Abstract:A new highly selective hydrogen sensor based on TiO2/PtO-Pt dual-layer films has been prepared. At 180-200 degreesC, the prepared nanostructured sensor exhibits an excellent selectivity and good sensitivity to H-2 in air but is immune to many other kinds of reductive gases such as CO, NH3, and CH4. The sensor can give a faithful response to 1% H-2 in air, while the limitation for detecting H-2 in nitrogen is less than 1000 ppm. Influences of operation temperature and humidity on the sensing performance of the sensor were also investigated. The mechanism of the present sensor was attributed to the partial reduction of Ti4+ to Ti3+ by hydrogen catalyzed by a thin film of surface-oxidized Pt nanoparticles.
Study on hydrogen sensitivities of TiO2/PtO-Pt and SnO2/PtO-Pt dual-layer films

Abstract:Combining a granular thin film of PtO-Pt with a film of TiO2 or SnO2 nanoparticles, we have designed and successfully prepared a new type of hydrogen sensors with a dual-layer structure. Microstructures of the prepared sensors were characterized by TEM and HRSEM. Measurements on the sensitivities, of the prepared sensors to 4.0% H-2 in air reveal that the sensitivity of Ti-2/PtO-Pt is about 70% at 200 degreesC, while that of SnO2/PtO-Pt at 100 degreesC is up to 92%. The high sensitivities of the prepared dual-layer films sensors at relatively low temperature are derived from the catalytic function of the PtO-Pt granular film. In addition, both TiO2/PtO-Pt and SnO2/PtO-Pt show a high selectivity to hydrogen in air.
High Performance Hydrogen Sensor Based on Pd/TiO2 Composite Film

Abstract:Hydrogen sensors with fast response and recovery rate based on nanoporous palladium (Pd) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) composite films supported by anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template have been demonstrated. Nanoporous TiO2 film was sprayed on the porous AAO templates, followed by Pd film deposited on TiO2 layer by DC magnetron sputtering. We have researched the detection performance of the hydrogen sensors depending on different thickness of TiO2 layer from 6 to 30 nm with keeping the thickness of Pd as 30 nm. The results have demonstrated the sensors with 10 nm thickness of TiO2 achieve the best performance with a response/recovery time as short as 4/8s at 0.8% and 0.4% hydrogen concentration, respectively. An Ultrasensitive Room-Temperature H2 Sensor Based on a TiO2 Rutile–Anatase Homojunction

Abstract:Metal oxide semiconductor hetero- and homojunctions are commonly constructed to improve the performance of hydrogen sensors at room temperature. In this study, a simple two-step hydrothermal method was employed to prepare TiO2 films with homojunctions of rutile and anatase phases (denoted as TiO2-R/A). Then, the microstructure of anatase-phase TiO2 was altered by controlling the amount of hydrochloric acid to realize a more favorable porous structure for charge transport and a larger surface area for contact with H2. The sensor used a Pt interdigital electrode. At an optimal HCl dosage (25 mL), anatase-phase TiO2 uniformly covered rutile-phase TiO2 nanorods, resulting in a greater response to H2 at 2500 ppm compared with that of a rutile TiO2 nanorod sensor by a factor of 1153. The response time was 21 s, mainly because the homojunction formed by the TiO2 rutile and anatase phases increased the synergistic effect of the charge transfer and potential barrier between the two phases, resulting in the formation of more superoxide (O2−) free radicals on the surface. Furthermore, the porous structure increased the surface area for H2 adsorption. The TiO2-R/A-based sensor exhibited high selectivity, long-term stability, and a fast response. This study provides new insights into the design of commercially competitive hydrogen sensors.

Design and Fabrication of TiO2 Thin Films Oxygen Sensors

Abstract:In this paper, we investigated the sensing properties of oxygen gas sensors in which the nanostructured TiO2 thin films buried with Pd layer serve as the semiconducting materials. The nanostructured titania thin films for O2 sensors were prepared with the sol-gel process by using the Ti butoxide-derived sol and were processed by heat-treatment at 500 °C. The TiO2 square board with an area of 350 μm × 350 μm was prepared by wet etching. On the square board, 150 nm Pt micro interdigitated electrodes with 50 nm Ti buffer layer were fabricated by lift-off process. X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis of TiO2 film results indicated the crystal phase of TiO2 thin films was anatase, and SEM observation showed the average size of TiO2 thin films buried with Pd layer crystals were decreased compared with the pure TiO2 thin films. Electric resistance of the O2 sensor was monitored to evaluate its performance and the results showed that the sensor outputs stable signal with good response properties.
Ultra-high Acetone sensitivity sensor based on Pt-loaded TiO2 porous NPs synthesized via facile hydrothermal method

Abstract:A simple hydrothermal method based on an orthogonal experimental design was used to synthesis the Pt-loaded TiO2 mesoporous nanoparticles in one step. The successful synthesis of Pt-loaded TiO2 nanoparticles was demonstrated by various characterization methods. The effects of the modification of the precious metal platinum and the explanation of its causes are described in detail by means of the test results. Through systematic gas sensitization tests, we found that the Pt-loaded TiO2 nanoparticles outperform pure TiO2 as gas sensors, with a high response value (S = 42.5) to 200 ppm acetone at 260 °C and 0.45 mm of film thickness. which is far superior to that of the pure TiO2. The response time and recovery time of the material are also relatively good with excellent selectivity and long-term stability.The material is anticipated to be effective for acetone detection.

Conductometric H2S Sensors Based on TiO2 Nanoparticles

Abstract:High-performance hydrogen sulfide (H2S) sensors are mandatory for many industrial applications. However, the development of H2S sensors still remains a challenge for researchers. In this work, we report the study of a TiO2-based conductometric sensor for H2S monitoring at low concentrations. TiO2 samples were first synthesized using the sol-gel route, annealed at different temperatures (400 and 600 °C), and thoroughly characterized to evaluate their morphological and microstructural properties. Scanning electronic microscopy, Raman scattering, X-ray diffraction, and FTIR spectroscopy have demonstrated the formation of clusters of pure anatase in the TiO2 phase. Increasing the calcination temperature to 600 °C enhanced TiO2 crystallinity and particle size (from 11 nm to 51 nm), accompanied by the transition to the rutile phase and a slight decrease in band gap (3.31 eV for 400 °C to 3.26 eV for 600 °C). Sensing tests demonstrate that TiO2 annealed at 400 °C displays good performances (sensor response Ra/Rg of ~3.3 at 2.5 ppm and fast response/recovery of 8 and 23 s, respectively) for the detection of H2S at low concentrations in air.
A Novel CO Sensor Based on the Point Contact Between Pd Decorated TiO2 Nanotubes Array

Abstract:To obtain a high sensitive CO sensor, a new nanostructure based on the point contact between Pd decorated TiO2 nanotubes was proposed in this paper. TiO2 nanotubes array was fabricated on titanium wire by electrochemical anodic oxidation, and Pd catalytic nanoparticles were modified by the micro-emulsion electrochemical deposition. The surface morphology was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and CO sensitivity of the point contact between TiO2 nanotubes was investigated through the current-voltage (I-V) characteristic measurement. It was found that Pd epitaxially grew along the tube walls, and they were distributed on the surface of the nanotubes. The point contact based sensor between Pd decorated TiO2 nanotubes exhibited a strong temperature dependent sensitivity towards CO. From the I-V curves, we found the Schottky barrier was formed on the contact and the barrier height was also calculated.

Abstract:Thin titanium oxide (TiO2) films were prepared through electron-beam evaporation of titanium metal on substrates followed by oxidizing and sintering at 600°C in flowing oxygen. The thicknesses of the as-deposit metal films were 25nm, 50nm and 100nm. The phase of the TiO2 converted from the thermal oxidation was detected to be rutile. Nanoporous anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) and plain thermal silicon oxide on top of a commercial silicon wafer were used as substrates to support the TiO2 thin layer. A pair of interdigit platinum electrodes with a spacing of 5μm was fabricated on the TiO2 thin films by photolithography. At 500°C, the samples showed different sensing behaviors to hydrogen concentration levels ranging from 5ppm to 500ppm, with nitrogen as the background gas. It was found that the sensitivity was significantly enhanced by the increased specific surface area of the TiO2 thin film due to the shaping of the porous AAO substrate. The performance of the sensor based on the TiO2 film converted from 25-nm-thick Ti on the porous AAO substrate, which has the largest specific surface area among all the other samples, was featured by a conductance change of 25–90 times and considerable resolution for 5ppm to 500ppm H2, as well as very fast response and recovery (the time delay to reach or retreat to half of the maximum stable signal, t50%, was always no more than 10s). The rutile-phased thin TiO2 film on AAO is proven to be a promising high-temperature hydrogen sensor with satisfactory performance, excellent durability, and ideal compatibility to micro-miniaturization.
Highly Selective and Sensitive Reversible Sensor for Cu (II) Detection Based on Hollow TiO2 Spheres Modified by Fluorescein Hydrozine-3,6-diacetic Acid

Abstract:We report a novel electrochemical sensor for the sensitive detection of Cu(II) ions based on hollow TiO2 spheres modified by fluorescein hydrozine-3,6-diacetic acid (FH). Herein, hollow TiO2 spheres were synthesized via the hydrothermal method with the carbon spheres as the template then modified by (3-aminopropyl) trimethoxysilane (APTMS) to form the amino group-modified TiO2 spheres (TiO2–APTMS). Simultaneously, FH was activated by 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide hydrochloride/N-hydroxysuccinimide, in which the carboxyl groups were changed to active ester groups. Consequently, TiO2–APTMS spheres could be modified by FH with the activated ester groups via the bonding of amide groups to produce the composite electrode with TiO2 and FH (Au–TiO2–FH). The resulting Au–TiO2–FH was used to develop the electrochemical sensor for the highly sensitive detection of Cu2+ in aqueous solution because of the coordination between Cu2+ and FH, the whole process of which was determined via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results showed that a detection limit of 4.29pM of the developed sensor within the range from 5pM to 1μM was obtained. Furthermore, the interference from other metal ions, such as K+, Na+, Ag+, Ni2+, Mn2+, Zn2+, Mg2+, and Fe3+, associated with Cu2+ analysis could be effectively inhibited. Most importantly, the developed electrochemical sensor could be reproduced and degraded by UV light irradiation because of the light degradation ability of TiO2 toward FH. This novel sensor could also be used to detect other heavy metal ions when TiO2 spheres are modified by the relative FH.
Comparison of Pt and Pd Modified TiO2 Gas Sensors

Abstract:Pt and Pd have been widely used to improve response properties of TiO2 based gas sensors. In this work, differences on response properties, especially the response time of Pt/TiO2 and Pd/TiO2 sensors, were carefully compared. TiO2 sensing films were modified by dipping method using H2PtCl6 and PdCl2, respectively. XRD, XPS and SEM were used to characterize the crystal structure, elemental composition and grain size of the sensing films. The defect state was characterized by the relationship between resistance and oxygen partial pressure. And the response transients to H2 and O2 were tested by voltammetry method. Abstract:In this paper, we investigated the sensing properties of sandwich structure of TiO2/Pd/TiO2 thin films at various operating temperatures and oxygen partial pressures. The nanostructure TiO2 thin films were prepared by the sol-gel method. Various thickness of Pd buried layer was deposited by magnetron sputtering of a pure Pd target. The films were characterized using X-ray diffraction analysis and SEM. It was found that TiO2/Pd/TiO2 thin films have the p-type behavior while the pure TiO2 thin film is n-type semiconductor materials. We found that the structure of TiO2/Pd/TiO2 thin films with 10 s sputtering Pd layer has a better stability at 240 °C.

Abstract:Hydrogen (H2) molecules are easy to leak during production, storage, transportation and usage. Because of their flammability and explosive nature, quick and reliable dectection of H2 molecule is of great significance. Herein, an excellent H2 gas sensor has been realized based on Pd nanocrystal sensitized two-dimensional (2D) porous TiO2 (Pd/TiO2). The formation of 2D porous TiO2 with the removal of graphene oxide template has been monitored by an in-situ transmission electron microscope. It is found that the size of the GO template can be almost completely replicated by 2D TiO2. The Pd/TiO2 sensor exhibited an instantaneous response and a satisfactory low detection limit for H2 detection. These excellent gas-sensing performances (good selectivity, unique linearity response and high stability) can be attributed to the unique 2D porous structure and the synergistic effect between oxidized Pd and TiO2, including the unique adsorption properties of O2 or/and H2 on Pd/TiO2, the reaction between PdO and H2 gas, and the regulated depletion layer arising from p-type PdO to n-type TiO2. This work demonstrates a rational design and synthesis of highly efficient H2 sensitive materials for energy and manufacturing security.

Abstract:A novel dual mode sensing platform is constructed for highly selective detection of H2S, attributing to the efficient electrochemical (EC) and photoelectrochemical (PEC) signal responses of the TiO2/Bi2WO6/Ag heterojunction. On the one hand, TiO2/Bi2WO6/Ag heterojunction with excellent catalytic performance for the reduction of H2O2 could be employed act as a probe, providing a remarkable EC response through an amperometric i-t method. On the other hand, this hybrid provides a photoelectric beacon with a favorable energy-band configuration. More interestingly, the EC and PEC responses of the functionalized electrodes are proportionately decreased in response to the generation of Bi2S3 and Ag2S nanoparticles upon exposure to sulfide ions. The decreased EC and PEC signals could be ascribed to the poor catalytic properties and the recombination of photoexcited electron – hole pairs of the Bi2S3 and Ag2S. Under the optimal conditions, the dual mode sensor exhibits a wide linear response in the range from 0.5 μM to 300 μM with a detection limit of 0.08 μM for the detection of H2S. Enabled by this unique sensitization mechanism, the proposed sensing platform displays an excellent analytical performance with good selectivity, reproducibility and stability, which providing an alternative pathway of H2S detecting in practical application.

Abstract:The utilization of a heterogeneous nanojunction design has shown significant enhancements in the gas sensing capabilities of traditional metal oxide gas sensors. In this study, a novel room temperature H2S gas sensor employing Fe2O3 functionalized Ti3C2 MXene as the sensing material has been developed. This sensor exhibits a broad detection range (0.01-500 ppm), low detection limit (10 ppb), and rapid response/recovery times (10 s/15 s), making it ideal for ppb-level H2S detection. The exceptional gas sensitivity of Fe2O3/Ti3C2 composite to H2S can be attributed to several key factors. First, the unique layered frame structure of Fe2O3/Ti3C2 significantly amplifies the surface area of the hybrid material, enhancing the absorption and diffusion capabilities of H2S molecules. Second, the abundance of functional groups (-O, -OH, and -F) on the surface of Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets provides additional active sites for H2S adsorption, The density functional theory calculation confirms that the adsorption energy of the Fe2O3/Ti3C2 composite for H2S (-2.93 eV) is significantly lower than that of pure Fe2O3 (-2.37 eV) and Ti3C2 (-0.2 eV). Lastly, the remarkable metal conductivity of Ti3C2 MXene ensures efficient electron transfer, thereby enhancing overall sensing performance.

By using pyrolytic carbon as a transition layer between a Pd film and an anodic aluminum oxide substrate, a nanoporous Pd film sensor is fabricated (see figure) that has a remarkable sensing performance with the ability to detect both dilute and high concentrations of H-2 gas quickly and at room temperature.
One-Step Photochemical Deposition of Pdau Alloyed Nanoparticles on Tio2 Nanowires for Ultra-Sensitive H-2 Detection

Abstract:TiO2 nanostructures are widely used for H-2 detection in scientific and technological research fields, but how to detect ppm-level H-2 in a timely and sensitive manner at room temperature remains challenging. In this work, TiO2 nanowires were synthesized on a Ti foil substrate via the hydrothermal method, and then decorated with PdAu alloyed nanoparticles (NPs) via a one-step photochemical deposition method. What's more, the Pd/Au atomic ratio in alloyed NPs could be adjusted by just changing the Pd2+/Au3+ ratio in the precursor solution. H-2 sensing experiments indicate that sensitization with Pd or PdAu alloyed NPs makes TiO2 nanowire films highly sensitive to ppm-level H-2 at room temperature. The role of Au in alloyed NPs is estimated by comparing the sensing performance of PdAu@TiO2 with different Pd/Au ratios in alloyed NPs and references (e.g., TiO2, Au@TiO2 and Pd@TiO2). The results indicate that the as-synthesized PdAu@TiO2 with less than 25% Au in alloyed NPs exhibits higher sensitivity and a faster response than Pd@TiO2, and plausible enhancement mechanisms of the Au component in alloyed NPs on the performance of PdAu@TiO2 are also supplied.
Highly Selective H2S Gas Sensor Based on Ti3C2Tx MXene-Organic Composites

Abstract:Cost-effective and high-performance H2S sensors are required for human health and environmental monitoring. 2D transition-metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) are appealing candidates for gas sensing due to good conductivity and abundant surface functional groups but have been studied primarily for detecting NH3 and VOCs, with generally positive responses that are not highly selective to the target gases. Here, we report on a negative response of pristine Ti3C2Tx thin films for H2S gas sensing (in contrast to the other tested gases) and further optimization of the sensor performance using a composite of Ti3C2Tx flakes and conjugated polymers (poly[3,6-diamino-10-methylacridinium chloride-co-3,6-diaminoacridine-squaraine], PDS-Cl) with polar charged nitrogen. The composite, preserving the high selectivity of pristine Ti3C2Tx, exhibits an H2S sensing response of 2% at 5 ppm (a thirtyfold sensing enhancement) and a low limit of detection of 500 ppb. In addition, our density functional theory calculations indicate that the mixture of MXene surface functional groups needs to be taken into account to describe the sensing mechanism and the selectivity of the sensor in agreement with the experimental results. Thus, this report extends the application range of MXene-based composites to H2S sensors and deepens the understanding of their gas sensing mechanisms.
