Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin film was deposited on the surface of the light addressable potentiometric sensor (LAPS) to modify the sensor surface for the non-labeled detection of DNA molecules. To evaluate the effect of ultraviolet (UV) treatment on the silanization level of TiO2 thin film by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS), fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) was used to label the amine group on the end of APTS immobilized onto the TiO2 thin film. We found that, with UV irradiation, the silanization level of the irradiated area of the TiO2 film was improved compared with the non-irradiated area under well-controlled conditions. This result indicates that TiO2 can act as a coating material on the biosensor surface to improve the effect and efficiency of the covalent immobilization of biomolecules on the sensor surface. The artificially synthesized probe DNA molecules were covalently linked onto the surface of TiO2 film. The hybridization of probe DNA and target DNA was monitored by the recording of I-V curves that shift along the voltage axis during the process of reaction. A significant LAPS signal can be detected at 10 µmol/L of target DNA sample.
Impact of functionalized titanium oxide on anion exchange membranes derived from chemically modified PET bottles

Abstract:The accessibility of newly affordable materials has drawn significant attention to the anion exchange membrane (AEM) technology. However, developing a high-performance AEM with excellent hydroxide conductivity and long-term durability is still challenging. The present work aims to improve the overall properties of AEMs synthesized by chemical modification of Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles as the starting material. The modified PET structure was confirmed using IR, NMR, and HPLC-ESIMS analyses. AEMs were developed by incorporating quaternary ammonium (QA) functional groups into the modified PET structure, necessary for transporting anionic species (OH - ). In addition, TiO 2 nanoparticles grafted with silane coupling agents containing amine functional groups were synthesized via the sol-gel method and embedded in the polymer matrix. Then, the prepared nanocomposite membranes were thoroughly characterized, and the results displayed an overall improvement in the membrane's physicochemical properties. The composite membrane with 3wt% content of nanoparticle (NC 3 % /M-PETm) showed remarkable conductivity, reaching 126 mS/cm at 80 °C, doubling the value of pristine membranes (64 mS/cm) while also displaying alkaline stability, retaining up to 92.2 % of conductivity after 20 days in harsh 2 M KOH at 80 °C. These results proved the suitability of these membranes for electrochemical energy applications. This innovative approach offers potential cost savings in preparing the new membranes while aligning with sustainable and circular economy principles.

A novel approach for determining total titanium from titanium dioxide nanoparticles suspended in water and biosolids by digestion with ammonium persulfate

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (i.e. TiO(2)) in nano-form is a constituent of many nanomaterials that are used in sunscreens, cosmetics, industrial products and in biomedical applications. Quantification of TiO(2) nanoparticles in various matrixes is a topic of great interest for researchers studying the potential health and environmental impacts of nanoparticles. However, analysis of TiO(2) as Ti(4+) is difficult because current digestion techniques require use of strong acids that may be a health and safety risk in the laboratory. To overcome this problem, we developed a new method to digest TiO(2) nanoparticles using ammonium persulfate as a fusing reagent. The digestion technique requires short times to completion and optimally requires only 1 g of fusing reagent. The fusion method showed >95% recovery of Ti(4+) from 6 μg mL(-1) aqueous suspensions prepared from 10 μg mL(-1) suspension of different forms of TiO(2,) including anatase, rutile and mixed nanosized crystals, and amorphous particles. These recoveries were greater than open hot-plate digestion with a tri-acid solution and comparable to microwave digestion with a tri-acid solution. Cations and anions commonly found in natural waters showed no significant interferences when added to samples in amounts of 10 ng to 110 mg, which is a much broader range of these ions than expected in environmental samples. Using ICP-MS for analysis, the method detection limit (MDL) was determined to be 0.06 ng mL(-1), and the limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.20 ng mL(-1). Analysis of samples of untreated and treated wastewater and biosolids collected from wastewater treatment plants yielded concentrations of TiO(2) of 1.8 and 1.6 ng mL(-1) for the wastewater samples, respectively, and 317.4 ng mg(-1) dry weights for the biosolids. The reactions between persulfate ions and TiO(2) were evaluated using stoichiometric methods and FTIR and XRD analysis. A formula for the fusing reaction is proposed that involves the formation of sulfate radicals.

Abstract:A new type of temperature-sensitive imprinting composite membrane was prepared by introducing TiO2 in this work. As follows, Firstly, membrane of PVDF/PET was coated by poly dopamine (PDA) and TiO2, and then it was RAFT modified by grafting reaction. After that, temperature-sensitive polymer, Poly(N,N-diethylacrylamide) (PDEA), were grafted onto the membrane surface by graft from reaction and polymerization strategy to give the surface of the imprinted composite membrane a certain "flexibility". Finally, the ReO4 − temperature-sensitive ion-imprinted composite membrane (Ti-Re-TIICM) was made. Comprehensive properties of Ti-Re-TIICM were tested and evaluated. Results showed that Ti-Re-TIICM possessed a thermal recognition site, and the structure of the imprinted cavity could be adjusted by changing the temperature. The maximum adsorption capacity was 0.0669 mmol/g at 35 °C. In the presence of interfering ion MnO4 −, the separation degree of Ti-Re-TIICM was 3.05, and the desorption rate was 65.64 %. After 9 cycles of adsorption/desorption, the adsorption capacity of Ti-Re-TIICM remained at 62.8 % of the original adsorption capacity, the degree of separation decreased to 1.27, and the desorption rate decreased to 56.53 %. When Ti-Re-TIICM was applied to the secondary leach solution of the high temperature alloy, the purity of rhenium in the solution increased from 38.719 % to 61.220 %.

Abstract:<h2 class="section-title u-h3 u-margin-l-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Abstract</h2>The modulation of the ion-fluxes across a polymeric membrane is important for designing attractive methodologies. As an alternative to the commonly used dynamic electrochemistry approaches, light can be used as an external stimulus and provides a very convenient way to manipulate ions release and/or extraction in a polymeric membrane. Herein, we designed a solid-contact polymeric membrane ion-selective sensor that exhibits dynamic response by light irradiation at 375 nm. The electrode membrane contains a light-sensitive lipophilic salt (bis(4-tert-butylphenyl)iodonium tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate (R+-R-, BTDT-TFPB) instead of traditional ion exchanger. Under light illumination, the decomposition of the lipophilic cation makes the membrane with ion-exchange properties. The solid-contact ion-selective electrodes based on potentiometry and constant potential coulometry have been explored for direct ion sensing. Copper was selected as a mode analyte and can be determined at micromole levels. The proposed dynamic ion sensors promise for on-demand ion sensing.

Abstract:A novel mean of generating mesoporous titanium dioxide (TiO2) anodes by employing polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as the film- and pore-forming agent are proposed for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The influences on the morphology and photovoltaic performances of the TiO2 anodes are investigated by adjusting the PVP content in synthesizing the mesoporous TiO2 anodes. The photovoltaic conversion efficiency of the DSSC is found to be strongly dependent on the pore properties of the TiO2 anode. After the sintering process, the removal of the PVP leaves porously interconnected channel structures inside the TiO2 anode, supplying enhanced specific surface area for the dye adsorption as well as the efficient electron transmission. As a result, the TiO2 anode prepared by 20 wt% PVP presents the highest performances, based on which the DSSC achieves the highest conversion efficiency of 8.39%, approximately increased by 56.53% than that of the DSSC fabricated without PVP (5.36%). Abstract:Visible light-driven photocatalytic membranes are a promising, energy-efficient approach for wastewater treatment. In this study, a visible light-responsive TiO2@polydopamine 2 @polydopamine (TiO2@PDA) 2 @PDA) core-shell was developed for integration into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes. The use of polydopamine enhances the binding of the photocatalyst to the membrane and improves the oxidation resistance of the membrane material. We examined the impact of TiO2@PDA 2 @PDA positioning within the membrane using two techniques: mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) and surface coating. We found that better dispersion of TiO2@PDA 2 @PDA in MMMs leads to higher photodegradation performance compared to a surface-coated membrane. At comparable TiO2 2 loadings (3.5-4.0 %), MMMs degraded 95.1 % of dye, while surface-coated membrane degraded 89.2 %. The M7 membrane (7 % TiO2@PDA 2 @PDA in the dope) absorbed and degraded 98.1 % of Reactive Red 239 (RR 239) dye under visible light irradiation for 150 min with filtration, compared to 4.0 % degradation without filtration, highlighting the importance of in-pore photocatalytic activity. The MMMs method achieved robust binding stability between TiO2@PDA 2 @PDA and the membrane. Both integration methods demonstrated high reusability, with approximately a 10 % reduction in efficiency after 10 cycles. These results demonstrated the potential of applying a simple method to modify TiO2, 2 , solving problems with its low visible light absorption and binding stability and protecting PVDF membranes from photodegradation, thus enhancing the practical applications of photocatalytic membranes.

Abstract:Chlorophenols are a widespread class of chemical compounds with multiple applications across various industries. Trichlorophenol (TCP) is an organochlorine compound widely utilized as an antifungal, antiseptic agent, antimicrobial, insecticide, and pesticide. This study presents a novel approach to electrochemically detect TCP using a newly developed titanium oxide-aluminum oxide nanocomposite-modified glassy carbon electrode (TiO 2 . Al 2 O 3 -NCs/GCE). TiO 2 . Al 2 O 3 -NCs were synthesized through the co-precipitation method using fagonia plant extract, followed by the fabrication of TiO 2 . Al 2 O 3 -NCs/GCE by drop casting approach. The TiO 2 . Al 2 O 3 -NCs exhibited a cubic crystalline phase with a rough surface, while their particle size was less than 40 nm and had an average zeta potential value of 7.23 mV. The TiO 2 . Al 2 O 3 -NCs/GCE was applied for the quantitative detection of TCP by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The results demonstrated excellent accuracy and selectivity of the fabricated sensor for trace-level detection of TCP with a detection limit of 1.85 × 10 −9 M. The TiO 2 . Al 2 O 3 -NCs/GCE-based developed electrochemical method was successfully applied for detecting TCP from water and pharmaceutical samples with excellent recoveries (> 90%).

Abstract:This study presents a novel and versatile approach to robustly bind TiO2 nanoparticles on thin film composite (TFC) membranes by using polydopamine, which is capable to self-polymerize on membranes as well as on the surfaces of nanoparticles. The traditional self-assembly method is used as a reference. The binding performance of both methods is investigated by rinsing and wiping tests and evaluated by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). In addition, the effects of the concentration of TiO2 nanoparticles in the suspension as well as the polymerization time of dopamine on the binding performance are studied. It was observed that, for the same modification and rinsing conditions, the polydopamine method is able to bind significantly more TiO2 on the membrane surface. According to the wiping test, the quantity of nanoparticles embedded in the polydopamine layer does not change. However, the traditional self-assembly method cannot stand the wiping force and no nanoparticles are left after wiping. The interesting hydrophilicity and the filtration performance of each modification step is further investigated. The polydopamine significantly increases the water contact angle of the polyamide thin film composite (TFC) membranes. The membranes modified by the traditional self-assembly method exhibit a significant flux loss compared to the original membranes. On the contrary, the polydopamine method can keep the membrane performance. Thus, this procedure can be considered as a novel and versatile method to bind TiO2 nanoparticles on TFC membranes, and it can be easily adapted for a variety of membranes to bind nanomaterials without a complex surface pretreatment.

Abstract:The approach of the present work is based on the use of poly (methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) polymer, which is compatible with PVDF and TiO2 nanoparticles in casting solutions, for the preparation of nano-composites membranes using a safer and more compatible solvent. TiO2 embedded poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/PMMA photocatalytic membranes were prepared by phase inversion method. A non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) coupled with vapor induced phase separation (VIPS) was used to fabricate flat-sheet membranes using a dope solution consisting of PMMA, PVDF, TiO2, and triethyl phosphate (TEP) as an alternative non-toxic solvent. Membrane morphology was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Backscatter electron detector (BSD) mapping was used to monitor the inter-dispersion of TiO2 in the membrane surface and matrix. The effects of polymer concentration, evaporation time, additives and catalyst amount on the membrane morphology and properties were investigated. Tests on photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) were also carried out using the membranes entrapped with different concentrations of TiO2. The results of this study showed that nearly 99% MB removal can be easily achieved by photocatalysis using TiO2 immobilized on the membrane matrix. Moreover, it was observed that the quantity of TiO2 plays a significant role in the dye removal.

Abstract:Among semiconductor metal oxides, that are an important class of sensing materials, titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin films are widely employed as sensors because of their high chemical and mechanical stability in harsh environments, non-toxicity, eco-compatibility, and photocatalytic properties. TiO2-based chemical oxygen demand (COD) sensors exploit the photocatalytic properties of TiO2 in inducing the oxidation of organic compounds to CO2. In this work, we discuss nanostructured TiO2 thin films grown via low-pressure metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) on metallic AISI 316 mesh. To increase the surface sensing area, different inorganic acid-based chemical etching protocols have been developed, determining the optimal experimental conditions for adequate substrate roughness. Both chemically etched pristine meshes and the MOCVD-coated ones have been studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) microanalysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). We demonstrate that etching by HCl/H2SO4 at 55 °C provides the most suitable surface morphology. To investigate the behavior of the developed high surface area TiO2 thin films as COD sensors, photocatalytic degradation of functional model pollutants based on ISO 10678:2010 has been tested, showing for the best performing acid-etched mesh coated with polycrystalline TiO2 an increase of 60% in activity, and degrading 66 μmol of MB per square meter per hour.

Abstract:Semiconductor-based sensors have played an important role in efficient detection of combustible, flammable, and toxic gases, but they usually need to operate at elevated temperatures (200 °C or higher). Although reducing the operation temperature down to room temperature is of practical significance, it is still a huge challenge to fabricate room temperature sensors with a low cost. Here we show a novel "self-doping" strategy to overcome simultaneously both difficulties of "high resistance" and "low reaction rate", which have always been encountered for room-temperature operation of semiconductor-based sensors. In particular, a porous crystalline titania with heavily self-doped Ti(3+) species has been prepared by using a porous amorphous TiO2 and urea as the starting materials. The resulting Ti(3+) self-doped TiO2 material serves as an efficient room-temperature gas-sensing material for specific CO detection with fast response/recovery. The self-dopant (Ti(3+)) in the titania material has proved to decrease the resistance of TiO2 significantly on the one hand and to increase the chemisorbed oxygen species substantially, thus enhancing the surface reaction activity on the other. Such a self-doping concept is anticipated to give a fresh impetus to rational design of room-temperature sensing devices with low costs.
NEW SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC METHOD FOR DETERMINING TITANIUM(IV) IN NATURAL OBJECTS

Abstract:The article considers the interaction of Ti(IV) with 2, 3, 4-trihydroxy-3'-fluoroazobenzene (H3R) in the presence and absence of phenontroline (Phen), α, α'-dipyridine (α, α'-dip), and batophenontroline (B-phen) studied by using a spectrophotometric method. It has been found that the yield of the binary complex is maximum at pHopt = 5 (λmax = 428 nm), and for mixed-ligand complexes, pHopt = 3.0; 4.0; 3.5; λmax = 477 nm, 443 nm, 440 nm Ti(OH)2(H2R)-Phen, Ti (OH)2(H2R)-α, α'-dip and Ti(OH)2(H2R)-B-phen, respectively. It has been investigated that a twofold excess of the reagent is required for complete binding of titanium(IV) into the complex. The influence of time and temperature on the complexation is investigated. The stability constants of binary and mixed-ligand titanium(IV) complexes were calculated: logβ = 8.61 ± 0.05 for Ti(OH)2(H2R)2, logβ = 10.98 ± 0.06 for Ti(OH)2(H2R)-Phen, logβ = 10.85 ± 0.04 for Ti (OH)2(H2R)-α, α'-dip, logβ = 11.26 ± 0.03 for Ti(OH)2(H2R)-B-phen. The ratio of the reacting components in the binary complex is 1 : 2, and in the mixed ligands 1 : 2 : 2. The influence of foreign ions and masking substances on the titanium(IV) complexation with reagents has been studied. The determination is practically not interfered by alkaline, alkaline-earth and some transition elements. Due to these characteristics, the complexes can be used for defining titanium(IV) in different objects.

Abstract:Silver ion (Ag + ) is of harmful effects to both environment and human health. Ag + soluble compounds and salts is used in treating mental illness, epilepsy, nicotine addiction, gastroenteritis, and infectious diseases, including syphilis and gonorrhea, and as anti-infective dermatological agent for controlling nose bleeding. However, high Ag + doses cause several harmful effects to human health such as irreversible pigmentation of skin and eye, and problems to liver and kidney. A bulk membrane Optode is proposed in this work to measure the Ag + concentration in the pharmaceutical formulations. The membrane optode is prepared from the ionophore 4-nitobenzo-15-crown-5, the ion-exchanger sodium tetrakis (imidazolyl) borate, the plasticizer o-nitrophenyl octyl ether, and the chromoionophore ETH 5294; these components are dissolved in the PVC/THF slurry to form the membrane. The optode is studied by atomic force microscope and UV–visible spectrophotometer, and its spectrum exhibits two maximum wavelengths of 550 and 665 nm, and response for Ag + at these maximum wavelengths is reproducible in the concentration range of 10 –11 to 10 –8 M using acetate buffer of pH 5.0, with very low detection limit of 8.8 × 10 –12 M. The most important feature in this work is the selectivity improvement for Ag + over all interfering ions; the selectivity coefficient logarithm is found to be − 4.3 for Cu 2+ , − 5.6 for Ni 2+ and − 5.0 for Cd 2+ . The response mechanism is studied by FTIR, and it depends on ion-exchange of Ag + and sodium imidazolyl borate, followed by the host–guest complexation between Ag + and the crown ionophore, which is accompanied by concomitant deprotonation of the chromoionphore. The optode has a response time of 2–3 min within lifetime of 10 days with the same response. The optode can be applied successfully for Ag + determination in the pharmaceutical formulation, PinkEye Relief ® eye drop, which is used for treating inflammation, redness and water discharge of the eye; the high recovery and low standard deviation of the results using calibration curve method confirm the accuracy and precision of the proposed optode for its application in real samples.

Abstract:Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) blended polymeric membrane were prepared using solution casting method by embedding varying amount of titanium oxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles (NPs). X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and single gas permeation measurements were used to characterize the structural, thermal and permeation properties of the prepared membranes. Crystalline nature of the prepared membranes was confirmed by XRD pattern. FESEM confirmed the dispersion of TiO 2 NPs in the polymer matrix. In terms of PVA/PVP polymer and TiO 2 nanoparticle deposition, FT-IR confirms the molecular structure of membranes. TGA analysis revealed that the TiO 2 -loaded membranes were more thermally stable than the pure polymeric membrane. The influence of TiO 2 NPs on the gas permeability and the selectivity of the pure and mixed matrix membrane (MMMs) for H 2 , N 2 , O 2 and CH 4 gases was examined at room temperature with various feed pressure. Membrane permeability and the selectivity increased significantly with increasing the TiO 2 NPs concentration. With increasing the feed pressure, the permeability of the membranes reduced considerably while the selectivity improved slightly.

Abstract:An optimized mixture of polydopamine (PDA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is employed as the surface functionalizing agent and reducing agent to encapsulate individual polypropylene (PP) fibers of polypropylene micromembrane (PPMM). The functionalized PPMM becomes hydrophilic to allow the formation of Au nuclei for subsequent electroless Au deposition. The metalized PPMM is further deposited with IrO 2 nanoparticles, and evaluated as a flexible and porous pH sensor. Images from scanning electron microscope confirms the uniform formation of IrO 2 nanoparticles on Au-coated PP fibers. For pH-sensing performance, the IrO 2 -decorated metalized PPMM reveals a super-Nernstian response for a sensing slope of -74.45 mV/pH in aqueous solutions with pH value ranging between 2 and 12. In addition, the pH-sensing performance is properly maintained after 5000 bending cycles and hysteresis is modest in an acidic environment. The cell viability test indicates a negligible bio-toxicity. Our strategy of using a conductive polymeric membrane decorated with IrO 2 nanoparticles enables possible sensing applications in wearable and implantable electronics.

Abstract:Thin titanium dioxide films were successfully prepared on titanium plates in ammonium sulfate solution with the micro-plasma oxidation method. The thin TiO2 films were sensitized with a cis-RuL2(SCN)2⋅2H2O (L = cis-2, 2′-bipyridine-4, 4′-dicarboxlic acid) ruthenium complex, and implemented into a dye sensitized solar cell configuration. The influence of current density on the surface structure and photoelectric performance of the TiO2 films was investigated. The results show that the thin TiO2 films are porous, and the dye-sensitized solar cell based on the film prepared at 14 A/dm2 has exhibited higher overall light-to-electricity conversion efficiencies of 0.095% under the illumination at 40 mW/cm2.

Abstract:Due to their beneficial characteristics, 1D nanowires have made significant advancements in different realms due to their large surface area, unique surface chemistry, and tunable transport properties. Herein, a comprehensive study of titanium oxide nanowires from titanium (IV) isopropoxide, with the addition of CNTs in the polymeric membrane, has been conducted to form crystals. This method is quite proficient for nanowire synthetization, incorporated with CNTs and polymeric membranes. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were used to enhance their properties with polymeric polyvinylidene fluoride PVDF membrane. The concentration ratio of titanium oxide in PVDF membrane was 1, 3, 5, 10, and 15%. The development of titanium oxide nanowires at the nano level shaped, as the emulsion electrospinning created 1D nanowires. The use of an additive makes the membrane more conductive. FT-IR, XRD, EDS, and SEM techniques were used for size, surface geometry, crystalline nature, blend membrane, and thin film composition determination. Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) analysis shows that weight loss with temperature increases at optimum level.

Abstract:A Ti3C2 membrane was prepared by doping UIO-66-NH2 with Ti3C2 through hydrogen bonds. When the doping mass ratio of Ti3C2 and UIO-66-NH2 was 6:1, the electrochemical performance was optimal. Characterization was done by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) which exhibited hierarchical cave-like physiognomy, large specific area, outstanding electronic conductive network, and excellent film-forming property. Moreover, the Ti3C2 film was analyzed via atomic force microscopy (AFM), which displayed good mechanical properties and rough surface morphology. The fabricated Ti3C2 membrane/GCE sensor was applied to the detection of dopamine (working potential of + 0.264 V vs. Ag/AgCl) with LOD of 0.81 fM and a sensitivity of 14.72 µA fM-1 cm-2. It was demonstrated that the Ti3C2 membrane can be used to construct nonenzymatic sensors with excellent performance. The fabricated sensor has high selectivity and stability and has good practicability with recoveries of 101.2-103.5% and a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 1.2-2.4%.
