Abstract:A fundamental understanding of the structural effects of supported metal catalysts at the molecular level is extremely important for developing high-performance catalysts that are widely used in industry, which is still a longstanding attractive but challenging topic in multidisciplinary fields. In this work, we report the strong effects of local coordination structures on the catalytic activity of subnanometric PtOx clusters over CeO2 nanowires in low-temperature CO oxidation as a probe reaction. Atoms and subnanometric clusters of Pt were deposited to form the coordination structure of PtOx on the well-defined CeO2 nanowires with mainly exposed (110) facets. The reactivity of active sites and the variation of the local coordination structures of the PtOx sites were deeply investigated with in situ spectroscopic experiments, assisted by density functional theory simulations. According to our observation, although the highly dispersed Pt sites at the subnanometric scale could provide increased accessible sites, some of the Pt sites did not show high activity for CO oxidation due to the increased surrounding oxygen that seemed to overstabilize the Pt atoms. An increased proportion of both adsorbed CO intermediates on oxidized Pt sites and the interfacial lattice oxygen of PtOx clusters tended to become inactive on samples with a high coordination number of oxygen bonded to Pt sites (CN(Pt-O)), leading to the loss of effective active sites and a decrease in the catalytic activity. A relatively small CN(Pt-O) value in the subnanometric PtOx/CeO2 NWs, which was found to be the appropriate structure for their catalytic performance, remarkably increased the activity by about 1/2 order of magnitude. We believe our investigation on the interfacial coordination structure effects of subnanometric PtOx clusters dispersed on CeO2 nanowires can provide some new basic chemical insights into the metal-support interfacial interactions of Pt/CeO2 catalysts for understanding their catalytic performance in some relevant reactions.
Structural changes in noble metal nanoparticles during CO oxidation and their impact on catalyst activity

Abstract:Abstract The dynamical structure of a catalyst determines the availability of active sites on its surface. However, how nanoparticle (NP) catalysts re-structure under reaction conditions and how these changes associate with catalytic activity remains poorly understood. Using operando transmission electron microscopy, we show that Pd NPs exhibit reversible structural and activity changes during heating and cooling in mixed gas environments containing O 2 and CO. Below 400 °C, the NPs form flat low index facets and are inactive towards CO oxidation. Above 400 °C, the NPs become rounder, and conversion of CO to CO 2 increases significantly. This behavior reverses when the temperature is later reduced. Pt and Rh NPs under similar conditions do not exhibit such reversible transformations. We propose that adsorbed CO molecules suppress the activity of Pd NPs at lower temperatures by stabilizing low index facets and reducing the number of active sites. This hypothesis is supported by thermodynamic calculations.

Abstract:CeO2-TiO2 was prepared by the sol-gel method, and Au was supported on CeO2-TiO2 by the deposition-precipitation (DP) method. The in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), temperature- programmed reduction (TPR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and N2 sorption were used to characterize the structure and the surface properties of catalyst. The results show that, the presence of CeO2 in TiO2 not only can increase its surface area and restrain the growth of TiO2 crystallites, but can also enhance the micro-strain of TiO2. Based on these effects, the interaction between gold crystallites and the TiO2 can be enhanced, resulting in a promotion of its oxidation capacity. The in-situ FT-IR spectra of CO adsorbed on the catalyst show that, the surface oxygen species of the catalyst can be changed by a reduction of surface at different temperatures, on which the function of various oxygen species for the CO oxidation was discussed.
Dynamic Atom Clusters on AuCu Nanoparticle Surface During CO Oxidation.

Abstract:Supported alloy nanoparticles are prevailing alternative low-cost catalysts for both heterogeneous and electrochemical catalytic processes. Gas molecules selectively interacting with one metal element induces a dynamic structural change of alloy nanoparticles under reaction conditions and largely controls their catalytic properties. However, such a multicomponent dynamic-interaction-controlled evolution, both structural and chemical, remains far from clear. Herein, by using state-of-the-art environmental TEM, we directly visualize, in situ at the atomic scale, the evolution of a AuCu alloy nanoparticle supported on CeO2 during CO oxidation. We find that gas molecules can "free" metal atoms on the (010) surface and form highly mobile atom clusters. Remarkably, we discover that CO exposure induces Au segregation and activation on the nanoparticle surface, while O2 exposure leads to the segregation and oxidation of Cu on the particle surface. The as-formed Cu2O/AuCu interface may facilitate CO-O interaction corroborated by DFT calculations. These findings provide insights into the atomistic mechanisms on alloy nanoparticles during catalytic CO oxidation reaction and to a broad scope of rational design of alloy nanoparticle catalysts.
Reversible Transformation Between Terrace and Step Sites of Pt Nanoparticles on Titanium under CO and O2 Environments

Morphology-Dependent Evolutions of Sizes, Structures, and Catalytic Activity of Au Nanoparticles on Anatase TiO2 Nanocrystals

Abstract:Au nanoparticles with different loadings were prepared on anatase TiO2 nanocrystals with various morphologies predominantly exposing 10011 facets (denoted as TiO2{001}), {100} facets (denoted as TiO2{100}) and {101} facets (denoted as TiO2{001}) by the deposition-precipitation method. Sizes, structures, and catalytic activity in low-temperature CO oxidation of the resulting Au/TiO2 catalysts were comprehensively characterized. Nucleation, growth, and agglomeration of Au particles on TiO2 supports were observed to depend on TiO2 morphologies due to the morphology-dependent defect structures of TiO2 nanocrystals and subsequent Au-TiO2 interactions. Au particles mainly homogeneously nucleate and grow on these three TiO2 nanocrystals with Au loadings of 0.2-1%. With the increase in Au loadings to 2 and 5%, Au particles mainly agglomerate on TiO2{001}, mainly homogeneously nucleate and grow on TiO2{100}, and both nucleate and grow and slightly agglomerate on TiO2{101}. The electronic effect of supported Au particles on CO adsorption was observed, in which fine Au nanoparticles with electronic structures deviating from that of bulk Au exhibit a decreased adsorption capacity of CO. Meanwhile, fine Au nanoparticles are less able to activate surface lattice oxygen at the Au-TiO2 perimeters than large Au nanoparticles and exhibit a lowered intrinsic catalytic activity in low-temperature CO oxidation. These results nicely exemplify morphology-dependent metal-oxide interactions and catalysis.

Abstract:The synergetic effect in multicomponent catalysts is a topic of profound industrial importance and intense academic interest. On a newly identified multicomponent catalyst, Au/IrO(2)/TiO(2), first-principles density-functional theory is analyzed to clarify the outstanding catalytic activity of the system for oxidative reactions at high temperatures. By comparing CO oxidation on interfaces and single-component surfaces, it is revealed that a high dispersion of a more active oxide (IrO2), on a more inert oxide (TiO2) is the key. It preserves the sintering resistance of Au supported on less active oxides, while at the same time promoting oxidative reactions that occur at the Au/active-oxide interface.

Abstract:Ternary alloy catalysts outperform their binary counterparts in many reactions although the direct observation of structural evolution under reaction conditions to understand the structure-performance relationship significantly lacks. In situ transmission electron microscopy at atmospheric pressure provides a great opportunity to uncover dynamic structure and composition changes of ternary alloy nanoparticles. In this work, the atomic-scale elemental diffusion and surface reconstruction of ternary octahedral Pt2CuNi alloy nanoparticles in an oxidative environment at elevated temperatures are reported. Combining them with multiple characterizations and numerical simulation, it is revealed that the oxidative condition induced the lattice atom diffusion, which leads to the NiOx major/CuOx minor surface oxide layers accompanied by surface restructuring and lattice rearrangement. Further analysis helped to establish the numerical model and visualize the atom distribution variation in the restructuring process. Also, the model catalytic test of the oxygen reduction reaction demonstrates that the catalytic performance of ternary Pt2CuNi alloy nanoparticles can be tuned through oxidative treatment.

Abstract:Nanoparticle (NP) catalysts are ubiquitous in energy systems, chemical production, and reducing the environmental impact of many industrial processes. Under reactive environments, the availability of catalytically active sites on the NP surface is determined by its dynamic structure. However, atomic-scale insights into how a NP surface reconstructs under reaction conditions and the impact of the reconstruction on catalytic activity are still lacking. Using operando transmission electron microscopy, we show that Pd NPs exhibit periodic round–to–flat transitions altering their facets during CO oxidation reaction at atmospheric pressure and elevated temperatures. This restructuring causes spontaneous oscillations in the conversion of CO to CO 2 under constant reaction conditions. Our study reveals that the oscillatory behavior stems from the CO-adsorption-mediated periodic restructuring of the nanocatalysts between high-index-faceted round and low-index-faceted flat shapes. These atomic-scale insights into the dynamic surface properties of NPs under reactive conditions play an important role in the design of high-performance catalysts.
A Comparative Study in Structure and Reactivity of “ FeO Xon-Pt ” and “ NiO Xon-Pt ” Catalysts

Abstract:Oxide nanostructures grown on noble metal surfaces are often highly active in many reactions, in which the oxide/metal interfaces play an important role. In the present work, we studied the surface structures of FeO x -on-Pt and NiO x -on-Pt catalysts and their activity to CO oxidation reactions using both model catalysts and supported nanocatalysts. Although the active FeO1−x structure is stabilized on the Pt surface in a reductive reaction atmosphere, it is prone to change to an FeO2−x structure in oxidative reaction gases and becomes deactivated. In contrast, a NiO1−x surface structure supported on Pt is stable in both reductive and oxidative CO oxidation atmospheres. Consequently, CO oxidation over the NiO1−x -on-Pt catalyst is further enhanced in the CO oxidation atmosphere with an excess of O2. The present results demonstrate that the stability of the active oxide surface phases depends on the stabilization effect of the substrate surface and is also related to whether the oxide exhibits a variable oxidation state.
CO Oxidation on Au/TiO2: Condition-Dependent Active Sites and Mechanistic Pathways

Abstract:We present results of ab initio electronic structure and molecular dynamics simulations (AIMD), as well as a microkinetic model of CO oxidation catalyzed by TiO2 supported Au nanocatalysts. A coverage-dependent microkinetic analysis, based on energetics obtained with density functional methods, shows that the dominant kinetic pathway, activated oxygen species, and catalytic active sites are all strongly depended on both temperature and oxygen partial pressure. Under oxidizing conditions and T < 400 K, the prevalent pathway involves a dynamic single atom catalytic mechanism. This reaction is catalyzed by a transient Au-CO species that migrates from the Au-cluster onto a surface oxygen adatom. It subsequently reacts with the TiO2 support via a Mars van Krevelen mechanism to form CO2 and finally the Au atom reintegrates back into the gold cluster to complete the catalytic cycle. At 300 ≤ T ≤ 600 K, oxygen-bound single Oad-Au(+)-CO sites and the perimeter Au-sites of the nanoparticle work in tandem to optimally catalyze the reaction. Above 600 K, a variety of alternate pathways associated with both single-atom and the perimeter sites of the Au nanoparticle are found to be active. Under low oxygen pressures, Oad-Au(+)-CO species can be a source of catalyst deactivation and the dominant pathway involves only Au-perimeter sites. A detailed comparison of the current model and the existing literature resolves many apparent inconsistencies in the mechanistic interpretations.

Abstract:Understanding dynamic changes of catalytically active nanostructures under reaction conditions is a pivotal challenge in catalysis research, which has been extensively addressed in metal nanoparticles but is less explored in supported oxide nanocatalysts. Here, structural changes of iron oxide (FeOx) nanostructures supported on Pt in a gaseous environment were examined by scanning tunneling microscopy, ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy using both model systems and real catalysts. O-Fe (FeO) bilayer nanostructures can be stabilized on Pt surfaces in reductive environments such as vacuum conditions and H-2-rich reaction gas, which are highly active for low temperature CO oxidation. In contrast, exposure to H-2-free oxidative gases produces a less active O-Fe-O (FeO2) trilayer structure. Reversible transformation between the FeO bilayer and FeO2 trilayer structures can be achieved under alternating reduction and oxidation conditions, leading to oscillation in the catalytic oxidation performance.

Abstract:Rotation during reaction Determining changes in heterogeneous catalysts under reaction conditions can provide insight into mechanisms. Under reaction conditions, not only can metal nanoparticles change shape but their interaction with the oxide support could also be affected. Yuan et al. used aberration-corrected environmental transmission electron microscopy to study gold nanoparticles on titanium surfaces at low electron beam doses. During carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation at total pressures of a few millibars and 500°C, they observed that gold nanoparticles rotated by about 10° but returned to their original position when CO was removed. Abstract:Particle sintering and reshaping constitute the main cause for catalyst deactivation. An atomic-scale understanding of the correlation among the catalyst structure, its support, and the gas phase under realistic reaction conditions is required for its suppression. In this study, we combined high-energy grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, in situ mass spectrometry, ex situ scanning electron microscopy, and density functional theory calculations to unravel the driving force behind the composition-dependent particle shape changes and sintering processes of α-Al2O3(0001)-supported Pt–Pd alloy nanoparticles under realistic reaction conditions for CO oxidation. We find that pure Pt and Pt-rich particles, initially kinetically trapped in metastable flat particle shapes, undergo a strong reaction-induced height increase to adopt a more stable, theoretically predicted compact equilibrium shape. Contrarily, Pd-rich particles prove to be more resistant against shape changes, since they exhibit already a shape close to equilibrium. We thus conclude that the observed initial deviations in particle shape from the theoretical predictions are due to kinetic limitations during growth. Our data provide information on the segregation state of the alloy particles, indicating a Pt core and Pd shell structure under strongly reducing conditions and the alloying of Pt and Pd under the reaction conditions for CO oxidation close to stoichiometry.

Abstract:The morphology of nanoparticles (NPs) is crucial for determining their catalytic performance. The dramatic changes in the morphology of metal NPs during reactions observed in many in situ experiments pose great challenges for the identification of the geometry for optimal catalytic activities, which arouses the controversial understanding of the reaction mechanism. In this work, taking CO oxidation as a model reaction, we coupled a multiscale structure reconstruction model with kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to study the catalytic performance of the Pt NPs with changing morphology and reaction conditions. Through the quantitative analysis of contour plots for turnover frequencies, we show that the NPs with more well-coordinated sites exhibit optimal activity under CO-rich conditions at higher temperatures, while the reactivity of NPs with more low-coordination sites is optimal under O2-rich conditions at lower temperatures. Further analysis indicates that the competitive adsorption of CO and O2 plays the key role, in which the structure with optimal activity has a closer CO and O coverage. This work not only reconciles the controversy of the active geometry in the experiments, but offers an efficient method to guide the rational design of high-performance catalysts.

Abstract:Since catalytic performance of platinum-metal (Pt-M) nanoparticles is primarily determined by the chemical and structural configurations of the outermost atomic layers, detailed knowledge of the distribution of Pt and M surface atoms is crucial for the design of Pt-M electrocatalysts with optimum activity. Further, an understanding of how the surface composition and structure of electrocatalysts may be controlled by external means is useful for their efficient production. Here, we report our study of surface composition and the dynamics involved in facet-dependent oxidation of equilibrium-shaped Pt3Co nanoparticles in an initially disordered state via in situ transmission electron microscopy and density functional calculations. In brief, using our advanced in situ gas cell technique, evolution of the surface of the Pt3Co nanoparticles was monitored at the atomic scale during their exposure to an oxygen atmosphere at elevated temperature, and it was found that Co segregation and oxidation take place on {111} surfaces but not on {100} surfaces.

Abstract:The surface states of supported PtNi nanoparticles treated at alternating O2 and H2 atmosphere were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Reversible structural changes at the surfaces of the supported PtNi nanoparticles in response to reaction gases were observed, showing NiO-rich surface in oxidizing gases and Pt-rich surface in reducing gases. The dynamic behaviors can be attributed to two opposite gas-driven mass transport processes at bimetallic particle surfaces, including surface segregation of Pt at the bimetallic particles in H2 and encapsulation of the particles by NiO in O2. The similar surface structural changes can be observed in other bimetallic catalyst systems, as exemplified in supported PtCu and PtCo nanoparticles.

Abstract:Typically, varying pretreatment conditions probably results in the different catalytic performances for the bimetallic catalysts, and this originates from the surface evolution of catalysts during catalytic process. Hence, it is crucial to correlate surface chemistry (e.g., composition, chemical valence, etc.) of bimetallic nanocatalysts with their corresponding performances upon different pretreatments for the fundamental understanding of catalysis. Herein, compositionvaried (100) facet terminated Pd-Rh nanocubes (NCs) with the similar shape and sizes were prepared by a facile one-pot hydrothermal method to exclude the possible size and shape effect. Surface composition and valence state of these Pd 0.8 Rh 0.2 , Pd 0.6 Rh 0.4 , and Pd 0.2 Rh 0.8 NCs were tracked under different reaction conditions and during catalysis using a homebuilt ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (APXPS). The correlation of active surface of Pd-Rh NCs and their corresponding catalytic performance was established.
