Abstract:THE first of these three publications forms a useful andbook for those people who, unacquainted with le oldest of the sciences, take some kind of interest n the stars and other celestial phenomena. A brief ntroduction of five pages form a hors d'oeuvre calculated to whet the appetite for a more serious study if astronomy, and gives a few facts relating to the onstellations, stars, meteors, comets, &c. Then ollow twelve circular charts showing the arrangement of the constellations in the sky at 10 p.m. about he middle of each month. These charts have a blue ackground with white figuring, the zenith being laced at the centre, and they are very clearly printed. Beginners should find little difficulty in locating the various groupings after studying the current chart. It should be noted that on p. 8, where the constellations of the Zodiac are given, Aquarius is wrongly placed jefore Capricornus.

Abstract:IN these 160 pages, the author has endeavoured with success to bring before his readers, in as simple a way as is consistent with the subject, the elements of spherical astronomy. With the exception of a small knowledge of the rudiments of the differential calculus, the mathematical ability is by no means taxed. The order in which the subject-matter has been arranged, and the field which is covered, can be gathered from the following short summary. After dealing first with the sphere generally, and the form and daily motion of the earth, the annual motion round the sun, and the methods of the transformation of coordinates, the measurement of time is next explained, in which Kepler's equation, the equation of time, and the transformation of mean into sidereal time, and vice versâ, are discussed. Then follows a chapter in which the movements of the moon are clearly expounded.

Abstract:PROF. CAYLEY contributes to this volume several memoirs bearing on the theory of attraction. References to some of his earlier papers on the subject are given in Tod-hunter's “History.” The titles of the present papers are “On the Potentials of Polygons and Polyhedra” “On the Potentials of the Ellipse and the Circle,” “Determination of the Attraction of an Ellipsoidal Shell on an Exterior Point,” “Note on a Point in the Theory of Attraction.” The order of the papers will indicate the direction of growth the subject took in the author's hands. Mehler has treated of the attraction of polyhedra, but Prof. Cayley's results “are exhibited under forms which are very different from his, and which give rise to further developments of the theory.” He finds general formulæ for the potentials of a cone and a shell, he then takes the case of a polyhedron or a polygon, obtains results for rectangular pyramid, rectangle, and cuboid, and verifies some of these results. The attraction of an indefinitely thin ellipsoidal shell was shown by Poisson to be in the direction of the axis of the circumscribed cone, this property was also demonstrated geometrically by Steiner. The geometrical investigation was subsequently completed by Prof. Adams so as to obtain from it the finite expression for the attraction of the shell, a result which had also been obtained analytically by Poisson. Prof. Cayley states the geometrical theorems, proves them, and obtains analytical expressions for the attraction of the shell and for the resolved attractions. The law of attraction throughout is that of the inverse square. The same writer also contributes a paper “On the Expression of the Co-ordinates of a Point of a Quartic Curve as Functions of a Parameter.” This last is the development of a process of Prof. Sylvester's. Dr. Hirst's remarks on “Correlation in Space” are a mere abstract of results, a fuller statement of which is reserved for a future communication. Prof. Wolstenholme contributes a neat piece of analysis called “A New View of the Porism of the In and circum-scribed Triangle.” Prof. Sylvester contributes two interesting notes from M. Mannheim with reference to Peaucellier's cells and their application. The Rev. W. H. Laverty supplies an “Extension of Peaucellier's Theorem.” Mr. Routh has a paper “On Laplace's Three Particles, with a Supplement on the Stability of Steady Motion;” Mr. Samuel Roberts contributes a paper “On a Simplified Method of obtaining the Order of Algebraical Conditions.” This method is illustrated by various geometrical applications. Further papers of an analytical character are “On the Solution of Linear Differential Equations in Series,” Mr. J. Hammond; “Note on some Relations between Certain Elliptic and Hyperbolic Functions,” Mr. J. Griffiths; “Notes on Laplace's Coefficients,” Mr. J. W. L. Glaisher. In mixed mathematics we have papers “On the Application of Hamilton's Characteristic Function to the Theory of an Optical Instrument symmetrical about its Axis,” and “On Hamilton's Characteristic Function for a Narrow Beam of Light” Prof. Clerk-Maxwell; “On the Vibrations of a Stretched Uniform Chain of Symmetrical Gyrostats,” Sir W. Thomson. The President (Prof. H. J. Smith) contributes papers “On the Higher Singularities of Plane-curves” and “On the Integration of Discontinuous Functions;” Major J, R. Campbell gives an account of “The Diagonal Scale Principle applied to Angular Measurement in the Circular Slide Rule.” Shorter papers are “On the Method of Reversion applied to the Transformation of Angles,” Rev. C. Taylor (the basis of the communication of which, an abstract only is given in the “Proceedings,” the full paper being printed in the Quarterly Journal of Mathematics, No. 53, is a work on Conic Sections, by G. Walker, 1794); “On some Proposed Forms of Slide Rule” and “On the Mechanical Description of Equipotential Lines,” Mr. G. H. Darwin; and “On the Mechanical Description of a Spheroconic” and “a Parallel Motion,” by Mr. Hart.

Abstract:This book developed from a well received course given by the author to first year students at Wesleyan University, Connecticut. The book starts with a discussion of reflection, refraction and rainbows, goes on to general properties of waves, interference and diffraction, and then on to special relativity, the twin effect and the Lorentz transformation, with a digression on radioactivity. There are numerous excellent diagrams, and the mathematics (all pre-calculus) is presented very clearly. The following are a few quotations from the book intended to give some idea of its coverage. In the preface ``Demonstrations are a vital part of my teaching, and that is one reason why I so often teach about light: the demonstrations work (for there is no friction!), and they are often beautiful.When I ask my students for advice about the course, one of the questions has been this: If there has been a topic or demonstration that you particularly enjoyed, tell me that, too. [One] student had this to say in response: `Mostly, the demonstrations are a GREAT way of seeing what you say - without them, I don't know how I'd learn any of it, or believe you.' I agree, and I wouldn't know how to give a lecture without some props. Beyond that, all of us enjoy the demonstrations and they provide something to look forward to when the alarm clock goes off for an early morning class.'' There appears to be a regrettable recent tendency to move away from real demonstrations towards computer simulations. If this book achieves nothing other than encouraging the use of demonstrations, it will have made a valuable contribution. And for a do-it-yourself demonstration, the author points out that `You do not need any special apparatus to see single-slit interference. A street light or even a car headlight at 100 meters can serve as a light source. Your index and middle fingers...form the slit...'. If you need more details see the book. Another do-it-yourself demonstration of interference is to observe the lights of an approaching car though the fabric of an open umbrella: at large distances a single maximum is seen: as the car gets nearer the point splits and the two lights are resolved. To quote the author again `I am embarrassed to confess how often I have stopped along a street, struck by a particularly good light source, and checked that light still shows interference and that it is indeed a wave phenomenon.' I, too, enjoy making such observations, and hope you do as well. Considerable use is made of helpful quotations. The following, on the importance of good experimental technique, is from Compton, reporting in 1923 on his test to establish the validity of the theory of his Effect: ``I was afraid of being influenced by finding what I was looking for, so I got to help me in the laboratory an assistant who did not know at all what I had in mind. I made the spectrometer settings, while he took the readings. Not knowing what we were looking for, he felt that the readings were very erratic. After the experiment was over, he remarked to me: `It was too bad, wasn't it, Professor, that the apparatus wasn't working so well today?' He was disturbed by the fact that the readings went up and down, and he had no idea that they were just the kind of thing I wanted.'' Reviewing this book has been a pleasure. It should be accessible to sixth form students and first year undergraduates, will refresh the memories of mature graduates, and be an invaluable aid to anyone teaching a related course. Abstract:THIS fascinating work consists of a series of reprints, arranged in logical order, of papers contributed at different times, chiefly to the Proceedings of the Society of Biblical Archæology. Altogether they give us an able summary of what is now known respecting the ancient calendars of the Babylonians, Egyptians, Indians, and Chinese, and a very interesting discussion of the vexed question of the origin of the ancient (especially the zodiacal) constellations, on which subject the author has succeeded in throwing fresh light, her conclusions being corroborated by approaching the question of precessional change from different points of view.

Abstract:Processes of adapting complex information for broad audiences became a pressing concern by the turn of the twentieth century. Channels of communication ranged from public lectures to printed books designed to serve a social class eager for self-improvement. Through analyzing a course of public lectures given by George Howard Darwin (1845-1912) for the Lowell Institute in Boston and the monograph he based on these, The Tides and Kindred Phenomena of the Solar System (1898), this article connects the important practices of public lecturing and book production-two aspects of knowledge dissemination that tend to be studied as separate entities. Darwin, Plumian Professor of Astronomy at the University of Cambridge and son of the famous naturalist, relied on a diverse material culture when lecturing and producing a book. Giving a new account of Darwin's scientific work through exploring his adaption of it for broader audiences, this article connects the diverse material culture Darwin employed in talks to the practice of producing a published book. The content of objects demonstrated and the lantern slides projected during Darwin's lectures evolved to form a book designed to engage broad sectors of society in Europe and the United States. Darwin's lectures were attended at full capacity, while The Tides was soon printed in numerous English editions and translated into German, Italian, Hungarian, and Spanish.

Abstract:A survey that can cover the sky in optical bands over wide fields to faint magnitudes with a fast cadence will enable many of the exciting science opportunities of the next decade. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will have an effective aperture of 6.7 meters and an imaging camera with field of view of 9.6 deg^2, and will be devoted to a ten-year imaging survey over 20,000 deg^2 south of +15 deg. Each pointing will be imaged 2000 times with fifteen second exposures in six broad bands from 0.35 to 1.1 microns, to a total point-source depth of r~27.5. The LSST Science Book describes the basic parameters of the LSST hardware, software, and observing plans. The book discusses educational and outreach opportunities, then goes on to describe a broad range of science that LSST will revolutionize: mapping the inner and outer Solar System, stellar populations in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, the structure of the Milky Way disk and halo and other objects in the Local Volume, transient and variable objects both at low and high redshift, and the properties of normal and active galaxies at low and high redshift. It then turns to far-field cosmological topics, exploring properties of supernovae to z~1, strong and weak lensing, the large-scale distribution of galaxies and baryon oscillations, and how these different probes may be combined to constrain cosmological models and the physics of dark energy.

Abstract:The Sun has been observed through a telescope for four centuries. However, its study made a prodigious leap at the end of the nineteenth century with the appearance of photography and spectroscopy, then at the beginning of the following century with the invention of the coronagraph and monochromatic filters, and finally in the second half of the twentieth century with the advent of space exploration (satellites, probes). This makes it possible to observe the radiations hidden by the Earth's atmosphere (Ultra Violet, X-rays, $\gamma$) and to carry out ''in situ'' measurements in the solar environment. This article retraces the major stages of this fantastic epic in which renowned scientists such as Janssen, Deslandres, d'Azambuja, Lyot and Dollfus entered the scene, giving the Paris-Meudon Observatory a pioneering role in the history of solar physics until 1960. After this golden age, space exploration required large resources shared between nations, which could no longer be implemented within teams or even individual institutes. The development of numerical simulation, a new research tool, also required the pooling of supercomputers.

Abstract:Ground-based optical astronomy necessarily involves sensing the light of astronomical objects along with the contributions of many natural sources ranging from the Earth's atmosphere to cosmological light. In addition, astronomers have long contended with artificial light pollution that further adds to the 'background' against which astronomical objects are seen. Understanding the brightness of the night sky is therefore fundamental to astronomy. The last comprehensive review of this subject was nearly a half-century ago, and we have learned much about both the natural and artificial night sky since. This Review considers which influences determine the total optical brightness of the night sky; the means by which that brightness is measured; and how night sky quality is assessed and monitored in the long term.

Abstract:IT is always interesting to attempt to trace the origin of scientific work, and although the results are liable to error, they provide a key to much that otherwise would be obscure. In this book Mr. Gregory has tried to show how many of Davy's researches and speculations may have had some relation to the scientific knowledge of his day, and in this way the progress of Davy's work is seen to follow a course which makes it more intelligible to us at the present time. The book is more concerned with the scientific achievements than with the personal character of the great chemist, and although Mr. Gregory writes sympathetically, he has not raised some of the questions which have perhaps received too much attention in the past. Davy suffered by too much success on his own part and from too much sensitiveness on the part of others.

Abstract:In the period between 1815 and 1818, Sir Humphry Davy read four papers to the Royal Society and published a monograph dealing with a safety lamp for coal miners, all of which record in detail the experimental work that he carried out, with his assistant Michael Faraday, so as to determine how to prevent catastrophic accidents in coal mines by the explosion of fire-damp (methane) in the presence of a naked flame. This article describes the key experiments that he performed at the Royal Institution and some of the subsequent trials made in the coal mines of the north of England. It begins, however, with an account of Davy's prior achievements in science before he was approached for help by the clergymen and doctors in the Gateshead and Newcastle upon Tyne areas. There is little doubt that the Davy lamp, from the 1820s onwards, transformed the coal industry worldwide. It also profoundly influenced the science of combustion, and in the words of a pioneer in that field, W. A. Bone, FRS, ‘There is no better model of logical experimental procedure, accurate reasoning, philosophical outlook and fine literary expression.’ It is a remarkable fact that it took Davy essentially only two weeks from the time he was given samples of fire-damp to solve the problem and to devise his renowned miner's safety lamp. A brief account is also given of the contemporaneous invention of a safety lamp by George Stephenson, and of some of Davy's subsequent accomplishments. This commentary was written to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society .
