Abstract:This study investigates the tribological performance of MCrAlY coatings applied on AISI 304 stainless steel substrate through the flame spray process. The assessment is conducted using a ball-on-disk tribometer with an Al 2 O 3 counterface at three intermediate temperatures. Characterization techniques such as XRD, SEM, and EDS microanalysis are employed to analyze the microstructure and tribological behavior of the MCrAlY coatings. Experimental results demonstrate a notable reduction in both the wear rate and friction coefficient of the MCrAlY coatings at elevated temperatures for all materials tested. The friction coefficient of the NiCoCrAlY coating decreases by approximately 58% and 65% at 350°C and 500°C, respectively. Likewise, the CoNiCrAlY coating exhibits a decrease in friction coefficient of around 59% and 32% at 350°C and 500°C, respectively. In terms of wear rates, the NiCoCrAlY coating demonstrates a decrease of 38% and 55% at the two tested temperatures, while the CoNiCrAlY coating exhibits a decrease of 28% and 41%, respectively. Based on these findings, the CoNiCrAlY coating is recommended for high-temperature applications because of its superior tribological performance compared to the NiCoCrAlY coating. The flame spray applied MCrAlY coatings demonstrate cost-effective alternatives to expensive coatings for non-critical and anti-friction applications, up to 500°C as intermediate temperature.
