Abstract:In the asymptotic theory of quantum hypothesis testing, the minimal error probability of the first kind jumps sharply from zero to one when the error exponent of the second kind passes by the point of the relative entropy of the two states in an increasing way. This is well known as the direct part and strong converse of quantum Stein's lemma. Here we look into the behavior of this sudden change and have make it clear how the error of first kind grows smoothly according to a lower order of the error exponent of the second kind, and hence we obtain the second-order asymptotics for quantum hypothesis testing. This actually implies quantum Stein's lemma as a special case. Meanwhile, our analysis also yields tight bounds for the case of finite sample size. These results have potential applications in quantum information theory. Our method is elementary, based on basic linear algebra and probability theory. It deals with the achievability part and the optimality part in a unified fashion.

Abstract:The hypothesis testing problem of two quantum states is treated. We show a new inequality between the error of the first kind and the second kind, which complements the result of Hiai and Petz to establish the quantum version of Stein's lemma. The inequality is also used to show a bound on the first kind error when the power exponent for the second kind error exceeds the quantum relative entropy, and the bound yields the strong converse in the quantum hypothesis testing. Finally, we discuss the relation between the bound and the power exponent derived by Han and Kobayashi in the classical hypothesis testing.

Abstract:We study how to extend Sanov theorem to the quantum setting. Although a quantum version of the Sanov theorem was proposed in Bjelakovic et al (Commun. Math. Phys., 260, p.659 (2005)), the classical case of their statement is not the same as Sanov theorem because Sanov theorem discusses the behavior of the empirical distribution when the empirical distribution is different from the true distribution, but they studied a problem related to quantum hypothesis testing, whose classical version can be shown by classical Sanov theorem. We propose another quantum version of Sanov theorem by considering the quantum analog of the empirical distribution.

Abstract:We study a variant of quantum hypothesis testing wherein an additional 'inconclusive' measurement outcome is added, allowing one to abstain from attempting to discriminate the hypotheses. The error probabilities are then conditioned on a successful attempt, with inconclusive trials disregarded. We completely characterise this task in both the single-shot and asymptotic regimes, providing exact formulas for the optimal error probabilities. In particular, we prove that the asymptotic error exponent of discriminating any two quantum states $\rho$ and $\sigma$ is given by the Hilbert projective metric $D_{\max}(\rho\|\sigma) + D_{\max}(\sigma \| \rho)$ in asymmetric hypothesis testing, and by the Thompson metric $\max \{ D_{\max}(\rho\|\sigma), D_{\max}(\sigma \| \rho) \}$ in symmetric hypothesis testing. This endows these two quantities with fundamental operational interpretations in quantum state discrimination. Our findings extend to composite hypothesis testing, where we show that the asymmetric error exponent with respect to any convex set of density matrices is given by a regularisation of the Hilbert projective metric. We apply our results also to quantum channels, showing that no advantage is gained by employing adaptive or even more general discrimination schemes over parallel ones, in both the asymmetric and symmetric settings. Our state discrimination results make use of no properties specific to quantum mechanics and are also valid in general probabilistic theories.

The Chernoff lower bound for symmetric quantum hypothesis testing

Abstract:We consider symmetric hypothesis testing in quantum statistics, where the hypotheses are density operators on a finite-dimensional complex Hilbert space, representing states of a finite quantum system. We prove a lower bound on the asymptotic rate exponents of Bayesian error probabilities. The bound represents a quantum extension of the Chernoff bound, which gives the best asymptotically achievable error exponent in classical discrimination between two probability measures on a finite set. In our framework, the classical result is reproduced if the two hypothetic density operators commute. Recently, it has been shown elsewhere [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98 (2007) 160504] that the lower bound is achievable also in the generic quantum (noncommutative) case. This implies that our result is one part of the definitive quantum Chernoff bound.

Abstract:One of the key tasks in physics is to perform measurements in order to determine the state of a system. Often, measurements are aimed at determining the values of physical parameters, but one can also ask simpler questions, such as "is the system in state A or state B?". In quantum mechanics, the latter type of measurements can be studied and optimized using the framework of quantum hypothesis testing. In many cases one can explicitly find the optimal measurement in the limit where one has simultaneous access to a large number $n$ of identical copies of the system, and estimate the expected error as $n$ becomes large. Interestingly, error estimates turn out to involve various quantum information theoretic quantities such as relative entropy, thereby giving these quantities operational meaning. In this paper we consider the application of quantum hypothesis testing to quantum many-body systems and quantum field theory. We review some of the necessary background material, and study in some detail the situation where the two states one wants to distinguish are parametrically close. The relevant error estimates involve quantities such as the variance of relative entropy, for which we prove a new inequality. We explore the optimal measurement strategy for spin chains and two-dimensional conformal field theory, focusing on the task of distinguishing reduced density matrices of subsystems. The optimal strategy turns out to be somewhat cumbersome to implement in practice, and we discuss a possible alternative strategy and the corresponding errors.

Abstract:Recently, it is well recognized that hypothesis testing has deep relations with other topics in quantum information theory as well as in classical information theory. These relations enable us to derive precise evaluation in the finite-length setting. However, such usefulness of hypothesis testing is not limited to information theoretical topics. For example, it can be used for verification of entangled state and quantum computer as well as guaranteeing the security of keys generated via quantum key distribution. In this talk, we overview these kinds of applications of hypothesis testing.

Abstract:Alternative exact expressions are derived for the minimum error probability of a hypothesis test discriminating among $M$ quantum states. The first expression corresponds to the error probability of a binary hypothesis test with certain parameters; the second involves the optimization of a given information-spectrum measure. Particularized in the classical-quantum channel coding setting, this characterization implies the tightness of two existing converse bounds; one derived by Matthews and Wehner using hypothesis-testing, and one obtained by Hayashi and Nagaoka via an information-spectrum approach.

Abstract:With the recent development of quantum information theory, some attempts exist to construct information theory beyond quantum theory. Here we consider hypothesis testing relative entropy and one-shot classical capacity, that is, the optimal rate of classical information transmitted by using a single channel under a constraint of a certain error probability, in general physical theories where states and measurements are operationally defined. Then we obtain the upper bound of one-shot classical capacity by generalizing the method given by Wang and Renner [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 200501 (2012)]. Also, we derive the lower bound of the capacity by showing the existence of a good code that can transmit classical information with a certain error probability. Applying the above two bounds, we prove the asymptotic equivalence between classical capacity and hypothesis testing relative entropy even in any general physical theory.

Abstract:Hooley conjectured that $G(x;q) \ll x\log q$, as soon as $q\to +\infty$, where $G(x;q)$ represents the variance of primes $p \leq x$ in arithmetic progressions modulo $q$, weighted by $\log p$. In this paper, we study $G_\eta(x;q)$, a function similar to $G(x;q)$, but including the weighting factor $\eta\left(\frac{p}{x}\right)$, which has a dampening effect on the values of $G_\eta$. Our study is motivated by the disproof of Hooley's conjecture by Fiorilli and Martin in the range $q \asymp \log \log x$. Even though this weighting factor dampens the values, we still prove that an estimation of the form $G_\eta(x;q) \ll x\log q$ is false in the same range.

Abstract:Symmetry plays a crucial role in quantum physics, dictating the behavior and dynamics of physical systems. In this paper, We develop a hypothesis-testing framework for quantum dynamics symmetry using a limited number of queries to the unknown unitary operation and establish the quantum max-relative entropy lower bound for the type-II error. We construct optimal ancilla-free protocols that achieve optimal type-II error probability for testing time-reversal symmetry (T-symmetry) and diagonal symmetry (Z-symmetry) with limited queries. Contrasting with the advantages of indefinite causal order strategies in various quantum information processing tasks, we show that parallel, adaptive, and indefinite causal order strategies have equal power for our tasks. We establish optimal protocols for T-symmetry testing and Z-symmetry testing for 6 and 5 queries, respectively, from which we infer that the type-II error exhibits a decay rate of $\mathcal{O}(m^{-2})$ with respect to the number of queries $m$. This represents a significant improvement over the basic repetition protocols without using global entanglement, where the error decays at a slower rate of $\mathcal{O}(m^{-1})$.

Abstract:Taken traditionally as a no-go theorem against the theorization of inductive processes, Duhem-Quine thesis may interfere with the essence of statistical inference. This difficulty can be resolved by Micro-Macro duality \cite{Oj03, Oj05} which clarifies the importance of specifying the pertinent aspects and accuracy relevant to concrete contexts of scientific discussions and which ensures the matching between what to be described and what to describe in the form of the validity of duality relations. This consolidates the foundations of the inverse problem, induction method, and statistical inference crucial for the sound relations between theory and experiments. To achieve the purpose, we propose here Large Deviation Strategy (LDS for short) on the basis of Micro-Macro duality, quadrality scheme, and large deviation principle. According to the quadrality scheme emphasizing the basic roles played by the dynamics, algebra of observables together with its representations and universal notion of classifying space, LDS consists of four levels and we discuss its first and second levels in detail, aiming at establishing statistical inference concerning observables and states. By efficient use of the central measure, we will establish a quantum version of Sanov's theorem, the Bayesian escort predictive state and the widely applicable information criteria for quantum states in LDS second level. Finally, these results are reexamined in the context of quantum estimation theory, and organized as quantum model selection, i.e., a quantum version of model selection.

Barycentric bounds on the error exponents of quantum hypothesis exclusion

Abstract:Quantum state exclusion is an operational task that has significance in studying foundational questions related to interpreting quantum theory. In such a task, one is given a system whose state is randomly selected from a finite set, and the goal is to identify a state from the set that is not the true state of the system. An error, i.e., an unsuccessful exclusion, occurs if and only if the state identified is the true state. In this paper, we study the optimal error probability of quantum state exclusion and its error exponent -- the rate at which the error probability decays asymptotically -- from an information-theoretic perspective. Our main finding is a single-letter upper bound on the error exponent of state exclusion given by the multivariate log-Euclidean Chernoff divergence, and we prove that this improves upon the best previously known upper bound. We also extend our analysis to the more complicated task of quantum channel exclusion, and we establish a single-letter and efficiently computable upper bound on its error exponent, even assuming the use of adaptive strategies. We derive both upper bounds, for state and channel exclusion, based on one-shot analysis and formulate them as a type of multivariate divergence measure called a barycentric Chernoff divergence. Moreover, our result on channel exclusion has implications in two important special cases. First, for the special case of two hypotheses, our upper bound provides the first known efficiently computable upper bound on the error exponent of symmetric binary channel discrimination. Second, for the special case of classical channels, we show that our upper bound is achievable by a nonadaptive strategy, thus solving the exact error exponent of classical channel exclusion and generalising a similar result on symmetric binary classical channel discrimination.
