Abstract:Tensor fields are at the heart of many science and engineering disciplines. Many tensor visualization methods separate the tensor into component eigenvectors and visualize those instead. Eigenvectors are normally ordered according to their eigenvalues: the eigenvectors corresponding to the smallest, median, or largest eigenvalues are in their corresponding groups. We show that this ordering strategy is undesirable for liquid crystal systems and propose a new approach, where the vectors are grouped to minimize some local energy. The grouping process is reminiscent of the epitaxial expansion in the anchoring of liquid crystals on a surface. The new algorithm is successfully applied to a liquid crystal system to study the biaxiality structure near a defect.
A finite element method for nematic liquid crystals with variable degree of orientation

Abstract:We consider the simplest one-constant model, put forward by J. Ericksen, for nematic liquid crystals with variable degree of orientation. The equilibrium state is described by a director field $\mathbf{n}$ and its degree of orientation $s$, where the pair $(s, \mathbf{n})$ minimizes a sum of Frank-like energies and a double well potential. In particular, the Euler-Lagrange equations for the minimizer contain a degenerate elliptic equation for $\mathbf{n}$, which allows for line and plane defects to have finite energy. We present a structure preserving discretization of the liquid crystal energy with piecewise linear finite elements that can handle the degenerate elliptic part without regularization, and show that it is consistent and stable. We prove $\Gamma$-convergence of discrete global minimizers to continuous ones as the mesh size goes to zero. We develop a quasi-gradient flow scheme for computing discrete equilibrium solutions and prove it has a strictly monotone energy decreasing property. We present simulations in two and three dimensions to illustrate the method's ability to handle non-trivial defects. Abstract:A lattice Boltzmann scheme is presented which recovers the dynamics of nematic and chiral liquid crystals; the method essentially gives solutions to the Qian-Sheng equations for the evolution of the velocity and tensor order-parameter fields. The resulting algorithm is able to include five independent Leslie viscosities, a Landau-deGennes free energy which introduces three or more elastic constants, a temperature dependent order parameter, surface anchoring and viscosity coefficients, flexo-electric and order electricity and chirality. When combined with a solver for the Maxwell equations associated with the electric field, the algorithm is able to provide a full 'device solver' for a liquid crystal display. Coupled lattice Boltzmann schemes are used to capture the evolution of the fast momentum and slow director motions in a computationally efficient way. The method is shown to give results in close agreement with analytical results for a number of validating examples. The use of the method is illustrated through the simulation of the motion of defects in a zenithal bistable liquid crystal device.

Abstract:Nematicons upgrade the recognition of light localization in the reorientation of non-local media. the current research employs a powerful integral scheme using a different procedure, namely, the modified simple equation method (MSEM), to analyze nematicons in liquid crystals from the controlling model. The expanded MSEM is investigated to enlarge the applicability of the standard one. The suggested expansion depends on merging the MSEM and the ansatz method. The new generalized nonlinear n-times quadruple power law is included. With the aid of the symbolic computational package Mathematica, new explicit complex hyperbolic, periodic, and more exact spatial soliton solutions are derived. Moreover, the related existence constraints are obtained. To show the dynamical properties of some of the obtained nematicons, three-dimensional profiles with corresponding contours are depicted with the choice of appropriate values of arbitrary parameters. The fractional impacts in various applicable senses are analyzed to investigate the generality of the considered model.

Abstract:Platonic-solid-like particles in liquid crystals introduce intriguing opportunities for engineering complex materials with tailored properties. Inspired by Platonic solids' geometric simplicity and symmetry, these particles possess well-defined shapes such as cubes, tetrahedra, octahedra, dodecahedra, and icosahedra. When dispersed within a nematic liquid-crystalline media, these particles interact with the surrounding medium in intricate ways, influencing the local orientational order of liquid crystal molecules. In this work, we implement continuum simulations to study how the combination of particle shape and surface anchoring gives rise to line defects that follow the edges of the particles and how they are affected by the presence of a Poiseuille flow. Platonic-solid-like particles in liquid crystals have shown promise in diverse applications ranging from photonics and metamaterials to colloidal self-assembly and responsive soft materials.

Abstract:Polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) composites have long been a focus of study for their unique electro-optical properties which have resulted in various applications such as switchable (transparent/translucent) windows. These composites are manufactured using desirable "bottom-up" techniques, such as phase separation of a liquid crystal/polymer mixture, which enable production of PDLC films at very large scales. LC domains within PDLCs are typically spheroidal, as opposed to rectangular for an LCD panel, and thus exhibit substantially different behaviour in the presence of an external field. The fundamental difference between spheroidal and rectangular nematic domains is that the former results in the presence of nanoscale orientational defects in LC order while the latter does not. Progress in the development and optimization of PDLC electro-optical properties has progressed at a relatively slow pace due to this increased complexity. In this work, continuum simulations are performed in order to capture the complex formation and electric field-driven switching dynamics of approximations of PDLC domains. Using a simplified elliptic cylinder (microcapillary) geometry as an approximation of spheroidal PDLC domains, the effects of geometry (aspect ratio), surface anchoring, and external field strength are studied through the use of the Landau--de Gennes model of the nematic LC phase.

Abstract:A new method is presented for mesoscopic simulations of particle dispersions in nematic liquid crystal solvents. It allows efficient first-principle simulations of the dispersions involving many particles with many-body interactions mediated by the solvents. A simple demonstration is shown for the aggregation process of a two dimentional dispersion.

Abstract:Determination of material and optical properties in structured films and fluids, e.g., refractive index and material thickness, usually requires special optical geometries and instruments. This prevents one from studying optical properties especially in soft matter systems with nonuniform hierarchical and orientational structures. Here we develop a data measurement and analysis scheme by combining Monte Carlo and Berreman 4x4 matrix approaches for obtaining the dispersion of refractive index, material thickness, and the optical anisotropy from a single shot of simple transmission or reflection spectroscopy data at a time scale of seconds. We show the validity of the method by determining Cauchy coefficients and sample thickness of the well-known reference materials of both isotropic toluene solution and anisotropic material of a nematic liquid crystal (4-cyano-4′-pentyl biphenyl). This enables us to further investigate the unknown optical properties of an emerging ferroelectric nematic material, the so-called RM734.

Abstract:The optical properties of liquid crystals serve as the basis for display, diagnostic, and sensing technologies. Such properties are generally controlled by relying on electric fields. In this work, we investigate the effects of microfluidic flows and acoustic fields on the molecular orientation and the corresponding optical response of nematic liquid crystals. Several previously unknown structures are identified, which are rationalized in terms of a state diagram as a function of the strengths of the flow and the acoustic field. The new structures are interpreted by relying on calculations with a free energy functional expressed in terms of the tensorial order parameter, using continuum theory simulations in the Landau-de Gennes framework. Taken together, the findings presented here offer promise for the development of new systems based on combinations of sound, flow, and confinement.

Abstract:Liquid crystals establish a nearly unique combination of thermodynamic, hydrodynamic, and topological behavior. This poses a challenge to their theoretical understanding and modeling. The arena where these effects come together is the mesoscopic (micron) scale. It is then important to develop models aimed at capturing this variety of dynamics. We have generalized the particle-based multiparticle collision dynamics (MPCD) method to model the dynamics of nematic liquid crystals. Following the Qian-Sheng theory [Phys. Rev. E 58, 7475 (1998)1063-651X10.1103/PhysRevE.58.7475] of nematics, the spatial and temporal variations of the nematic director field and order parameter are described by a tensor order parameter. The key idea is to assign tensorial degrees of freedom to each MPCD particle, whose mesoscopic average is the tensor order parameter. This nematic MPCD method includes backflow effect, velocity-orientation coupling, and thermal fluctuations. We validate the applicability of this method by testing (i) the nematic-isotropic phase transition, (ii) the flow alignment of the director in shear and Poiseuille flows, and (iii) the annihilation dynamics of a pair of line defects. We find excellent agreement with existing literature. We also investigate the flow field around a force dipole in a nematic liquid crystal, which represents the leading-order flow field around a force-free microswimmer. The anisotropy of the medium not only affects the magnitude of velocity field around the force dipole, but can also induce hydrodynamic torques depending on the orientation of dipole axis relative to director field. A force dipole experiences a hydrodynamic torque when the dipole axis is tilted with respect to the far-field director. The direction of hydrodynamic torque is such that the pusher- (or puller-) type force dipole tends to orient along (or perpendicular to) the director field. Our nematic MPCD method can have far-reaching implications not only in modeling of nematic flows, but also to study the motion of colloids and microswimmers immersed in an anisotropic medium.
Computational molecular field theory for nematic liquid crystals

Abstract:Nematic liquid crystals exhibit configurations in which the underlying ordering changes markedly on macroscopic length scales. Such structures include topological defects in the nematic phase and tactoids within nematic-isotropic coexistence. We discuss a computational study of inhomogeneous configurations that is based on a field theory extension of the Maier-Saupe molecular model of a uniaxial, nematic liquid crystal. A tensor order parameter is defined as the second moment of an orientational probability distribution, leading to a free energy that is not convex within the isotropic-nematic coexistence region, and that goes to infinity if the eigenvalues of the order parameter become nonphysical. Computations of the spatial profile of the order parameter are presented for an isotropic-nematic interface in one dimension, a tactoid in two dimensions, and a nematic disclination in two dimensions. We compare our results to those given by the Landau-de Gennes free energy for the same configurations and discuss the advantages of such a model over the latter.

Abstract:Two types of polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films with normal and tangential anchored nematic droplets are prepared, and the restructuring of nematic droplets in external electric fields is monitored by polarized optical microscopy (POM) and small angle light scattering (SALS). The electric field effect in nematic droplets is analysed qualitatively. Some comparisons and discussion are made, and the complication of this effect is indicated.

Abstract:Disclination lines play a key role in many physical processes, from the fracture of materials to the formation of the early universe. Achieving versatile control over disclinations is key to developing novel electro-optical devices, programmable origami, directed colloidal assembly, and controlling active matter. Here, we introduce a theoretical framework to tailor three-dimensional disclination architecture in nematic liquid crystals experimentally. We produce quantitative predictions for the connectivity and shape of disclination lines found in nematics confined between two thinly spaced glass substrates with strong patterned planar anchoring. By drawing an analogy between nematic liquid crystals and magnetostatics, we find that i) disclination lines connect defects with the same topological charge on opposite surfaces and ii) disclination lines are attracted to regions of the highest twist. Using polarized light to pattern the in-plane alignment of liquid crystal molecules, we test these predictions experimentally and identify critical parameters that tune the disclination lines' curvature. We verify our predictions with computer simulations and find nondimensional parameters enabling us to match experiments and simulations at different length scales. Our work provides a powerful method to understand and practically control defect lines in nematic liquid crystals.
Uncovering Different States of Topological Defects in Schlieren Textures of a Nematic Liquid Crystal

Abstract:Topological defects are ubiquitously found in physical systems and therefore have been an important research subject of not only condensed matter physics but also cosmology. However, their fine structures remain elusive because of the microscopic scales involved. In the case of a liquid crystal, optical microscopy, although routinely used for the identification of liquid crystal phases and associated defects, does not have resolution high enough to distinguish fine structures of topological defects. Here we show that polarised and fluorescence microscopy, with the aid of numerical calculations on the orientational order and resulting image distortions, can uncover the structural states of topological defects with strength m = ±1 in a thin cell of a nematic liquid crystal. Particularly, defects with m = +1 exhibit four different states arising from chiral symmetry breaking and up-down symmetry breaking. Our results demonstrate that optical microscopy is still a powerful tool to identify fine states of liquid crystalline defects.

Abstract:Colloids dispersed in nematic liquid crystals form topological composites in which colloid-associated defects mediate interactions while adhering to fundamental topological constraints. Better realising the promise of such materials requires numerical methods that model nematic inclusions in dynamic and complex scenarios. We employ a mesoscale approach for simulating colloids as mobile surfaces embedded in a fluctuating nematohydrodynamic medium to study the kinetics of colloidal entanglement. In addition to reproducing far-field interactions, topological properties of disclination loops are resolved to reveal their metastable states and topological transitions during relaxation towards ground state. The intrinsic hydrodynamic fluctuations distinguish formerly unexplored far-from-equilibrium disclination states, including configurations with localised positive winding profiles. The adaptability and precision of this numerical approach offers promising avenues for studying the dynamics of colloids and topological defects in designed and out-of-equilibrium situations.

Abstract:We investigate dynamic magneto-optic effects in a ferromagnetic nematic liquid crystal experimentally and theoretically. Experimentally we measure the magnetization and the phase difference of the transmitted light when an external magnetic field is applied. As a model we study the coupled dynamics of the magnetization, M, and the director field, n, associated with the liquid crystalline orientational order. We demonstrate that the experimentally studied macroscopic dynamic behavior reveals the importance of a dynamic cross-coupling between M and n. The experimental data are used to extract the value of the dissipative cross-coupling coefficient. We also make concrete predictions about how reversible cross-coupling terms between the magnetization and the director could be detected experimentally by measurements of the transmitted light intensity as well as by analyzing the azimuthal angle of the magnetization and the director out of the plane spanned by the anchoring axis and the external magnetic field. We derive the eigenmodes of the coupled system and study their relaxation rates. We show that in the usual experimental set-up used for measuring the relaxation rates of the splay-bend or twist-bend eigenmodes of a nematic liquid crystal one expects for a ferromagnetic nematic liquid crystal a mixture of at least two eigenmodes.

Abstract:Of our interest are frustration-driven pattern generating mechanisms in systems which in bulk equilibrium display spatially homogeneous long-range orientational order in absence of perturbations. As testbed material, we select thermotropic nematic liquid crystals. In bulk, they exhibit weakly discontinuous order–disorder phase transformation on varying temperature where the ordered nematic phase features spatially uniform axial order along an arbitrary symmetry breaking direction. However, due to continuous symmetry breaking (CSB) the established order is extremely susceptible to various perturbations which are in real systems in general always present. We theoretically illustrate how diverse complex patterns could be excited. Particularly intriguing configurations could appear if topological defects are present that could be generated via CSB. Our analysis is based on a relatively simple Lebwohl–Lasher-type model in which we could get analytical insight into phenomena of our interest. Using it we illustrate history dependent early stage isotropic-nematic phase evolution and final patterns in presence of "impurities" (e.g., nanoparticles). We show how characteristic effective interaction characteristics predict qualitatively different emerging patterns. Our analysis is based on CSB which is ubiquitous in nature. Consequently, demonstrated mechanisms are expected to manifest also in other condensed matter systems whose ordered phase is formed via CSB. We illustrate how kinetics and impurities could impact key structural properties of the systems of our interest.

Abstract:Intrinsically fluorescent liquid crystals are highly sought after for a variety of applications. Most of the measurements of photo-physical properties of liquid crystals are made in dilute solutions, which is mainly due to the relative ease of both these measurements and the interpretation of data. The fluorescence spectra depend on a number of parameters including the concentration in liquid crystal solutions, the device geometry, and the mesophase in which the spectra have been measured. Working with neat, or concentrated, liquid crystal samples adds experimental complexities such as the inner filter effect (IFE), which affects the collection of data, interpretation of the results, and accuracy of the conclusions. In this paper, we present a systematic study of the photo-physical properties of both a model reference material, Nile red, and a nematic liquid crystal, 4-cyano-4′-pentylbiphenyl (5CB). The influence on the emission spectra of an increasing solute concentration is investigated and discussed. Moreover, a detailed investigation of the influence of the used device geometry, as well as the choice of appropriate data fitting methodologies, are presented.

Neural Network-Based Tensor Model for Nematic Liquid Crystals with Accurate Microscopic Information

Abstract:The phenomenological Landau-de Gennes (LdG) model is a powerful continuum theory to describe the macroscopic state of nematic liquid crystals. However, it is invariably less accurate and less physically informed than the molecular-level models due to the lack of physical meaning of the parameters. We propose a neural network-based tensor (NN-Tensor) model for nematic liquid crystals, supervised by the molecular model. Consequently, the NN-Tensor model not only attains energy precision comparable to the molecular model but also accurately captures the Isotropic-Nematic phase transition, which the LdG model cannot achieve. The NN-Tensor model is further embedded in another neural network to predict liquid crystal configurations in a domain-free and mesh-free manner. We apply the NN-Tensor model to nematic liquid crystals in a number of two-dimensional and three-dimensional domains to demonstrate it can efficiently identify rich liquid crystal configurations in both regular and non-regular confinements.
