Abstract:To provide insight into how to realize maximization of the synergistic effect of supported PdAu catalysts, we have performed first-principles calculations for CO2 reduction over PdAu/TiO2(1 0 1). The results indicate that introducing a secondary metal (Au) to supported Pd catalyst and controlling Au concentration can affect the binding energy of reactants and also alter the dominant reaction pathway. The energetically preferred path for CO2 reduction on Pd8-xAux/TiO2 changes from the formate pathway (referred to as the "CO2 HYD" pathway) (x = 0-3) to the reverse water-gas shift and CO hydrogenation ("RWGS + CO HYD") pathway (x = 4-6). Notably, the CO2 reduction activity shows a volcano trend as a function of the binding energy of the initial reactant CO2* in the "CO2 HYD" pathway or the adsorption energy difference between CHO* and CO* in the "RWGS + CO HYD" pathway. In addition, there is a component-dependent relationship between the water-promotion-effect and the nanoalloy structure. This work proposes fundamental insights into the effect of nanoalloy composition and water promotion in maximizing the synergy of PdAu catalysts for CO2 reduction, providing facile descriptors for the activity of reaction pathways, and offering important guidance for rational design of supported nanoalloy catalysts.
Optimizing Alkyne Hydrogenation Performance of Pd on Carbon in Situ Decorated with Oxygen-Deficient TiO2 by Integrating the Reaction and Diffusion

Abstract:The reaction/diffusion kinetics are fundamentally determined by the electronic properties of supported Pd catalysts and further govern the catalytic activity and selectivity in the partial hydrogenation of alkynes. However, how the electronic metal-support interactions and the tradeoff between reaction and diffusion affect the catalytic performance still remain elusive. Here, the optimized catalyst Pd supported on carbon decorated with oxygen-deficient TiO2(Pd/TiO2-V-o@C) features a remarkable enhancement in performance for semihydrogenation of 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol with a TOF 31-fold higher than that of Lindlar catalyst. The improved performance of Pd/TiO2-V-o@C benefits from the fact that TiO2-V-o@C subtly modulates the electronic properties of Pd, and an appropriate amount of TiO2-V-o allows a decrease in the reaction barrier and C promotes the diffusion ability of the catalyst, achieving the balance between reaction and diffusion. By using microkinetic modeling, the reactivity difference of various catalysts is quantitatively predicted and the calculated turnover frequency volcano curve is rationalized as a function of reaction barrier and diffusion ability, which agrees well with the experimental results. The quantitative regulation of catalytic performance by tuning the support properties is a general strategy, which provides a basis to design robust catalysts for diverse reactions.
Electron-enriched Single-Pd-sites on G-C3n4 Nanosheets Achieved by In-Situ Anchoring Twinned Pd Nanoparticles for Efficient CO2 Photoreduction

Abstract:Modulating electronic structures of single-atom metal cocatalysts is vital for highly active photoreduction of CO2, and it's especially challenging to develop a facile method to modify the dispersion of atomical photocatalytic sites. We herein report an ion-loading pyrolysis route to in-situ anchor Pd single atoms as well as twinned Pd nanoparticles on ultra-thin graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (PdTP/PdSA-CN) for high-efficiency photoreduction of CO2. The anchored Pd twinned nanoparticles donate electrons to adjacent single Pd-N4 sites through the carbon nitride networks, and the optimized PdTP/PdSA-CN photocatalyst exhibits a CO evolution rate up to 46.5 mu mol g-1 h-1 with nearly 100% selectivity. As revealed by spectroscopic and theoretical analyses, the superior photocatalytic activity is attributed to the lowered desorption barrier of carbonyl species at electron-enriched Pd single atoms, together with the improved efficiencies of light-harvesting and charge separation/transport. This work has demonstrated the engineering of the electron density of single active sites with twinned metal nanoparticles assisted by strong electronic interaction with the support of the atomic metal, and unveiled the underlying mechanism for expedited photocatalytic efficiency.
Crystal Facet Induced Single-Atom Pd/CoxOyon a Tunable Metal-Support Interface for Low Temperature Catalytic Oxidation

Abstract:Atomic dispersed metal sites in single-atom catalysts are highly mobile and easily sintered to form large particles, which deteriorates the catalytic performance severely. Moreover, lack of criterion concerning the role of the metal-support interface prevents more efficient and wide application. Here, a general strategy is reported to synthesize stable single atom catalysts by crafting on a variety of cobalt-based nanoarrays with precisely controlled architectures and compositions. The highly uniform, well-aligned, and densely packed nanoarrays provide abundant oxygen vacancies (17.48%) for trapping Pd single atoms and lead to the creation of 3D configured catalysts, which exhibit very competitive activity toward low temperature CO oxidation (100% conversion at 90 degrees C) and prominent long-term stability (continuous conversion at 60 degrees C for 118 h). Theoretical calculations show that O vacancies at high-index {112} facet of Co(x)O(y)nanocrystallite are preferential sites for trapping single atoms, which guarantee strong interface adhesion of Pd species to cobalt-based support and play a pivotal role in preventing the decrement of activity, even under moisture-rich conditions (approximate to 2% water vapor). The progress presents a promising opportunity for tailoring catalytic properties consistent with the specific demand on target process, beyond a facile design with a tunable metal-support interface.

Abstract:Solar driven conversion of CO2 into carbonaceous chemicals is a promising strategy to mitigate greenhouse gas emission and simultaneously store renewable energy. The rational construction of heterostructured cocatalysts represents an efficient method to improve the photocatalytic activity and selectivity for CO2 reduction. In this work, with Pd@Au core-shell nanostructures with tunable Au thickness as model cocatalysts, we demonstrate the synergism of surface strain and interfacial polarization for enhanced photoreduction of CO2 to CO. According to our experimental analysis and theoretical simulation, resulting from the mismatch in lattice parameters between the Pd core and the Au shell, compressive strain on the Au surface elevates the d-band center and improves the adsorption of the key intermediate *COOH. Meanwhile, charge polarization, driven by the difference in electronegativity between Pd and Au, accelerates the interfacial charge transfer and increases the electron density on the Au surface. It is found that both effects are dependent on the thickness of the Au shell. As a result, a three-atom-thick Au shell dramatically boosts the overall efficiency in CO2-to-CO conversion with an impressive activity of 166.3 mu mol g(cat)(-1) h(-1) and selectivity of 90.6%. This study can be viewed as a means of designing photocatalysts via the simultaneous control of surface catalytic reactivity and interfacial charge transfer in cocatalysts.

Abstract:Different types of Pt-Co3O4 catalysts were synthesized via metal–organic templates, by changing varying loading forms, stability templates, and pyrolysis temperatures to boost toluene combustion. The regulatory mechanism of strong metal support interaction (SMSI) and the relationship between SMSI and catalytic performance were studied. The results demonstrate that Pt-Co3O4 (PCPO) synthesized using a more stable metal–organic template and an in-situ growth strategy effectively prolonging carbon retention time during the calcination process is most conducive to the formation of SMSI. However, over-formed SMSI can not unconditionally improve the performance of heterogeneous catalysis, and may even hinder the catalytic reaction. Therefore, selecting appropriate preparation conditions to achieve a moderate SMSI is crucial for optimizing the catalytic performance of the supported catalyst. Finally, on Pt-Co3O4, the combustion mechanism of toluene follows both the Langmur-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism and Mars-VanKrevelen (MvK) mechanisms. This study provides valuable insights for SMSI in regulating and optimizing the performance of supported catalysts in the field of heterogeneous catalysts.
Atomic Layer Deposition on Pd Nanocrystals for Forming Pd-TiO 2 Interface Toward Enhanced CO Oxidation

Abstract:Pd typically exhibits relatively low catalytic activity in CO oxidation, as CO is apt to be adsorbed on Pd to poison the surface for O2 activation. In this Letter, we report that this limitation can be overcome by integrating Pd with TiO2. The TiO2 was coated on Pd nanocubes with a controllable thickness using atomic layer deposition (ALD) method. Given the different work functions of TiO2 and Pd, the electrons in TiO2 semiconductor will flow toward Pd. With the electron density increased on Pd, the adsorption of CO to Pd will be weakened while the oxygen activation can be facilitated. Meanwhile, the interface-confined sites at Pd-TiO2 may further enhance the oxygen activation. As the species adsorption and activation are strongly correlated with electron density, the performance of Pd-TiO2 in CO oxidation turns out to depend on the TiO2 thickness, which determines the number of transferred electrons, within a certain range (<1.8 nm). This work provides a new strategy for enhancing catalytic performance through tailoring charge densities in hybrid catalysts.
Synergistic Effect of Cu Single Atoms and Au–Cu Alloy Nanoparticles on TiO 2 for Efficient CO 2 Photoreduction

Abstract:The synergy between metal alloy nanoparticles (NPs) and single atoms (SAs) should maximize the catalytic activity. However, there are no relevant reports on photocatalytic CO2 reduction via utilizing the synergy between SAs and alloy NPs. Herein, we developed a facile photodeposition method to coload the Cu SAs and Au–Cu alloy NPs on TiO2 for the photocatalytic synthesis of solar fuels with CO2 and H2O. The optimized photocatalyst achieved record-high performance with formation rates of 3578.9 for CH4 and 369.8 μmol g–1 h–1 for C2H4, making it significantly more realistic to implement sunlight-driven synthesis of value-added solar fuels. The combined in situ FT-IR spectra and DFT calculations revealed the molecular mechanisms of photocatalytic CO2 reduction and C–C coupling to form C2H4. We proposed that the synergistic function of Cu SAs and Au–Cu alloy NPs could enhance the adsorption activation of CO2 and H2O and lower the overall activation energy barrier (including the rate-determining step) for the CH4 and C2H4 formation. These factors all enable highly efficient and stable production of solar fuels of CH4 and C2H4. The Facet Dependence of CO2 Electroreduction Selectivity on a Pd3Au Bimetallic Catalyst: A DFT Study

Abstract:The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) has emerged as a promising approach to addressing global energy and environmental challenges. Alloys are of particular importance in these applications due to their unique chemical and physical properties. In this study, the possible mechanism of the C1 products from the electrochemical reduction of CO2 on four different surfaces of Pd3Au alloy bimetallic catalysts is predicted using the density functional theory. The differences in the number of d-band electrons and the charge distribution and morphology of the different surfaces result in differing catalytic activity and selectivity on the same surface. On different surfaces, Pd3Au alloy bimetallic catalysts have different potential limiting steps in CO2RR, resulting in differing selectivity. The Pd3Au (100) surface has a good selectivity for HER, indicating that the increase in the net charge on the surface of the alloy improves the selectivity for HER. The Pd3Au (211) surface, with a step structure, shows a good selectivity for methanol production from CO2RR. In addition, an electronic structure analysis shows that the selectivity of the reactions involved in the conversion of adsorbates is determined by the difference between the center of the d-band on the top of the catalyst, where the reactant and the product are located. The results of this study may provide some theoretical basis for designing and developing more efficient and selective CO2 reduction catalysts.

Abstract:Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction to formate (CO2RRTF) on Pd-based surfaces merits very low overpotentials, yet is challenged with identification of a high-performance catalyst and validation of the reaction pathway. In this work, an interactive study of catalyst and mechanism is presented to address the above bottleneck. On one hand, inspired by preliminary mechanistic understanding of HCOOH ↔ CO2 interconversion at Pd surfaces, a Bi-modified Pd/C with the known high performance towards formic acid dehydrogenation (FAD) is elected as the prototype candidate catalyst for CO2RRTF, exhibiting indeed significantly higher activity, selectivity, durability and extended working potentials. On the other hand, the CO2 chemical hydrogenation mechanism is clarified with monodentate formate being the key intermediate for CO2RRTF on Pd surfaces, by applying isotope labeled ATR-SEIRAS measurement and kinetic analysis in conjunction with DFT calculations. The research paradigm facilitates locating efficient catalysts and advancing mechanistic study for CO2RRTF on Pd surfaces and beyond.

Abstract:The synergetic effect in multicomponent catalysts is a topic of profound industrial importance and intense academic interest. On a newly identified multicomponent catalyst, Au/IrO(2)/TiO(2), first-principles density-functional theory is analyzed to clarify the outstanding catalytic activity of the system for oxidative reactions at high temperatures. By comparing CO oxidation on interfaces and single-component surfaces, it is revealed that a high dispersion of a more active oxide (IrO2), on a more inert oxide (TiO2) is the key. It preserves the sintering resistance of Au supported on less active oxides, while at the same time promoting oxidative reactions that occur at the Au/active-oxide interface.
A Vicinal Effect for Promoting Catalysis of Pd1/TiO2: Supports of Atomically Dispersed Catalysts Play More Roles Than Simply Serving As Ligands.

Abstract:Atomically dispersing metal atoms on supports has been emerging as an effective strategy to maximize the atom utilization of metals for catalysis. However, due to the lack of effective tools to characterize the detailed structure of metal-support interface, the chemical functions of supports in atomically dispersed metal catalysts are hardly elucidated at the molecular level. In this work, an atomically dispersed Pd1/TiO2 catalyst with Ti(III) vicinal to Pd is prepared and used to demonstrate the direct involvement of metal atoms on support in the catalysis of dispersed metal atoms. Systematic studies reveal that the Ti(III)-O-Pd interface facilitates the activation of O2 into superoxide (O2-), thus promoting the catalytic oxidation. The catalyst exhibits the highest CO turn-over frequency among ever-reported Pd-based catalysts, and enhanced catalysis in the combustion of harmful volatile organic compound (i.e., toluene) and green-house gas (i.e., methane). The demonstrated direct involvement of metal atoms on oxide support suggests that the real active sites of atomically dispersed metal catalysts can be far beyond isolated metal atoms themselves. Metal atoms on oxide supports in the vicinity serve as another vector to promote the catalysis of atomically dispersed metal catalysts.
Photocatalytic Reduction of Carbon Dioxide to Methane at the Pd-Supported TiO 2 Interface: Mechanistic Insights from Theoretical Studies

Abstract:Photocatalytic conversion of CO2 into value-added solar fuels is a promising solution for energy crisis and global warming. Recent experimental studies show that the Pd nanoparticle-supported TiO2 surface has excellent photocatalytic performances for CO2 transformation. However, the mechanism is still ambiguous. In this work, we have explored the detailed mechanism of photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CH4 at the interface of the anatase TiO2(101) surface with a 13-atom Pd nanocluster (referred to as Pd13@TiO2) using periodic density functional calculations. Our results demonstrate that the adsorption and initial activation of CO2 and the hydrogenation of CO toward CH4 are all contributed by the marriage of the Pd13 cluster and the TiO2(101) support. Benefiting from the favorable geometric and electronic structures at the interface, the highest energy barrier among all the studied processes is reduced to 1.16 eV, which makes the overall CO2 photocatalytic reduction proceed efficiently. The present first-principles insights provide important mechanistic implications for designing superior metal/semiconductor photocatalysts for converting CO2 to carbon-neutral fuels.

Abstract:The photocatalytic water-mediated CO2 reduction reaction, which holds great promise for the conversion of CO2 into valuable chemicals, is often hindered by inefficient separation of photogenerated charges and a lack of suitable catalytic sites. Herein, we have developed a glycerol coordination assembly approach to precisely control the distribution of atomically dispersed Cu species by occupying Ti-defects and adjusting the ratio between Cu species and Ti-defects in a hierarchical TiO2. The optimal sample demonstrates a ∼4-fold improvement in CO2-to-CO conversion compared to normal TiO2 nanoparticles. The high activity could be attributed to the Ti defects, which enhance the photogenerated charge separation and simultaneously facilitate the adsorption of water molecules, thereby promoting the water oxidation reaction. Moreover, by means of in situ EPR and FTIR spectra, we have demonstrated that Cu species can effectively capture photogenerated electrons and facilitate the adsorption of CO2, so as to catalyze the reduction of CO2. This work provides a strategy for the construction of atomic-level synergistic catalytic sites and the utilization of in situ techniques to reveal the underlying mechanism.

Abstract:CO oxidative esterification is crucial in converting inorganic CO into organic oxygenated compounds within C1 chemistry and technology. However, understanding the structure-activity relationship underlying this reaction remains limited, primarily due to the entanglement of the Pd's geometric and electronic structures, which complicates selectivity control in practical applications. In this work, we design four Pd-based catalysts using the Al(111) motif to investigate their catalytic performance in CO oxidative esterification through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Firstly, the larger lattice parameter of Al weakens horizontal Pd–Pd interactions while enhancing the vertical stability of Pd. Secondly, the electronic structure of Pd is locally regulated via charge transfer between subsurface and surface Pd, driven by their differences in work function. Our results indicate that the relative activity between CC coupling for dimethyl oxalate (DMO) and CO coupling for dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is primarily influenced by Pd's electronic effects, as revealed by energy barrier decomposition analysis. Thus, focusing on the regulation of Pd's electronic effects may offer a new strategy for controlling the selective oxidation esterification of CO.

Abstract:The direct CO2 hydrogenation to liquid fuels is a sustainable approach to decarbonize the future air transport. This reaction proceeds through a tandem pathway involving the reverse water gas shift reaction (RWGSR) to produce CO and the subsequent traditional CO-Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. On Co-based catalysts, the introduction of dopants can improve CO2 activation, enhance the RWGSR activity and decrease the methanation side reaction. We reported that alkali-promoted Co/TiO2 catalysts outperform the unpromoted ones in terms of activity and selectivity towards C2+ (J. Catal. 2023, 428, 115202). To further improve the catalytic performances, we doped an alkali-promoted Co/TiO2 catalyst with palladium, which is active for the RWGSR and promotes hydrogen spillover. The effect of noble metal location in relation to cobalt, a rarely studied parameter, was investigated by using bimetallic and mixtures of monometallic catalysts. This study demonstrates that, whatever the location of Pd and its loading (0.03-0.9 wt%), doping with this metal leads to an improvement in catalytic activity. Furthermore, we show that the proximity between Co and Pd has a pronounced effect on the selectivity of the reaction. The best configuration to achieve higher activity and C2+ selectivity is obtained using mixtures of monometallic catalysts.

Abstract:This study examines the impact of different supports SnO2, TiO2, and SiO2 on the catalytic performance and water resistance of PdO-based catalysts for CO oxidation. By merging experimental data with DFT calculations, we unveil distinct characteristics exhibited by each catalyst. Specifically, PdO/TiO2 stands out with exceptional CO oxidation activity, attributed to its minute Pd grain size, robust CO adsorption capacity, and optimal Pd dispersion on the TiO2 surface. In stark contrast, PdO/SnO2 demonstrates heightened activity in the presence of water vapor, whereas PdO/SiO2 experiences minimal effects, as evidenced by quantitative H2O-TPD analysis and DFT simulations of surface interactions. Water vapor exerts differential impacts on the catalytic performance of these catalysts by modulating the energy barriers associated with the CO oxidation mechanisms. On PdO/TiO2, the presence of H2O or H-OH elevates the energy barrier for CO to abstract surface oxygen, thereby diminishing catalyst activity under humid conditions and gradually leading to deactivation due to accumulated surface H2O and OH species. Conversely, on PdO/SnO2, when H2O is present in the form of OH, the energy barrier diminishes, augmenting CO oxidation activity owing to the beneficial effects of surface OH groups.

Abstract:To develop an efficient photocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction aimed at mitigating CO2 emissions and greenhouse effects, we propose a straightforward strategy involving hydrogen reduction treatment of PtCu/Ti to create the PtCu/Ti-H2 catalyst with a distinctive interface structure. Compared with the fresh PtCu/Ti catalyst and the benchmark anatase TiO2, the CH4 production of the PtCu/Ti-H2 catalyst increased by 2 times and 81.6 times, respectively. Comprehensive characterizations confirmed the formation of Ptδ+-Ov-Ti3+ and Cuδ+-Ov-Ti3+ interface structures on the hydrogen-treated PtCu/Ti-H2 catalyst, enhancing light absorption and the separation of photogenerated charge carriers. Further investigation into the reaction mechanism revealed that the Ptδ+-Ov-Ti3+ and Cuδ+-Ov-Ti3+ species on PtCu/Ti-H2 serve as more favorable sites for CO2 adsorption and activation, promoting an enhanced formaldehyde mechanism. This study not only elucidates the relation between photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity and the PtCu/Ti interface structure but also offers a novel strategy for designing alloy/oxide-based catalysts for CO2 photoreduction, overcoming the limitations of previous studies that focused on metal or vacancy systems.
