Abstract:Studies have shown pulse oximeter measurements of blood oxygenation have statistical bias that is a function of race, which results in higher rates of occult hypoxemia, i.e., missed detection of dangerously low oxygenation, in patients of color. This paper further characterizes the statistical distribution of pulse ox measurements, showing they also have a higher variance for patients racialized as Black, compared to those racialized as white. We show that no single race-based correction factor will provide equal performance in the detection of hypoxemia. The results have implications for racially equitable pulse oximetry.

Abstract:Objectives background: This study aimed to assess the impact of race on pulse oximetry reliability, taking into account Spo2 ranges, COVID-19 diagnosis, and ICU admission. Design: Retrospective cohort study covering admissions from January 2020 to April 2024. Setting: National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C) database, consisting of electronic health records from 80 U.S. institutions. Patients/subjects: Patients were selected from the N3C database based on the availability of data on self-identified race and both pulse oximetry estimated Spo2 and Sao2. Subgroups included patients in ICU and non-ICU settings, with or without a diagnosis of COVID-19 disease. Interventions: None. Measurements and main results: The agreement between Spo2 and Sao2 was assessed across racial groups (American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Black, Hispanic or Latino, Pacific Islander, and White). Each patient's initial Sao2 measurement was matched with the closest Spo2 values recorded within the preceding 10-minute time frame. The risk of hidden hypoxemia (Spo2 ≥ 88% but Sao2 < 88%) was determined for various Spo2 ranges, races, and clinical scenarios. We used a generalized logistic mixed-effects model to evaluate the impact of relevant variables, such as COVID-19, ICU admission, age, sex, race, and Spo2, on the risk of hidden hypoxemia, while accounting for the random effects within each hospital. A total of 80,541 patients were included, consisting of 596 American Indian or Alaska Native, 2,729 Asian, 11,889 Black, 13,154 Hispanic or Latino, 221 Pacific Islander, and 51,952 White individuals. Discrepancies between Spo2 and Sao2 were observed across all racial groups, with the most pronounced bias in Black patients. Hidden hypoxemia rates were higher in Black patients across all Spo2 subgroups, for all clinical scenarios. The odds of hidden hypoxemia were higher for Black and Hispanic or Latino patients and for those with COVID-19 disease. Conclusions: Race significantly impacts pulse oximetry reliability. Not only Black and Hispanic or Latino patients were at higher risk for hidden hypoxemia, but also those admitted with a COVID-19 diagnosis. Future in-depth explorations into the underlying causes and potential solutions are needed.

Abstract:Abstract Arterial blood oxygen saturation as measured by pulse oximetry (peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2)) may be differentially less accurate for people with darker skin pigmentation, which could potentially affect the course of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) treatment. We analyzed pulse oximeter accuracy and its association with COVID-19 treatment outcomes using electronic health record data from Sutter Health, a large, mixed-payer, integrated health-care delivery system in Northern California. We analyzed 2 cohorts: 1) 43,753 non-Hispanic White (NHW) or non-Hispanic Black/African-American (NHB) adults with concurrent arterial blood gas oxygen saturation/SpO2 measurements taken between January 2020 and February 2021; and 2) 8,735 adults who went to a hospital emergency department with COVID-19 between July 2020 and February 2021. Pulse oximetry systematically overestimated blood oxygenation by 1% more in NHB individuals than in NHW individuals. For people with COVID-19, this was associated with lower admission probability (−3.1 percentage points), dexamethasone treatment (−3.1 percentage points), and supplemental oxygen treatment (−4.5 percentage points), as well as increased time to treatment: 37.2 minutes before dexamethasone initiation and 278.5 minutes before initiation of supplemental oxygen. These results call for additional investigation of pulse oximeters and suggest that current guidelines for development, testing, and calibration of these devices should be revisited, investigated, and revised.

Abstract:It has long been known that many pulse oximeters function less accurately in patients with darker skin. Reasons for this observation are incompletely characterized and potentially enabled by limitations in existing regulatory oversight. Based on decades of experience and unpublished data, we believe it is feasible to fully characterize, in the public domain, the factors that contribute to missing clinically important hypoxemia in patients with darkly pigmented skin. Here we propose 5 priority areas of inquiry for the research community and actionable changes to current regulations that will help improve oximeter accuracy. We propose that leading regulatory agencies should immediately modify standards for measuring accuracy and precision of oximeter performance, analyzing and reporting performance outliers, diversifying study subject pools, thoughtfully defining skin pigmentation, reporting data transparently, and accounting for performance during low-perfusion states. These changes will help reduce bias in pulse oximeter performance and improve access to safe oximeters.

Abstract:Pulse oximetry (SpO 2 ) is a critical monitor for assessing oxygenation status and guiding therapy in critically ill patients. Race has been identified as a potential source of SpO 2 error, with consequent bias and inequities in healthcare. This study was designed to evaluate the incidence of occult hypoxemia and accuracy of pulse oximetry associated with the Massey-Martin scale and characterize the relationship between Massey scores and self-identified race. This retrospective single institute study utilized the Massey-Martin scale as a quantitative assessment of skin pigmentation. These values were recorded peri-operatively in patients enrolled in unrelated clinical trials. The electronic medical record was utilized to obtain demographics, arterial blood gas values, and time matched SpO 2 values for each PaO 2 ≤ 125 mmHg recorded throughout their hospitalizations. Differences between SaO 2 and SpO 2 were compared as a function of both Massey score and self-reported race. 4030 paired SaO 2 -SpO 2 values were available from 579 patients. The average error (SaO 2 -SpO 2 ) ± SD was 0.23 ± 2.6%. Statistically significant differences were observed within Massey scores and among races, with average errors that ranged from − 0.39 ± 2.3 to 0.53 ± 2.5 and − 0.55 ± 2.1 to 0.37 ± 2.7, respectively. Skin color varied widely within each self-identified race category. There was no clinically significant association between error rates and Massey-Martin scale grades and no clinically significant difference in accuracy observed between self-reported Black and White patients. In addition, self-reported race is not an appropriate surrogate for skin color.

Utility of Skin Tone on Pulse Oximetry in Critically Ill Patients: A Prospective Cohort Study

Abstract:Objective: Pulse oximetry, a ubiquitous vital sign in modern medicine, has inequitable accuracy that disproportionately affects minority Black and Hispanic patients, with associated increases in mortality, organ dysfunction, and oxygen therapy. Previous retrospective studies used self-reported race or ethnicity as a surrogate for skin tone which is believed to be the root cause of the disparity. Our objective was to determine the utility of skin tone in explaining pulse oximetry discrepancies. Design: Prospective cohort study. Setting: Patients were eligible if they had pulse oximetry recorded up to 5 minutes before arterial blood gas (ABG) measurements. Skin tone was measured using administered visual scales, reflectance colorimetry, and reflectance spectrophotometry. Participants: Admitted hospital patients at Duke University Hospital. Interventions: None. Measurements and main results: Sao2-Spo2 bias, variation of bias, and accuracy root mean square, comparing pulse oximetry, and ABG measurements. Linear mixed-effects models were fitted to estimate Sao2-Spo2 bias while accounting for clinical confounders.One hundred twenty-eight patients (57 Black, 56 White) with 521 ABG-pulse oximetry pairs were recruited. Skin tone data were prospectively collected using six measurement methods, generating eight measurements. The collected skin tone measurements were shown to yield differences among each other and overlap with self-reported racial groups, suggesting that skin tone could potentially provide information beyond self-reported race. Among the eight skin tone measurements in this study, and compared with self-reported race, the Monk Scale had the best relationship with differences in pulse oximetry bias (point estimate: -2.40%; 95% CI, -4.32% to -0.48%; p = 0.01) when comparing patients with lighter and dark skin tones. Conclusions: We found clinical performance differences in pulse oximetry, especially in darker skin tones. Additional studies are needed to determine the relative contributions of skin tone measures and other potential factors on pulse oximetry discrepancies.

The light wave transmission that this technology uses is modified by skin pigmentation and thus may vary by skin colour. Abstract:Standard pulse oximeters estimate arterial blood saturation (SaO2) non-invasively by emitting and detecting light of a specific wavelength through a cutaneous vascular bed, such as a digit or the ear lobe. The quantity measured at these peripheral sites is designated as oxygen saturation (SpO2). Most reliable pulse oximeters are calibrated from measurements of healthy volunteers using some form of oxygen desaturation method. As the degree of inducible hypoxemia is limited, the calibration below achievable desaturation levels is usually extrapolated, leading to potential measurement error at low SaO2 values, especially in highly pigmented skin. Such skin color-related errors (SCRE) are the topic of this scoping review. Specifically, this study aimed to identify the combined impact of skin color and reduced SaO2 on the non-invasive assessment of SpO2 and report the consequences of potential inaccuracies. Three databases were searched (Cumulated Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), PubMed, and Web of Science) for peer-reviewed prospective and retrospective studies published in English between 2000 and 2022 involving human patients with hypoxemia that included a measure of skin color (Fitzpatrick scale or race/ethnicity). Ten studies met the criteria and were included in the final review. Eight of these studies reported statistically significant higher pulse oximeter readings in darker-skinned patients with hypoxia compared to their arterial blood gas measurements. Occult hypoxia was more prevalent in Black and Hispanic patients than in White patients. Minority patients overall (Black, Asian, and American Indian) were more likely to have a SaO2 < 88% that was not detected by pulse oximetry (occult hypoxemia) during hospitalization. With greater levels of hypoxemia, the differences between SpO2 and SaO2 were greater. If SaO2 was < 90%, then SpO2 was overestimated in all ethnicities but worse in minorities. In conclusion, the bias found in pulse oximeter readings in the skin of color broadly impacts patients with hypoxemia. The failure of SpO2 measuring devices to detect occult hypoxemia can delay the delivery of life-saving treatment to critically ill patients requiring respiratory rehabilitation and supplemental oxygen therapy. This may lead to adverse health outcomes, increased in-hospital mortality, and complications such as organ dysfunction. An improvement in pulse oximeter detection mechanisms that would include all skin pigmentations is therefore much desired to optimize individual healthcare status and minimize disparities in treatment.

Abstract:Pulse oximetry is a non-invasive optical technique used to measure arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) in a variety of clinical settings and scenarios. Despite being one the most significant technological advances in health monitoring over the last few decades, there have been reports on its various limitations. Recently due to the Covid-19 pandemic, questions about pulse oximeter technology and its accuracy when used in people with different skin pigmentation have resurfaced. This review presents an introduction to the technique of pulse oximetry including its basic principle of operation, technology, and limitations, with a more in depth focus on skin pigmentation. Relevant literature relating to the performance and accuracy of pulse oximeters in populations with different skin pigmentation are evaluated. The majority of the evidence suggests that the accuracy of pulse oximetry differs in subjects of different skin pigmentations to a level that requires particular attention, with decreased accuracy in patients with dark skin. Some recommendations, both from the literature and contributions from the authors, suggest how future work could address these inaccuracies to potentially improve clinical outcomes. These include the objective quantification of skin pigmentation to replace currently used qualitative methods, and computational modelling for predicting calibration algorithms based on skin colour.

Abstract:Reliable estimation of pulse oximetry (SpO 2 ) is indispensable in a neonatal intensive care setting. Along with clinical examination, SpO 2 is a validated non-invasive correlate of PaO 2 to dictate the level of respiratory support. Any alterations that may interfere with this correlation pose significant challenges and lead to inadvertent over- or under-treatment. The authors report a case with an unusual discrepancy between SpO 2 and PaO 2 in a neonate with jaundice who developed bronze baby syndrome while receiving phototherapy. A review of similar previous reports suggests that abnormal pigment accumulation in bronze baby syndrome may render pulse oximetry transiently unreliable.

Abstract:Purpose: Evaluate the SpO 2 -SaO 2 difference between Black and White volunteer subjects having a low perfusion index (Pi) compared to those having a normal Pi. Methods: The Pi data were abstracted from electronic files collected on 7183 paired SpO 2 -SaO 2 samples (3201 Black and 3982 White) from a recently reported desaturation study of 75 subjects (39 Black and 36 White) where SaO 2 values were sequentially decreased from 100 to 70%. The Pi values from that dataset were divided into two groups (Pi ≤ 1 or Pi > 1) for analysis. A Pi value ≤ 1 was considered "low perfusion" and a Pi value > 1 was considered "normal perfusion". Statistical calculations included values of bias (mean difference of SpO 2 -SaO 2 ), precision (standard deviation of the difference), and accuracy (root-mean-square error [A RMS ]). During conditions of low perfusion (Pi ≤ 1, range [0.1 to 1]), overall bias and precision were + 0.48% ± 1.59%, while bias and precision were + 0.19 ± 1.53%, and + 0.91 ± 1.57%, for Black and White subjects, respectively. Results: During normal perfusion (Pi > 1, range [1 to 12]), overall bias and precision were + 0.18% ± 1.34%, while bias and precision were -0.26 ± 1.37%, and − 0.12 ± 1.31%, for Black and White subjects, respectively. A RMS was 1.37% in all subjects with normal perfusion and 1.64% in all subjects with low perfusion. Conclusion: Masimo SET® pulse oximeters with RD SET® sensors are accurate for individuals of both Black and White races when Pi is normal, as well as during conditions when Pi is low. The A RMS for all conditions studied is well within FDA standards. This study was conducted in healthy volunteers during well-controlled laboratory desaturations, and results could vary under certain challenging clinical conditions.

Abstract:Background: Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a technology routinely used in clinical practice to assess blood oxygenation (SpO 2 ) and pulse rate (PR). Skin pigmentation may influence accuracy, leading to health outcomes disparities. Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis primarily aimed to evaluate the accuracy of PPG-derived SpO 2 and PR by skin pigmentation. Secondarily, we aimed to evaluate statistical biases and the clinical relevance of PPG-derived SpO 2 and PR according to skin pigmentation. Methods: We identified 23 pulse oximetry studies (n=59,684; 197,353 paired SpO 2 -arterial blood observations) and 4 wearable PR studies (n=176; 140,771 paired PPG-electrocardiography observations). We evaluated accuracy according to skin pigmentation group by comparing SpO 2 accuracy root-mean-square values to the regulatory threshold of 3% and PR 95% limits of agreement values to +5 or –5 beats per minute (bpm), according to the standards of the American National Standards Institute, Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation, and the International Electrotechnical Commission. We evaluated biases and clinical relevance using mean bias and 95% CI. Results: For SpO 2 , accuracy root-mean-square values were 3.96%, 4.71%, and 4.15%, and pooled mean biases were 0.70% (95% CI 0.17%-1.22%), 0.27% (95% CI –0.64% to 1.19%), and 1.27% (95% CI 0.58%-1.95%) for light, medium, and dark pigmentation, respectively. For PR, 95% limits of agreement values were from –16.02 to 13.54, from –18.62 to 16.84, and from –33.69 to 32.54, and pooled mean biases were –1.24 (95% CI –5.31 to 2.83) bpm, –0.89 (95% CI –3.70 to 1.93) bpm, and –0.57 (95% CI –9.44 to 8.29) bpm for light, medium, and dark pigmentation, respectively. Conclusions: SpO 2 and PR measurements may be inaccurate across all skin pigmentation groups, breaching U.S. Food and Drug Administration guidance and industry standard thresholds. Pulse oximeters significantly overestimate SpO 2 for both light and dark skin pigmentation, but this overestimation may not be clinically relevant. PRs obtained from wearables exhibit no statistically or clinically significant bias based on skin pigmentation.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to analyze signal loss (SL) resulting from low signal quality of pulse oximetry-derived hemoglobin oxygen saturation (SpO 2 ) measurements during prolonged hypoxemic episodes (pHE) in very preterm infants receiving automatic oxygen control (AOC). We did a post hoc analysis of a randomized crossover study of AOC, programmed to set FiO 2 to "back-up FiO 2 " during SL. In 24 preterm infants (median (interquartile range)) gestational age 25.3 (24.6 to 25.6) weeks, recording time 12.7 h (12.2 to 13.6 h) per infant, we identified 76 pHEs (median duration 119 s (86 to 180 s)). In 50 (66%) pHEs, SL occurred for a median duration of 51 s (33 to 85 s) and at a median frequency of 2 (1 to 2) SL-periods per pHE. SpO 2 before and after SL was similar (82% (76 to 88%) vs 82% (76 to 87%), p = 0.3)).

Abstract:Objective: Infants with single ventricle physiology have arterial oxygen saturations between 75 and 85%. Home monitoring with daily pulse oximetry is associated with improved interstage survival. They are typically sent home with expensive, bulky, hospital-grade pulse oximeters. This study evaluates the accuracy of both the currently used Masimo LNCS and a relatively inexpensive, portable, and equipped with Bluetooth technology study device, by comparing with the gold standard co-oximeter. Design: Prospective, observational study. Setting: Single institution, paediatric cardiac critical care unit, and neonatal ICU. Interventions: none. Patients: Twenty-four infants under 12 months of age with baseline oxygen saturation less than 90% due to cyanotic CHD. Measurements and Results: Pulse oximetry with WristOx 2 3150 with infant sensors 8008 J (study device) and Masimo LCNS saturation sensor connected to a Philips monitor (hospital device) were measured simultaneously and compared to arterial oxy-haemoglobin saturation measured by co-oximetry. Statistical analysis evaluated the performances of each and compared to co-oximetry with Schuirmann's TOST equivalence tests, with equivalence defined as an absolute difference of 5% saturation or less. Neither the study nor the hospital device met the predefined standard for equivalence when compared with co-oximetry. The study device reading was on average 4.0% higher than the co-oximeter, failing to show statistical equivalence (p = 0.16). The hospital device was 7.4% higher than the co-oximeter and also did not meet the predefined standard for equivalence (p = 0.97). Conclusion: Both devices tended to overestimate oxygen saturation in this patient population when compared to the gold standard, co-oximetry. The study device is at least as accurate as the hospital device and offers the advantage of being more portable with Bluetooth technology that allows reliable, efficient data transmission. Currently FDA-approved, smaller portable pulse oximeters can be considered for use in home monitoring programmes.

Trends in Retinopathy of Prematurity Among Preterm Infants in California, 2012 to 2021

Abstract:Importance: The incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) has been increasing in the US since 2003. Understanding the progression of and racial disparities in ROP incidence in California can provide a contrasting perspective that may guide future research and practice in the management and prevention of ROP. Objective: To describe how the screening and incidence of ROP among very preterm infants in California changed from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2021. Design, setting, and participants: This study used a cohort of very preterm infants (defined as infants born prior to 32 weeks' gestational age or weighing less than 1500 g) admitted to 60 neonatal intensive care units across California from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2021. Among this cohort, several factors were examined, including (1) the clinical and sociodemographic covariates of the population with and without ROP, (2) trends in screening for ROP, and (3) the incidence of ROP in total and by race and ethnicity. Data analysis was performed in April 2024. Exposures: Race and ethnicity and other birthing parental and infant descriptive characteristics. Main outcomes and measures: Incidence rates of ROP and severe ROP. The primary measures were rates of ROP screening and incidence rates of ROP and severe ROP. Time trends in the risk of ROP and severe ROP were estimated using robust Poisson regression models. Results: In this cohort of 39 269 very preterm infants (<32 weeks' gestational age) eligible for ROP screening, the mean (SD) infant gestational age was 28.6 (2.6) weeks. The mean (SD) birth weight was 1075 (274) g, and 48.6% of infants were female. The birthing parents of the population were 12.6% Asian, 13.3% Black, 44.9% Hispanic White or Hispanic other race, 0.7% Native American/Alaskan, 24.7% non-Hispanic White, and 1.0% Pacific Islander. From January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2021, in California, ROP screening rates remained steady at 95% or greater for eligible infants less than 30 weeks of gestational age for all race and ethnic subgroups. In this study cohort among all very preterm infants (<32 weeks' gestational age), the incidence of ROP decreased from 31% in 2012 to 29% in 2021. Incidence rates of ROP among Asian and Hispanic individuals decreased the most quickly compared to other racial and ethnic groups, narrowing disparities. Conclusions and relevance: In this cohort study, in contrast to increasing national trends, the total incidence of and racial and ethnic disparities in ROP incidence remained steady or decreased from 2012 to 2021 in California.
Accuracy of Pulse Oximetry in the Presence of Fetal Hemoglobin—A Systematic Review

Abstract:Continuous monitoring of arterial oxygen saturation by pulse oximetry (SpO2) is the main method to guide respiratory and oxygen support in neonates during postnatal stabilization and after admission to neonatal intensive care unit. The accuracy of these devices is therefore crucial. The presence of fetal hemoglobin (HbF) in neonatal blood might affect SpO2 readings. We performed a systematic qualitative review to investigate the impact of HbF on SpO2 accuracy in neonates. PubMed/Medline, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health database (CINAHL) and Cochrane library databases were searched from inception to January 2021 for human studies in the English language, which compared arterial oxygen saturations (SaO2) from neonatal blood with SpO2 readings and included HbF measurements in their reports. Ten observational studies were included. Eight studies reported SpO2-SaO2 bias that ranged from −3.6%, standard deviation (SD) 2.3%, to +4.2% (SD 2.4). However, it remains unclear to what extent this depends on HbF. Five studies showed that an increase in HbF changes the relation of partial oxygen pressure (paO2) to SpO2, which is physiologically explained by the leftward shift in oxygen dissociation curve. It is important to be aware of this shift when treating a neonate, especially for the lower SpO2 limits in preterm neonates to avoid undetected hypoxia.

Abstract:Large data sets from electronic health records (EHR) have been used in journal articles to demonstrate race-based imprecision in pulse oximetry (SpO 2 ) measurements. These articles do not appear to recognize the impact of the variability of the SpO 2 values with respect to time ("deviation time"). This manuscript seeks to demonstrate that due to this variability, EHR data should not be used to quantify SpO 2 error. Using the MIMIC-IV Waveform dataset, SpO 2 values are sampled from 198 patients admitted to an intensive care unit and used as reference samples. The error derived from the EHR data is simulated using a set of deviation times. The laboratory oxygen saturation measurements are also simulated such that the performance of three simulated pulse oximeter devices will produce an average root mean squared (A RMS ) error of 2%. An analysis is then undertaken to reproduce a medical device submission to a regulatory body by quantifying the mean error, the standard deviation of the error, and the A RMS error. Bland-Altman plots were also generated with their Limits of Agreements. Each analysis was repeated to evaluate whether the measurement errors were affected by increasing the deviation time. All error values increased linearly with respect to the logarithm of the time deviation. At 10 min, the A RMS error increased from a baseline of 2% to over 4%. EHR data cannot be reliably used to quantify SpO 2 error. Caution should be used in interpreting prior manuscripts that rely on EHR data.

Abstract:: Pulse oximetry is used widely to assess oxygen saturation in nearly all healthcare institutions. : This study aimed to investigate the relationship between epidermal melanin concentrations, determined by colorimetry, and discrepancies between arterial blood saturation (SaO2), determined by arterial blood gas (ABG), and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) determined by pulse oximetry. : This observational, correlational study was conducted over a one-week period in 2024 at the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine. Twenty-eight healthy adult volunteers (14 male; 14 female) with varying skin pigmentation were recruited via convenience sampling. Participants with conditions affecting oxygen saturation were excluded. : Participants underwent non-invasive pulse oximetry to measure peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO₂) and invasive arterial blood gas (ABG) analysis to measure arterial oxygen saturation (SaO₂). Melanin concentrations were measured using DSM III ColorMeter on the dorsal and palmar aspects of the hand. SpO₂ was measured using the Masimo MightyStat® Rx Fingertip Pulse Oximeter, and ABG samples were analyzed using the i-STAT® 1 blood analyzer. : The primary outcome was the difference between SpO₂ and SaO₂ across varying melanin concentrations, hypothesized before data collection. : Analysis revealed a significant difference between SaO2 and SpO2 with a moderately positive correlation with average epidermal melanin concentrations (r = 0.432; 95% CI, 0.07 to 0.693; P = 0.022) and a moderately inverse correlation with average luminance (r = -0.492; 95% CI,- 0.731 to -0.145; P = 0.008). A strong inverse relationship was found between melanin and luminance (r = -0.85; 95% CI -0.928 to -0.698; P <0.001). PO2 emerged as the leading predictor in two regression models, explaining 50.5% of the variance when combined with melanin. : Taken together, these data suggest that pulse oximetry overestimates oxygen saturation in individuals with comparatively high epidermal melanin concentrations. Future investigations that include a broader age range and participants with various comorbidities may provide a more comprehensive understanding of the impact of epidermal melanin on the accuracy of pulse oximetry readings.
