Abstract:Considering that induction motors serve as prevalent drivers for industrial loads and recognizing that the deterioration of insulating material between stator turns can culminate in catastrophic failures, the periodic assessment of motor insulation emerges as an imperative task. Such vigilant oversight is indispensable for averting irreparable damage to the machinery and mitigating potential production losses. This study presents a sensor and methodology for practical deployment, detecting turn insulation deterioration. A noteworthy attribute of this method resides in its utilization of low-direct voltages to the machine winding as an alternative to the well-known offline Surge Test, thereby guaranteeing the preservation of insulation integrity. The development and fine-tuning of both the sensor and the diagnostic technique were underpinned by the application of Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Subsequently, the accuracy and reliability of the simulated results were compared to experimental tests. The method exhibits characteristics that render it suitable for industrial applications, including facile sensor positioning, the application of alternating voltage below nominal levels, a low signal acquisition rate, and the diagnostic standard being the Root Mean Square (RMS) value of the flux.
