Abstract:This study presents a simple approach to the preparation of hollow silica spheres via template-sacrificial techniques. The hard poly(styrene) (PS) template was prepared by soap-free emulsion polymerization in the boiling state for a specified period, followed by introduction of silane into the reaction system to generate the core–shell PS/silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) spheres without the use of structure-directing agents or surface modification. The SiO 2 shell was constructed by co-hydrolysis/condensation of mixed silane containing various weight ratios of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and triethoxymethylsilane. The degree of compatibility between PS and SiO 2 was shown to be affected by the composition of the silane mixture, and increasing the proportion of TEOS in the silane mix enhanced the mechanical robustness of the SiO 2 shell. Based on the residual weight percentage from thermogravimetric analysis, the portion of SiO 2 in the PS/SiO 2 spheres prepared using various compositions of silane was about 10 wt%. Furthermore, hollow SiO 2 spheres were obtained by calcination of the PS/SiO 2 spheres prepared using an appropriate formulation of silane at 400°C. Scanning electron microscopy analysis indicated that the size of the hollow spheres was about 200 nm, and the spheres displayed a high degree of monodispersity. Observation of certain cavities on the surface of the spheres also demonstrated the hollow structure of the SiO 2 spheres.

Abstract:Hollow spherical β‐SiC was successfully prepared in argon by combustion synthesis using Si powder and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) powder. The phase composition and morphology of spherical products can be controlled by adjusting the Si/C2F4 molar ratio (MSi/(C2F4)). When MSi/(C2F4) = 3, the phase content of β‐SiC is the highest (up to 85.54%), and hollow spherical products obtained; When MSi/(C2F4) ≥ 5, the Si/SiC microspheres are solid. The synthesis mechanism of hollow β‐SiC microspheres is as follows: Si particles react with PTFE releasing heat. Then unreacted Si absorbs heat to form liquid phase microspheres, which is equivalent to the core template to form β‐SiC microspheres by reaction with cracked C. Meanwhile, the silicon diffuses from the core to the shell to form the cavity. This method can synthesize the hollow spherical β‐SiC in a simple way without prearranged spherical template and long synthesis cycle.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

Abstract:A cost-effective approach to prepare carbon spheres (CSs) in a large quantity by pyrolizing the C2Cl4/Fe(C5H 5)2 mixture at 550°C, was discussed. The mixture was loaded into a stain-less steel autoclave and put into an electronic furnace at a constant temperature of 550°C. The dark solid formed after a period of cooling down at room temperature, was divided in to two parts. These products were then analyzed through x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), raman spectrum and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FSEM). FSEM and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) images revealed a large quantities of carbon spheres of the range 30-580 nm sizes.

Abstract:A spherical submicron silicon carbide powder was prepared by carbonizing and calcining the precursor powder fabricated by coating phenolic resin on the surface of silicon powder through a coat mixing process. The obtained spherical silicon carbide pow-der has a narrow and uniform size distribution, and a mean particle size of about 0.1 μm. The formation mechanism of the submicron silicon carbide powder was investigated by analyzing the microstructure transformation. The formation process of submicron silicon carbide is as follows: (1) Silicon–carbon core–shell powder is obtained by carbonizing the precursor powder. (2) A silicon carbide shell is formed by the reaction of liquid silicon and carbon shell inner layer during sintering at 1500 ℃. (3) The silicon carbide shell is fragmented into powder under the effect of thermal stress and the attack of liquid silicon. (4) The continued repetition of the above two steps results in the formation of new layers of silicon carbide until submicron silicon carbide powder is finally formed.

Abstract:Silicon nitride (Si3N4) hollow microspheres with smaller particle size and narrower distribution can be used to prepare closed-cell ceramics as the pore-forming agent to improve heat insulation performance and wave-transparent performance of porous Si3N4 ceramics. In this work, Si3N4 hollow microspheres with a diameter of about 1 μm and a wall thickness of approximately 150 nm were prepared by using the template method combined with the carbothermal reduction nitridation method. The optimum preparation temperature of the Si3N4 hollow microspheres is 1450 °C. The morphology, microstructure, and phase composition of the prepared Si3N4 hollow microspheres were characterized. The formation mechanism of the Si3N4 hollow microspheres was discussed. The dielectric properties of Si3N4 hollow microspheres were measured using the waveguide method at 8.2-12.4 GHz. The results show that the wave-transparent performance of the Si3N4 hollow microspheres is similar to those of α-Si3N4 particles. It can be used as the pore-forming agent or matrix for preparing lightweight, heat-insulating, wave-transparent, and high-strength porous Si3N4 ceramics.

Abstract:Hollow mesoporous silica spheres with radially aligned mesochannels were fabricated successfully by combining hard and soft templating methods. The microstructure, textural properties and the structure regulation approach of the hollow spheres were investigated. The results show that the hollow spheres are perfectly spherical, monodisperse, and present ordered mesochannels with pore size of ~2.20nm, high specific surface area and high pore volume. The textural properties of the hollow mesoporous silica spheres can be tuned by adjusting the alkali-treatment process of the carbon spheres and the concentration of the inorganic source.

Abstract:Hollow SiO 2 nanospheres were fabricated by a modified Stöber method. Hollow Si–SiC composite nanospheres were firstly prepared by reducing the hollow SiO 2 nanospheres by a low temperature magnesiothermic reduction method. In the final samples of hollow Si–SiC composite nanospheres, the hollow nanosphere structure of the precursor was well preserved. SiO 2 nanospheres and Si–SiC composite nanospheres with hollow structure were observed by Scanning electron microscopy and Transmission electron microscopy. Nitrogen absorption–desorption measurement indicated that Si–SiC composite nanospheres had large BET surface area of 150.33 m 2 /g and pores about 12.9 nm, and the hollow structure was indirectly confirmed. X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and TG-DSC were also carried out to characterize microstructure and composition of the final samples. Graphical Abstract

In this approach, positively charged SiO2/Polystyrene core-shell composite particles were synthesized first, when the silica shells from the sol-gel process of tetraethoxysilane were then coated on the surfaces of composite particles via electrostatic interaction, the polystyrene was dissolved subsequently even synchronously in the same medium to form hollow silica spheres with small silica cores. Abstract:Hollow spheres with mesoporous silica nanoparticles shell were synthesized with the use of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and polystyrene (PS) hollow spheres as dual templates. The key to this study is that the uneven surface of the template provides nucleation sites for mesoporous nanoparticles, resulting in the formation of hollow spheres with mesoporous silica nanoparticles shell. The final products with hierarchical mesopores can be obtained through a simple one-step approach.

Abstract:Template process is of importance in the preparation of voided inorganic microspheres. In this paper, monodispersed polystyrene (PSt) template particles with diameter of 360 nm and surface carboxyl groups was first synthesized via batch soap-free emulsion copolymerization of styrene and methacrylic acid, and the core-shell PSt/SiO2 composite microspheres with variable shell thickness were prepared by surface modification-precursor method (PHC) and layer by layer method (LBL), respectively, and the voided SiO2 microspheres were finally obtained by calcining the PSt/SiO2 composite microspheres at 500°C for 4 h. The morphology of the microspheres was characterized on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). In the PHC method, when the PSt template particles were first modified with γ-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (KH-550) followed by reaction with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) in the mixture medium of ethanol and water, the voided SiO2 microspheres with controllable uniformly compact shell thickness and smooth surface were received by calcining. However, the voided SiO2 microspheres resulted from LBL method were easy broken up because of their incompact shell structure, and their surface was much rough. In comparison, PHC method was much easier and more suitable than LBL method in the manufacture of voided SiO2 microspheres via template process.

Abstract:Zirconium dioxide hollow microspheres were prepared using carbonaceous polysaccharide microspheres as a template through a heterogeneously nucleating wrapping technique. Firstly, carbonaceous microspheres wrapped by ZrO2 were synthesized, and then the obtained precursor was calcinated at 800 degrees C for 2 hours to remove the template. Based on SEM, TEM and EDS analysis, the microstructure, composition and thermal decomposition process of the precursor as well as the final products were investigated. The forrnation mechanisms of the core-shell structure precursor and the hollow microspheres were also discussed.

Abstract:The present invention relates to hollow structured materials, particularly, relates to the preparation of inorganic, metal, organic hollow spheres and composite hollow spheres with polymer hollow spheres as template, and to the method for preparing hollow spheres having photic, electric, magnetic, catalytic characteristics and composite structure thereof. With polymer hollow spheres as template, as well as sol-gel method, sedimentation, redox process, the composite hollow spheres were prepared by forced interface method or surface settling process, after the template polymer were eliminated by high temperature sintering or solvent selectively extraction, the inorganic, metal, organic hollow spheres were obtained. By controlling the reactivity of reactants, charging manner, the concentration of reactants and recycle reactive method, the control of the structure and size of the hollow spheres could be realized, and at the same time, the composition of numeral materials could also be realized. The hollow spheres of the invention not only have good dispersibility, but also have excellent strength and size stability. The present invention also relates to the applications of those hollow structured materials.

Abstract:Recent developments in the fabrication of hollow spheres have allowed our group to prepare a new type of macroporous ceramics: hollow sphere ceramics (HSCs). Alumina hollow spheres were first produced by centrifugal spray-drying of particle-stabilized foam slurry. The obtained hollow spheres were sintered together to form HSC at high temperatures. The effect of the sintering temperature on the linear shrinkage, porosity and compressive strength of HSC samples was investigated. When the sintering temperature was increased from 1400°C to 1600°C, the samples shrunk increasingly and the porosity decreased from 59% to 42%, which lead to an increase in the strength of the alumina foams from 6.9 (at 1400°C) to 100.0 MPa (at 1550°C). The mechanical strength of the HSC highly depends on the contact area between the hollow spheres, which could be increased by increasing the sintering temperature, decreasing the size of hollow spheres or by slurry infiltration.
Preparation of hollow alumina spheres by a combined hydrothermal and hard template-assisted method

Abstract:Hollow alumina spheres have been successfully prepared using a combination of hydrothermal and hard template-assisted techniques with aluminum nitrate and glucose as raw materials In this process,aluminum/carbon shell-core composite spheres were first formed by situ catalytic polymerization-absorption (a one-step process) or non-catalytic polymerization-adsorption (a two-step process),and then multi-step thermally treated to obtain the final hollow alumina spheres. The hollow alumina spheres which were prepared by the two-step process had a stable,dense and uniform hollow core-shell structure. However,the hollow core-shell structure obtained by the simple and convenient one-step process was loosely bound together. The groups on the surface of the carbon spheres were identified and the mechanism of formation of the hollow alumina spheres is discussed.

The technique is based on plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) at a temperature of ≈250–300 °C.
