Abstract:This work reports the dielectric behavior of the biopolymer ethyl cellulose (EC) observed from transient currents experiments under the action of a direct current (DC) electric field (~107 V/m) under vacuum conditions. The viscoelastic response of the EC was evaluated using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), observing a mechanical relaxation related to glass transition of around ~402 K. Furthermore, we propose a mathematical framework that describes the transient current in EC using a fractional differential equation, whose solution involves the Mittag–Leffler function. The fractional order, between 0 and 1, is related to the energy dissipation rate and the molecular mobility of the polymer. Subsequently, the conduction mechanisms are considered, on the one hand, the phenomena that occur through the polymer–electrode interface and, on the other hand, those which manifest themselves in the bulk material. Finally, alternating current (AC) conductivity measurements above the glass transition temperature (~402 K) and in a frequency domain from 20 Hz to 2 MHz were carried out, observing electrical conduction described by the segmental movements of the polymeric chains. Its electrical properties also position EC as a potential candidate for electrical, electronics, and mechatronics applications.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to understand the conductance mechanisms of ethyl cellulose (EC) films under direct - current (DC) and alternating - current (AC) electric fields. Specifically, the main research problems include: 1. **Dielectric behavior of ethyl cellulose**: The dielectric behavior of ethyl cellulose was studied by transient current experiments under the condition of applying a direct - current electric field (~10^7 V/m) in a vacuum. 2. **Relationship between molecular structure and conductance**: The viscoelastic response of ethyl cellulose was evaluated by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and its glass - transition temperature was determined to be approximately 402 K, thereby exploring the influence of molecular structure on conductance properties. 3. **Mathematical description of transient current**: A mathematical framework based on fractional - order differential equations was proposed to describe the transient current in ethyl cellulose. The solution of this equation involves the Mittag - Leffler function. The fractional - order (between 0 and 1) is related to the energy dissipation rate and the molecular mobility of the polymer. 4. **Conduction mechanisms in the interface and the bulk**: Two types of conduction mechanisms were considered: one is the phenomenon that occurs through the polymer - electrode interface, and the other is the phenomenon that occurs in the material bulk. 5. **Alternating - current conductance characteristics**: Alternating - current conductance measurements were carried out in the frequency range from 20 Hz to 2 MHz under the condition of being above the glass - transition temperature (approximately 402 K), and it was observed that the conductance was caused by the movement of polymer chain segments. 6. **Potential for application**: The electrical properties of ethyl cellulose were studied to provide a basis for its potential uses in electrical, electronic and electromechanical applications. Through these studies, the authors aim to reveal the conductance mechanisms of ethyl cellulose films under different electric field conditions and provide theoretical support for the development of new polymer materials.
