Abstract:A series of the main chain liquid crystal polymers with X-shaped mesogens were synthesi-ed by low temperature solution polycondensation. All polymer samples had obvious thermotropic properties. Both flexible spacers and substituents had influence on the liquid-crystalline behaviour of the polymers The polymers were characterized by IR spectrometer, H-NMR spectro-scopy, DSC, polarizing microscopy and X-ray diffractometre.

Abstract:Liquid crystals are synthetic and biological viscoelastic anisotropic soft matter materials that combine liquid fluidity with crystal anisotropy and find use in optical devices, sensor/actuators, lubrication, super-fibers. Frequently mesogens are mixed with colloidal and nanoparticles, other mesogens, isotropic solvents, thermoplastic polymers, cross-linkable monomers, among others. This comprehensive review present recent progress on meso and macro scale thermodynamic modelling, highlighting the (i) novelties in spinodal and binodal lines in the various phase diagrams, (ii) the growth laws under phase transitions and phase separation, (iii) the ubiquitous role of metastability and its manifestation in complex droplet interfaces, (iv) the various spinodal decompositions due to composition and order fluctuations, (v) the formation of novel material architectures such as colloidal crystals, (vi) the particle rich phase behaviour in liquid crystal nanocomposites, (vii) the use of topological defects to absorb and organize nanoparticles, and (viii) the ability of faceted nanoparticles to link into strings and organize into lattices. Emphasis is given to highlight dominant mechanisms and driving forces, and to link them to specific terms in the free energies of these complex mixtures. The novelties of incorporating mesophases into blends, solutions, dispersions and mixtures is revealed by using theory, modelling, computation, and visualization.

Abstract:A series of liquid crystalline polymers with T-shaped two-dimensional mesogenic units were synthesized via low temperature solution polycondensation of 2-(4'-alkoxy-phenyl) hydroquinone with various diacyl dichlorides. The polymers were found to be nematic and shown thermotropic liquid crystalline behaviors through observations using DSC, polarized microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The melting temperature T-m and the isotropization temperature T-i of the polymers change regularly with varying of the monomer structures.

Abstract:A series of thermotropic, liquid crystalline (LC) polyesters was prepared in which the mesogenic group contained an unusually large, polarizable pendant group in an attempt to increase intermolecular interactions so as to impart a more isotropic character to the mechanical properties of the solid polymer. The series included repeating units containing main chain, polymethylene flexible spacers of increasing lengths. All of the polymers formed stable nematic LC phases and had relatively low melting temperatures, but recrystallization from the melt was very slow in each case.

Abstract:Seven novel mesogen-jacketed liquid crystal polymers were designed and synthesized. The effects of chemical structure and steric features on liquid crystalline phase forming were studied. It was found that the introduction of polar or polarable group at the end of the mesogen units could increase the melting point and clear point of monomers, The bigger the axial ratio of mesogen units, the higher the melting point and clear point, The stability of liquid crystalline phase was enhanced by polymerization. The stronger of the polarity, rigidity and steric requirement of the mesogen units, the higher the glass transition temperature of the polymers. The amide group can increase the melting point of monomers and glass transition temperature of polymers no matter it was used as the end group or linkage of the mesogen units. However, the stability of liquid crystalline phase was increased by the amide end groups and decreased by the amide linkages.

This article traces the development of liquid crystal science, focusing on liquid crystal epoxy resins (LCERs) and emphasizing the crucial role of mesogens and their diverse effect on the materials. It also highlights the importance of understanding the morphology of LC polymers, explaining their profound impact on material properties and performance. It explores the cross-linking process of liquid crystal resins and composites, describing how changes in structural factors affect material structure. The article also provides information about hardeners and their influence on the cross-linked structure. Various nanofillers were also discussed, elucidating their impact on the resulting composites.

Abstract:Liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) have drawn much interest because of their superior properties and widespread applications in high-performance polymer fibers, optics, energy storage, shape memory, surface modification, data storage, actuator, etc. LCPs can self-assemble into various liquid crystalline (LC) phases, such as nematic, smectic, columnar, and cholesteric phases. The self-assembling structures of LCPs can be influenced by architectures and chemical structures of the polymer backbone, mesogenic unit, flexible spacer, surrounding alkyl tail, etc. In the last decades, the structure-property relationships of LCPs have been researched extensively. In this perspective, the history, self-assembly, and applications of main-chain, side-chain, mesogen-jacketed, dendronized, main-chain/side-chain, and crosslinked LCPs are briefly reviewed. Finally, the future direction of research on LCPs is also discussed.

Abstract:Liquid crystals (LCs) are such a kind of important materials that influence our life,which are not limited to displays such as televisions and personal computers.Combined with photoresponsive properties,LCs can also enable to develop a great variety of applications in various fields,including flat panel displays,photonics,photo-driven devices,and more recent nanotechnology.LCs demonstrate special characteristics of both mobility of an isotropic liquid and ordered regularity of a crystalline solid,thus termed as intermediate phase.The unique features of LCs provide liquid crystalline materials with interesting properties such as ability to self-assembly,fluidity with long-range order,molecular cooperation motion,birefringence and anisotropy in physical properties (optical,mechanical and electrical),molecular alignment at surfaces induced by external fields,deformation of LC elastomers responding to certain stimuli.Responsive deformation of LC polymers (LCPs) with different alignment of molecules is reviewed.Perspective and further applications in the future of LCPs in the field of micro fluid and micro robot are discussed.

Abstract:Amorphous and melted components can segregate into the interlamellar or interspherulitic regions of polymer crystals in their blends/mixtures; this phase behavior strongly influences the physical properties and functions of materials. However, it is experimentally difficult to evaluate the spatial distributions of the other components in polymer crystals. Herein, we use a small-molecule liquid crystal (LC) as a probe and find that it forms different solid phases when mixed with the semicrystalline polymer poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA). The LC can form the metastable phase at the lower PLLA crystallization temperature but the stable phase at the higher PLLA crystallization temperature in the PLLA/LC mixture. The formation of LC metastable and stable phases is attributed to the segregation of the LC material in the interlamellar and interspherulitic regions of polymer crystals, respectively. This study provides a potential way to evaluate the spatial segregation in the crystallization-induced microphase separation of polymer blends/mixtures.

Abstract:Bottom-up materials design by the conceiving of new molecular building blocks is powerful and chemists are uniquely qualified to innovate. Liquid crystals (LCs) and related soft crystals, collectively called mesophases, naturally create materials with dynamic properties. The thermotropic LC state has a liquid-like intermolecular disorder, but the cooperative nature of these materials facilitates a long-range directional order (alignment) that couples strongly to applied electric/magnetic fields and interfaces. Thermotropic LCs are held together by mesogen cores, which are often unsaturated with anisotropic polarizability, and are appended with flexible (often n-alkane) side chains. Thermal excitation of the side chains produces large amplitude motions that drive a melting transition, and the anisotropic attractions between mesogenic cores produce a directional organization that produces the LC order. LCs are liquids as defined by thermodynamics and may not contain three-dimensional (3D) organization. However, in many cases there are 3D ordered phases below the melting temperatures, which are soft (deformable) plastic materials. Unconventional mesogens offer opportunities to create responsive molecular assemblies with optical, electronic, or magnetic activity. I will detail in this account my efforts to control these dynamic states with the goal of creating polar organizations in columnar LCs. The use of molecular shape, dative bonding, and dynamic correlations between molecules in fluid/plastic phases will be highlighted and how applied electric fields can polarize select materials.

Abstract:series of liquid crystalline and non-liquid-crystalline sequential copolymers was synthesized by radical polymerization of styrene and the mesogenic monomer. The liquid crystalline behavior of the copolymers was studied by DSC, polarized optical thecroscopy and X- ray diffraction. It was found that the mesogenic monomen and all copolymers except the CP -9, showed good thermotropic liquid crystallinity and broad temperature ranges between T8 and Ti, The molecular weights, transition temperatures and decomposition temperatures of the copolymers changed regularly with the increase of the contents (mol%) of styrene in the copolymers.

Abstract:Liquid crystal polymers (LCPs) have gained tremendous scientific attention due to their potentials in fabrication of intelligent soft robots and responsive devices. Modulating the superstructures by molecular engineering via a bottom-up way and gaining insight into the relationships between molecular structures and self-assembled architectures are of significance in understand the self-organization mechanism of mesogens as well as the fabrication of advanced functional materials, given that the properties and stimuli-responsiveness of LCPs are mainly determined by the self-organized superstructures. In this study, a series of innovative homopolymers featuring distinct terminal groups in the side chains were synthesized via thiol-ene click reactions between poly[3-mercaptopropylmethylsiloxane] (PMMS) and a range of monomers with a nearly identical rigid core but varying terminal substituents (4-methylcyclohexyl, p-methylbenzene, and p-biphenyl groups). The thermal behaviour, phase structure, and molecular packing mode were systemically investigated. Experiment results indicate the formation of a smectic E-smectic A-isotropic phase sequence for most polymers. Intriguingly, an additional loosely stacked hexagonal smectic B phase is observed in P-4, which bears biphenyl mesogenic tails, positioned between smectic E and smectic A phases as the temperature increases. This work presents an effective regulatory strategy for achieving diverse phase transition behaviors and hierarchical constructions through subtle tuning of the molecular structure in the side chains of liquid crystalline polysiloxanes. Through rational molecular design and modulation of terminal groups in building blocks, as an efficient approach, it is quite efficient to achieve diverse phase transition behaviours and adjust phase structures.

Abstract:Series of thermotropic liquid crystalline poly (aryl ether ketone) s were synthesized by mucleophilic substitution reactions of 4,4'-biphenol and substituted hydroquinone with different difluoromonomers, The relationship between structure and properties of the novel copolymers was investigated. For the copolymers with liquid crystalline properties, their melting transition temperatures show no great change with increase the content of the crystal-disrupting unit. The reason is that the crystal phase is directly transformed from the ordered liquid crystal phase. Side-groups have important effect on mesophase stability, The temperature range of mesophase stability for the chloro-polymers is smaller than those of other series of copolymers (P-phenyl, t-butyl, methoxy, 3-trifluoromethylbenzene). This behavior indicates that the effect of geometric repulsive factor on the thermodynamic stability of the mesophase is much larger than that of the polarizability attractive factor. Different ordered liquid crystal phases are observed in the polymers with different molecular weights. At low molecular weight, highly ordered smectic liquid crystal phases form. With increasing the molecular weight, the ordered degree of the liquid crystals decreases, and only the nematic liquid crystal phase is observed in the polymer with higher molecular weight.

Abstract:A mesogen-jacketed liquid crystal polymer, poly {2,5-bis[(4'-hexyloxyphenyl) oxycarbonyl]styrene} (PHPCS) with number-averaged molecular weight of 1.28 x 10(5) and polydispersity of 1.48 was prepared via 2, 2, 6,6-tetramethyl-piperidinyloxy mediated free radical polymerization. The thermotropic behavior was studied by a combination of differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry, polarized optical microscope and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. PHPCS was not crystalline over the entire temperature region studied. On heating, PHPCS first became an isotropic melt at glass transition temperature (T-g) and then a mesophase at temperatures much higher than T-g. On subsequent cooling, the formed ordered phase disappeared above T-g Contrary to theoretical predictions and previous experimental observations, the transition from isotropic melt to liquid crystalline phase was an endothermic process and the order-disorder transition took place with concurrence of heat release.

Abstract:A new series of the ligands of liquid crystal polymers with T-shaped two-dimensionl mesogens was synthesied by solution condensation polymerization by using 4,4'-(alpha,omega-alkylenedioyloxy)-dibenzol dichlorids with 2, 4-dihydroxy-4'-alkoxyl azobenzene as the monomers. The low molecular weight compounds were analyzed by elementary analysis, IR, H-1-NMR and MS. The ligands were characterized by GPC, DSC, TG, WAXD and polarizing microscopy with a heating stage. It was found that all the ligand of polymers went to liquid crystal phase when heated to their T-m, the threaded texture and, schlieren texture can be observed. Both T-m and T-i of all the ligands change regulary with the increase of the end alkoxy group length and when the flexible spacer unit in the ligand gets longer. It is worth specially being noted that some of the ligands having no end substituent groups were also found to show liquid crystal behaviors, which would be a new subject for further research on the formation mechanism and the texture of such kind of the ligands.
STATISTICS OF A NOVEL CLASS OF LIQUID CRYSTAL POLYMERS

Abstract:A novel class of the liquid crystal polymers with mesogens laterally attached to flexible main chain backbones has been synthesized recently by us. While the flexible backbones tend to take configuration of maximum entropy the mesogenic side groups tend to orientate because of the anisotropie soft dispersion forces. A mean field theory is presented to describe the competition between these two trends which makes it possible for this class of polymers to show anisotropic (liquid crystal) phase within certain temperature range where the polymer main chains and the side chain mesogens will take approximately parallel arrangement, which is different from the normal side chain liquid crystal polymers. The temperature range of the liquid crystal phase, its ordering and phase transition all depend on the flexibility of the backbone, the strengthof the anisotropic forces of the side groups and the hinge elasticity. The results show that the liquid crystalisotropic phase transition is of the first order. The phase diagram, i. e. the dependence of the transition temperature on the structure of the polymers is also given.

Abstract:The peculiarity of a series of side-chain liquid crystalline polymers with mesogenic units attached directly in a side-on mode was studied by using nuclear magnetic resonance, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, polarizing microscopy and molecular simulation techniques. It was found that in special cases molecules of side-chain liquid crystalline polymers may become rather rigid as a whole and take the more extended conformation, like a rod with the main chain approximately parallel to the rod axis. The side-chain mesogens are packed around the main chain with their axes almost perpendicular to the main chain. These side-chain polymers may exhibit behaviour similar to that of main-chain polymers. The effect of interaction between main-chain and side-chain mesogens on the mesophase formation of side-chain polymers and the influence of mesogen location in molecules on the behaviour of liquid crystalline polymers are discussed.

Abstract:Mesogens, which are typically stiff rodlike or disklike molecules, are able to self-organize into liquid crystal (LC) phases in a certain temperature range. Such mesogens, or LC groups, can be attached to polymer chains in various configurations including within the backbone (main-chain LC polymers) or at the ends of side-chains attached to the backbone in an end-on or side-on configuration (side-chain LC polymers or SCLCPs), which can display synergistic properties arising from both their LC and polymeric character. At lower temperatures, chain conformations may be significantly altered due to the mesoscale LC ordering; thus, when heated from the LC ordered state through the LC to isotropic phase transition, the chains return from a more stretched to a more random coil conformation. This can cause macroscopic shape changes, which depend significantly on the type of LC attachment and other architectural properties of the polymer. Here, to study the structure–property relationships for SCLCPs with a range of different architectures, we develop a coarse-grained model that includes torsional potentials along with LC interactions of a Gay–Berne form. We create systems of different side-chain lengths, chain stiffnesses, and LC attachment types and track their structural properties as a function of temperature. Our modeled systems indeed form a variety of well-organized mesophase structures at low temperatures, and we predict higher LC-to-isotropic transition temperatures for the end-on side-chain systems than for analogous side-on side-chain systems. Understanding these phase transitions and their dependence on polymer architecture can be useful in designing materials with reversible and controllable deformations.
