Abstract:We present several new inequalities for trigonometric sums. Among others, we show that the inequality $$ \sum_{k=1}^n (n-k+1)(n-k+2)k\sin(kx) > \frac{2}{9} \sin(x) \bigl( 1+2\cos(x) \bigr)^2 $$ holds for all $n\geq 1$ and $x\in (0, 2\pi/3)$. The constant factor $2/9$ is sharp. This refines the classical Szegö-Schweitzer inequality which states that the sine sum is positive for all $n\geq 1$ and $x\in (0,2 \pi/3)$. Moreover, as an application of one of our results, we obtain a two-parameter class of absolutely monotonic functions.

Abstract:The aim of this note is to show that any algebraic relation over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ between the values of the trigonometric functions sine and cosine at algebraic points can be derived from the Pythagorean identity and the angle addition formulas. Abstract:In a recent paper Vinay, Shweta, and Harshitha use Ramanujan's theta functions to prove several trigonometric equalities. Elementary proofs for some of these equalities were given by the author and Zeilberger, then for all but one by Berndt, Kim, and Zaharescu. The remaining equality was proved in the same paper of Berndt, Kim, and Zaharescu in a non-totally elementary way, in that it uses a result of Gauss in cyclotomy: here we give an elementary proof of the same equality. Also we show how to use automated tools to discover and prove some generalizations.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a symplectic proof of the Horn inequalities on eigenvalues of a sum of two Hermitian matrices with given spectra. Our method is a combination of tropical calculus for matrix eigenvalues, combinatorics of planar networks, and estimates for the Liouville volume. As a corollary, we give a tropical description of the Duistermaat-Heckman measure on the Horn polytope.

Abstract:In this article, the authors introduce Qi's normalized remainder of the Maclaurin series expansion of Qi's normalized remainder for the cosine function. By virtue of a monotonicity rule for the quotient of two series and with the aid of an increasing monotonicity of a sequence involving the quotient of two consecutive non-zero Bernoulli numbers, they prove the logarithmic convexity of Qi's normalized remainder. In view of a higher order derivative formula for the quotient of two functions, they expand the logarithm of Qi's normalized remainder into a Maclaurin series whose coefficients are expressed in terms of determinants of a class of specific Hessenberg matrices. In light of a monotonicity rule for the quotient of two series, they present the monotonicity of the ratio between two normalized remainders. Finally, the authors connect two of their main results with the generalized hypergeometric functions.
