT There are three types of liquid crystals (LCs) in the world: rodics, discotics and bowlics, corresponding to one-, two- and three-dimensional molecules, respectively. The rodics were discovered by the Austrian, F. Reinitzer, in 1888 and is the material behind the LC display industry of $100 billion annually. The discotics were discovered by S. Chandrasekhar’s team in India, in 1977. The third type, bowlics, was proposed by a Chinese, LIN Lei (Lui LAM), in 1982 while working at the Institute of Physics, CAS, Beijing. Distinguished from the rodic and the discotic, a bowlic molecule breaks the up–down symmetry, and bowlic LCs are one of excellent candidates for switchable ferroelectrics with great potential applications in ultrahigh-density memory devices. The importance of strategic bowlic materials has recently attracted increasing attention of scientists from multiple disciplines and engineers from different backgrounds. In this review, the history of bowlics and their recent advances in molecular design, synthesis and applications are discussed.

Abstract:Blue phase liquid crystals (BPLCs) self-assembling into soft cubic crystalline structures possess significant applications in the field of dynamic photoelectron spectroscopy. However, three scientific challenges limit their broader application, namely, the difficulty to form a free-standing structure due to fluidity, dependence on nanoparticles or polymer matrix to widen the BP temperature range, and high working voltages to reorientate the LCMs. Herein, we proposed a new concept of free-standing BPLC microcapsules (BPLCMs) prepared by microfluidic emulsification and interfacial polymerization. The temperature range of BPLCs could be widened by surface anchoring and physical confinement. The BPLCMs built a color library in the visible region in the thermal response process. Most importantly, the stable BPLCMs exhibited a reversible surface-switch mode driven by an electric field lower than 0.55 V mu m(-1), which was the lowest record for BPLCs. The BPLCMs demonstrate intriguing prospects in the fields of smart display and reversible sensors.

Abstract:This volume represents a collection of selected papers presented at a symposium of the same name sponsored by the Division of Colloid and Surface Chemistry held at the national Spring meeting of the American Chemical Society in Las Vegas, Nevada, March 29 - April 1, 1982. Also included are invited papers from a number of outstanding overseas liquid crystal scientists who were unable to attend the symposium. The attendance at the symposium itself and the number of papers contained herein is reflective of the high level of current interest in (and maturity of) the field of liquid crystal research. Included in this volume are papers mainly derived from the fields of chemistry and physics ranging in content from the design and synthesis of new meso genic materials to theoretical physical treatments of anisotropic liquids. One of the significant aspects of current liquid crystal research is the increasing col laboration between chemist and phys.icist. The overlap of these two areas has been growing over the last several years and many contri butions to this volume involve a molecular approach to the chemical physics of liquid crystalline materials.

Abstract:Liquid crystal phase boundaries play an important role in self-assembly processes defining nanostructured complex fluid systems. Surface boundary conditions, director-dependent surface tension and topological defects produce elastic forces that combine to define the architecture of multiphasic anisotropic fluids. Developing a detailed understanding of these forces is necessary for a first principals understanding of anisotropic biological structures and producing the next generation of mesoscopic materials. We will discuss our recent experimental progress on thermotropic LC and colloidal LC consisting of cellulose nanocrystals and graphite.

Abstract:Recently,progressively more fundamental and applied studies in liquid crystals have sought to apply this miraculous soft material to aspects other than the optics of planar displays.These up-and-coming non-display studies of liquid crystals range across the disciplines,from biology through to chemistry and physics,extending beyond even materiology and engineering.This summary primarily introduces the foundations,developments and potentials of several studies in non-display applications of liquid crystals in physics and related areas,including the progress on liquid crystal modulators in microwave and THz frequencies,developed recently by the Exeter research team.The aim is to provide a useful reference for scientists studying non-display aspects of liquid crystals.

Abstract:Liquid crystals are the prototype of the so-called soft condensed matter. In simple terms they are "structured liquids" that historically have received a lot of interest because they help to generate new concepts and knowledge in Physics, and possess important electro--optical applications, e. g., in displays of mobile computers and telephones. More recently, it has been discovered that liquid crystals could be applied in fabrication of metamaterials and in biomedicine where they are potentially useful for tissue identification, controlled drug delivery and detection of bacteria and viruses. However, in Mexico, liquid crystals courses are included only in a few undergraduate programs on Physics being elective in most of the cases. Therefore, literature for teaching about liquid crystals in Spanish is scarce. In this paper we will discuss about elementary Physics of liquid crystals and the mathematical tools that permit to analyze them. We will explain, mainly, how to analytically characterize the symmetry and order of static uniaxial nematic liquid crystals, the most simple of all liquid crystal phases. We will conduct this explanation in basic terms, suitable for science and engineering students at intermediate undergraduate level, with knowledge about linear algebra and vector calculus, willing to approach for the first time to this subject. Our goal is to support the Latin American scientific community in preparing human resources in this field. The article is written in Spanish to contribute to the establishment and communication of concepts that only exist in other languages in the specialized literature.

Abstract:Liquid crystal (LC) droplets are highly attractive for applications in privacy windows, optical switches, optical vortices, optical microresonators, microlenses, and biosensors due to their ease of fabrication and easy alignment at surfaces. This review presents the latest advancements in LC droplets, which have nematic, chiral nematic, and twist–bend nematic and ferroelectric nematic phases, or blue phases. Finally, it discusses the challenges and opportunities for applications based on LC droplets. The main challenges encompass the precise control of internal structures and defects to meet diverse application requirements, enhancing stability and durability across various environments, reducing large-scale production costs to improve commercial feasibility, increasing response speeds to external stimuli to adapt to rapidly changing scenarios, and developing tunable LC droplets to achieve broader functionalities.

Abstract:Liquid crystal materials, with their unique properties and diverse applications, have long captured the attention of researchers and industries alike. From liquid crystal displays and electro-optical devices to advanced sensors and emerging technologies, the study and application of liquid crystals continue to be of paramount importance in the fields of materials science, chemistry and physics. With the ever-increasing complexity and diversity of liquid crystal materials, researchers face new challenges in understanding their behaviors, properties, and potential applications. On the other hand, machine learning, a rapidly evolving interdisciplinary field at the intersection of computer science and data analysis, has already become a powerful tool for unraveling implicit correlations and predicting new properties of a wide variety of physical and chemical systems and structures. Here we aim to consider how machine learning methods are suitable for solving fundamental problems in the field of liquid crystals and what are the advantages of this artificial intelligence based approach.

Abstract:Quantum computing promises exponential advances in information processing, necessitating the development of appropriate materials for implementing quantum qubits and gates. Liquid crystals, known for their electro-optical characteristics and use in displays, have recently received attention as prospective candidates for quantum computing applications. This review delves into the role of liquid crystals in quantum information science, starting with an overview of their characteristics, classification and phase transition mechanisms. It then directs focus to their quantum attributes, their ability to display quantum coherence and entanglement. The review also showcases validations of quantum phenomena in liquid crystals, highlighting their suitability for use in quantum systems. Recent advances are discussed, including the development of liquid crystal qubits, quantum gates, and circuits. The review also explores the integration of liquid crystals with quantum photonic devices, emphasizing their role in enhancing quantum communication and information processing. Potential room temperature operation applications such as quantum sensing and quantum cryptocurrency are illustrated through case studies. Challenges such as material synthesis, decoherence, stability, and compatibility with existing technologies are addressed, with proposed solutions including hybrid systems and novel fabrication techniques. Future research directions focus on innovative liquid crystal materials, interdisciplinary collaboration, and their use in emerging quantum technologies.

Abstract:Molecular chirality leads to a wonderful variety of equilibrium structures, from the simple cholesteric phase to the twist-grain-boundary phases, and it is responsible for interesting and technologically important materials like ferroelectric liquid crystals. This paper will review some recent advances in our understanding of the connection between the chiral geometry of individual molecules and the important phenomenological parameters that determine macroscopic chiral structure. It will then consider chiral structure in columnar systems and propose a new equilibrium phase consisting of a regular lattice of twisted ropes.

Rapid Conformational Analysis of Semi-Flexible Liquid Crystals

Abstract:We present an approach for rapid conformational analysis of semi-flexible liquid crystals. We use a simple graphical user interface (GUI) tool that leverages rules-based methods for efficient generation of bend-angle distributions, offering a significant improvement over traditional single-conformer analysis. Our methods demonstrated proficiency in approximating molecular shapes comparable to those obtained from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, albeit with notable deviations in the under sampling of hairpin conformations and oversampling of extended configurations. Re-evaluation of existing data revealed an apparent weak correlation between NTB transition temperatures and bend angles, underscoring the complexity of molecular shapes beyond mere geometry. Furthermore, we integrated this conformational analysis into a pipeline of algorithmic molecular design, utilizing a fragment-based genetic algorithm to generate novel cyanobiphenyl-containing materials. This integration opens new avenues for the exploration of liquid crystalline materials, particularly in systems where systematic conformer searches are impractical, such as large oligomeric systems. Our findings highlight the potential and growing importance of computational approaches in accelerating the design and synthesis of next-generation liquid crystalline materials.

Abstract:Vector vortex beams (VVBs) have attracted significant attention in both classical and quantum optics. Liquid crystal (LC), beyond its applications in information display, has emerged as a versatile tool for manipulating VVBs. In this review, we focus on the functions and applications of typical LC devices in recent studies on controlling the space-variant polarized vortex light. Manipulation of VVBs through patterned nematic LC optical elements, patterned cholesteric LC optical elements, self-assembled defects, and LC spatial light modulators is discussed separately. Moreover, LC-based novel optical applications in the field of quantum information are reviewed.
