Abstract:The plasma characteristics of the extraction region in high-power RF negative ion source play a crucial role in the production and extraction of negative hydrogen ions. This study employed electrostatic probe to investigate the impact of RF power, source pressure, magnetic filter field and bias voltage on the plasma parameters of the extraction region (without cesium). Additionally, the study examined how these parameters vary with position and time. The results demonstrate that an increases in RF power leads to a significant rise in plasma density in the extraction region. However, the rise is accompanied by an increase in the electron temperature (T_e) of the extraction region, which can result in increased loss of negative hydrogen ions. Elevating the source pressure effectively increase the electron density (N_e) in the extraction region while reducing T_e aligning with expectations. Moreover, enhancing the magnetic filter field proves effective in reducing T_e in the extraction region. Nonetheless, beyond a plasma grid current of 1900 A, the impact on T_e becomes less significant. Although raising the bias voltage can suppress N_e in the extraction region, it also causes an increase in T_e. The distribution of plasma parameters in the extraction region appears relatively uniform. Furthermore, there is no significant temporal variation observed in plasma parameters. These findings not only enhance the comprehension of the physical mechanisms governing plasma behavior in the extraction region of negative ion sources but also furnish essential theoretical and experimental foundations for optimizing high-power RF negative ion sources.
