Abstract:Coordination-driven assembly has been widely successful in the synthesis of metallocages and used for many applications, such as catalysis. However, studies on CO2 adsorption with metallocages have been rarely conducted, compared to other well-known cage-type materials, such as porous organic cages. In this study, a rational choice of ligand and metal led to the synthesis of a Zr6L3-type metallocage, exhibiting exceptional CO2 adsorption properties. CO2 adsorption experiments revealed that the metallocage shows highly selective adsorption of CO2 over N2 with high CO2 binding energy. Density functional theory calculations uncovered the origin of this exceptional affinity for CO2 over N2.
Controllable Preparation of Hierarchical ZnO Nanocages and Its Oxygen Vacancy Through the Nanoscale Kirkendall Process

Abstract:The synthesis of ZnO with tailorable shapes and point defects is important for its potential applications. Here, a facile approach is demonstrated to prepare ZnO nanocages with controllable porous shell structures though sintering a Zn‐based cyanide‐bridged coordination polymer under different temperatures. The transformation of ZnCP microspheres into ZnO nanocages is based on two types of nanoscale Kirkendall effect, which are related to low temperature solid–solid interfacial oxidation and high temperature solid–gas interfacial reaction, respectively. At low temperature (around 300 °C) and before the ZnCP decomposition, the novel “hierarchical ZnO bigger nanocages embedded with smaller nanocages with 10 nm nanocrystals” can be generated. By contrast, when coming to the total decomposition of ZnCP at 800 °C, ZnO nanocages with significantly increased sizes and large cavities are generated, and large amounts of oxygen vacancies (VO) are created at the same time, leading to the dramatic increased luminescence intensities of the UV peak due to VO at 540 nm. Thus, the luminescence intensities versus defect concentration in the prepared ZnO nanocages can also be controlled by tuning the sintering temperatures.

Abstract:Single-crystalline and uniform nanopolyhedra, nanorods, and nanocubes of cubic CeO2 were selectively prepared by a hydrothermal method at temperatures in the range of 100-180 degrees C under different NaOH concentrations, using Ce(NO3)3 as the cerium source. According to high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, they have different exposed crystal planes: {111} and {100} for polyhedra, {110} and {100} for rods, and {100} for cubes. During the synthesis, the formation of hexagonal Ce(OH)3 intermediate species and their transformation into CeO2 at elevated temperature, together with the base concentration, have been demonstrated as the key factors responsible for the shape evolution. Oxygen storage capacity (OSC) measurements at 400 degrees C revealed that the oxygen storage takes place both at the surface and in the bulk for the as-obtained CeO2 nanorods and nanocubes, but is restricted at the surface for the nanopolyhedra just like the bulk one, because the {100}/{110}-dominated surface structures are more reactive for CO oxidation than the {111}-dominated one. This result suggests that high OSC materials might be designed and obtained by shape-selective synthetic strategy.

Abstract:Unique single-crystalline octahedral Cu2O nanocages (see Figure) are synthesized in solution by the catalytic reduction of copper tartrate complex into octahedral Cu2O nanocrystals and a subsequent spontaneous hollowing process. A wealth of colorful nanostructures with widely tunable bandgaps in the range 2.6-2.2 eV are obtained. The obtained nanocages may find potential use in solar-energy conversion, catalysis, and as model systems for fundamental research.

Abstract:Uniform Ce1−xZrxO2 (x=0.2–0.8) nanocrystals with ultra-small size were synthesized through a thermolysis process, facilitated by the initial formation of precursor (hydrated (Ce,Zr)-hydroxides) at low temperature. TEM, XRD, EDAX, and Raman spectra were employed to study the formation of the solid solutions with various Ce/Zr ratios. Ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectra showed that the ratios of Ce3+ to Ce4+ in both surface and bulk for the as-prepared Ce1−xZrxO2 nanocrystals increased with the zirconium content x. The well-distributed Zr and Ce in the hydrated (Ce,Zr)-hydroxides before their thermolysis became the crucial factor for the structural homogeneity of the products. In addition, this strategy was extended to the synthesis of Ce1−xGdxO1−x/2, Ce1−xSmxO1−x/2, and Ce1−xSnxO2 solid solutions. Catalytic measurements indicated that the ceria-based catalysts were active for CO oxidation at temperatures beyond 250°C and the sequence of catalytic activity was Ce0.5Zr0.5O2>Ce0.8Zr0.2O2>Ce0.2Zr0.8O2>Ce0.5Sm0.5O1.75.

Abstract:Dissipative structures often appear as an unstable counterpart of ordered structures owing to fluctuations that do not form a homogeneous phase. Even a multiphase mixture may simultaneously undergo one chemical reaction near equilibrium and another one that is far from equilibrium. Here, we observed in real time crystal seed formation and simultaneous nanocrystal aggregation proceeding from Ce IV complexes to CeO 2 nanoparticles in an acidic aqueous solution, and investigated the resultant hierarchical nanoarchitecture. The formed particles exhibited two very different size ranges, resulting in further pattern formation with opalescence. The hierarchically assembled structures in solutions were CeO 2 colloids, viz. primary core clusters (1–3 nm) of crystalline ceria and secondary clusters (20–30 nm) assembled through surface ions. Such self-assembly is widespread in multi-component complex fluids, paradoxically moderating hierarchical reactions. Stability and instability are not only critical but also complementary for co-optimisation around the nearby free energy landscape prior to bifurcation.

Abstract:A layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly approach has been developed to synthesize ZnO nanorod-based hybrid nanomaterials such as ZnO/CeO2, ZnO/CdS, and ZnO/Ag on ZnO nanorod templates at room temperature. The morphology, structure, and composition of the ZnO nanorod-based hybrid nanomaterials have been characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. It is indicated that a uniform coating layer consisting of homogeneous nanoparticles is deposited on the surface of ZnO nanorods due to the strong electrostatic attraction between metal ions and polyelectrolyte modified ZnO nanorods. The general approach presented here can be extended to the synthesize other one-dimensional (1D) nanostructure-based hybrid nanomaterials.

Abstract:The combination of ceria (CeO2 ) with different oxides (MO2 ) has been used as a material design strategy to improve its outstanding properties. Furthermore, the formation of mixed oxide nanoparticles (NPs) opens the opportunity to explore new effects. However, our understanding at the atom level of the dependence of the physical-chemical and thermodynamic properties as a function of the NP size and chemical composition is still far from satisfactory. Here, we used force-field molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the effects of composition ( x ) and NP size on the physical-chemical properties of Ce1 – x Zrx O2 NPs with diameter from 1 (32 cations) up to 3 nm (256 cations), where x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0. We found abrupt changes in the potential energy versus temperature of NPs with more than 108 cations, indicating the structural phase transition from disordered to ordered NPs, which was confirmed by the radial distribution function. We found a linear relationship, considering that the size and composition of NPs can be used to estimate the phase transition temperature ( Tpt ): the increase in the molar fraction of Zr and the reduction in particle size are related to lower T pt and less defined decays of energy with temperature. NPs larger than 56 cations show a radial distribution function with several peaks, which is related to the ordering in these structures. These peaks gradually disappear as the size decreases and the fraction of Zr increases. Similar trends were observed with X-ray diffraction analysis; e.g., fluorite-like motifs occur even with 56 cations in the case of ceria, but only for 108 cations for zirconia. Common neighbor analysis confirmed that NPs with well-defined values Tpt have face-centered cubic (fcc) like domains in the NP core region. The number of ordered fcc cations increases with increasing NP size and decreases with Zr4+ concentration. Finally, we observed that ceria nucleate first during simulated annealing and occupy highly coordinated sites located near the core regions, while Zr prefer the lowest coordinated sites on the surface.

Abstract:Ceria nanorods enclosed with {110}/{100} planes and ceria nanocubes with {100} planes have been successfully prepared using a homemade microfluidic system in a continuous, ultrafast and shape-controllable manner. Only 8 min of reaction time are needed rather than days to synthesize ceria nanostructures in the traditional batch hydrothermal method. During the synthesis, reaction temperatures and base concentration have been demonstrated as the key factors responsible for the shape evolution. Accordingly, a morphological phase diagram was determined. In addition, polyvinylpyrrolidone was introduced to realize the transformation from ceria nanorods to nanocubes under unfavorable hydrothermal conditions. Catalytic performance of different CeO2 architectures was also examined in decomposing hydrogen peroxide and a reactivity trend (nanoparticles < nanorods < nonocubes) was observed. This is assumed to be related with different surface oxygen vacancy amounts as a result of {110}/{100} preferential planes, as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman analyses as well as density functional theory (DFT+U) calculations.

Abstract:Because of their excellent properties and extensive applications, ceria nanomaterials have attracted much attention in recent years. This perspective provides a comprehensive review of current research activities that focus on the shape-controlled synthesis methods of ceria nanostructures. We elaborate on the synthesis strategies in the following four sections: (i) oriented growth directed by the crystallographic structure of cerium-based materials; (ii) oriented growth directed by the use of an appropriate capping reagent; (iii) growth confined or dictated by various templates; (iv) other potential methods for generating CeO2 nanomaterials. In this perspective, we also discuss the catalytic applications of ceria nanostructures. They are often used as active components or supports in many catalytic reactions and their catalytic activities show morphology dependence. We review the morphology dependence of their catalytic performances in carbon monoxide oxidation, water-gas shift, nitric oxide reduction, and reforming reactions. At the end of this review, we give a personal perspective on the probable challenges and developments of the controllable synthesis of CeO2 nanomaterials and their catalytic applications.
Sustainable and Facile Route to Nearly Monodisperse Spherical Aggregates of CeO2 Nanocrystals with Ionic Liquids and Their Catalytic Activities for CO Oxidation

Abstract:This article reports a novel preparation of nearly monodisperse spherical aggregates of CeO2 nanocrystals by using ionic liquid (1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide, C(16)MimBr) as both template and solvent. The products were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, and N-2 adsorption-desorption methods. The spherical aggregates, with average diameter of 100 - 150 nm, are composed of ca. 3.5 nm CeO2 nanocrystals as building units, giving rise to three-dimensional (313) open porous structures with high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of 119 m(2).g(-1). Mesoporous CeO2 with surface area up to 227 m(2).g(-1) was prepared by simply tuning the amount of the ionic liquids. Loaded with 5 wt% CuO, both the spherical aggregates and the mesoporous CeO2 exhibit high catalytic activities for CO conversion with 100% conversion rates at low temperature of 150 degrees C, suggesting potential applications in preferential oxidation (PROX) and water-gas shift reaction (WGSR). This sustainable and facile method may be extended to the preparation of other metal oxide nanoarchitectures and provides guidance for structure-controlled synthesis.
Dimension-Manipulated Ceria Nanostructures (0d Uniform Nanocrystals, 2d Polycrystalline Assembly, and 3d Mesoporous Framework) from Cerium Octylate Precursor in Solution Phases and Their Co Oxidation Activities

Abstract:Dimension-tunable ceria nanostructures including 0D uniform nanocrystals, 2D polycrystalline assembly, and 3D mesoporous framework were selectively synthesized from the same cerium precursor of Ce(OC8H17)(4) with the designed solution methods. The thermolysis of Ce(OC8H17)(4) in tri-n-octylphosphine oxide and dioctyl ether at 250 degrees C yielded uniform ceria nanopolyhedra and elongated nanocrystals (around 2.2 nm in size). Through the polyol alcoholysis in ethylene glycol at 195 degrees C, polycrystalline assembled nanostructures (PANS) composed of small ceria crystallites (around 3-4 nm) were achieved, showing adjustable cross-linkages in the 2D dendritic structure. The raise of Ce(OC8H17)(4) concentration and reaction time would increase the cross-linkages of the PANs. By a conventional sol-gel route, mesoporous ceria gels in an ordered 2D hexagonal mesostructure were synthesized at 40 degrees C through controlling the hydrolysis rate, and the condensation and aggregation of the metal precursor, as well as the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of the block-copolymer surfactants as used (e.g., EO20-PO70-EO20, P123). Catalytic measurements indicated that three CeO2 catalysts prepared from the above different nanostructures were active for CO oxidation at temperatures beyond 250 degrees C and showed T-50 (50% conversion of CO) at 310 degrees C for the PAN catalysts, 340 degrees C for the nanopolyhedra catalyst, and 390 degrees C for the mesoporous catalyst.
Formation of a Highly Reactive Cobalt Nanocluster Crystal Within a Highly Negatively Charged Porous Coordination Cage.

Abstract:Earth-abundant first-row transition-metal nanoclusters (NCs) have been extensively investigated as catalysts. However, their catalytic activity is relatively low compared with noble metal NCs. Enhanced catalytic activity of cobalt NCs can be achieved by encapsulating Co NCs in soluble porous coordination cages (PCCs). Two cages, PCC-2a and 2b, possess almost identical cavity in shape and size, while PCC-2a has five times more net charges than PCC-2b. Co2+ cations were accumulated in PCC-2a and reduced to ultra-small Co NCs in situ, while for PCC-2b, only bulky Co particles were formed. As a result, Co NCs@PCC-2a accomplished the highest catalytic activity in the hydrolysis of ammonium borane among all the first-row transition-metals NCs. Based on these results, it is envisioned that confining in the charged porous coordination cage could be a novel route for the synthesis of ultra-small NCs with extraordinary properties.

Abstract:Solid-state reactions have the potential for direct preparation of ceramic powders and offer a low-temperature and low-cost alternative to conventional techniques for production of oxide powders. This paper describes a simple and effective mechanochemical method based on solid-state reactions during ball milling for synthesis of nanoscaled ceria (CeO2) particles. By using an organic base instead of an inorganic base, metal-ion-free nanoscaled CeO2 can also be made. The effects of annealing temperature on particle sizes and lattice strain are investigated. The results show that the average particle sizes of the particles increases and the average crystal lattice distortion decreases with the annealing temperature. Transmission electron microscopy examinations demonstrate that the CeO2 particles synthesised by this method are near-spherical shaped.

Abstract:Well-crystalline CeO(2-x) nanotubes are synthesized via a mild hydrothermal reaction route using cerium nitrate and ammonium hydroxide as reactants. The CeO(2-x) nanotubes have the same structure as the bulk CeO2 but larger lattice parameter. The measurement of the ratio of M5/M4 edge shows the valence reduction of cerium ions for the CeO(2-x) nanotubes.

Spontaneous Organization of Uniform CeO2 Nanoflowers by 3D Oriented Attachment in Hot Surfactant Solutions Monitored with an in Situ Electrical Conductance Technique

Abstract:Uniform CeO(2) nanoflowers were synthesized by rapid thermolysis of (NH(4))(2)Ce(NO(3))(6) in oleic acid (OA)/oleylamine (OM), by a unique 3D oriented-attachment mechanism. CeO(2) nanoflowers with controlled shape (cubic, four-petaled, and starlike) and tunable size (10-40 nm) were obtained by adjusting the reaction conditions including solvent composition, precursor concentration, reaction temperature, and reaction time. The nanoflower growth mechanism was investigated by in situ electrical conductance measurements, transmission electron microscopy, and UV/Vis spectroscopy. The CeO(2) nanoflowers are likely formed in two major steps, that is, initial formation of ceria cluster particles capped with various ligands (e.g., OA, OM, and NO(3) (-)) via hydrolysis of (NH(4))(2)Ce(NO(3))(6) at temperatures in the range 140-220 degrees C, and subsequent spontaneous organization of the primary particles into nanoflowers by 3D oriented attachment, due to a rapid decrease in surface ligand coverage caused by sudden decomposition of the precursor at temperatures above 220 degrees C in a strong redox reaction. After calcination at 400 degrees C for 4 h the 33.8 nm CeO(2) nanoflowers have a specific surface area as large as 156 m(2) g(-1) with high porosity, and they are highly active for conversion of CO to CO(2) in the low temperature range of 200-400 degrees C. The present approach has also been extended to the preparation of other transition metal oxide (CoO, NiO, and CuO(x)) nanoflowers.

Abstract:In this paper, a new class of NH(4)Ln(2)F(7) (Ln = Y, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu) inorganic nanocages that has been discovered will be presented. A facile template-free synthetic route was developed for one step, high yield, and large scale synthesis of ternary NH4Ln2F7 (Ln = Y, Ho, Er, Tin, Yb, Lu) nanocages, On the basis of our studies, these nanocages are thermodynamically stable forms of this group of NH4Ln2F7 compounds. The tendency of NH(4)Ln(2)F(7) (Ln = Y, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu) to form these new-type nanostructures is believed to have a close relationship with their inherent layered structures, similar to that of inorganic fullerene-like nanoparticles. This new type of nanocage can be easily doped with other lanthanide ions, which may endow these nanocages with novel properties.

Abstract:Mastery of nanomaterial structure enables the control of its properties to enhance its performance for a given application. Herein, we demonstrate a fast and facile self-assembly method for the synthesis of a series of Co3 O4 @CeO2 core@shell cubes, which are characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. The results indicate that the thickness of the CeO2 shell can be tuned through simple variation of the feeding molar ratio of Ce/Co. These Co3 O4 @CeO2 core@shell cubes are used for catalytic CO oxidation and show good catalytic properties. Moreover, the relationship between the catalytic performance and the CeO2 shell thickness is studied in depth to optimize the catalytic properties.
