Abstract:Biodegradable poly(l-lactic acid)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA-PEG-PLLA) copolymers were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of l-lactide using dihydroxy PEG as the initiator. The effects of different PEG segments in the copolymers on the mechanical and permeative properties were investigated. It was determined that certain additions of PEG result in composition-dependent microphase separation structures with both PLLA and PEG blocks in the amorphous state. Amorphous PEGs with high CO2 affinity form gas passages that provide excellent CO2/O-2 permselectivity in such a nanostructure morphology. The gas permeability and permselectivity depend on the molecular weight and content of the PEG and are influenced by the temperature. Copolymers that have a higher molecular weight and content of PEG present better CO2 permeability at higher temperatures but provide better CO2/O-2 permselectivity at lower temperatures. In addition, the hydrophilic PEG segments improve the water vapor permeability of PLLA. Such biodegradable copolymers have great potential for use as fresh product packaging.

Abstract:In the past two decades, synthetic biodegradable and biobased polyesters have emerged as a sustainable alternative to traditional petroleum-derived polymers for diverse range of applications. Most of the synthetic biodegradable and biobased polyesters are semicrystalline. Some of these polymers can exist in a variety of polymorphs depending on the crystallization and processing conditions. In addition, blends or copolymers can exhibit cocrystallization behavior (such as stereocomplex, isomorphic, and isodimorphic crystallization). Polymorphic crystallization and cocrystallization of polymers plays an essential role not only in the scientific understanding of condensed matter structures of polymers, but also in the technological development and application of this new class of materials. This paper reviews the recent progress in the understanding of the polymorphic crystallization, co-crystallization, and structure-property relationship of synthetic biodegradable and biobased polyesters that has occurred within the past decade. Particular focus is on the structure, morphology, formation kinetics, and phase transition of crystals grown from biodegradable and biobased polyesters. Since the physical properties of polymers depend on their crystal structure and morphology, we also reviewed the relationships between the crystallization and processing conditions, crystalline structure and morphology, and physical properties (e.g., mechanical and biodegradability) of biodegradable and biobased polymorphic, cocrystallizable polyesters.
Synthesis and properties of high performance biobased liquid crystal polyester based on furandicarboxylic acid and sebacic acid

Abstract:In this study, a series of high-performance biobased liquid crystal copolyesters derived from 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (HNA), 4, 4ʹ-Dihydroxybiphenyl (BP), biobased 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) and sebacic acid (SeA) were successfully designed and prepared via “one-pot” melt polycondensation method. The addition of nonlinear and rigid FDCA units broke the regularity of the molecular chain but increased the chain rigidity, thus, endowing the unique thermal behavior, which the melting temperature decreased from 163.0 to 125.3 ℃, while the glass transition temperature decreased first and then increased slightly to 75.7 ℃ as increased the FDCA units to 7.5 mol%. Furthermore, DSC and XRD results showed that a small amount (1 mol%) of FDCA units did not impair crystallization ability of the copolyesters, whereas excess of FDCA hindered the molecular chain packing. The DMA results also demonstrated that the addition of FDCA restricts the chain motion and improves the rigidity of the copolyester as reflected by the higher storage modulus. The incorporation of nonlinear FDCA units lowered the initial degradation temperature slightly, but still exhibited enough thermal stability to be melt processed as compared with its relative low melting temperatures. The copolyesters exhibited a broad temperature range of nematic liquid crystal phase as well as shear thinning and viscous melt flow behavior, which were beneficial for its melt processing. The tensile strength and modulus of the injection molded splines were in range of 82.51–103.27 MPa and 2.05–2.72 GPa, respectively, which were much higher than the common biobased copolyesters such as PLA, PCL and other FDCA-containing polyesters. The increased modulus and decreased fracture strain of the copolyesters containing FDCA units further verified the high rigidity of the molecular chain. Moreover, the in-vitro cytotoxicity and water contact angle results proved that the copolyesters have good biocompatibility. The resulted copolyesters combined with excellent melt processing ability, mechanical property and good biocompatibility have great promising applications as biomedical and biodegradable materials.

Abstract:High performance biobased liquid crystal copolyesters derived from mesogenic monomer p‐hydroxybenzoic acid, 4,4′‐dihydroxybiphenyl and biomonomer suberic acid and 2,5‐furandicarboxylic acid were prepared via one‐pot melt polymerization method. High‐performance bio‐based liquid crystal copolyesters derived from 6‐hydroxy‐2‐naphthalenoic acid (HNA), 4,4′‐dihydroxybiphenyl (BP), bio‐based 2,5‐furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) and suberic acid (Sa) were successfully designed and prepared by "one‐pot" melt polycondensation method. The influence of small amount (1–5 mol%) of FDCA on structure and properties of the copolyesters were fully investigated. Aromatic heterocyclic FDCA units had unique effect on molecular structure and properties of the copolyesters ascribed to its high stiffness and nonlinearity. The glass transition temperature, melting temperature and initial decomposition temperature of the copolyester was improved. In addition, a small amount of FDCA addition was conducive to crystallization, which can be attributed to FDCA addition increasing the molecular chain interaction. The copolyesters exhibited a broad liquid crystal phase temperature range and viscous behavior, which provided great convenience for its melt processing. The tensile strength and modulus of injected splines were in range of 82.38 ~ 121.30 MPa and 2.68 ~ 3.95 GPa, respectively, which were much higher than those of PET, PLA and other biobased polyesters. The obtained copolyester has good thermal stability, melt processing ability, mechanical properties and hydrophilicity, which indicates that they have great potential for medical and packaging applications.

Abstract:ABSTRACTThe segmented polyurethanes synthesized from biodegradable polyesters are very promising and widely applicable because of their excellent physiochemical properties. Poly(propylene fumarate) (PPF), a kind of linear aliphatic unsaturated and biodegradable polyesters, has been well recognized in biomedical applications. Herein novel polyurethanes (PPFUs) were synthesized based on the PPF‐diol, diisocyanates such as 1,6‐diisocyanatohexane, l‐lysine diisocyanate, and dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate, and chain extenders such as 1,4‐butylene glycol and l‐lysine methyl ester hydrochloride (Lys‐OMe·2HCl). By varying the types of diisocyanates, and chain extenders, and the proportion of hard segments, the PPFUs with tailored properties such as mechanical strength and degradation rate were easily obtained. The synthesized PPFUs had an amorphous structure and slight phase separation with strong hydrogen bonding between the soft segments and the hard segments. The elongation of PPFU elastomers reached over 400% with a slow deformation‐recovery ability. The PPFUs were more sensitive to alkaline (5 M, NaOH) hydrolysis than acid (2 M, HCl) and oxidative (30 vol.%, H2O2) erosion. The tensile strength, deformation‐recovery ability, and glass transition temperature of the PPFUs were improved with the increase of hard segment proportion, while the degradation rate was opposite because of the faster degradation of the soft segments. In vitro culture of smooth muscle cells in the extractant of the PPFUs or on the PPFUs film surface revealed low cytotoxicity and good cytocompatibility in terms of cell viability, adhesion, and proliferation. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Utilizing bio-based resources is an essential part of the sustainable development of plastics. Meanwhile, the end-of-life options of this bio-based plastic must be considered to avoid contributing to the accumulation of plastic waste. To address the problem of end-of-life plastics and the trade-off between chemical closed-loop recycling and high-performance, targeted selection of monomers and a method for the preparation of high-performance linear polyesters that can be rapidly closed-loop recycling without the addition of additional organic solvents under mild conditions are necessary. Herein, we report strategies for synchronously constructing chemical closed-loop and achieving high performance, by linear furan-based poly(butylene furandicarboxylate-diethylene glycol) (PBDyF), synthesized by dimethyl 2,5-furandicarboxylate, diethylene glycol (DEG) and 1,4-butanediol (BDO). Adjusting the ratio of ethyleneoxyethylene and butylene groups can endow PBDyF with excellent tensile strength (77.8 MPa), puncture resistances properties (129.7 N/mm), and barrier properties (CO2 0.0120 barrer, O2 0.0103 barrer) for PBD80F. Processing can be performed by injection moulding, and additive manufacturing, such as 3D printing. Moreover, we construct a rapid chemical-solvolysis strategy in mild conditions without producing other organic waste by the DEG/BDO to obtain recycled 2,5-furandicarboxylate, DEG, and BDO from PBDyF. Utilizing the differences in solubility and boiling point, the recycled chemicals can be separated. Repolymerized polyester (rPBDyF) still maintains high performance compared with PBDyF. In our approach, the high-performance chemical-recyclable copolyester, exhibiting greatly potential films or 3D printing applications, provides a state-of-art way for solving the trade-off problem between chemical-recycling and high performance of previous linear polyesters, further supports sustainable closed-loop chemistry.

Abstract:A series of liquid crystalline copolyesters containing both horizontal and lateral rods in main chain were synthesized through solution polymerization of 2,5-bis(4-alkoxy benzoyloxy)hydroquinone. 4,4'-dihydroxy-x,omega-dipheanoxydecane These copolyesters were soluble in common organic solvents, showed thermotropic nematic liquid crystallinity that can be easily obtained at room temperature, thereby making them processable at relatively low temperatures in their high-ordered liquid crystalline states where they are thermally stable. Their thermal transitions can be well adjusted by judiciously controlling the attachment content of lateral rods, and their thermal behaviors were well examined. All synthesized polymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (CPC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM) and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). Abstract:In this work, a kind of side chain liquid crystalline poly(urethane-acrylate)s was synthesized by free polymerization based on self-made liquid crystalline monomers, and a series of liquid crystalline polyurethane/shape memory polyurethane composite membranes were prepared by electrospinning. The synthesized liquid crystalline poly(urethane-acrylate)s have excellent thermal stability. Due to the regular arrangement of azobenzene on the side chains, polymers can rapidly undergo a photoinduced transition from trans-isomerism to cis-isomerism in THF solution and restore reversible configurational changes under visible light. The composite membranes prepared by electrospinning can also undergo photoinduced deformation within 6 s, and the deformation slowly returns under visible light. Meanwhile, the composites have shape memory, and after deformation caused by stretching, the membranes can quickly recover their original shape under thermal stimulation. These results indicate that the composites have triple response performances of photoinduced deformation, photo-, and thermal recovery.

Abstract:Development of biodegradable polymer films is essential for sustainable energy conservation and ecological protection. In this work, to improve the processability and toughness of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) films, poly(lactide-co-caprolactone) (PLCL) segments were introduced into poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA)/poly(D-lactic acid) (PDLA) chains via chain branching reactions during reactive processing, and fully biodegradable/flexible PLLA/D-PLCL block polymer with long-chain branches and stereocomplex (SC) crystalline structure was prepared. Compared with neat PLLA, PLLA/D-PLCL exhibited much higher complex viscosity/storage modulus, lower tanδ values in terminal region and obvious strain-hardening behavior. Through biaxial drawing, PLLA/D-PLCL films were prepared, which showed improved uniformity and non-preferred orientation. With increasing draw ratio, the total crystallinity (Xc) and Xc for SC crystal both increased. By introduction of PDLA, the two phases of PLLA and PLCL penetrated and entangled with each other, and the phase structure transformed from "sea-island" structure to "co-continuous network" structure, which was beneficial for exerting the toughening effect of flexible PLCL molecules on PLA matrix. The tensile strength and elongation at break of PLLA/D-PLCL films increased from 51.87 MPa and 28.22 % of neat PLLA film to 70.82 MPa and 148.28 %. This work provided a new strategy for developing fully biodegradable polymer films with high performance.
Synthesis and Structure–Property Relationships of Novel High Molecular Weight Fully Biobased 2,5-Thiophenedicarboxylic Acid-Based Polyesters

Abstract:High molecular weight fully biobased poly(propylene succinate-co-2,5-thiophenedicarboxylate) (PPSTF) random copolyesters based on the emerging biobased aromatic diacid, 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid (TFDCA), in full composition range were synthesized via melt polycondensation. Their crystallization behavior, thermal-mechanical, gas barrier, and biodegradable properties were systematically investigated. A certain level of comonomer cocrystallization was evidenced by XRD, and PTF units had stronger crystallization competitive capability compared to PS units due to the higher stiffness of TFDCA units. These copolyesters exhibited excellent thermal stability, and mechanical properties can be easily controlled by tuning the varied ratio of flexible to rigid segments. Gas barrier properties were studied from both theoretically calculated and experimental perspectives, and the copolyesters even with 50 mol % PS units still showed superior gas permeation resistance. The selected lipase from Aspergillus oryzae can degrade the copolyesters with up to 60 mol % PTF units. The nonbiodegradable-biodegradable transition was found to occur at the number-average sequence length of aromatic PTF units as low as about 3. Interestingly, when compared with their terephthalic acid-based (TA-based) and 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid-based (FDCA-based) analogues with the same content of aromatic units, the apparent degradation rate constant (k) and half period (t1/2) of PPSTF60 were actually between them. These findings offer much promise for the application of polyesters containing odd-carbon diol monomers in green packaging and other fields.

Abstract:A series of novel degradable triarm poly(propylene oxide)-block-polylactide (PPO-b-PLA) copolymers was synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of L-lactide (LLA) or ox-lactide (DLLA) using low unsaturated PPO triols as macromolecular initiator. The chemical structures of the resulting copolymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H-1-NMR) spectroscopy. Combination of FTIR, GPC, and NMR results confirmed the formation of PPO-b-PLA copolymers. One glass transition was observed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), suggesting good miscibility between PPO and PLA segments in the copolymers. DSC and wide-angle X-ray diffraction demonstrated that PPO-b-PLLA copolymers were semicrystalline materials, and the crystallinity increased with increasing the PLLA content. In contrast, PPO-b-PDLLA copolymers were totally amorphous. The PPO-b-PLA copolymers exhibited improved thermal stability when compared with PPO polyols according to thermogravimetric analysis. The thermal degradation behavior of the copolymers depended on the composition. Polyurethane foams were prepared by crosslinking PPO and PPO-b-PLA copolymers using isocyanate. Alkaline degradation of the foams was investigated in 10 wt/vol NaOH at 80 degrees C. The results show that the novel PPO-b-PLA copolymers could be promising as degradable polymeric materials. Effective Synthesis Route for Linear and Cross-Linked Biodegradable Polyesters Using Aliphatic Meldrum’s Acid Derivatives As Monomers

Abstract:On the basis of the reaction between ketene and alcohol groups to result in an ester linkage and Meldrum’s acid as an effective precursor of ketene group, a bifunctional aliphatic Meldrum’s acid compound (BisMA) is synthesized and used as a monomer to react with ethylene glycol and glycerol for the preparation of linear and cross-linked aliphatic polyesters, respectively. A 62 and 35 wt % of biodegradation fraction have been recorded on the linear and cross-linked aliphatic polyesters after an 8 week biodegradation test, respectively, to demonstrate the good biodegradability of the synthesized polyesters. In addition to conventional linear biodegradable polyesters, this synthetic route also provides a new and convenient method for preparation of cross-linked biodegradable polyesters. The types of the required monomers and reaction methods for preparation of the cross-linked biodegradable polyesters are similar to those used for conventional thermosetting resins. An integration of biodegradable polymers and thermosetting resins in polymer chemistry has been demonstrated.
Simultaneously Enhanced Chain Flexibility, Three Dimensional Printability, and Reduction of Shrinkage Stress in Biodegradable and Photocurable Multiblock Copolymers

Abstract:A library of biodegradable and photocurable poly (propylene fumarate)-co-poly(trimethylene carbonate) (PPF-co-PTMC) multiblock copolymers encompassing the entire composition range and various block lengths has been designed and synthesized. By combining experiments and atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, we reveal the effects of chain architectures such as composition and block lengths on the thermal, rheological, and printing properties of these copolymers. The introduction of flexible PTMC blocks, which are found to be highly miscible with PPF blocks, into the unentangled copolymer backbone dramatically expedites chain relaxation, lowers the activation energy, and enhances the solubility in toluene. The chain flexibility of the copolymers is positively correlated with the composition of PTMC, while the block length of either PPF or PTMC affects little. Thus, lower values in glass transition temperature Tg, zero-shear viscosity eta 0, printing speed, and shrinkage stress in photocuring are consistently seen at higher compositions of PTMC. Photocurable PPF-co-PTMCs can be printed into high-precision 3D objects. This study provides a series of novel biopolymers and also a guideline to design photocurable polymers used in biomedical implants.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of a new series of liquid crystalline polymers, poly(dicycloalkyl vinylterephthalate)s, are reported. The basic building blocks of these polymers are not mesogenic by themselves. However, very stable mesophases can be generated by self-assembly of the polymer molecules. This approach suggests a novel design strategy of liquid crystalline polymers with flexible and apolar building blocks.

Abstract:A synthetic biopolymer derived from furandicarboxylic acid monomer and hydroxyethyl-terminated poly(ether sulfone) is presented. The synthesis involves 4,4'-dichlorodiphenyl sulfone and 4,4-dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone, resulting in poly(butylene furandicarboxylate)-poly(ether sulfone) copolyesters (PBFES) through melt polycondensation with titanium-catalyzed polymerization. This facile method yields segmented polyesters incorporating polysulfone, creating a versatile group of high-temperature thermoplastics with adjustable thermomechanical properties. The PBFES copolyesters demonstrate an impressive tensile modulus of 2830 MPa and a tensile strength of 84 MPa for PBFES55. Additionally, the poly(ether sulfone) unit imparts a relatively high glass transition temperature (<i>T</i><sub>g</sub>), ranging from 36.6 °C for poly(butylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) to 112.3 °C for PBFES62. Moreover, the complete amorphous film of PBFES exhibits excellent transparency and solvent resistance, making it suitable for applications, such as food packaging materials.

Abstract:A series of high‐value bio‐based copoyesters were prepared from a kind of sustainable raw material, 2,5‐furandicarboxylic acid. To improve the comprehensive properties of polybutylene furandicarboxylate (PBF), 2,5‐furandicarboxylic acid (2,5‐FDCA), and aliphatic chain diol 1,8‐octanediol and 1,4‐butanediol were used as monomers to synthesize a series of bio‐based polybutylene glycol‐octanediol 2,5‐furandicarboxylate (PBOF). The results showed that the chemical composition of PBOF could be controlled through the molar ratio of monomers. Compared with PBF, as the proportion of octanediol segments gradually increased, PBOF could gradually transform from semi‐crystalline thermoplastic to amorphous form, and the glass transition temperature (Tg) gradually decreased. The crystallization ability reduced but a part of the crystal area was still retained. The copolyesters still has a decomposition temperature above 370°C, indicating excellent thermal stability. The introduction of the octanediol segment significantly improved the tensile mechanical properties and flexibility of the POBF copolyester. These meet the requirements for the preparation of bio‐based engineering plastics. The water absorption rate of PBOF showed that it may have certain degradable potential. PBOF copolyesters have potential application prospects in bio‐based medical plastics and biodegradable packaging polymer materials after copolymerization modification.

Hydrogen-Bonded Thermostable Liquid Crystalline Complex Formed by Biodegradable Polymer and Amphiphilic Molecules

Abstract:We report a simple method to prepare biodegradable polymer-amphiphile complexes by solution mixing of poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) with octadecanoic acid (OA). The complexes were characterized by combination of thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), polarizing optical microscopy (POM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Compared with the amorphous PPC copolymer, the PPC-OA-x complexes show excellent thermal stability and form thermotropic liquid crystalline state without rigid mesogenic units. The corresponding mechanism has been proposed to elucidate the observed phenomena. The stabilization effect induced by hydrogen-bonding interactions between PPC and OA molecules is responsible for the thermostability and formation of liquid crystalline state. The present findings may extend the applications of such biodegradable aliphatic polycarbonate by improving its glass transition temperature and thermoplastic processability.
Bio-based poly(butylene diglycolate-co-furandicarboxylate) copolyesters with balanced mechanical, barrier and biodegradable properties: A prospective substitute for PBAT

Abstract:Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) is a flexible aliphatic/aromatic copolyester commercialized for degradable plastics, while the slow degradation rates and poor barrier properties limit its applications. Consequently, it is highly desirable to develop materials with faster degradation rates and enhanced barrier properties. Here, we synthesized poly(butylene diglycolate-co-furandicarboxylate) (PBDF) copolyesters by transesterification and melt polycondensation. The NMR spectra confirmed their structure and composition. Besides, the thermal, mechanical, permeable and degradable properties were characterized thoroughly. It was found that the properties were dependent on chemical composition and crystallinity. Actually, the introduction of diglycolic acid (DGA) comonomer hinders the crystallization and all the copolyesters appear as semicrystalline polyesters except for PBDF80. Among them, PBDF40 possesses outstanding mechanical properties with an elastic modulus of 165 MPa, tensile strengths of 54 MPa, and elongations of break of 654%. Moreover, the CO2 and O2 barrier properties of PBDF40 are 68.6 and 45.9 times higher than those of PBAT. PBDFs also exhibit accelerated rates in hydrolysis and composting degradation, which could be attributed to the enhanced hydrophilicity due to the electronegativity of ether-oxygen atoms in DGA. In particular, the mass loss of PBDF40 reaches 46% and 42% after 28 days of CALB enzymatic degradation and 8 weeks of compost degradation, respectively. These results highlight that the synthesized polyesters, especially PBDF40, demonstrate potential application in food packaging.
