Abstract:Let $U$ be a Morse function on a compact connected $m$-dimensional Riemannian manifold, $m \geq 2,$ satisfying $\min U=0$ and let $\mathcal{U} = \{x \in M \: : U(x) = 0\}$ be the set of global minimizers. Consider the stochastic algorithm $X^{(\beta)}:=(X^{(\beta)}(t))_{t\geq 0}$ defined on $N = M \setminus \mathcal{U},$ whose generator is$U \Delta \cdot-\beta\langle \nabla U,\nabla \cdot\rangle$, where $\beta\in\RR$ is a real parameter.We show that for $\beta>\frac{m}{2}-1,$ $X^{(\beta)}(t)$ converges a.s.\ as $t \rightarrow \infty$, toward a point $p \in \mathcal{U}$ and that each $p \in \mathcal{U}$ has a positive probability to be selected. On the other hand, for $\beta < \frac{m}{2}-1,$ the law of $(X^{(\beta)}(t))$ converges in total variation (at an exponential rate) toward the probability measure $\pi_{\beta}$ having density proportional to $U(x)^{-1-\beta}$ with respect to the Riemannian measure.

Abstract:We study the max-type recursive model introduced by Hu and Shi (J. Stat. Phys., 2018), which generalizes the model of Derrida and Retaux (J. Stat. Phys., 2014). We show that the class of geometric-type distributions are preserved by the model with geometric offspring distribution. The key result is a characterization for the long-time asymptotic behavior of the marginal distributions. From this result, we derive the conditional limit law and the asymptotics of the sustainability probability and the first moment in the critical case.

Abstract:We study an abstract damped wave equation. We prove that the solution of the damped wave equation becomes closer to the solution of a heat type equation as time tend to infinity. As an application of our approach, we also study the asymptotic behavior of the damped wave equation in Euclidean space under the geometric control condition.

Abstract:We study distributions $F$ on $[0,\infty)$ such that for some $T\le\infty$, $F^{*2}(x,x+T]\sim 2 F(x,x+T]$. The case $T=\infty$ corresponds to $F$ being subexponential, and our analysis shows that the properties for $T<\infty$ are, in fact, very similar to this classical case. A parallel theory is developed in the presence of densities. Applications are given to random walks, the key renewal theorem, compound Poisson process and Bellman-Harris branching processes.

Several assertions are proved about the estimation of the asymptotics of the probabilistic characteristics of strongly additive arithmetic functions, as well as additive functions of the class that have the same asymptotic behavior of the probabilistic characteristics, as for strongly additive arithmetic functions.

Abstract:The asymptotic study of a time-dependent function ƒ as the solution of a differential equation often leads to the question of whether its derivative vanishes at infinity. We show that a necessary and sufficient condition for this is that is what may be called asymptotically uniform. We generalize the result to higher order derivatives. We also show that the same property for ƒ itself is also necessary and sufficient for its one-sided improper integrals to exist. The article provides a broad study of such asymptotically uniform functions.

Abstract:Developing a thermodynamic theory of computation is a challenging task at the interface of non-equilibrium thermodynamics and computer science. In particular, this task requires dealing with difficulties such as stochastic halting times, unidirectional (possibly deterministic) transitions, and restricted initial conditions, features common in real-world computers. Here, we present a framework which tackles all such difficulties by extending the martingale theory of non-equilibrium thermodynamics to generic non-stationary Markovian processes, including those with broken detailed balance and/or absolute irreversibility. We derive several universal fluctuation relations and second-law-like inequalities that provide both lower and upper bounds on the intrinsic dissipation (mismatch cost) associated with any periodic process -- in particular the periodic processes underlying all current digital computation. Crucially, these bounds apply even if the process has stochastic stopping times, as it does in many computational machines. We illustrate our results with exhaustive numerical simulations of deterministic finite automata (DFA) processing bit strings, one of the fundamental models of computation from theoretical computer science. We also provide universal equalities and inequalities for the acceptance probability of words of a given length by a deterministic finite automaton in terms of thermodynamic quantities, and outline connections between computer science and stochastic resetting. Our results, while motivated from the computational context, are applicable far more broadly.

Abstract:In this Article, several aspects of the asymptotic dynamics of finite-dimensional open quantum systems are explored. First, after recalling a structure theorem for the peripheral map, we discuss sufficient conditions and a characterization for its unitarity. Interestingly, this is not always guaranteed due to the presence of permutations in the structure of the asymptotic map. Then, we show the connection between the asymptotic map and the modular theory by Tomita and Takesaki.

Abstract:Local kinetic and chemical equilibration is studied for Au+Au collisions at 10.7 AGeV in the microscopic Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics model (UrQMD). The UrQMD model exhibits dramatic deviations from equilibrium during the high density phase of the collision. Thermal and chemical equilibration of the hadronic matter seems to be established in the later stages during a quasi-isentropic expansion, observed in the central reaction cell ($S/A=S/A=s/\rho_B ~\cong~$ 12). At latest stages of the reactions (of order of 10 fm/c) the hadron energy spectra in the cell are nicely reproduced by Boltzmann distributions with a common rapidly dropping temperature. Hadron yields change drastically and at the late expansion stage follow closely those of an ideal gas statistical model. The detailed comparison with the UrQMD box calculations for infinite equilibrated matter is done. It also shows that the system in the central zone reaches the equilibrium at late stages of the reaction. The equation of state seems to be simple at late times: $P\cong0.12\epsilon$ which coincides with Shuryak predictions for the resonance gas. The contribution of the strange particles into the total energy density of the system in the central region of the reaction seems to be of order of 1-3 % (strange particle density in the central zone is negligibly small e.g. $\rho_S=0.008$). The time evolution of other thermodynamical variables in the cell is also presented.
