Abstract:The behavior of materials heated by X rays to high energy density state is a very interesting and active research field for application in incrtial fusion, astrophysics and so . on. Some new experiments on X-ray-ablated C 8H8samples were designed and performed on Xingguang one beam frequency-tripled Nd:glass laser facility. The ablation velocity and the mass absorption coefficient of C8H8foam, and the self-emission spectrum of C8H8foil were experimentally obtained. The experiments and results are briefly described.

Abstract:Material removal mechanisms and ablation characteristics were studied by using femtosecond laser micro-machining system induced microstructures on the surfaces of wide band gap ceramic materials, i.e. SiC and Al 2O 3. Scanning electro microscopy (SEM), talysurf profilometer, optical microscopy (OM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) were used to evaluate the samples' morphology and chemical compositions. Gentle and strong damage thresholds for two different etch phase were 0.13 J/cm 2 and 0.61 J/cm 2, respectively. The function of modification parameters and micro-topography were obtained, and the material removal mechanisms strongly depended on the applied energy fluency. Besides, the different elements compositions and surface roughness values of samples affect the morphology of ablation zones were also studied. All of the results provide significant theoretical and technical support for processing high-quality microstructures by femtosecond laser on wide band gap hard-to-machine ceramics.

Abstract:Laser ablation (LA) is gaining acceptance for the treatment of tumors as an alternative to surgical resection. This paper reviews the use of lasers for ablative and surgical applications. Also reviewed are solutions aimed at improving LA outcomes: hyperthermal treatment planning tools and thermometric techniques during LA, used to guide the surgeon in the choice and adjustment of the optimal laser settings, and the potential use of nanoparticles to allow biologic selectivity of ablative treatments. Promising technical solutions and a better knowledge of laser-tissue interaction should allow LA to be used in a safe and effective manner as a cancer treatment.

Abstract:Characterization of the rate and quality of ultrafast-laser ablation of Li-ion battery (LIB) electrode materials is presented for a collection of common and next-generation electrodes. Laser ablated micro-structures on the surface of LIB electrodes have been shown to provide dramatic enhancement of high-rate capability and electrode wetting. However, industrial adoption is hampered by a lack of data enabling informed choice of laser parameters and predicting process throughput. This work bridges this gap by providing characterization of the ablation process at more laser parameters (laser fluence and number of pulses used) than are currently available in the literature. Further, we expand on previous graphite and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) ablation work by extending ablation characterization to new LIB materials, providing high data resolution and adopting new characterization metrics which are relevant for industrial application of this technology. Ablated pores are characterized by their ablated depth, volume, and how the depth and volume ablation rate changes as a function of pore depth. Finally, we provide a detailed characterization of the morphology of laser ablated micro-structures which informs how material and laser parameters affect the quality of laser-processed electrodes.

Abstract:The mechanisms of ultrashort-pulse laser ablation of materials are discussed, and the differences to that of long laser pulses are emphasized. Ultrashort laser pulses offer both high laser intensity and precise laser-induced breakdown threshold with reduced laser fluence. The ablation of materials with ultrashort pulses has a very limited heat-affected volume. The advantages of ultrashort laser pulses are applied in precision micromachining of various materials. Some femtosecond laser pulse micromachining results, including comparison with long pulses, are presented. Ultrashort-pulse laser micromachining may have a wide range of applications where micrometer and submicrometer feature sizes are required.

Abstract:AlON ceramic is widely used in the fabrication of high-quality infrared optical components, and has broad application prospects in aerospace, transparent armor, and infrared weapon windows. A laser can be applied to the processing of AlON ceramic in order to achieve a more flexible and efficient processing of AlON ceramic. In this paper, laser drilling experiments were carried out on AlON samples to investigate the mechanism of laser processing of AlON ceramic. A two-dimensional simulation model of laser ablation of AlON ceramic was established, and the process of material removal was analyzed. By comparing the experimental results with the theoretical analysis, the effect of defocus distance on the quality of AlON laser processing is analyzed.

Abstract:In order to study the effect of liquid properties on laser ablation in liquids, aluminum 5A06 and titanium TB5 targets were irradiated by single-pulse infrared laser in isopropanol, distilled water, glycerin and as a comparison, in air, respectively. Craters induced by laser ablation were characterized using scanning electron and white-light interferometric microscopies. The results show that for liquid-mediated ablation, craters with porous surface structures were formed in aluminum target through phase explosion, while no micro-cavities were formed in titanium target owing to high critical temperature of titanium. In addition, ablation rates of aluminum and titanium targets vary with types of ambient media in accordance with such sequence: air < isopropanol < water < glycerin. Further, the influence of liquid properties on material-removal mechanisms for laser ablation in liquid is discussed. It is concluded that the density, thermal conductivity and acoustical impedance of liquid play a dominant role in laser ablation efficiency. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The use of femtosecond laser pulses allows precise and thermal-damage-free removal of material (ablation) with wide-ranging scientific, medical and industrial applications. However, its potential is limited by the low speeds at which material can be removed and the complexity of the associated laser technology. The complexity of the laser design arises from the need to overcome the high pulse energy threshold for efficient ablation. However, the use of more powerful lasers to increase the ablation rate results in unwanted effects such as shielding, saturation and collateral damage from heat accumulation at higher laser powers. Here we circumvent this limitation by exploiting ablation cooling, in analogy to a technique routinely used in aerospace engineering. We apply ultrafast successions (bursts) of laser pulses to ablate the target material before the residual heat deposited by previous pulses diffuses away from the processing region. Proof-of-principle experiments on various substrates demonstrate that extremely high repetition rates, which make ablation cooling possible, reduce the laser pulse energies needed for ablation and increase the efficiency of the removal process by an order of magnitude over previously used laser parameters. We also demonstrate the removal of brain tissue at two cubic millimetres per minute and dentine at three cubic millimetres per minute without any thermal damage to the bulk.

Abstract:The study on the mechanism of laser ablated cells is of importance to laser surgery and killing harmful cells. Three radiation modes were researched on the ablation characteristics of onion epidermal cells under: laser direct irradiation, focused irradiation and the laser plasma radiation. Based on the thermodynamic properties of the laser irradiation, the cell temperature rise and phase change have been analyzed. The experiments show that the cells damage under direct irradiation is not obvious at all, but the focused irradiation can cause cells to split and moisture removal. The removal shape is circular with larger area and rough fracture edges. The theoretical analysis found out that the laser plasma effects play a key role in the laser ablation. The thermal effects, radiation ionization and shock waves can increase the deposition of laser pulses energy and impact peeling of the cells, which will greatly increase the scope and efficiency of cell killing and is suitable for the cell destruction.

Abstract:The book introduces ‘the state of the art' of pulsed laser ablation and its applications. It is based on recent theoretical and experimental studies. The book reaches from the basics to advanced topics of pulsed laser ablation. Theoretical and experimental fundamental phenomena involved in pulsed laser ablation are discussed with respect to material properties, laser wavelength, fluence and intensity regime of the light absorbed linearly or non-linearly in the target material. The energy absorbed by the electrons leads to atom/molecule excitation, ionization and/or direct chemical bond breaking and is also transferred to the lattice leading to material heating and phase transitions. Experimental non-invasive optical methods for analyzing these phenomena in real time are described. Theoretical models for pulsed laser ablation and phase transitions induced by laser beams and laser-vapour/plasma interaction during the plume expansion above the target are also presented. Calculations of the ablation speed and dimensions of the ablated micro- and nano-structures are performed. The validity and required refinement of different models in different experimental conditions is provided. The pulsed laser deposition process which bases on collecting the ablated particles on a surface is analyzed in terms of efficiency and quality of the deposited films as a function of ambient conditions, target material, laser parameters and substrate characteristics. The interaction between the incident laser and the ablation plasma is analyzed with respect to its influence on the structures of the deposited films and its capacity to generate high harmonics and single attosecond pulses which are highly desirable in pump-probe experiments.

Abstract:The effect of laser irradiation time and laser power on the laser ablation behavior of Ti6Al4V is studied experimentally in the study. It is indicated that the contents of the elements are varied with the locations after laser irradiation. The irradiated region by the laser is segmented into two parts (the laser ablation and heat-affected regions) by two circles. The radii of the inner and outer circles increase with the laser irradiation time for all the laser powers and reach to a stable value of the laser beam radius, respectively. Then the ablation mechanism of the Ti6Al4V is revealed according to the Gaussian distribution of laser beam.

Abstract:Nanosecond laser damage of several aluminum and stainless steel are investigated,which materials are commonly used in the target chamber of laser drive inertial confinement fusion (LICF) device.The experimental data on mass removal and ablation depth during 1064 nm,8 ns fundamental frequency laser ablation are measured.The results show that the aluminum is ablated obviously when the laser fluence is greater than 1.0 J/cm2.The ablation rate of aluminum increased slowly,which has an average value of 2.31±0.89 μg/cm2/shot under laser fluence of 1.2～5.2 J/cm2.Furthermore,the ablation depth of aluminum increases with the increase of laser fluence,while that of stainless steel increases at first and then decreases.Aluminum alloy's ablation depth is significantly higher than that of stainless steel.The ablation mechanism is discussed.The 1064 nm laser absorption of stainless steel is much higher than that of aluminum,which effects the laser energy deposition processes.This study is very helpful to LICF target chamber materials' selection and laser drilling or cutting of the metals.

Abstract:Ablation-resistant performance and damage mechanism of carbon fiber reinforced ZrC based ultra-high temperature ceramic matrix composite prepared via alloyed reactive melt infiltration were investigated using a laser ablation testing method under different laser power densities (LPD) and time periods. Ablation damage of the composite was obviously enhanced tested with increasing LPD and reduced with prolonging tested time. A fused ZrO2 protecting layer was in situ formed during ablation testing, significantly improving the composite's ablation-resistant performance. Ablated microstructures of the composites tested with different LPD were characterized and an ablation mechanism going through three distinct periods was proposed. In the first period, the testing temperature is low and ablation damage was thought to be mainly controlled by the oxidation of carbon, ZrC and Zr2Si phases. With the increase of testing temperatures, ablation damage became controlled by evaporating of ZrO2 and SiO2 formed in oxidizing stage. In the final period with the highest testing temperatures, ablation damage became synergistically dominated by repeatedly scouring away and new formation of the fused ZrO2 protecting layer.

Abstract:In this study, the ablation mechanism of Al2O3/Al2O3-CMCs under laser irradiation and the influence of laser parameters on the ablation efficiency were examined. The experimental results show that the diameters of the ablation centre and transition area are both positively correlated to the irradiation energy, and the irradiation power has a more prominent effect on the diameter of the ablation centre. The molten Al2O3 changes the reflection and transmission properties of laser beam, which results in an elliptical ablation pit. A macro-meso two-scale finite element (FE) model was established to simulate the laser ablation process progressively. The FE results show that the difference in thermal conductivity between the Al2O3 fibre and matrix induces a discrepancy in ablation at the mesoscale. The radius and depth of the ablation pit increase rapidly at the initial stage, then slowly increase with time. A good correlation between the experimental and numerical results was achieved.

Abstract:Irradiating materials with ultra-short laser pulses generates unwanted shock waves which distort the interesting physics. Advanced boundary conditions are presented to erase even very strong shock waves. Depending on the wave length, laser light which leads to ablation may penetrate very deep into the sample. Connection conditions are presented to consistently couple atomistics and continuum description of the sample even at high temperatures together with a discussion of the temperature definition.

Abstract:Metamaterials, typically consisting of sub-wavelength metal-atom arrays and a dielectric layer matrix such as glass fiber reinforced epoxy resin (FR-4), have been widely used in the field of stealth equipment due to their good electromagnetic parameter designability and strong absorption for electromagnetic waves at specific frequencies. In offensive and defensive confrontations, laser weapons pose a serious threat to the survival of stealth equipment. However, the interaction mechanism between the metamaterials and laser and the effect of laser ablation on microwave absorption performance are still unclear. In this work, we firstly irradiated the double arc-shaped Cu-atom array/FR-4 matrix metamaterials by using a high-energy continuous-wave laser and studied the interaction and response mechanism between them. The high temperature caused by laser irradiation leads to the melting of the metal atoms and the pyrolysis of the resin matrix. By simulating and testing the reflection loss of the metamaterials before and after irradiation, we found that the resin pyrolysis products strongly affect the impedance matching characteristics and reduce the microwave absorption properties significantly in extreme cases. Our findings help deeply understand the interaction between the metamaterials and the laser and will show guidance in the applications involving laser-metamaterial interactions.

Abstract:Abstract This paper analytically investigates an ultrashort pulsed laser nanoscale processing for aluminum nitride (AIN) and lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics. Processing characteristics of an ultra-short pulsed laser is different from that of long-pulsed laser due to ultrahigh intensity, ultrahigh power, and ultrashort time. The ultrasmall processing for materials can achieved by an ultra-short pulsed laser. This study proposes a model to analyze an ultrashort pulsed laser nanoscale processing for aluminum nitride (AIN) and lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics. The effects of optical penetration absorption and thermal diffusion on temperature are also discussed. The results reveal that the variation of ablation rate with laser fluences predicted by this work agrees with the available measured data for an ultrashort pulsed laser processing for AIN and PZT. For femtosecond lasers, the optical absorption and thermal diffusion, respectively, governs the ablated depth per pulse at the low and high laser fluences. The thermal diffusion length is small relative to the optical penetration depth for femtosecond laser. The optical penetration absorption governs the temperature in the workpiece. On the other hand, for the picosecond laser, the thermal diffusion length is large compared to the optical penetration depth. The thermal diffusion determines the temperature in the workpiece.

Abstract:The mechanism of ablation of solids by intense femtosecond laser pulses is described in an explicit analytical form. It is shown that at high intensities when the ionization of the target material is complete before the end of the pulse, the ablation mechanism is the same for both metals and dielectrics. The physics of this new ablation regime involves ion acceleration in the electrostatic field caused by charge separation created by energetic electrons escaping from the target. The formulas for ablation thresholds and ablation rates for metals and dielectrics, combining the laser and target parameters, are derived and compared to experimental data. The calculated dependence of the ablation thresholds on the pulse duration is in agreement with the experimental data in a femtosecond range, and it is linked to the dependence for nanosecond pulses.

Abstract:Laser-assisted machining (LAM) is a hybrid cutting process in which a laser beam is used to heat and soften the workpiece locally in front of the cutting tool edge. The rapid temperature rise at the shear zone reduces the yield strength and work hardening of the workpiece, which makes the plastic deformation of difficult-to-machine materials easier during machining. LAM provides a reduction in the cutting forces/specific cutting energy, longer tool life, better surface integrity, and high productivity over traditional cutting. This paper presents the technical characteristics, material removal mechanism and the application of machining hard-to-machine material in LAM. The latest development of LAM and future scope are summarized in this paper.
