Abstract:The author reports a unique early-stage (the crystallized volume fraction ∼0.20) self-organized nanocrystalline stripe pattern phenomenon that nanoscale phase separation and nucleation simultaneously work together, representing a type that had never been previously observed in a metastable alloy solid. The first observation of mesoscopic self-organized crystallization showed that self-organization is not limited to the case of organic matter, thus potentially offering an insight into the mechanism of the nonequilibrium (nano)crystallization of metallic glasses.

Abstract:Amorphous ribbons Fe73.5-xCoxSi13.5B9Cu1Nb3(x=10,30,50) were prepared by the standard single copper wheel melt spinning technique in the air atmosphere.The isothermal annealing was carried out at 550 and 600℃ for 1h in a vacuum furnace to induce the formation of nanocrystallite in amorphous ribbons.The X-ray diffraction(XRD) analyses showed that the average sizes D of α-Fe(Co,Si) grains for the samples annealed at 550℃ were 19.3,20.1,22.8 nm and those for the samples annealed at 600℃ were 24.8,25.2,26.5nm,respectively.The primary crystallization activation energies of amorphous ribbons were calculated using Kissinger,Ozawa and Augis-Bennett models based on differential thermal analysis data.The local Avrami exponenet n for primary crystallization was calculated using Johnson-Mehl-Avrami(JMA) equation.The significant variation of local Avrami exponent n with crystallized volume fraction α demonstrated that the primary crystallization kinetics of amorphous ribbons varied at different stages.In the initial stage(0α0.2),the crystallization mechanism was bulk crystallization with three dimensional nucleation and grain growth controlled by diffusion at decreasing nucleation rate.In the following stage(0.2α1.0),it was surface crystallization with one dimensional nucleation and grain growth at a near-zero nucleation rate.

Abstract:Transmission electron microscopy is used to resolve the crystallization of the bulk amorphous alloy (Fe40Ni40P14B6)96Ga4. Nanocrystallization is observed in supercooled liquid region for bulk amorphous alloy (Fe40Ni40P14B6)96Ga4. The annealing temperature varies from 680K to 730K where supercooled liquid region exists. The annealing time is 60min for all samples. Crystallization does not occur until the annealing temperature exceeds 680K. Crystal unions consisting of nanocrystals start to precipitate in amorphous base when the annealing temperature arrives at 690K. The average diameter of crystal unions is about 150–250nm. Crystal unions already knock together when the annealing temperature comes to 700K. When the annealing temperature reaches 710K, another microstructure is formed, consisting of the uniform nanocrystals with a grain size of about 8nm. When the annealing temperature is increased to 730K, the nanocrystals grow up into the bacilliform crystals with the average diameter of about 30nm.

Abstract:Unlike crystalline metals, which have a well-understood periodical structure, the amorphous structure of metallic glasses (MGs) is still poorly understood, particularly when such a structure rearranges itself at the nanoscale under external agitations. In this article, we provide compelling evidence obtained from a recently developed high-resolution atomic force microscopy (HRAFM) technique that reveals the nanoscale structural heterogeneity after thermal annealing in a Zr–Ni metallic glass. Through the HRAFM technique, we are able to uncover the annealing-induced fractal growth of the dense-packing phases in the binary MG thin film, which exhibits a fractal dimension of ∼1.7, in line with a two-dimensional diffusion limited aggregation process. The current findings not only reveal the evolution process of atomic packing in the annealed MG thin film, but also shed light on the possible cooling rate effect on the atomic structure of MGs.

Abstract:Primary crystallization in high Al-content metallic glasses is driven by nanometer-diameter regions with internal structure similar to fcc Al. Comparison of fluctuation electron microscopy (FEM) data to FEM simulations of fcc Al clusters dispersed in a dense-random packed matrix is used to extract the diameter and volume fraction of the ordered regions in a Al88Y7Fe5 base glass and in glasses with 1 at.% Cu substituted for Y or Al. The size and density of nanocrystals were measured as a function of isothermal annealing time for the same alloys. The volume fraction of crystalline material grows under isothermal annealing, so the phase transformation is not purely grain coarsening, but the crystalline volume fraction is lower than the volume fraction of ordered regions in the as-quenched samples, so not all of the ordered regions act as nuclei. Changes in diameter and volume fraction of the ordered regions with alloying are correlated with changes in the crystallization temperature, nucleation rate, and nanocrystal density. No evidence for phase separation is observed, and FEM simulations from a molecular dynamics quenched structural model of similar composition do not show the features observed in experiment.

Abstract:Iron-based amorphous alloys have attracted significant attention from both technological and scientific communities owing to their soft magnetic property. A recent discovery indicates that amorphous alloys have a transition to the nanocrystalline state after annealing, which exhibiting excellent magnetic properties. To explore how the annealing temperature and alloy composition affect the formation of nanocrystals in the Fe-based amorphous alloys, this study employs molecular dynamics simulations. The first step involves creating amorphous models with varying alloy compositions. Subsequently, annealing processes are simulated for amorphous alloys of two different compositions across a range of temperature conditions. Finally, various characterization techniques, including radial distribution function, Honeycutt-Andersen (HA) bonding index, and Voronoi polyhedral index, are used to analyze the resulting amorphous structures. The results show that the Fe78Si15B7 amorphous alloy has a higher tendency to adopt the standard icosahedral structure compared to the Fe74Cu1Nb3Si15B7 amorphous alloy. Moreover, the percentage of icosahedral formation during annealing exhibit a nonlinear relationship with temperature. This suggests that the Fe78Si15B7 amorphous alloy is more predisposed to forming nanocrystals. Additionally, the proportions of both icosahedral and standard icosahedral structures within the amorphous material increase as annealing time is extended.

Beating Homogeneous Nucleation and Tuning Atomic Ordering in Glass-Forming Metals by Nanocalorimetry

Abstract:In this paper, the amorphous Ce68Al10Cu20Co2 (atom %) alloy was in situ prepared by nanocalorimetry. The high cooling and heating rates accessible with this technique facilitate the suppression of crystallization on cooling and the identification of homogeneous nucleation. Different from the generally accepted notion that metallic glasses form just by avoiding crystallization, the role of nucleation and growth in the crystallization behavior of amorphous alloys is specified, allowing an access to the ideal metallic glass free of nuclei. Local atomic configurations are fundamentally significant to unravel the glass forming ability (GFA) and phase transitions in metallic glasses. For this reason, isothermal annealing near Tg from 0.001 s to 25,000 s following quenching becomes the strategy to tune local atomic configurations and facilitate an amorphous alloy, a mixed glassy-nanocrystalline state, and a crystalline sample successively. On the basis of the evolution of crystallization enthalpy and overall latent heat on reheating, we quantify the underlying mechanism for the isothermal nucleation and crystallization of amorphous alloys. With Johnson-Mehl-Avrami method, it is demonstrated that the coexistence of homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation contributes to the isothermal crystallization of glass. Heterogeneous rather than homogeneous nucleation dominates the isothermal crystallization of the undercooled liquid. For the mixed glassy-nanocrystalline structure, an extraordinary kinetic stability of the residual glass is validated, which is ascribed to the denser packed interface between amorphous phase and ordered nanocrystals. Tailoring the amorphous structure by nanocalorimetry permits new insights into unraveling GFA and the mechanism that correlates local atomic configurations and phase transitions in metallic glasses.

Abstract:The microscopic strain evolution and microstructural of FeCuNbSiB amorphous alloy samples were studied under both free and tensile stress annealing conditions using in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). An amorphous-nanocrystalline structure was developed in both samples after annealing at 813 K, as the microstrains increased and decreased along the parallel and perpendicular stress directions respectively. The applied stress during annealing imposed limitations on the size of nanocrystals along the tensile and perpendicular stress directions, resulting in smaller sizes compared to those obtained under free annealing conditions, due to the reduction in Gibbs free energy by the applied stress and the subsequent enhancement of nucleation rates. The nanocrystalline size perpendicular to the stress direction was slightly larger than that along the parallel stress direction because the suppression of atomic diffusion perpendicular to the stress direction during crystallization could be favorable for local atomic rearrangement.

Abstract:The NiTi metallic glass ribbon was subjected to 10-minute annealing at 400°C, 500°C and 600°C to detect changes in the surface relief and its statistical characteristics upon heating. Each annealing mode led to the ribbon crystallization with the formation of the Ni 50 Ti 50 crystalline phases along with the transformation of the surface topography. Multifractal characteristics, such as the width of the singularity spectrum and fractal dimension, were calculated for the surface relief as a function of an annealing temperature. After the annealing at 500°C, along with the stepwise surface structure rearrangements, these parameters had extrema, including a local minimum of the width of the singularity spectrum, indicating a tendency towards monofractalization of the system. Abrupt changes in the parameters calculated by applying the multifractal formalism made it possible to detect the phase transition of the system in the form of its crystallization.

Abstract:Although considerable effort has been devoted to understanding the nanocrystallization of bulk metallic glasses in deep undercooling conditions, the atomistic mechanisms underlying the detailed growth of atomic clusters existing in amorphous states into three-dimensional (3-D) nanocrystals remains unclear. We resolve this problem here via a combination of careful statistical analyses of high-resolution transmission electron microscope images of pulse-annealed bulk amorphous samples and detailed molecular dynamic simulations of crystallization in deep undercooling conditions. Our results reveal that the atomistic growth mechanism involves three distinguishable steps in succession: formation of quasi-ordered structures with 1-D periodicity, 2-D periodicity on a length scale of 2–4nm and the formation of 3-D nanocrystals with clear interfaces. These steps take place successively but in a non-uniform manner over the entire sample, and the adjustment of relative atomic position is realized without any long-range diffusion.

Abstract:Through an amorphous spinodal decomposition, dual metallic glasses are simultaneously formed in the Hf45Nb55 multilayered films upon 200keV xenon ion beam mixing at a dose of 2×1015Xe+∕cm2. Interestingly, further irradiation induced the growth of fractals in the major glass matrix and the fractals consisted of nanosized (around 20nm) polycrystals of bcc structure. The fractal dimension was determined by the image processor and found to increase from 1.70 to 1.84 within a dose range of (4–7)×1015Xe+∕cm2. The fractal growth in association with the amorphous spinodal decomposition is discussed in terms of atomic collision theory and cluster-diffusion-limited aggregation.

Abstract:We studied the crystallization behavior of metallic glass Ni50Nb10Zr15Ti15Pt7.5Cu2.5 under different ion irradiation and thermal annealing conditions. The results show that although the room temperature ion irradiation would not introduce observable structural defects in metallic glass, the excess free volume induced by ion irradiation would promote the formation of nanocrystals under thermal annealing. Meanwhile, the interstitial atoms induced by high temperature ion irradiation may act as an important role in the enhancement of atomic diffusivity and nanocrystals growth process. Our study shows that the combination of ion irradiation and thermal annealing may help to achieve controllable structural modification of metallic glass.

Abstract:We developed several Fe-based bulk metallic glasses with a unique combination of large glass-forming ability and excellent soft magnetic properties by minor doping of Cu in the Fe76C7.0Si3.3B5.0P8.7 alloy. Proper additions of the non-magnetic copper element which has a positive heat of mixing with Fe, coupled with adequate annealing, can stimulate formation of ∼5 nm αFe ferromagnetic nanocrystals, which results in the increment in the saturation magnetization. Over-annealing which induced coarsening of the α-Fe nanocrystals reduces the ferromagnetic exchange interaction between the nanosized α-Fe crystals and increases the effective magneto-crystalline anisotropy, thereby deteriorating the soft magnetic properties.

Abstract:Most metallic glasses are brittle as deformation induces low‐density sporadic shear bands and severe shear localization proceeding catastrophic failure. Here, it is demonstrated that the introduction of crystalline nanolayers with appropriate dimension can substantially suppress shear localization in metallic glasses, as manifested by ubiquitous ductile dimples in amorphous phase. Furthermore, dimple sizes can be tailored by tuning the dimension of layer thickness. Additionally unlike instantaneous crack propagation occurring in most metallic glasses, crack propagation occurs in a highly periodic and “zigzag” fashion, and shows clear size dependence for metallic glass nanolaminates. Thus, it is a promising approach to promote ductility in metallic glasses while maintaining high strength by synthesizing metallic glass nanolaminates with certain layer thickness. Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that crystalline/amorphous interfaces can block crack propagation in crystalline layers and delocalize strain in amorphous layers, and suggest that “zigzag” crack propagation could be achieved through dislocation slips in crystalline layers.

Abstract:<p>Determination and conceptualization of atomic structures of metallic glasses or amorphous alloys remain a grand challenge. Structural models proposed for bulk metallic glasses are still controversial owing to experimental difficulties in directly imaging the atom positions in three-dimensional structures. With the advanced atomic-resolution imaging, here we directly observed the atomic arrangements in atomically thin metallic glassy membranes obtained by vapor deposition. The atomic packing in the amorphous membrane is shown to have a fractal characteristic, with the fractal dimension depending on the atomic density. Locally, the atomic configuration for the metallic glass membrane is composed of many types of polygons with the bonding angles concentrated on 45°–55°. The fractal atomic structure is consistent with the analysis with percolation theory, and may account for the enhanced relaxation dynamics and the easiness of glass transition as reported for the thin metallic glassy films or glassy surface.</p>

Spherical nucleuses of Cu–Ni–Al alloy with a face-centered cubic structure are embedded to simulate nanograins in Cu–Ni–Al amorphous alloy; subsequently, the material is annealed at different temperatures. The results show that the critical radius for nucleation at temperatures above the glass transition temperature (Tg) affected the behavior, grain growth, and annihilation of nanograins in the Cu–Ni–Al amorphous alloy during annealing. When the temperature increased, the critical radius for nucleation increased as well. This causes the small nanograins to annihilate quickly and the large nanograins to develop rapidly. When the annealing temperature is higher than Tg, part of the crystal nuclei, which is smaller than the critical radius, can be eliminated. The crystallinity of the metallic glass decreased, and the minimum crystallinity is attained after a period of annealing simulation. Subsequently, as the residual effective nanograins began developing, the crystallinity of the amorphous metal increased again. Therefore, the annealing duration time is critical to the crystallinity of the amorphous alloy after annealing.
Densification and heterogeneity enhancement of Fe-based metallic glass under local plastic flow

Abstract:The atomic-scale structure and concomitant mechanical property evolution of a ribbon-shaped Fe 78 Si 9 B 13 metallic glass after local plastic flow are investigated. By using abrasive papers as a medium to transport the pressure, the equivalent pressure on the ribbon surface is sufficiently magnified. Multiple shear bands pervading along their surface are generated simultaneously after deformation. The densification processes triggered by the cooperative atomic rearrangements in the short and medium-range are revealed by analyzing the synchrotron diffraction patterns in reciprocal space and real space. Meanwhile, the local plastic flow enhances the structural heterogeneity. In contrast to the strain-softening under uniaxial loading, these structural changes contribute to the improvement of resistance to subsequent deformation. As a result, the Vickers hardness of the deformed Fe 78 Si 9 B 13 metallic glass increases compared with the undeformed sample, manifesting a local strain-hardening behavior.

Abstract:Pd77.5Cu6Si16.5metallic glass was prepared by fluxing treatment and water quenching method. To avoid possible artifacts, shear bands were created by indentation after TEM sample preparation. Bright field image, diffraction pattern, and the dark field image of TEM that covered the shear band region were presented. A few nanocrystalline phases were noticed inside the shear bands, which favored the plastic deformation ability and supported the explanation of mechanical deformation-induced crystallization.

Abstract:The thermal stability and the quantification of the different transformation processes involved in the overall crystallization of the Fe50Cr15Mo14C15B6 amorphous alloy were investigated by several characterization techniques. Formation of various metastable and stable phases during the devitrification process in the sequence α-Fe, χ-Cr6Fe18Mo5, M23(C,B)6, M7C3, η-Fe3Mo3C and FeMo2B2 (with M = Fe, Cr, Mo), was observed by in-situ synchrotron high energy X-ray diffraction and in-situ transmission electron microscopy. By combining these techniques with differential scanning calorimetry data, the crystallization states and their temperature range of stability under continuous heating were related with the evolution of the crystallized fraction and the phase sequence as a function of temperature, revealing structural and chemical details of the different transformation mechanisms.

Fast coalescence of metallic glass nanoparticles

Abstract:The coarsening of crystalline nanoparticles, driven by reduction of surface energy, is the main factor behind the degeneration of their physical and chemical properties. The kinetic phenomenon has been well described by various models, such as Ostwald ripening and coalescence. However, the coarsening mechanisms of metallic glass nanoparticles (MGNs) remains largely unknown. Here we report atomic-scale observations on the coarsening kinetics of MGNs at high temperatures by in situ heating high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The coarsening of the amorphous nanoparticles takes place by fast coalescence which is dominated by facet-free surface diffusion at a lower onset temperature. Atomic-scale observations and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations suggest that the high surface mobility and the structural isotropy of MGNs, originating from the disordered structure and unique supercooled liquid state, promote the fast coalescence of the amorphous nanoparticles at relatively lower temperatures.
