Abstract:To develop tungsten-free cermets, a novel MoCoB-Co cermet composed of MoCoB as a hard phase and Co as a binder phase was synthesized by the reaction sintering of Mo, Co, and B powders. The microstructure evolution, phase transformation, and mechanical properties of the cermet were investigated. We demonstrated that the mixed powders experienced three solid-phase reactions, Co + B -> Co2B, 11Mo + 15Co(2)B -> Mo2CO21B6 + 9MoCoB, and 4Mo + MO2CO21B6 -> 6MoCoB +15Co, and underwent two liquid-phase reactions. Nanosized, tremella-like Co structures were formed on the surface of the particles between 1100 and 1200 degrees C. The formation of these structures may be due to the Kirkendall effect. Further, the first liquid, L-1, was formed at 1242 degrees C by a eutectic reaction between the tremella-like Co structures and MoCoB. This led to an increase in the relative density of the sample from 43% to 71.7%. At 1268 degrees C, the second liquid, L-2, was formed as a result of a eutectic reaction between Co and MoCoB that further increased the relative density of the sample to 95%. At 1300 degrees C, the cermet exhibited the highest hardness and transverse rupture strength of 83.9 HRA and 1700 MPa, respectively.

Abstract:Transition metal boride enable applications in fields of cutting tools as the hard phase, but their fabrication suffers from shortcomings in high temperature for binary and hard/soft phase balance. Here, we leveraged a WCoB-Co cermets prepared by using elemental powders of W, Co and B powders via in situ synthesis method and investigated the microstructure evolution of a composite structure of WCoB/Co. The phase evolution, microstructure evolution and mechanical properties were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). The complete sintering process consist of three solid-phase reaction stages and one liquid-phase sintering stage. The solid-phase reaction stage includes the following three reactions: B + 2Co → Co2B, 11 W +15 Co2B → 9WCoB + W2Co21B6, and 14 W + 2W2Co21B6 → 12WCoB + 23Co + Co7W6. The eutectic liquid phase, essential for the densification, forms at 1323 °C. The Rockwell hardness and density value reach 87.5HRA and 12.11 g/cm3, respectively. At 1380 °C, the traverse rupture strength (TRS) reaches the peak value of 1495 MPa. Moreover, the results show that transgranular fracture is the main fracture mode. The densification stage was completed at ~1400 °C. In particular, Co7W6 phase was discovered during the study of the evolution of WCoB-Co cermets. An increase of the B content was found to be beneficial to eliminate the Co7W6 phase that proved to be detrimental to mechanical properties.

High-Entropy Rare Earth Tetraborides

Abstract:Six high-entropy rare earth tetraborides of the tetragonal UB4-prototyped structure have been successfully synthesized for the first time. The specimens are prepared from elemental precursors via high-energy ball mill and in-situ reactive spark plasma sintering. The sintered specimens are >98% in relative densities without detectable oxide impurities (albeit the presence of minor hexaborides in some compositions). No detectable secondary phase is observed in the composition (Y$_{0.2}$Nd$_{0.2}$Sm$_{0.2}$Gd$_{0.2}$Tb$_{0.2}$)B$_{4}$, which is proven homogeneous at both microscale and nanoscale. The Vickers microhardness are determined to be ~13-15 GPa at a standard indentation load of 9.8 N. A scientifically interesting observation is represented by the anisotropic lattice distortion from the rule-of-mixture averages. This work expands the family of high-entropy ceramics via fabricating a new class of high-entropy borides with a unique tetragonal quasi-layered crystal structure.

Abstract:In this work, a novel Mo(Co,Fe)B cermet was prepared using Mo, Fe, Co and B powders and the reaction boronizing sintering route. The phase transformation, thermal behavior, densification behavior, microstructure and mechanical properties of cermets are systematically investigated. After sintering, the microstructure of cermets was composed of Mo(Co,Fe)B hard and CoFe binder phases. The formation of Mo(Co,Fe)B phase during solid-state sintering occurred by the reactions of 2Fe + B → Fe2B, 2Co + B → Co2B and 2Mo + Fe2B + Co2B → 2Mo(Co,Fe)B. During liquid-phase sintering, two liquid phases, namely L1 and L2, were sequentially generated by the reactions of CoFe + Fe2B + Co2B → L1 and CoFe + L1 + Mo(Co,Fe)B → L2, respectively. The as-obtained cermet exhibited excellent comprehensive mechanical properties with hardness of 89.5 ± 0.2 HRA, transverse rupture strength of 1927 ± 31 MPa and fracture toughness of 17.5 ± 0.4 MPa•m1/2. In summary, these findings look promising for future preparation and application of low-cost and high-performance ternary boride cermets.

Abstract:Five halogen boracites, Mn3B7O13Cl, Co3B7O13Cl, Ni3B7O13Cl, Cu3B7O13Cl, Zn3B7O13I, have been synthesized by reaction of transition metal halides and boric acid at low temperature in the flux of boric acid. X-ray powder diffraction and chemical analysis of the halogen content show that the products are indeed stoichiometric halogen boracites, indicating that the proposed synthesis procedure is a convenient and promising way to the halogen boracites.

Abstract:The structural arrangements of the ternary metal borocarbides MB2C4 (M=Mg, Ca; La and Ce) are investigated using density-functional theory (DFT) calculations within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). Results indicate that these compounds adopt a layered structure consisting of graphite-like B2C4 layers alternating with metal sheets. Within the hexagonal layers, the coloring with the –C–C–C–B–C–B– sequence is energetically more stable than that with the –C–C–C–C–B–B– one. The electronic structures of these compounds, mainly determined by the B2C4 sheets, can be rationalized with the simple valence electron distribution M2+[B2C4]2−xe−, with the metals essentially acting as two-electron donors with respect to the boron–carbon network, the other x electrons remaining in the relatively narrow d and/or f bands of the metals. Accordingly, MB2C4 are narrow band-gap semiconductors (ΔE≈0.2–0.4eV) with M=Mg and Ca. On the other hand, with M=La and Ce, the compounds are conducting with a relatively high density of states at the Fermi level predominantly metal in character with substantial B/Cπ* antibonding state admixture.

Abstract:For the first time, a group of CaB6-typed cubic rare earth high-entropy hexaborides have been successfully fabricated into dense bulk pellets (>98.5% in relative densities). The specimens are prepared from elemental precursors via in-situ metal-boron reactive spark plasma sintering. The sintered bulk pellets are determined to be single-phase without any detectable oxides or other secondary phases. The homogenous elemental distributions have been confirmed at both microscale and nanoscale. The Vickers microhardness are measured to be 16-18 GPa at a standard indentation load of 9.8 N. The nanoindentation hardness and Young's moduli have been measured to be 19-22 GPa and 190-250 GPa, respectively, by nanoindentation test using a maximum load of 500 mN. The material work functions are determined to be 3.7-4.0 eV by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy characterizations, which are significantly higher than that of LaB6.

Abstract:High entropy monoborides powders are mainly prepared from metal and boron powders which can be costly. In this study, a novel approach starting from mixed oxides, boron carbide, and graphite was first developed to synthesize quaternary monoboride powders by combining multiple boro/carbothermal reductions (MBCTR). As an exemplar, (Mo0.25W0.25Cr0.25Ta0.25)B powders with purity up to 94.3 wt.% were successfully synthesized by heating the mixtures in vacuum at 1650°C for three times, as‐synthesized powders exhibit fine particle size (<1 μm) and uniform elemental distribution. MBCTR not only increased the purity of monoborides but resulted in abundant twins and stacking faults in the final powders. This work has proposed a new and low‐cost strategy of synthesizing high‐purity and fine monoboride powders.

Abstract:ErB4 and NdB4 nanostructured powders are produced by mechanochemical synthesis. 5 h mechanical alloying and 4 M HCl acid leaching are used in the production. ErB4 and NdB4 powders exhibit maximum magnetization of 0.4726 emu g−1 accompanied with an antiferromagnetic‐to‐paramagnetic phase transition at about TN = 18 K and 0.132 emu g−1 with a maximum at about TN = 8.53 K, respectively. Rare‐earth borides have become very popular in recent decades with high mechanical strength, melting point, good corrosion, wear, and magnetic behavior. However, the production of these borides is very challenging and unique. The production of ErB4 and NdB4 nanopowders via mechanochemical synthesis (MCS) is reported in this study first time in the literature. Er2O3 or Nd2O3, B2O3, and Mg initial powders are mechanically alloyed for different milling times to optimize the process. Rare‐earth borides with MgO phases are synthesized, then MgO is removed with HCl acid. The nanostructured rare‐earth tetraboride powders are analyzed using X‐ray diffraction (XRD). Based on the XRD, ErB4 powders are produced successfully at the end of the 5 h milling. However, the NdB4 phase does not occur as the stoichiometric ratio, so the B2O3 amount is decreased to nearly 35 wt%. When the amount of B2O3 is decreased to 20 wt%, NdB4 and NdB6 phases are 50:50 according to the Rietveld analysis. However, a homogenous NdB4 phase is obtained with 30 wt% loss of B2O3. The average particle sizes of ErB4 and NdB4 powders are nearly 100.4 and 85.6 nm, respectively. The rare‐earth tetraborides exhibit antiferromagnetic‐to‐paramagnetic‐like phase transitions at 18 and 8.53 K, respectively.

Abstract:Boron forms compounds with nearly all metals, with notable exception of copper and other group IB and IIB elements. Here, we report an unexpected discovery of ordered copper boride grown epitaxially on Cu(111) under ultrahigh vacuum. Scanning tunneling microscopy experiments combined with ab initio evolutionary structure prediction reveal a remarkably complex structure of 2D-Cu8B14. Strong intra-layer p-d hybridization and a large amount of charge transfer between Cu and B atoms are the key factors for the emergence of copper boride. This makes the discovered material unique and opens up the possibility of synthesizing ordered low-dimensional structures in similar immiscible systems.

Abstract:Metalloborophene, characterized by the presence of metal-centered boron wheels denoted as M\c{opyright}Bn, has garnered considerable attention in recent years due to its versatile properties and potential applications in fields such as electronics, spintronics, and catalysis. However, the experimental verification of metalloborophene has been challenging, mainly due to the unconventional two-dimensional (2D) boron networks. In this study, we employ scanning tunneling microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, low energy electron diffraction, and first-principles calculations to unveil Cu\c{opyright}B8 metalloborophene nanoribbons formed via spontaneous alloying after the deposition of boron on a heated Cu(110) substrate under ultrahigh vacuum condition. The thermodynamically preferred precursor, the anchoring of boron network to metal atoms, and anisotropic lattice mismatch are identified as pivotal factors in the formation of these metalloborophene nanoribbons. This discovery expands the repertoire of 2D materials and offers a potential pathway for the synthesis of other metalloborophenes.

Synthesis and Thermal Oxidation Resistance of Boron-Rich Boron-Carbide Material

Abstract:A boron-rich boron-carbide material (B4+δC) was synthesized by spark plasma sintering of a ball-milled mixture of high-purity boron powder and graphitic carbon at a pressure of 7 MPa and a temperature of 1930 °C. This high-pressure, high-temperature synthesized material was recovered and characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Vickers hardness measurements, and thermal oxidation studies. The X-ray diffraction studies revealed a single-phase rhombohedral structure (space group R-3m) with lattice parameters in hexagonal representation as a = 5.609 ± 0.007 Å and c = 12.082 ± 0.02 Å. The experimental lattice parameters result in a value of δ = 0.55, or the composition of the synthesized compound as B4.55C. The high-resolution scans of boron binding energy reveal the existence of a B-C bond at 188.5 eV. Raman spectroscopy reveals the existence of a 386 cm-1 vibrational mode representative of C-B-B linear chain formation due to excess boron in the lattice. The measured Vickers microhardness at a load of 200 gf shows a high hardness value of 33.8 ± 2.3 GPa. Thermal gravimetric studies on B4.55C were conducted at a temperature of 1300 °C in a compressed dry air environment, and its behavior is compared to other high-temperature ceramic materials such as high-entropy transition metal boride. The high neutron absorption cross section, high melting point, high mechanical strength, and thermal oxidation resistance make this material ideal for applications in extreme environments.
Order-disorder structural transition of Nd2(Zr1-Ce )2O7 pyrochlores prepared by auto-combustion method

Abstract:A series of pyrochlore solid solutions with general formula Nd2(Zr1-x Ce x )2O7 were successfully synthesized by the glycine-nitrate process (GNP) auto-combustion method and then sintered at high temperature. The order-disorder structure of the as-prepared ceramic samples was systematically characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. Rietveld refinements of the typical XRD patterns were performed using Full-prof software. XRD and Raman results confirmed a co-existence structure composed of ordered pyrochlore and disordered defect-fluorite structure for Nd2(Zr0.75Ce0.25)2O7 and Nd2(Zr0.7Ce0.3)2O7 samples. And Nd2Ce2O7 specimen presented as defect-fluorite structure with rare earth C-type microdomains in both XRD and Raman spectroscopy. The effect of 48f oxygen on phase transition was verified by XRD and Raman spectroscopy. The refined x-parameter of 48f oxygen reflected the phase transition of Nd2(Zr1-x Ce x )2O7 solutions from pyrochlore to fluorite structure. High resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) images and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) analysis of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) proved the representative Nd2(Zr0.7Ce0.3)2O7 sample showed biphasic structure with pyrochlore and defect-fluorite structure SAED rings. Also, the C-type microdomain SAED rings of Nd2Ce2O7 structure was found by TEM analysis.

Abstract:Boron carbide nanobelts have been synthesized successfully by carbothermal growth method. Boron oxide, activated carbon, gallium oxide and sodium chloride in the molar ratios of 1: 5: 0.03: 0.2 were used as raw materials. The width and thickness of the nanobelts range from 1 to 10 μm, and 80 to 150 nm respectively. The length is up to 50–200 μm. Diffraction peaks in the XRD pattern can be indexed to rhombohedral boron carbide with lattice parameters of a=5.616Å, c=12.067 Å. SAED pattern recorded along [ 010 ] zone axis shows (104 ) growth direction. A vapor–liquid–solid (VLS) growth process on the active catalyst surface is supposed to interpret the growth mechanism of as–synthesized nanobelts.

Abstract:The predecessor bulk is made from the elementary crude material such as cobalt nitrate,EDTA and so on,with the method of hydro-thermal synthesis.Then the predecessor is formed into the compound oxide of cobalt and cesium after incineration at high temperature.The physical property and structure of the predecessor bulk and product can be detected by some methods,for example TG-DTA,XRD,SEM and so on.The result indicates that the predecessor bulk has the ability of resistance to agglomeration in the condition of the experiment.At the high temperature,the peak of XRD diffraction maximum moves towards a small angle.So the cobalt element is doped into the crystal lattice of CeO2,and nanometer compound oxide of cobalt and cesium is formed.It is a good soft magnetic material.

Abstract:In this paper, the structure evolution of cerium cobaltohexanoate (Ce[Co(CN)6], Ce-Co Prussian blue analog (PBA)) has been realized by solvent catalysis at room temperature. The hexagonal bipyramidal microcrystals of Ce-Co PBA can be gradually transformed into dendrites by different proportions of ethanol (EtOH) and water. At the same time, the porous dendrites CeO2/Co@carbon nanotub (CNT) with oxygen-rich vacancies (OVs) can be obtained by annealing Ce-Co PBA at 700 °C. The microstructure study shows that carbon nanotubes will be catalyzed after annealing at high temperature, and the cobalt metal particles encapsulated in carbon nanotubes will be anchored in the matrix, regulating the impedance matching and multi-polarization suppression of the material, and its unique structure, vacancies, and strong interface effect make the material exhibit excellent electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption performance. When the matching thickness is 2.5 mm, the minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of the composite is −51.68 dB, and the effective absorption bandwidth (RL < −10 dB) is 7.76 GHz. These results show that the prepared CeO2/Co@CNT composite has excellent EMW absorption properties. It is expected to be a candidate material for EMW absorption.

Abstract:Generating high surface area mesoporous transition metal boride is interesting because the incorporation of boron atoms generates lattice distortions that lead to the formation of amorphous metal boride with unique properties in catalysis. Here we report the first synthesis of mesoporous cobalt boron amorphous alloy colloidal particles using a soft template-directed assembly approach. Dual reducing agents are used to precisely control the chemical reduction process of mesoporous cobalt boron nanospheres. The Earth-abundance of cobalt boride combined with the high surface area and mesoporous nanoarchitecture enables solar-energy efficient photothermal conversion of CO2 into CO compared to non-porous cobalt boron alloys and commercial cobalt catalysts.

In this paper, chemical co-precipitation, combined with hydrogen reduction, was adopted. CoCl2·6H2O and CeCl3 were used as precursors to coat Co nanoparticles on the surface of WC powder while introducing different contents of cerium; the samples were then sintered and densified to obtain WC-Co(Ce) hard alloy materials. On the surface of the obtained WC particles, the distribution of Co(Ce) nanoparticles was uniform and dense, and the average particle size after sintering was 4.2 μm, which lies in the coarse-grained range. The addition of cerium elements significantly improves the flexural strength and impact toughness; when the cerium content was 0.5% and 0.6%, they increased to 2487 MPa and 36.1 kJ/m2, respectively. The addition of Co(Ce) through the co-precipitation method could achieve a uniform coating of the Co phase, along with the uniform dispersion and densification of the sintered phase, giving the WC-Co(Ce) cemented carbide excellent properties.

Abstract:Single crystals of (Nd1-xCex)2Fe14B are grown out of Fe-(Nd,Ce) flux. Chemical and structural analysis of the crystals indicates that (Nd1-xCex)2Fe14B forms a solid solution until at least x = 0.38 with a Vegard-like variation of the lattice constants with x. Refinements of single crystal neutron diffraction data indicate that Ce has a slight site preference (7:3) for the 4g rare earth site over the 4f site. Magnetization measurements show that for x = 0.38 the saturation magnetization at 400 K, a temperature important to applications, falls from 29.8 for the parent Nd2Fe14B to 27.6 (mu)B/f.u., the anisotropy field decreases from 5.5 T to 4.7 T, and the Curie temperature decreases from 586 to 543 K. First principles calculations carried out within density functional theory are used to explain the decrease in magnetic properties due to Ce substitution. Though the presence of the lower-cost and more abundant Ce slightly affects these important magnetic characteristics, this decrease is not large enough to affect a multitude of applications. Ce-substituted Nd2Fe14B is therefore a potential high-performance permanent magnet material with substantially reduced Nd content.
