Abstract:Density functional theory investigations on CO2 hydrogenation to methanol mechanisms over Cu13 cluster loaded catalyst were performed. The results indicate that introducing TiO2 into Al2O3 promoted the residual electrons from Al2O3 surface directionally transmitted to the interface formed by the loaded Cu13 cluster and the support surface, thus created the electron-rich active interface. Incorporating single atom Ga promoter further gathered the residual electrons and stabilized the loaded Cu13 clusters. The electron-rich property of the active interface promoted the chemical adsorption and activation of both CO2 and the generated carbonyl species. Further favors the hydrogenating of carbonyl intermediates to methanol and effectively enhances the methanol selectivity. Moreover, CO2 priors to hydrogenated to methanol via reverse water gas shift pathway over Cu13/Ga-AT computational model with changed reaction rate controlling step with reduced activation energy. This work offers a simple approach for efficient copper-based methanol synthesis catalysts through control of interface electron structure.

Abstract:Alloy catalysts have been reported to be robust in catalyzing various heterogeneous reactions due to the synergistic effect between different metal atoms. In this work, aimed at understanding the effect of the coordination environment of surface atoms on the catalytic performance of alloy catalysts, a series of PtxCu1-x alloy model catalysts supported on anatase-phase TiO2 (PtxCu1-x/Ti, x = 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8) were developed and applied in the classic photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction. According to the results of catalytic performance evaluation, it was found that the photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity on PtxCu1-x/Ti showed a volcanic change as a function of the Pt/Cu ratio, the highest CO2 conversion was achieved on Pt0.5Cu0.5/Ti, with CH4 as the main product. Further systematic characterizations and theoretical calculations revealed that the equimolar amounts of Pt and Cu in Pt0.5Cu0.5/Ti facilitated the generation of more Cu-Pt-paired sites (i.e., the higher coordination number of Pt-Cu), which would favor a bridge adsorption configuration of CO2 and facilitate the electron transfer, thus resulting in the highest photocatalytic CO2 reduction efficiency on Pt0.5Cu0.5/Ti. This work provided new insights into the design of excellent CO2 reduction photocatalysts with high CH4 selectivity from the perspective of surface coordination environment engineering on alloy catalysts.

Abstract:Solar-induced photothermal catalysis of the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising method for chemical CO2 conversion. Modification of the metal oxide catalyst surface, including the introduction of oxygen vacancies and the doping and loading of metal or metal oxides, has a considerable influence on the product selectivity of the CO2RR. The complete free energy profiles of the CO2RR pathway on modified anatase TiO2 (101) surfaces are calculated based on density functional theory. The modified surfaces enhance the adsorption of CO2, and competition between desorption and reduction of the key intermediates (CO*, HCOOH*, HCHO*, and CH3OH*) is crucial to the selectivity for the CO2RR to form C1 products. The loading of Au and the doping of MgO enhance the electron transfer between the key intermediates and the surface, as well as the internal electron transfer inside the key intermediates, which efficiently activates the key intermediates and significantly increases the CH4 selectivity of the CO2RR.
Atomic Interface Engineering of Single‐Atom Pt/TiO2‐Ti3C2 for Boosting Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Abstract:Single‐atom Pt anchored on 3D TiO2‐Ti3C2 is synthesized through an in situ transformation and photoreduction method. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the atomic interface engineering of single‐atom Pt and interfacial TiOTi, the optimized photocatalyst exhibits excellent CO2‐to‐CO conversion activity of 20.5 μmol g–1 h–1 with a selectivity of 96%, which is five times that of commercial TiO2 (P25). Solar‐driven CO2 conversion into valuable fuels is a promising strategy to alleviate the energy and environmental issues. However, inefficient charge separation and transfer greatly limits the photocatalytic CO2 reduction efficiency. Herein, single‐atom Pt anchored on 3D hierarchical TiO2‐Ti3C2 with atomic‐scale interface engineering is successfully synthesized through an in situ transformation and photoreduction method. The in situ growth of TiO2 on Ti3C2 nanosheets can not only provide interfacial driving force for the charge transport, but also create an atomic‐level charge transfer channel for directional electron migration. Moreover, the single‐atom Pt anchored on TiO2 or Ti3C2 can effectively capture the photogenerated electrons through the atomic interfacial PtO bond with shortened charge migration distance, and simultaneously serve as active sites for CO2 adsorption and activation. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the atomic interface engineering of single‐atom Pt and interfacial TiOTi, the optimized photocatalyst exhibits excellent CO2‐to‐CO conversion activity of 20.5 μmol g−1 h−1 with a selectivity of 96%, which is five times that of commercial TiO2 (P25). This work sheds new light on designing ideal atomic‐scale interface and single‐atom catalysts for efficient solar fuel conversation.

Self-assembly of a Highly Stable and Active Co3O4/H-TiO2 Bulk Heterojunction with High-Energy Interfacial Structures for Low Temperature CO Catalytic Oxidation

Abstract:Development of transition metal oxide catalysts with a tunable structure is extremely important for energy, chemical and environmental processes. Herein, we report a new strategy for the synthesis of a highly stable and active Co3O4/H-TiO2 bulk heterojunction with high-energy interfacial structures through two-step hydrothermal-crystallization for efficient low-temperature CO catalytic oxidation. By selectively etching, an anatase TiO2 support exposing the high-index (112) facet was first created. The high-index (112) facet with high surface energy can endow the bulk TiO2 support with unique physical and chemical properties so as to act as a foundation to construct a robust high-energy interfacial bulk heterojunction. Because of the presence of Ti–O–Co species at the high-energy interface, the prepared Co3O4/H-TiO2 bulk heterojunction possessed much more catalytic active sites compared to Co3O4 nanoparticles supported on conventional TiO2 supports and exhibited a turnover frequency (TOF) value of 3.56 × 10−3 s−1 at 120 °C, which was very competitive compared to those of reported cobalt-based catalysts and 1000 times higher than that of commercial Co3O4. Importantly, due to the strong interactions between Co3O4 and the TiO2 bulk support exposed high-index facet, more attractive water-resisting properties for low temperature CO oxidation can be achieved in the presence of steam (∼2%) compared to previously reported catalysts. The results show promising opportunities for tailoring catalytic behaviors beyond a facile and rational design with a controllable metal–support interface.

Abstract:Intensive efforts have been devoted to exploring the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) mechanism to get valuable high-level hydrocarbons under mild reaction conditions. Herein, the investigation of thermocatalytic CO2RR on a metallic oxide-supported catalyst (Pt-TiO2) is conducted by utilizing the surface and chemical-state sensitive ambient pressure X-ray spectroscopy together with the mass spectroscopy. It is revealed that CO2 is first chemisorbed on surface in the form of CO2 δ− by capturing electrons from Pt, while the introduction of H2 induces the formation of various intermediates species, such as HCOO, sp3 carbon, and CHxO. Subsequently, CO is discovered after the dissociation of the HCOO species from the reversed water–gas shift reaction, and CH4 is eventually formed after the further hydrogenation of CH x O. Importantly, increasing the concentration of H2 and the overall reactant pressure considerably improves the CO2 activation and the selectivity of CH4, while excessive H2 does not bring any more apparent enhancement of CO2RR on Pt-TiO2. Ultimately, the optimized concentration of H2 is proposed to be 1:2 in the reactant mixture, and the manipulation of methane product selectivity is also realized. Thus, our report might shed valuable insights on the fundamental understanding of CO2 conversion mechanism based on the metallic-oxide catalyst.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction with H2O to value-added fuels is an advanced strategy to solve the energy crisis and realize carbon neutralization. Herein, the spatial engineering of redox-active sites on different facets of TiO2 was achieved by stepwise selective photo-deposition, which controls the transfer direction of photogenerated electrons and holes. The 2Cu/TiO2/2Co3O4 sample exhibited high photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance with the production of CO, CH4, CH3CH3, and CH2CH2 reached 9.41, 43.52, 5.39, and 1.41 μmol∙gcat -1∙h- 1, respectively. Notably, the C2 products was generated over the 2Cu/TiO2/2Co3O4 composite in comparison with pure TiO2 under same reaction condition. The in-situ DRIFTS spectra identify the formation of critical intermediates (*CHO, *CH4, and CHO*CHO*) and reveal the reaction kinetics of H2O oxidation. Moreover, the DFT calculations combined with the in-situ spectral technique are applied to investigate the reaction pathways of photocatalytic CO2 reduction and C–C coupling. This work demonstrated that the spatial engineering of Cu and Co3O4 on TiO2 provides appropriate redox reaction sites to synergistically boost the photocatalytic CO2 reduction and C–C coupling.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 conversion into a high-value-added C2 product is a highly challenging task because of insufficient electron deliverability and sluggish C-C coupling kinetics. Engineering catalytic interfaces in photocatalysts provides a promising approach to manipulate photoinduced charge carriers and create multiple catalytic sites for boosting the generation of C2 product from CO2 reduction. Herein, a Cuδ+/CeO2-TiO2 photocatalyst that contains atomically dispersed Cuδ+ sites anchored on the CeO2-TiO2 heterostructures consisting of highly dispersed CeO2 nanoparticles on porous TiO2 is designedly constructed by the pyrolytic transformation of a Cu2+-Ce3+/MIL-125-NH2 precursor. In the designed photocatalyst, TiO2 acts as a light-harvesting material for generating electron-hole pairs that are efficiently separated by CeO2-TiO2 interfaces, and the Cu-Ce dual active sites synergistically facilitate the generation and dimerization of *CO intermediates, thus lowering the energy barrier of C-C coupling. As a consequence, the Cuδ+/CeO2-TiO2 photocatalyst exhibits a production rate of 4.51 μmol-1·gcat-1·h-1 and 73.9% selectivity in terms of electron utilization for CO2 to C2H4 conversion under simulated sunlight, with H2O as hydrogen source and hole scavenger. The photocatalytic mechanism is revealed by operando spectroscopic methods as well as theoretical calculations. This study displays the rational construction of heterogeneous photocatalysts for boosting CO2 conversion and emphasizes the synergistic effect of multiple active sites in enhancing the selectivity of C2 product.

Abstract:The platinum single-atom-catalyst is verified as a very successful route to approach the size limit of Pt catalysts, while how to further improve the catalytic efficiency of Pt is a fundamental scientific question and is challenging because the size issue of Pt is approached at the ultimate ceiling as single atoms. Here, a new route for further improving Pt catalytic efficiency by cobalt (Co) and Pt dual-single-atoms on titanium dioxide (TiO2 ) surfaces, which contains a fraction of nonbonding oxygen-coordinated Co-O-Pt dimers, is reported. These Co-Pt dimer sites originate from loading high-density Pt single-atoms and Co single-atoms, with them anchoring randomly on the TiO2 substrate. This dual-single-atom catalyst yields 13.4% dimer sites and exhibits an ultrahigh and stable photocatalytic activity with a rate of 43.467 mmol g-1 h-1 and external quantum efficiency of ≈83.4% at 365 nm. This activity far exceeds those of equal amounts of Pt single-atom and typical Pt clustered catalysts by 1.92 and 1.64 times, respectively. The enhancement mechanism relies on the oxygen-coordinated Co-O-Pt dimer coupling, which can mutually optimize the electronic states of both Pt and Co sites to weaken H* binding. Namely, the "mute" Co single-atom is activated by Pt single-atom and the activity of the Pt atom is further enhanced through the dimer interaction. This strategy of nonbonding interactive dimer sites and the oxygen-mediated catalytic mechanisms provide emerging rich opportunities for greatly improving the catalytic efficiency and developing novel catalysts with creating new electronic states.

Abstract:Solar driven conversion of CO2 into carbonaceous chemicals is a promising strategy to mitigate greenhouse gas emission and simultaneously store renewable energy. The rational construction of heterostructured cocatalysts represents an efficient method to improve the photocatalytic activity and selectivity for CO2 reduction. In this work, with Pd@Au core-shell nanostructures with tunable Au thickness as model cocatalysts, we demonstrate the synergism of surface strain and interfacial polarization for enhanced photoreduction of CO2 to CO. According to our experimental analysis and theoretical simulation, resulting from the mismatch in lattice parameters between the Pd core and the Au shell, compressive strain on the Au surface elevates the d-band center and improves the adsorption of the key intermediate *COOH. Meanwhile, charge polarization, driven by the difference in electronegativity between Pd and Au, accelerates the interfacial charge transfer and increases the electron density on the Au surface. It is found that both effects are dependent on the thickness of the Au shell. As a result, a three-atom-thick Au shell dramatically boosts the overall efficiency in CO2-to-CO conversion with an impressive activity of 166.3 mu mol g(cat)(-1) h(-1) and selectivity of 90.6%. This study can be viewed as a means of designing photocatalysts via the simultaneous control of surface catalytic reactivity and interfacial charge transfer in cocatalysts.

Abstract:The structure of the social wasp communities was studied in the forest areas of the Karkonosze Mts. transformed by acid rains in 1989 and 1994. A significant increase of species diversity (H') was observed in the season of the even year, which resulted from the increased competing interactions between queen mothers. Whereas the distribution of the species' number decreased together with the altitude proportionally to natural distribution of the species' number recorded in the Tatra Mts. On the other hand, the only significantly increased value in the dynamics of Vespinae density in vegetation zones of the Karkonosze Mts. was recorded for the lower subalpine forest. While observing the progressing successive restoration of forests, one can assume that the recorded structural changes in communities of social wasps represent their transitional state.
Interfacial molecular regulation of TiO 2 for enhanced and stable cocatalyst-free photocatalytic hydrogen production

Abstract:On the basis of the inherent property limitations of commercial P25-TiO 2 , many surface interface modification methods have attracted substantial attention for further improving the photocatalytic properties. However, current strategies for designing and modifying efficient photocatalysts (which exhibit complicated manufacturing processes and harsh conditions) are not efficient for production that is low cost, is nontoxic, and exhibits good stability; and therefore restrict practical applications. Herein, a facile and reliable method is reported for in situ amine-containing silane coupling agent functionalization of commercial P25-TiO 2 by covalent surface modification for constructing a highly efficient photocatalyst. As a consequence, a high efficiency of H 2 evolution was achieved for TiO 2 -SDA with 0.95 mmol h −1 g −1 (AQE ∼45.6% at 365 nm) under solar light irradiation without a co-catalyst. The amination modification broadens the light absorption range of the photocatalyst, inhibits the binding of photogenerated carriers, and improves the photocatalytic efficiency; which was verified by photochemical properties and DFT theoretical calculations. This covalent modification method ensures the stability of the photocatalytic reaction. This work provides an approach for molecularly modified photocatalysts to improve photocatalytic performance by covalently modifying small molecules containing amine groups on the photocatalyst surface.

Abstract:The photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction is a sustainable route to the direct conversion of greenhouse gases into chemicals without additional energy consumption. Given the vast amount of greenhouse gas, numerous efforts have been devoted to developing inorganic photocatalysts, e.g., titanium dioxide (TiO2 ), due to their stability, low cost, and environmentally friendly properties. However, a more efficient TiO2 photocatalyst without noble metals is highly desirable for CO2 reduction, and it is both difficult and urgent to produce selectively valuable compounds. Here, a novel "single-atom site at the atomic step" strategy is developed by anchoring a single tungsten (W) atom site with oxygen-coordination at the intrinsic steps of classic TiO2 nanoparticles. The composition of active sites for CO2 reduction can be controlled by tuning the additional W5+ to form W5+ -O-Ti3+ sites, resulting in both significant CO2 reduction efficiency with 60.6 μmol g- 1 h- 1 and selectivity for methane (CH4 ) over carbon monoxide (CO), which exceeds those of pristine TiO2 by more than one order of magnitude. The mechanism relies on the accurate control of the single-atom sites at step with 22.8% coverage of surface sites and the subsequent excellent electron-hole separation along with the favorable adsorption-desorption of intermediates at the sites.

In this work, highly dispersed Bi2Ti2O7 was introduced into defective TiO2 to adjust its oxidation potential and the generation of radicals, further inhibiting reverse reactions during the photocatalytic conversion of CO2. Moreover, an in situ topochemical reaction etching route was designed, which achieved defective surfaces, a contacted heterophase interface, and an efficient electron transfer path. The optimized heterophase photocatalyst exhibited 93.9% CH4 selectivity at a photocatalytic rate of 6.8 μmol·g-1·h-1, which was 7.9 times higher than that of P25. This work proposes a feasible approach to fabricating photocatalysts with well-designed band structures, highly dispersed heterophase interfaces, and sufficient surface active sites to effectively modulate the selectivity and activity of CO2 photoreduction by manipulating the reaction pathways.

Shaping and Doping Metal-Organic Framework-Derived TiO2 to Steer the Selectivity of Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction toward CH4

Abstract:Steering selectivity in photocatalytic conversion of CO2, especially toward deep reduction products, is vital to energy and environmental goals yet remains a great challenge. In this work, we demonstrate a facet-dependent photocatalytic selective reduction of CO2 to CH4 in Cu-doped TiO2 catalysts exposed with different facets synthesized by a topological transformation from MIL-125 (Ti) precursors. The optimized round cake-like Cu/TiO2 photocatalyst mainly exposed with the (001) facet exhibited a high photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance with a CH4 yield of 40.36 μmol g-1 h-1 with a selectivity of 94.1%, which are significantly higher than those of TiO2 (001) (4.70 μmol g-1 h-1 and 52.6%, respectively), Cu/TiO2 (001 + 101) (18.95 μmol g-1 h-1 and 69.6%, respectively), and Cu/TiO2 (101) (14.73 μmol g-1 h-1 and 78.9%, respectively). The results of experimental and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the Cu doping dominating the promoted separation and migration efficiencies of photogenerated charges and the preferential adsorption on (001) facets synergistically contribute to the selective reduction of CO2 to CH4. This work highlights the significance of synergy between facet engineering and ion doping in the design of high-performance photocatalysts with respect to selective reduction of CO2 to multielectron products.

Abstract:The photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction is a sustainable route to the direct conversion of greenhouse gases into chemicals without additional energy consumption. Given the vast amount of greenhouse gas, numerous efforts have been devoted to developing inorganic photocatalysts, e.g., titanium dioxide (TiO2 ), due to their stability, low cost, and environmentally friendly properties. However, a more efficient TiO2 photocatalyst without noble metals is highly desirable for CO2 reduction, and it is both difficult and urgent to produce selectively valuable compounds. Here, a novel "single-atom site at the atomic step" strategy is developed by anchoring a single tungsten (W) atom site with oxygen-coordination at the intrinsic steps of classic TiO2 nanoparticles. The composition of active sites for CO2 reduction can be controlled by tuning the additional W5+ to form W5+ -O-Ti3+ sites, resulting in both significant CO2 reduction efficiency with 60.6 μmol g-1 h-1 and selectivity for methane (CH4 ) over carbon monoxide (CO), which exceeds those of pristine TiO2 by more than one order of magnitude. The mechanism relies on the accurate control of the single-atom sites at step with 22.8% coverage of surface sites and the subsequent excellent electron-hole separation along with the favorable adsorption-desorption of intermediates at the sites.
Tuning Lewis acid/base on the TiO2-supported Pd-CoOx interfaces to control the CO2 selective hydrogenation

Abstract:A highly attractive aim is to turn CO2 into useful chemicals selectively and efficiently, but it still retains great challenging to understand the relations between catalytic performances and interface properties. Here, we report an alternative solution to relate the catalytic activity with the strengths of Lewis acids and bases on the Pd-CoOx interfaces. CoO∙TiO2/TiO2 and CoOx/TiO2 possess the wide spectrum of Lewis acid/base centres, and give the low selectivity and conversion. The introduction of Pd can focus them on the intrinsic centres, and makes Pd-CoO∙TiO2/TiO2 and Pd-CoOx/TiO2 represent the ideal catalysis. With temperature-programmed desorptions of CO2, CO and NH3, it is evidenced that the catalytic hydrogenations of CO2 to CO, CH4 and CH3OH depend on the cooperation of the Lewis acidic/alkaline centres on the interfaces. The studies provide guidelines for rational design and synthesis of heterogeneous catalysts including but not limited to CO2 hydrogenation.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction into valuable fuel and chemical production has been regarded as a prospective strategy for tackling with the issues of the increasing of greenhouse gases and shortage of sustainable energy. A composite photocatalysis system employing a semiconductor enriched with oxygen vacancy and coupled with metallic cocatalyst can facilitate charge separation and transfer electrons. In this work, mesoporous TiO2 and titanium-based perovskite oxides (BaTiO3 and SrTiO3) nanoparticle assembly incorporated with abundant oxygen vacancy and copper particles have been successfully synthesized for CO2 photoreduction. As an example, the TiO2 decorated with different amounts of Cu particles has an impact on photocatalytic CO2 reduction into CH4 and CO. Particularly, the optimal TiO2/Cu-0.1 exhibits nearly 13.5 times higher CH4 yield (22.27 μmol g-1 h-1) than that of pristine TiO2 (1.65 μmol g-1 h-1). The as-obtained BaTiO3/Cu-0.1 and SrTiO3/Cu-0.1 also show enhanced CH4 yields towards photocatalytic CO2 reduction compared with pristine ones. Based on the temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and photo/electrochemical measurements, the co-embedding of Cu particles and abundant oxygen vacancy into the titanium-based oxides could promote CO2 adsorption capacity as well as separation and transfer of photoinduced electron-hole pairs, and finally result in efficient CO2 photoreduction upon the TiO2/Cu, SrTiO3/Cu, and BaTiO3/Cu composites.
