Abstract:Two‐dimensional layered graphene‐like crystals including transition‐metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have received extensive research interest due to their diverse electronic, valleytronic, and chemical properties, with the corresponding optoelectronics and catalysis application being actively explored. However, the recent surge in two‐dimensional materials science is accompanied by equally great challenges, such as defect engineering in large‐scale sample synthesis. It is necessary to elucidate the effect of structural defects on the electronic properties in order to develop an application‐specific strategy for defect engineering. Here, two aspects of the existing knowledge of native defects in two‐dimensional crystals are reviewed. One is the point defects emerging in graphene and hexagonal boron nitride, as probed by atomically resolved electron microscopy, and their local electronic properties, as measured by single‐atom electron energy‐loss spectroscopy. The other will focus on the point defects in TMDs and their influence on the electronic structure, photoluminescence, and electric transport properties. This review of atomic defects in two‐dimensional materials will offer a clear picture of the defect physics involved to demonstrate the local modulation of the electronic properties and possible benefits in potential applications in magnetism and catalysis.

Abstract:Abstract 2D materials show wide‐ranging physical properties with their electronic bandgaps varying from zero to several electronvolts, offering a rich platform to explore novel electronic and optoelectronic functions. Notably, atomically thin 2D materials are well suited for integration in optoelectronic circuits, because of their ultrathin body, strong light–matter interactions, and compatibility with the current silicon photonic technology. In this paper, an overview of the state of the art of using 2D materials in optoelectronic devices and integration is provided. The optoelectronic properties of 2D materials and their typical electronic and optoelectronic applications including light sources, optical modulators, photodetectors, field‐effect transistors, and logic circuits are summarized. The device configurations, operation mechanisms, and device figures‐of‐merit are introduced and discussed. By discussing the recent advances, future trends, and existing challenges of 2D materials and their optoelectronic devices, this review has provided an insight into the perspectives of 2D materials for optoelectronic integration and may guide the development of this field within the research community.

Abstract:Heterostructures, such as van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures, provide a versatile platform for engineering the physical properties of two-dimensional (2D) layered materials, spanning electronics, mechanics, optics, as well as electron-phonon couplings. Furthermore, vdW heterostructures, which are composed of metal/semiconductor or semiconductor/semiconductor combinations, not only maintain the unique properties of their individual constituents but also exhibit tunable physical and chemical properties that can be externally adjusted through strain, heat, and electric fields. These externally tunable properties offer significant advances in the fields of solid-state devices and renewable energy applications. Additionally, 2D material-based heterostructures, such as those composed of 0D clusters or quantum dots, as well as 1D nanotubes/wires in combination with 2D materials, also show immense potential for advancing next-generation nanodevices. The vast design space of vdW heterostructures enables their versatile applications spanning numerous fields, such as light-emitting diodes, field-effect transistors, photocatalysis, solar cells, photodetectors, and so on. In the Special Issue of Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, entitled "Two-dimensional Materials-based Heterostructures for Next-generation Nanodevices", we have gathered a comprehensive collection of 14 articles, presenting the latest achievements in the fields of designing novel 2D materials and 2D heterostructures. Below, we have briefly condensed the essential research findings from these studies.

Abstract:2D materials are promising but remain to be further explored, with respect to their usage in various optoelectronic devices. Generally, 2D materials exhibit far less than ideal absorption due to their thickness, limiting their deployment in practical optoelectronic applications. To address this challenge, extensive research has been performed utilizing different designs, such as distributed Bragg reflector microcavities, metallic reflectors, photonic crystal nanocavities, and plasmonic nanostructures, to confine light within 2D materials and increase light absorption. Recent progresses in enhancing light absorption in graphene and other 2D materials such as transition metal dichalcogenides and phosphorene are reviewed. Some physical mechanisms that realize enhanced absorption in 2D materials, as well as their potential applications are also discussed.

Abstract:The past one and a half decades have witnessed the tremendous progress of two-dimensional (2D) crystals, including graphene, transition-metal dichalcogenides, black phosphorus, MXenes, hexagonal boron nitride, etc., in a variety of fields. The key to their success is their unique structural, electrical, mechanical and optical properties. Herein, this paper gives a comprehensive summary on the recent advances in 2D materials for optoelectronic approaches with the emphasis on the morphology and structure, optical properties, synthesis methods, as well as detailed optoelectronic applications. Additionally, the challenges and perspectives in the current development of 2D materials are also summarized and indicated. Therefore, this review can provide a reference for further explorations and innovations of 2D material-based optoelectronics devices.

Abstract:Over the past 70 years, the semiconductor industry has undergone transformative changes, largely driven by the miniaturization of devices and the integration of innovative structures and materials. Two-dimensional (2D) materials like transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and graphene are pivotal in overcoming the limitations of silicon-based technologies, offering innovative approaches in transistor design and functionality, enabling atomic-thin channel transistors and monolithic 3D integration. We review the important progress in the application of 2D materials in future information technology, focusing in particular on microelectronics and optoelectronics. We comprehensively summarize the key advancements across material production, characterization metrology, electronic devices, optoelectronic devices, and heterogeneous integration on silicon. A strategic roadmap and key challenges for the transition of 2D materials from basic research to industrial development are outlined. To facilitate such a transition, key technologies and tools dedicated to 2D materials must be developed to meet industrial standards, and the employment of AI in material growth, characterizations, and circuit design will be essential. It is time for academia to actively engage with industry to drive the next 10 years of 2D material research.

Abstract:In the past few years, two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) materials have attracted increasing attention of the research community, owing to their unique electronic and optical properties, ranging from the valley–spin coupling to the indirect-to-direct bandgap transition when scaling the materials from multi-layer to monolayer. These properties are appealing for the development of novel electronic and optoelectronic devices with important applications in the broad fields of communication, computation, and healthcare. One of the key features of the TMDC family is the indirect-to-direct bandgap transition that occurs when the material thickness decreases from multilayer to monolayer, which is favorable for many photonic applications. TMDCs have also demonstrated unprecedented flexibility and versatility for constructing a wide range of heterostructures with atomic-level control over their layer thickness that is also free of lattice mismatch issues. As a result, layered TMDCs in combination with other 2D materials have the potential for realizing novel high-performance optoelectronic devices over a broad operating spectral range. In this article, we review the recent progress in the synthesis of 2D TMDCs and optoelectronic devices research. We also discuss the challenges facing the scalable applications of the family of 2D materials and provide our perspective on the opportunities offered by these materials for future generations of nanophotonics technology.

Abstract:Flexible electronics is the research field with interdisciplinary crossing and integration. It shows the promising advantages of novel device configurations, low-cost and low-power consumption due to their flexible and soft characteristics. Atomic layered two-dimensional (2D) materials especially transition metal dichalcogenides, have triggered great interest in ultra-thin 2D flexible electronic devices and optoelectronic devices because of their direct and tunable bandgaps, excellent electrical, optical, mechanical, and thermal properties. This review aims to provide the recent progress in 2D TMDs and their applications in flexible electronics. The fundamental electrical properties and mechanical properties of materials, flexible device configurations, and their performance in transistors, sensors, and photodetectors are thoroughly discussed. At last, some perspectives are given on the open challenges and prospects for 2D TMDs flexible electronic devices and new device opportunities.

Abstract:<p>Graphene and the following derivative 2D materials have been demonstrated to exhibit rich distinct optoelectronic properties, such as broadband optical response, strong and tunable light–mater interactions, and fast relaxations in the flexible nanoscale. Combining with optical platforms like fibers, waveguides, grating, and resonators, these materials has spurred a variety of active and passive applications recently. Herein, the optical and electrical properties of graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, black phosphorus, MXene, and their derivative van der Waals heterostructures are comprehensively reviewed, followed by the design and fabrication of these 2D material‐based optical structures in implementation. Next, distinct devices, ranging from lasers to light emitters, frequency convertors, modulators, detectors, plasmonic generators, and sensors, are introduced. Finally, the state‐of‐art investigation progress of 2D material‐based optoelectronics offers a promising way to realize new conceptual and high‐performance applications for information science and nanotechnology. The outlook on the development trends and important research directions are also put forward.</p>
