Abstract:Diffusion of impenetrable particles in a crowded one-dimensional channel is referred as the single file diffusion. The particles do not pass each other and the displacement of each individual particle is sub-diffusive. We analyse a simple realization of this single file diffusion problem where one dimensional Brownian point particles interact only by hard-core repulsion. We show that the large deviation function which characterizes the displacement of a tracer at large time can be computed via a mapping to a problem of non-interacting Brownian particles. We confirm recently obtained results of the one time distribution of the displacement and show how to extend them to the multi-time correlations. The probability distribution of the tracer position depends on whether we take annealed or quenched averages. In the quenched case we notice an exact relation between the distribution of the tracer and the distribution of the current. This relation is in fact much more general and would be valid for arbitrary single file diffusion. It allows in particular to get the full statistics of the tracer position for the symmetric simple exclusion process (SSEP) at density 1/2 in the quenched case.

Time changed spherical Brownian motions with longitudinal drifts

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the time change of the diffusion process on the 2-dimensional unit sphere generated by the Laplace-Beltrami operator, perturbed by means of a longitudinal vector field. First, this is done by addressing the problem of finding strong solutions to suitable time-nonlocal Kolmogorov equations, via a spectral decomposition approach. Next, the desired process is constructed as the composition of the aforementioned diffusion process and the inverse of a subordinator, and it is used to provide a stochastic representation of the solution of the involved time-nonlocal Kolmogorov equation, which in turn leads to the spectral decomposition of its probability density function. A family of operators induced by the process is then adopted to provide very weak solutions of the same time-nonlocal Kolmogorov equation with much less regular initial data. From the spectral decomposition results we also get some bounds on the speed of convergence to the stationary state, proving that the process can be considered an anomalous diffusion. These results improve some known ones in terms of both the presence of a perturbation and the lack of regularity of the initial data.

Abstract:We derive diffusion constants and martingales for senile random walks with the help of a time-change. We provide direct computations of the diffusion constants for the time-changed walks. Alternatively, the values of these constants can be derived from martingales associated with the time-changed walks. Using an inverse time-change, the diffusion constants for senile random walks are then obtained via these martingales. When the walks are diffusive, weak convergence to Brownian motion can be shown using a martingale functional limit theorem.

Abstract:We study large deviations for the time average of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process raised to an arbitrary power. We prove that beyond a critical value, large deviations are subexponential in time, with a non-convex rate function whose main coefficient is given by the solution to a Hamilton-Jacobi problem. Although a similar problem was addressed in a recent work, the originality of the paper is to provide a short, self-contained proof of this result through a couple of standard large deviations arguments.

Large Deviations for Small Noise Diffusions Over Long Time

Abstract:We study two problems. First, we consider the large deviation behavior of empirical measures of certain diffusion processes as, simultaneously, the time horizon becomes large and noise becomes vanishingly small. The law of large numbers (LLN) of the empirical measure in this asymptotic regime is given by the unique equilibrium of the noiseless dynamics. Due to degeneracy of the noise in the limit, the methods of Donsker and Varadhan (1976) are not directly applicable and new ideas are needed. Second, we study a system of slow-fast diffusions where both the slow and the fast components have vanishing noise on their natural time scales. This time the LLN is governed by a degenerate averaging principle in which local equilibria of the noiseless system obtained from the fast dynamics describe the asymptotic evolution of the slow component. We establish a large deviation principle that describes probabilities of divergence from this behavior. On the one hand our methods require stronger assumptions than the nondegenerate settings, while on the other hand the rate functions take simple and explicit forms that have striking differences from their nondegenerate counterparts.

Abstract:Studying the behaviour of Markov processes at boundary points of the state space has a long history, dating back all the way to William Feller. With different motivations in mind entrance and exit questions have been explored for different discontinuous Markov processes in the past two decades. Proofs often use time-change techniques and rely on problem specific knowledge such branching or scaling properties. In this article we ask how far techniques can be pushed with as little as possible model assumptions. We give sharp conditions on time-changed Lévy processes to allow entrance and regular boundary point at infinity. The main tool we introduce is a generalised scaling property that holds for all time-changed Lévy processes and can be used to extend scaling arguments for self-similar Markov processes.

Abstract:Motivated in part by a problem in simulated tempering (a form of Markov chain Monte Carlo) we seek to minimise, in a suitable sense, the time it takes a (regular) diffusion with instantaneous reflection at 0 and 1 to travel to $1$ and then return to the origin (the so-called commute time from 0 to 1). Substantially extending results in a previous paper, we consider a dynamic version of this problem where the control mechanism is related to the diffusion's drift via the corresponding scale function. We are only able to choose the drift at each point at the time of first visiting that point and the drift is constrained on a set of the form $[0,\ell)\cup(i,1]$. This leads to a type of stochastic control problem with infinite dimensional state.

Abstract:Using martingale theory, we compute, in very few lines, exact analytical expressions for various first-exit-time statistics associated with one-dimensional biased diffusion. Examples include the distribution for the first-exit time from an interval, moments for the first-exit site, and functionals of the position, which involve memory and time integration. As a key example, we compute analytically the mean area swept by a biased diffusion until it escapes an interval that may be asymmetric and have arbitrary length. The mean area allows us to derive the hitherto unexplored cross-correlation function between the first-exit time and the first-exit site, which vanishes only for exit problems from symmetric intervals. As a colophon, we explore connections of our results with gambling, showing that betting on the time-integrated value of a losing game it is possible to design a strategy that leads to a net average win.

Doubly stochastic continuous time random walk

Abstract:Since its introduction, some sixty years ago, the Montroll-Weiss continuous time random walk has found numerous applications due its ease of use and ability to describe both regular and anomalous diffusion. Yet, despite its broad applicability and generality, the model cannot account for effects coming from random diffusivity fluctuations which have been observed in the motion of asset prices and molecules. To bridge this gap, we introduce a doubly stochastic version of the model in which waiting times between jumps are replaced with a fluctuating jump rate. We show that this newly added layer of randomness gives rise to a rich phenomenology while keeping the model fully tractable -- allowing us to explore general properties and illustrate them with examples. In particular, we show that the model presented herein provides an alternative pathway to Brownian yet non-Gaussian diffusion which has been observed and explained via diffusing diffusivity approaches.

Abstract:In this work, we analyse the metastability of non-reversible diffusion processes on a bounded domain when admits the decomposition and . In this setting, we first show that, when , the principal eigenvalue of the generator of with Dirichlet boundary conditions on the boundary of is exponentially close to the inverse of the mean exit time from , uniformly in the initial conditions within the compacts of . The asymptotic behavior of the law of the exit time in this limit is also obtained. The main novelty of these first results follows from the consideration of non-reversible elliptic diffusions whose associated dynamical systems admit equilibrium points on . In a second time, when in addition , we derive a new sharp asymptotic equivalent in the limit of the principal eigenvalue of the generator of the process and of its mean exit time from . Our proofs combine tools from large deviations theory and from semiclassical analysis, and heavily rely on the notion of quasi-stationary distribution.

Abstract:We present a perspective of simple models of nonequilibrium directed transport described in terms of a Langevin equation formalism. We consider a Brownian particle under various circumstances and driven by thermal (equilibrium) and non-thermal (active) fluctuations. Three examples of startling behavior are unveiled: giant transport, multiple current reversal and negative mobility.

Abstract:We propose diffusion-like equations with time and space fractional derivatives of the distributed order for the kinetic description of anomalous diffusion and relaxation phenomena, whose diffusion exponent varies with time and which, correspondingly, can not be viewed as self-affine random processes possessing a unique Hurst exponent. We prove the positivity of the solutions of the proposed equations and establish the relation to the Continuous Time Random Walk theory. We show that the distributed order time fractional diffusion equation describes the sub-diffusion random process which is subordinated to the Wiener process and whose diffusion exponent diminishes in time (retarding sub-diffusion) leading to superslow diffusion, for which the square displacement grows logarithmically in time. We also demonstrate that the distributed order space fractional diffusion equation describes super-diffusion phenomena when the diffusion exponent grows in time (accelerating super-diffusion).
Brownian motion with asymptotically normal reflection in unbounded domains: from transience to stability

Abstract:We quantify the asymptotic behaviour of multidimensional drifltess diffusions in domains unbounded in a single direction, with asymptotically normal reflections from the boundary. We identify the critical growth/contraction rates of the domain that separate stability, null recurrence and transience. In the stable case we prove existence and uniqueness of the invariant distribution and establish the polynomial rate of decay of its tail. We also establish matching polynomial upper and lower bounds on the rate of convergence to stationarity in total variation. All exponents are explicit in the model parameters that determine the asymptotics of the growth rate of the domain, the interior covariance, and the reflection vector field. Proofs are probabilistic, and use upper and lower tail bounds for additive functionals up to return times to compact sets, for which we develop novel sub/supermartingale criteria, applicable to general continuous semimartingales. Narrowing domains fall outside of the standard literature, in part because boundary local time can accumulate arbitrarily rapidly. Establishing Feller continuity (essential for characterizing stability) thus requires an extension of the usual approach. Our recurrence/transience classification extends previous work on strictly normal reflections, and expands the range of phenomena observed across all dimensions. For all recurrent cases, we provide quantitative information through upper and lower bounds on tails of return times to compact sets (see <a class="link-external link-https" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDDDWdbPx74" rel="external noopener nofollow">this https URL</a> for a short YouTube video describing the results).

Abstract:We study a class of high frequency path functionals of a diffusion with a singular threshold, including the case of a sticky-reflection, and establish convergence to the local time. These functionals are built upon a test function and a normalizing sequence. This advances existing results on sticky, oscillating (regime-switching) and skew or reflecting diffusions in several directions. First, it considers any normalizing sequence that diverges slower than $n$. Second, it establishes the result for a sticky-oscillating-skew (SOS) threshold. Based on this, and an approximation of the occupation time, we devise consistent skew and stickiness parameter estimators.
