Abstract:Between 1761 and 1776, Christian Horrebow made regular observations of sunspots from Rundetaarn in Copenhagen. Based on these observations he writes in 1775 that "it appears that after the course of a certain number of years, the appearance of the Sun repeats itself with respect to the number and size of the spots". Thus, Horrebow hypothesized the idea of a cyclic Sun several decades before Heinrich Schwabe discovered the solar cycle and estimated its period. This proves the ability of Horrebow as a sunspot observer. In this article, we present a general overview of the work of Christian Horrebow, including a brief biography and a complete bibliography. We also present a translation from Danish to English of his writings on sunspots in the Dansk Historisk Almanak. These writings include tables of daily sunspot measurements of which we discuss the completeness.

Abstract:A novel design of digital sun sensor with large field is presented.The optical system is composed of a filter and panoramic annular lens.This sun sensor has the following features:large field,simple structure and low power consumption.According to the mechanism of the sun sensor,both the model and calibration of the sensor are given based on the experiment platform.In this design,the parameters of the sensor model are determined using LMS method.The authors discussed the error analysis and removes the system error.The result of testing indicates that the sun senor has a large field of 120°×180°and a precision of 0.02°,and it can meet the requirement of attitude determination system because this system needs a large field.

In pursuit of the Sun, from Jules Janssen to the present day

Abstract:The Sun has been observed through a telescope for four centuries. However, its study made a prodigious leap at the end of the nineteenth century with the appearance of photography and spectroscopy, then at the beginning of the following century with the invention of the coronagraph and monochromatic filters, and finally in the second half of the twentieth century with the advent of space exploration (satellites, probes). This makes it possible to observe the radiations hidden by the Earth's atmosphere (Ultra Violet, X-rays, $\gamma$) and to carry out ''in situ'' measurements in the solar environment. This article retraces the major stages of this fantastic epic in which renowned scientists such as Janssen, Deslandres, d'Azambuja, Lyot and Dollfus entered the scene, giving the Paris-Meudon Observatory a pioneering role in the history of solar physics until 1960. After this golden age, space exploration required large resources shared between nations, which could no longer be implemented within teams or even individual institutes. The development of numerical simulation, a new research tool, also required the pooling of supercomputers.

Abstract:This paper shows the light effects and geometric alignments created by the sunlight passing through the stained glasses of the eastern rose window in Mallorca Cathedral and projecting on the inner side of the cathedral's main façade and on the cathedral's floor. As well as providing more accurate information about these already known light effects, this paper makes use of laser scanning techniques and astronomical and geographical concepts in order to graphically display other novel effects which occur in coincidence with certain religious festivities throughout the year.

Abstract:Did the papacy tacitly permit the circulation of an explicitly Copernican book in 1660? One scholar has recently argued that it did. A close analysis of a unique illustration from that book, Andreas Cellarius's atlas Harmonia Macrocosmica, illuminates this argument. This is because the illustration, a diagram showing the relative sizes of the sun, moon, planets, and stars, was among the material reviewed (at the request of the book's publisher) by the Holy Office prior to the book's publication and was pro-Copernican.

Abstract:Near the end of the 16th century Wilhelm IV, Landgraf von Hessen-Kassel, set up an observatory with the main goal to increase the accuracy of stellar positions primarily for use in astrology and for calendar purposes. A new star catalogue was compiled from measurements of altitudes and angles between stars and a print ready version was prepared listing measurements as well as equatorial and ecliptic coordinates of stellar positions. Unfortunately, this catalogue appeared in print not before 1666, long after the dissemination of Brahe's catalogue. With the data given in the manuscript we are able to analyze the accuracy of measurements and computations. The measurements and the computations are very accurate, thanks to the instrument maker and mathematician Jost Bürgi. The star catalogue is more accurate by a factor two than the later catalogue of Tycho Brahe.

Abstract:This invited memoir looks back on my scientific career that straddles the solar and stellar branches of astrophysics, with sprinklings of historical context and personal opinion. Except for a description of my life up to my Ph.D. phase, the structure is thematic rather than purely chronological, focusing on those topics that I worked on throughout substantial parts of my life: stars like the Sun and the Sun-as-a-star, surface field evolution, coronal structure and dynamics, heliophysics education, and space weather. Luck and a broadly inquisitive frame of mind shaped a fortunate life on two continents, taking me from one amazing mentor, colleague, and friend to another, working in stimulating settings to interpret data from state-of-the-art space observatories.

Abstract:Abstract“The Sun does not realize how wonderful it is until after a room is made.”—Louis Kahn. The sun is also a building material; not by itself but in the architectural concept, the sun—light gives value to the space. Encapsulated in some building products, the light and energy of the sun are used to provide active or/and passive gain; sun control is a field of architectural approaches and there are products that provide protection against sun glare and heat. Professional education develops the knowledge to use the sun or protect against it, from the concept to the detail. At least in theory. In practice, a poor or incomplete design generates a chain-reaction: problems that are difficult to repair and that generate other problems that can be sometimes solved only with huge costs. As in the case of all building products, if the specifications are not respected, the product will fail in practice. In any activity in life, the better the “story”/the “script” is analyzed, planned and carried out considering as many angles as possible and integrating specialists from other connected fields, the less bad surprises may occur. A building will never be perfect. It is an art to identify the smallest compromise (however, the compromise is always there). Teaching on how to do things right is fine but the dimension of what is the meaning of “to do right”, can also be understood while tackling failed systems. A failure, analyzed and understood, brings light not only into the specific system but also in the broader field of knowledge and emphasizes and strengthens the theory. The paper presents several examples, including cases of failures, in relation with the sun and light and draws conclusions about the importance of tackling the design of the building considering the biunivocal relation between the architectural object and the natural and anthropic environment.

Abstract:Johannes Kepler described the Copernican universe as consisting of a central, small, brilliant sun with its planetary system, all surrounded by giant stars. These stars were far larger than, and much dimmer than, the sun -- his De Stella Nova shows that every visible star must exceed the size of the Earth's orbit, and the most prominent stars may exceed the size of the entire planetary system. His other writings, including his response to Ingoli, his Dissertatio cum Nuncio Sidereo, and his Epitome Astronomiae Copernicanae, also reflect this Copernican universe. To Kepler, such a universe was an illustration of divine power -- and solid evidence against the stars being suns, against the universe of Giordano Bruno. Kepler's starry universe was in fact the Copernican universe supported by observations of the stars, which showed them to have measureable apparent sizes. Not until the later seventeenth century were those apparent sizes shown to be spurious, allowing for a universe in which the stars were suns.

Abstract:The solar observatory Einstein Tower (Einsteinturm) at the Telegrafenberg in Potsdam is both a landmark of modern architecture and an important place for solar physics. Originally built for high-resolution spectroscopy and measuring the gravitational redshift, research shifted over the years to understanding the active Sun and its magnetic field. Nowadays, telescope and spectrographs are used for research and development, i.e., testing instruments and in particular polarization optics for advanced instrumentation deployed at major European and international astronomical and solar telescopes. In addition, the Einstein Tower is used for educating and training of the next generation astrophysicists as well as for education and public outreach activities directed at the general public. This article comments on the observatory's unique architecture and the challenges of maintaining and conserving the building. It describes in detail the characteristics of telescope, spectrographs, and imagers; it portrays some of the research and development activities.
