Abstract:The concept of phase change absorbents has been widely studied as a novel and low-energy consumption option for CO2 capture. This work screened diethylene glycol dimethyl ether (DGM) from 17 physical solvent species as a better phase change accelerator for absorbents of 2-(methylamino)ethanol (MAE)-physical solvent-H2O. Then, the optimized mass ratio of 30:49:21 for MAE-DGM-H2O solution was investigated with phase change behaviors, CO2 absorption–desorption performance, cyclic capacity, and energy consumption. The experimental results showed that the cyclic CO2 capacity reached 1.32 mol/L and the CO2-rich phase made up only 50.4 % of the total volume for the 30 wt%MAE-49 wt%DGM-21 wt%H2O, as well as its regenerative energy consumption was 40 % lower than that of 30 wt% monoethanolamine (MEA) solution. Also, the viscosity and surface tension gap of the CO2-rich phase and CO2-lean phase for the optimized absorbent were studied. It was observed that those gaps increase with the increasing mass ratio of DGM. In addition, the possible phase change mechanism was proposed by using the dipole moment values of components calculated by Gaussian (B3LYP/6-31G) coupled with 13C NMR spectra.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems Addressed by the Paper The paper aims to address the issue of high energy consumption during the carbon dioxide (CO₂) capture process. Specifically, traditional chemical absorption techniques, such as using 30 wt% monoethanolamine (MEA) solution, have proven effective in large-scale applications, but the high energy consumption during the regeneration process accounts for approximately 70% of the total operating cost. Therefore, the research team is dedicated to developing a low-energy, high-efficiency CO₂ absorbent. ### Main Contributions and Findings 1. **Screening Physical Solvents**: Diethylene glycol dimethyl ether (DGM) was selected from 17 different physical solvents as the optimal phase change accelerator for the 2-methylaminoethanol (MAE)-physical solvent-H₂O system. 2. **Optimizing Ratios**: Through experimental studies, the optimal mass ratio of the MAE-DGM-H₂O solution was determined to be 30:49:21. The solution at this ratio exhibited excellent CO₂ absorption-desorption performance, with a cyclic capacity of 1.32 mol/L, and its regeneration energy consumption was reduced by 40% compared to the 30 wt% MEA solution. 3. **Phase Change Behavior Analysis**: The phase change behavior, viscosity changes, and surface tension differences of the solution at different ratios were analyzed in detail. The results showed that with the increase in DGM content, the viscosity of the CO₂-rich phase significantly decreased, which is beneficial for improving desorption efficiency. 4. **Theoretical Calculations**: Theoretical calculations were conducted to evaluate the regeneration energy consumption at different ratios, confirming the effectiveness of the MAE-DGM-H₂O system. In summary, the paper proposes a novel low-energy CO₂ capture absorbent and experimentally verifies its superior performance.
