Abstract:Silver and copper nanowires have been synthesized using a scalable method of AC electrodeposition into porous aluminum oxide templates, which produces gram quantities of metal nanowires ca. 25 nm in diameter and up to 5 and 10 mu m in length for Ag and Cu, respectively. The nanowires have been used to prepare polystyrene nanocomposites by solution processing. Electrical resistivity measurements performed on polymer nanocomposites containing different volume fractions of metal indicate that low percolation thresholds of nanowires are attained between compositions of 0.25 and 0.75 vol %.

Abstract:Ag/NiO composite nanofibers have been synthesized and assembled by electrospinning. The prepared nanofibers have a high electrical conductivity of 0.5 × 105 S/cm. Because of its high conductivity and simple synthetic method, electrospun Ag/NiO nanofiber can be potentially used as interconnects for future nanoelectronic devices, as well as highly sensitive chemical sensors.

Abstract:A novel, simple and efficient procedure was developed to electrodeposit one-dimensional Ag nanowires from reverse hexagonal liquid crystalline phases by using their one-dimensional cylindrical aqueous microdomains as space-confined reactors. Using this soft-template approach, flexible Ag nanowire arrays with wire diameter of 15-30 nm, high aspect ratio over 1000, and high wire densities over 10 11 wires/cm 2 were obtained. The Ag nanowire arrays can be easily collected by simply washing. The nanowires obtained can be used either in high-density bundle form or as single wires after dispersion by untrasonication.

Abstract:Sulfated holocellulose nanofibers (SHCNFs) were effectively manufactured and employed as a dispersant for silver nanowires (Ag-NWs) to prepare a novel SHCNF/Ag-NW dispersion. SHCNF dispersions possessed extremely high electronegativity (−64.5 mV), which resulted the uniform dispersion of Ag-NWs. Meanwhile, the high elasticity and shear thinning capabilities of SHCNF/Ag-NW dispersions render them promising alternatives in the field of conductive inks. As functional materials fabricated from SHCNF/Ag-NW dispersions, the film showed extremely high conductivity (6000 S/cm) and excellent tensile strength (106 MPa), whereas aerogels as pressure-sensitive sensors exhibited outstanding repeatability, stability, and high sensitivity (75% resistance changes).

Abstract:Silver nanowires (AgNWs)/conducting polymers based nanocomposites are advanced materials for electrical conductive applications. AgNWs have high electrical conductivity, high surface area and high aspect ratio, which are important for the preparation of AgNWs/conducting polymer nanocomposites by using particularly small amounts of AgNWs as conductive filler. The resultant nanocomposite transparent conductive electrodes play a key role in many optoelectronic devices such as touch screen, liquid crystal display, and solar cell. Thus, we carefully selected such published data which is associated with AgNWs/conducting polymers based nanocomposites. This paper gives a comprehensive review on recent development in the synthetic techniques of AgNWs, factors affecting the growth of AgNWs and their applications in conducting polymer nanocomposites. In addition, the effect of various additives (inorganic anions, transition metal cations and molecular species) on size, shape and aspect ratio (length:diameter) of AgNWs has been described in detail. Herein, we also focused on various thin film deposition techniques, for the surface modification of AgNWs with conducting polymers for useful applications such as in touch screen, liquid crystal display and solar cell.

Abstract:Sol-gel derived noble-metal-silica nanocomposites are very useful in many applications. Due to relatively low price, higher conductivity, and higher chemical stability of silver (Ag) compared with copper (Cu), Ag-silica has gained much more research interest. However, it remains a significant challenge to realize high loading of Ag content in sol-gel Ag-silica composite with high structural controllability and nanoparticles' dispersity. Different from previous works by using multifunctional silicon alkoxide to anchor metal ions, here we report the synthesis of Ag-silica nanocomposite with high loading of Ag nanoparticles by employing acetonitrile bi-functionally as solvent and metal ions stabilizer. The electrical conductivity of the Ag-silica nanocomposite reached higher than 6800 S/cm. In addition, the Ag-silica nanocomposite could simultaneously possess high electrical conductivity and positive conductivity-temperature coefficient by properly controlling the loading content of Ag. Such behavior is potentially advantageous for high-temperature devices (like phosphoric acid fuel cells) and inhibiting the thermal-induced increase of devices' internal resistance. The strategy proposed here is also compatible with block-copolymer directed self-assembly of mesoporous material, spin-coating of film and electrospinning of nanofiber, making it more charming in various practical applications. Abstract:An ecofriendly process has been successfully developed to synthesize the polycrystalline silver nanopolyhedrons with a high yield at large scale. By using tannic acid in the presence of poly (vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP), high quality silver nanopolyhedrons were obtained in an aqueous one-pot reaction without any templates or auxiliaries. The film made from the silver nanostructures exhibits an electrical conductivity higher than 10 4 S/cm on both rigid and flexible substrates. The supreme mechanical strength of this silver film recommends its wide application in printing and flexible electronics.

Abstract:Noble-metal-coated carbon-based nanoparticles, when used as electrically conductive fillers, have the potential to provide excellent conductivity without the high weight and cost normally associated with metals such as silver and gold. To this effect, many attempts were made to deposit uniform metallic layers on core nanoparticles with an emphasis on silver for its high conductivity. The results so far were disheartening with the metal morphology being better described as a decoration than a coating with small effects on the electrical conductivity of the bulk particles. We tackled in this work the specific problem of electroless deposition of silver on carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with the investigation of every step of the process. We performed X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM, SEM), zeta potential, and electrical conductivity measurements to identify a repeatable, reliable set of parameters allowing for a uniform and fully connected silver deposition on the surface of the CNFs. The bulk particles' specific electrical conductivity (conductivity per unit mass) undergoes a more than 10-fold increase during the deposition, reaching 2500 S·cm<sup>2</sup>/g, which indicates that the added metal mass participates efficiently to the conduction network. The particles keep their high aspect ratio through the process, which enables a percolated conduction network at very low volume loadings in a composite. No byproducts are produced during the reaction so the particles do not have to be sorted or purified and can be used as produced after the short ∼15 min reaction time. The particles might be an interesting replacement to conventional fillers in isotropic conductive adhesives, as a conductive network is obtained at a much lower loading. They might also serve as electrically conductive fillers in composites where a high conductivity is needed, such as lightning strike protection systems, or as high surface area silver electrodes.

Abstract:Silver nanowires synthesized via microwave‐assisted microfluidic methods achieve the highest reported space‐time yield of 1.2 × 104 g (h·m3)−1. This innovative synthesis is complemented by a new screening method employing multi‐objective Bayesian optimization. The resulting CNFs/AgNWs filaments demonstrate excellent electrical and mechanical properties with electrical conductivity and mechanical strength up to 8.35 × 105 S m−1 and 186 MPa. Composite filaments are of considerable interest in research due to their exceptional performance characteristics and broad applicability. In this study, highly electrically conductive composite filaments comprising cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) and silver nanowires (AgNWs) are carefully prepared, accompanied by the proposition of an integrated microwave‐microfluidic synthesis method for AgNWs. The proposed reaction system exhibits a remarkable capability for swift AgNW synthesis, with a space‐time yield of 1.2 × 104 g (h·m3)−1, approximately five times superior to that achievable through conventional batch reactor methodologies. The microwave‐assisted microfluidic synthesis of AgNWs introduces a novel aspect to the extensive research on 1D nanomaterials. The design of experiments and multi‐objective Bayesian optimization are integrated iteratively to converge toward the global optimum, aiming to enhance screening efficiency and achieve a balanced outcome by maximizing aspect ratio and minimizing size for AgNWs. The AgNWs synthesized under optimal conditions has a diameter of ≈50.4 nm and an aspect ratio of ≈555. Subsequently, they are integrated into composite filaments with CNF, resulting in electrical conductivity and tensile strength of the composite filaments at values of 8.35 × 105 S m−1 and 186 MPa, respectively, surpassing those reported in existing literature for other analogous materials.

Abstract:Recent advances in the synthesis of silver nanowires (AgNWs), including polyol, template, wet chemical, and photoreduction methods, are discussed. Special attention is afforded to the applications of AgNW composites, including energy storage and optoelectronics, sensors, electromagnetic interference shielding and absorbing materials, nanogenerators, and other applications (e.g., antibacterial packaging, medical dressing, environmental remediation, and electrothermal and electrochromic devices).Silver nanowires (AgNWs) have gained increased interest as highly conductive and transparent nanomaterials with numerous applications across various fields. Owing to their unique properties (e.g., optical transparency, electrical conductivity, mechanical characteristics, and ease of processing), AgNWs have been extensively investigated for application in light‐emitting diodes, solar cells, electrocatalysis, liquid crystal displays, wearable electronic devices, flexible nanosensors, and supercapacitors. In this review, recent advances in the synthesis of AgNWs (including the polyol, template, wet chemical, and photoreduction methods) are discussed, with a focus on their advantages and disadvantages in terms of AgNW structural regulation. Furthermore, the advantages and applications of AgNW composites, are comprehensively reviewed and analyzed, with a focus on energy storage and optoelectronics, sensors, electromagnetic interference shielding and absorbing materials, nanogenerators, and other applications. The prospects and challenges of AgNW composites in emerging applications are also proposed.

Abstract:Silver nanowires were prepared by polyol process and doped to the system containing conventional micro-scaled sphere or flake silver particles. It is found that the conductance of doped system is much better than the undoped system with the same quantity silver. A plausible mechanism is described as that these nanowires are favor to act as bridges to establish perfect linkage among particles, and the chance of contact and contact area become more than the cases without wires. This development will be meaningful for the preparation of advanced electrically conductive adhesive (ECA) with high conductivity and good adhesive strength.
Regulation of Multidimensional Silver Nanostructures for High-Performance Composite Conductive Adhesives

Abstract:Electrically conductive adhesives (ECAs) are widely used in electronics and silver-based ECA is one of the most typical representatives. In this work, a trinary silver-based filler strategy was proposed to achieve ECAs with high conductivity and low silver content, where silver fractal flowers (Ag-FWs) were used to set up the conductive framework and silver nanowires (Ag-NWs) and silver nanoflakes (Ag-NFs) were added to connect the separated domains and fill the small gaps, respectively. The ECAs reached a low electrical resistivity of 6.0 x 10(-5) Omega cm and high adhesion strength of 13.5 MPa when the addition of Ag-FWs, Ag-NWs and Ag-NFs were 50 wt%, 7.5 wt % and 2.5 wt%, respectively, superior to those reported ECAs of 80 wt% silver loading. Besides, the ECA circuit fabricated by 3D printer demonstrated good electrical conductivity and resistance stability. The preparation idea of ECAs brings novel opportunities for the development of the electronic packaging industries.
Highly Conductive Networks of Silver Nanosheets

Abstract:Although printed networks of semiconducting nanosheets have found success in a range of applications, conductive nanosheet networks are limited by low conductivities (<106 S m-1 ). Here, dispersions of silver nanosheets (AgNS) that can be printed into highly conductive networks are described. Using a commercial thermal inkjet printer, AgNS patterns with unannealed conductivities of up to (6.0 ± 1.1) × 106 S m-1 are printed. These networks can form electromagnetic interference shields with record shielding effectiveness of >60 dB in the microwave region at thicknesses <200 nm. High resolution patterns with line widths down to 10 µm are also printed using an aerosol-jet printer which, when annealed at 200 °C, display conductivity >107 S m-1 . Unlike conventional Ag-nanoparticle inks, the 2D geometry of AgNS yields smooth, short-free interfaces between electrode and active layer when used as the top electrode in vertical nanosheet heterostructures. This shows that all-printed vertical heterostructures of AgNS/WS2 /AgNS, where the top electrode is a mesh grid, function as photodetectors demonstrating that such structures can be used in optoelectronic applications that usually require transparent conductors.

Abstract:Herein, a facile synthesis approach for silver nanoparticles is disclosed through reduction action without the need for a peristaltic pump or inert gas shielding has been disclosed. Subsequent electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Ultraviolet–Visible spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were conducted to characterize the optimized nanoparticles with an average grain size of 29.9 nm. Employing a designed ink containing 35 wt% silver, four types of inks by direct writing showed different printability on the glass surface and conductive behavior. A resistivity value as low as 4.7 × 10 −7 Ω m was achieved following basic traditional sintering process at 250 °C for 30 min, along with stable electrical conductivity under repeated bending, suitable for bending in flexible electronic devices. Finally, molecular dynamics simulation was applied to gain a deeper understanding of the melting and sintering processes of Ag nanoparticles during the atomic-level bonding.

Abstract:Among recent advances in electronic packaging technologies, electrically conductive adhesives (ECAs) attract most researchers’ attention, as they are environment-friendly and simple to apply. ECAs also have a lower operating temperature and volume resistivity compared with conventional electronic conductive adhesives. In ECAs, the conducting fillers play a significant role in improving conductivity and strength. In this work, as filler additives, the silver nanowires/graphene nanocomposites (AgNWs-GNs) were successfully fabricated via a facile self-assembly method. The characteristics of the as-prepared nanocomposites were evaluated by FTIR (Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy), XRD (X-ray Diffraction), XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), TEM (Transmission electron microscope) and Raman tests, demonstrating a successful synthesis process. Different amounts of AgNWs-GNs were used as additives in micron flake silver filler, and the effects of AgNWs-GNs on the properties of ECAs were studied. The results suggested that the as-synthesized composites can significantly improve the electrical conductivity and shear strength of ECAs. With 0.8% AgNWs/GNs (AgNWs to GO (Graphite oxide) mass ratio is 4:1), the ECAs have the lowest volume resistivity of 9.31 × 10−5 Ω·cm (95.4% lower than the blank sample without fillers), while with 0.6% AgNWs/GNs (AgNWs to GO mass ratio is 6:1), the ECAs reach the highest shear strength of 14.3 MPa (68.2% higher than the blank sample).

Abstract:Silver nanowire (AgNW) networks are promising candidates to replace indium-tin-oxide (ITO) as transparent conductors. However, complicated treatments are often required to fuse crossed AgNWs to achieve low resistance and good substrate adhesion. In this work, we demonstrate a simple and effective solution method to achieve highly conductive AgNW composite films with excellent optical transparency and mechanical properties. These properties are achieved via sequentially applying TiO(2) sol-gel and PEDOT:PSS solution to treat the AgNW film. TiO(2) solution volume shrinkage and the capillary force induced by solvent evaporation result in tighter contact between crossed AgNWs and improved film conductivity. The PEDOT:PSS coating acts as a protecting layer to achieve strong adhesion. Organic photovoltaic devices based on the AgNW-TiO(2)-PEDOT:PSS transparent conductor have shown comparable performance to those based on commercial ITO substrates.

Abstract:This review concentrates on the various chemical routes for synthesis of silver nanowires by soft solution methods, and also the production of gold nanotubes and Pt nanotubes from different templates. After a comprehensive comparison between the developed methods, it is concluded that the soft solution method has obvious advantages and is the most promising route for the mass production of silver nanowires. Herein its recent development is generalized into two groups: surfactant-assisted soft chemistry method and soft template method of which advantages and disadvantages will be discussed elaborately and separately. In addition, the synthesis of Au and Pt nanotubes from resultant silver nanowires, although less researched than other methods, is considered as the most convenient and facile route among the templated methods. Due to their high thermal and electrical conductivities, these metal nanomaterials are excellent candidates for the conductive filler in composite adhesive. Especially for one-dimensional metal nanostructures, they show great promise in the improvement of current conductive adhesive.
Composites Made of Carbon Nanotubes and Silver Nanoparticles for Conductive Aerosol-Jet Deposition Ink: The Double-Edged Sword of Functionalization

Abstract:Optimizing conductive ink for Direct-Write Additive Manufacturing, this work explores the effect of carboxylic functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes on their affinity to silver nanoparticles deposited on them. We show a correlation between functionalization and the size of the resulted NPs: the diameter of the silver NPs deposited on pristine CNTs (∼5 nm diameter) is third of that of NPs deposited on functionalized CNTs (∼15 nm). Electrical characterization of the silver-decorated CNT-based ink shows a more significant improvement in conductivity of the functionalized CNTs-decorated with silver compared to the pristine one (maximal ∼40 and ∼20% increase in conductivity over their undecorated counterpart, respectively). However, CNT functionalization severely damages the conductivity of the CNTs themselves, resulting in a much lower conductivity. This “double-edged sword” effect of functionalization results in the highest absolute specific conductivity (3.79 × 10 3 S/m) achieved by decorating pristine CNTs with 25 wt% of silver. Nevertheless, the observed enhanced conductivity and the ability to control the composite’s morphology by functionalization allow fine-tuning of morphology-based properties, such as surface enhanced Raman scattering and optimization of the ink for sensing applications.
