Abstract:Although injection machines have been used extensively in industry, only extruder research has been emphasized. A model of the melt conveying section of injectors was established and analysed by the finite element software. And the velocity distribution in the vertical section as well as the output of the injection machine was derived. Based on the results above, the geometrical parameters of the metering section of the screw were optimized to obtain maximum output and minimum energy consumption. The results, about φ38 screws, demonstrated that the performance of the optimized screw is better than that of the standard screw.

Abstract:This paper is a study on the mechanical behavior of grade 8.8 and 10.9 small-sized (M14-M20) bolts with the thread into the bolt hole. A total of eighty specimens with different thread depth, surface treatment, bolt diameter, and bolt strength grade were subjected to static loading tests. The effects of different parameters on the properties of specimens such as ultimate bearing capacity, initial slip load, ductility, and initial stiffness were systematically investigated. It was demonstrated that the typical failure mode is bolt shear failure. The increase in thread depth causes the ultimate bearing capacity of bolted connections to decrease, and other design parameters also have effects on the ultimate bearing capacity. The ultimate bearing capacity of bolted connections with shot-blasted surfaces is greater than that of bolted connections with wire-brushed surfaces. Moreover, bolted connections with a greater thread depth have a lower yield strength. The method of contact surface treatment, bolt diameter, and strength grade also affect the yield load of bolted connections. The initial stiffness does not change much with the increase of the thread depth. In addition, the increase in thread depth decreases the ductility coefficient and ultimate displacement, which has a negative effect on deformation performance, and the ductility coefficient of bolted connections also decreases with the increase in bolt grade. Finally, based on the test results, a design formula for predicting the ultimate bearing capacity was proposed, and the calculation results match the experimental results well. The difference in ultimate bearing capacity due to thread depth can be well described by the formula.
Three-dimensional Finite Element Analysis of the Mechanical Properties of Helical Thread Connection

Abstract:Conventional analytical and numerical methods for the mechanical properties of helical threads are relied on many assumptions and approximations and thus hardly yield satisfied results. A parameterized 3D finite element model of bolted joints with real helical thread geometry is established and meshed with refined hexahedral elements. The Von Mises plasticity criterion, kinematic hardening rule of materials and interfacial contacts are employed to make it possible for the suggested model be able to approach real assembly conditions. Then, the mechanical properties of bolted joints with different thread pitches, thread numbers and modular ratios are investigated, including the contact pressure distribution at joint interfaces, the axial load distribution and stress concentration in screw threads during the loading and unloading process. Simulation results indicate that the load distribution in screw threads produced by the suggested model agrees well the results from CHEN’s photoelastic tests. In addition, an interesting phenomenon is found that tightening the bolt with a large preload first and then adjusting the clamping force by unloading can make the load distribution more uniform and reduce the maximum residual equivalent stress in thread roots by up to 40%. This research provides a simple and practical approach to constructing the 3D finite element model and predicting the mechanical properties of helical thread connection.

Abstract:Threaded fasteners are widely used in mechanical structures largely because the disassembly for maintenance is easy and low cost. However, vibration-induced loosening due to dynamic loading has remained problematic over the past six decades. In this report, we investigated the mechanisms of the tightening process and the loosening process due to shear loading using the framework of the three-dimensional finite element method (FEM). Results are compared with those of conventional theories based on material mechanics and with experimental results. We found some new aspects of threaded fastener theory. Previous theory overestimates the tightening torque in the relation between preload and tightening torque. Because we modeled the protrusion of bolt from nut and the stiffness of the clamped component unlike previous theory, the load distribution of 1st pitch decreases and that of 4th pitch turns to be the minimum. Good qualitative agreement was observed between FEM and experiments with respect to the behavior of loosening under conditions of shear loading such as hysteresis loop of transverse displacement and shear load and critical slip width for complete bolt-head slip. It was found that loosening is initiated when complete thread slip has occurred prior to head slip, which has previously been considered the initial point of loosening. Therefore, modification of the design of the threaded fastener is needed.

Abstract:High-strength bolted connections have attracted increasing attention over the past few decades because they can safely transfer the design load. However, the effect of the preload loss on the mechanical behavior of the bolted connections has not been investigated sufficiently, This paper presents an experimental investigation of the bearing capacity of high-strength bolted connections with loose bolts (lacking pretension force). The tests investigated ninety specimens with loose bolts and six specimens without loose bolts for comparison. The results showed that bolt fracture was the only failure mode for all of the tested connections under uniaxial tension. The global behavior of the tested connections exhibited four stages, and the features of each stage were summarized. The connections with different tightening conditions exhibited a similar trend in terms of strain development around the bolt holes. The effect of the slip coefficient, position and number of loose bolts, and the plate thickness is elucidated through parametric studies. It is found that the yield load of high-strength bolted connections may be affected by the pretension force and the slip coefficient, while the effect of the slip coefficient gradually decreases with the increasing number of loose bolts. The experimental results are compared to the calculated ultimate bearing resistance according to the GB 50017, Eurocode 3, and AISC 360-16 standards. It is found that the resistance prediction of the standards may be too conservative for the prediction of the ultimate bearing capacity of loose high-strength bolted connections when bolt fracture governs failure. Practical design recommendations in the algebraic form are presented and verified to predict the yield load and ultimate bearing capacity of loose high-strength bolted connections.

Abstract:The interference fit can improve the fatigue performance of mechanical joints and is widely used in aircraft assembly. In this paper, specimens of lap plates and several interference fit sizes were designed, and then the interference fit hi-lock bolt insertion was carried out in an experimental test. Using the commercial finite element software ABAQUS, a two-dimensional axisymmetric finite element model was established to simulate the bolt insertion process. The finite element model was validated by comparison of experimental results and finite element prediction for insertion force and protuberance height. After the interference fitted bolt insertion, the changing characteristics of the non-uniform hole expansion and protuberance were presented with increases in interference fit size. Under low level of interference fit, the tensile hoop stress was produced mainly on the hole wall, and changed into compressive hoop stress when interference fit size is larger. The maximum tensile hoop stress point on faying surfaces went away from the hole wall with interference fit size increasing.

Abstract:<p>The accumulation of local slippage between thread contact surfaces has recently emerged as a key reason for the self-loosening of threaded fasteners subjected to transversal vibration. However, the mechanism of local slippage accumulation is still elusive despite intense research. The authors recently proposed modified Iwan models to theoretically analyze local slippage accumulation and identified the principle of anti-loosening, upon which some novel anti-loosening structures were designed. However, simulation validation of the modified Iwan models and deep performance analysis of novel thread structures are lacking. Hence, we developed novel algorithms to simulate the modified Iwan models for the cumulative process of local slippage. These algorithms confirmed that the previous theoretical analytical results are reliable. Additionally, the mechanism of local slippage accumulation was revealed and the critical local slippage accumulation was studied. We also compared systematically the tightening and anti-loosening performances of proposed novel thread structures with other existing anti-loosening products by finite-element analyses and experiments. The novel thread structures exhibited superior anti-loosening performance and were convenient to install and remove.</p>

Abstract:Screw loosening remains a prominent problem for osteoporotic patients undergoing pedicle screw fixation surgeries and is affected by screw parameters (e.g., diameter, pitch and thread angle). However, the individual and interactive effects of these parameters on screw fixation are not fully understood. Furthermore, current finite element modeling of an threaded screw is less computationally efficient. To address these issues, we (1) explored a novel "simulated threaded screw" approach (virtual threads assigned to the contact elements of a simplified screw) and compared its performance with threaded and simplified screws, and (2) examined with this approach the individual and interactive effects of altering screw diameter (5.5-6.5 mm), pitch (1-2 mm) and half-thread angle (20-30°) on pullout strength of normal vertebrae. Results demonstrated that the "simulated threaded screw" approach equivalently predicted pullout strength compared to the "threaded screw" approach (R2 = 0.99, slope = 1). We further found that the pullout strength was most sensitive to the change in screw diameter, followed by thread angle, pitch and interactions of diameter*pitch or diameter*angle. In conclusion, the "simulated threaded screw" approach can achieve the same predictive capability compared to threaded modeling of the screw. The current findings may serve as useful references for planning of screw parameters, so as to improve the complication of screw loosening.

Abstract:Self-loosening of bolted joints can occur in a vibration environment, and it may induce bolt fatigue fracture with catastrophic consequences. It is essential to clarify the self-loosening mechanism, based on which novel anti-loosening thread structures can be developed. In this paper, we propose the concept of radial slippage propagation and provide new insights into the self-loosening process. The new theory states that the slippage along the radial direction of the thread surface induces more slippage areas (slippage propagation), and self-loosening occurs due to the dynamic evolution and propagation of contact states on the thread and bearing surfaces with an increase in the number of vibration cycles. Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to validate the propagation process of slippage areas on the thread surface. A novel bolted joint with step thread engagement was developed, which could prevent the occurrence of relative motion of the external and internal threads in the radial direction and thus block slippage propagation. A three-dimensional (3D) finite element model (FEM) of the novel thread structure was established, and a test specimen was manufactured using two special tools. FEA and experiments validated its superior anti-loosening and anti-fatigue performances, and the convenience of installation and removal. Experimental validation of the radial slippage propagation theory and the performance optimisation of the step-thread structure should be performed in the future.

Abstract:In industrial fields, the bolt-nut connection is widely used and unitized as an important machine component. In the previous studies, a bolt-nut connection with slight pitch difference was considered towards realizing anti-loosening performance and high fatigue strength through axisymmetric finite element method (FEM) as well as experiment. Also by applying three-dimensional FEM, the nut screwing process was analyzed to obtain the prevailing torque Tp confirming anti-loosening performance. In this study, the tightening and untightening processes after the nut touched the clamped body are analyzed through 3D FEM as well as experiment. The FEM results are in good agreement with the experimental results. The clamping force and tightening torque relationship under the pitch difference is compared to the normal nut. Then, the behaviors of the pitch difference nut in tightening and untightening process is discussed by varying the pitch difference. For the normal nut, the equation of clamping force and tightening torque relation in the untightening process is clarified by FEM. Since the nut untightening property after the nut tightening is more important to prevent the nut self-loosening, the loosening resistance torque TRu is newly defined in this process. It is found that with increasing the pitch difference the loosening resistance torque TRu increases. The large loosening resistance torque TRu suggests that the pitch difference nuts have good anti-loosening performance.

Abstract:In order to predict the bolt’s stress distribution under the pre-tightening state and the loosening process under the transverse load, a 3D model considering the bolt thread structure was established by finite element method (FEM). In this study, the looseness effect of transverse load amplitude, the friction coefficient of the bolt head load bearing surface and the thread contact surface are mainly studied. The result indicated that the stress under bolt pre-tightening is mainly concentrated on the contact part of the bolt’s head and bar. At the contact area of the load threads at one end and the transition part between the bolt bar and the thread, the stress and axial direction of the thread part are offset. Under the transverse displacement load, the sliding of the bolt can be divided into three stages: full contact, viscous contact, and full slip. The numerical model of bolt relaxation obtained in this paper can provide reference for the application, checking and prediction of threaded fasteners.

Abstract:In order to explore the fastening scheme of screw sets in electronic components, the workbench of ANSYS finite element analysis software is utilized to establish a simulation model for the process analysis of screw sets. Using the thread preload as the constraint, Workbench is utilized to explore the effects of different tightening sequences and the number of tightening times on the maximum stress of the screws. The simulation results show that 1-3-4-2 can make the screws bear uniformly and the maximum stress is the smallest; the increase in the number of screwing times tends to decrease and then increase the maximum stress of the screws, which can be used by the finite element analysis software to provide a reference for the actual fastening situation.

Abstract:Abstract Precision nuts are widely used in tool spindles and ball screws. Proper locking gives the bearing the right amount of pre-pressure so that the inner balls can roll steadily and inhibit friction and rapid temperature rise. If no pre-pressure is given to the bearing, it will cause the inner ball to slide irregularly and generate extremely high temperatures. In this paper, the precision nuts used are the flank locking precision locked nut and clasp locking precision locked nut for Taguchi method experiments. The control factors are nut type, Fitting clearance, and lubrication oil. Interference factors are surroundings temperature, assembly personnel, and torque wrench. The purpose is to obtain more suitable anti-loosening characteristics by the Taguchi method under the influence of interference factors and to check the thread angle and thread pitch before and after the experiment. The experimental results were analyzed form Taguchi method to find the combination of parameters with the maximum S/N and the variance analysis to obtain the significant factor. Finally, the regression equation of the loosening prevention characteristics was obtained by regression analysis, which shows that the optimized parameters effectively improve the loosening prevention characteristics and explore the interference factor on the loosening prevention characteristics of precision nuts.

Abstract:Abstract Loosening of threaded fasteners is a key failure mode, which is mainly caused by the slippage and friction behaviors on the thread and bearing surfaces, and will affect the integrity and reliability of products. Numerous scholars have conducted research on the loosening of threaded fasteners; however, comprehensive reviews on the loosening of threaded fasteners have been scarce. In this review article, we define loosening as a loss of preload and divide it into non-rotational and rotational loosening. The causes and mechanisms of non-rotational and rotational loosening are summarised. Some essential topics regarding loosening under transverse vibration have also attracted significant attention and have been investigated widely, including the loosening curve, critical condition of loosening, and influencing factors of loosening. The research carried out on these three topics is also summarised in this review. It is believed that our work will not only help new researchers quickly understand the state-of-the-art research on loosening, but also increase the knowledge of engineers on this critical subject. In the future, it is important to conduct more quantitative research on local slippage accumulation, and the relationship between local slippage accumulation and rotational loosening, which will have the potential to comprehensively unravel the loosening mechanism, and effectively guide the anti-loosening design of threaded fasteners.

Nonlinear Analysis of the Threaded Connection with Three-Dimensional Finite Element Model

Abstract:The engagement surface of the threaded connection of Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG) is a complex helical surface. The stress analysis of the threaded connection involves material nonlinearity, geometric nonlinearity and contact nonlinearity. It is difficult to obtain an analytical solution and the finite element method (FEM) is a powerful numerical method for solving the problem of threaded connection. Due to the complexity of three-dimensional modeling and the difficulty of computational convergence, researchers usually use two-dimensional axisymmetric finite element models to analyze the characteristic of threaded connection. However, twodimensional axisymmetric model can not efficiently simulate the stress characteristics of the threaded connection with make-up torque, which has greatly influence on the reliability of the connection, and it can not reflect the real stress state of the threaded connection. In this paper, an explicit dynamic FEM is employed and the nonlinear contact theory, nonlinear elastic-plastic stress-strain relationships and the von Mises yield criterion are considered to analyze the stress distribution of the threaded connection. As examples, three-dimensional elasto-plastic finite element models of bypass valve and drill pipe threaded connection are established. Mechanical characteristics of the threaded connections are analyzed, in which the make-up torque, axial loads and working torque are comparable with the real working conditions. It is found that the pin of bypass valve threaded connection shows a high stress and is broken when the working torque exceeds 22992.8 N center dot m. Meanwhile, drill pipe threaded connection is reliable under the most demanding load. Analysis results presented in this paper are consistent with the field observation.

Abstract:Aim Biomechanical performance is a critical factor in the long‐term success of dental implants, with abutment screw loosening being a common clinical issue. This study aimed to examine the impact of abutment screw design and external load loading angles on abutment screw loosening. Materials and Methods Abutments and abutment screws with 30°, 60°, 90°, and 180° fitting tapers were fabricated and tested for preload and initial loosening torque. Subsequently, dynamic loosening tests were conducted at loading angles of 15°, 30°, and 45°. Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to calculate the stress and strain distribution of the abutment screws. Results The findings indicated that large‐taper abutment screws exhibit a higher preload, whereas small‐taper abutment screws demonstrate greater loosening torque values. Additionally, as the loading angle increases, the loosening torque value decreases, and the stress and strain values of the abutment screw increase. Conclusions Abutment screws with smaller taper heads exhibited superior resistance to loosening. Moreover, the anti‐loosening performance of the abutment screws decreased with higher external load loading angles.

Abstract:The conventional engineering design of threaded fasteners applies a linear model determining axial force from fastening torque and was found to be applicable only for vanishing inelastic deformations. Applications of the linear formula can result in a significant over-estimate of the axial force. Detailed experiments reveal that plasticity and wear damage in contact surfaces change frictional behavior and cause an over-proportional increment in tightening torque. A modified friction model was proposed based on the frictional dissipation energy and verified experimentally and computationally. The corresponding force-torque model shows good consistency with experiments and can be applied to predict plastic fastening processes.

Abstract:By using finite element CFD analysis software POLYFLOW, 3-D transient simulations have been made on the measurement of the five kinds of pin injection screws. The five kinds of pin screws included round pin screw component (two arrangements), square pin screw component and diamond pin screw component (two-ways). Carried out post-processing of the calculated pressure fi eld, velocity f ield, shear velocity f ield and so on, analyzed the mixing effects of melting materials on different pin screw components in the measurement and the resorting situation of the melting materials around pins.
