Abstract:Regenerated cellulose/ionic liquids (ILs)-reduced graphene oxide (IRGO) nanocomposites have been prepared via a simple and green method based on 1-allyl-3-methylimidazoliun chloride (AmimCl). To one's surprise, it is found that the presence of a small amount of IRGO sheets can largely decelerate the dissolution of cellulose in AmimCl, and thus the thermal and mechanical properties of resultant cellulose/IRGO nanocomposites could be controlled simply by changing the dissolution time. Our results suggest that the residual cellulose fibrils with micrometre size are beneficial to the thermal stabilities of regenerated cellulose/IRGO films when short dissolution time is used. However, for obtaining cellulose/IRGO nanocomposites with improved mechanical properties, full dissolution and mixture of cellulose in IRGO/AmimCl solution with prolonged time are required. Compared with the regenerated pure cellulose film, our cellulose/IRGO nanocomposite prepared with dissolution time of 4 h exhibits about 23 degrees C increase in decomposition temperature, and 10.7% increase in tensile strength and remarkably 387.5% increase in strain at break, respectively.

Besides, the regenerated cellulose can be used for textiles, degradable membranes, hydrogels/aerogels, etc. But the regenerated mechanism of cellulose remains ambiguous. In this work, a Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation is reported for the cellulose regeneration from a cellulose/1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (BmimOAc)/water mixture. To investigate the microcosmic effects of the anti-solvents, we analyzed the structures and H-bonds of BmimOAc-nH2O and cellobiose-ILs-nH2O (n = 0–6) clusters. It can be found that when n ≥ 5 in the BmimOAc-nH2O clusters, the solvent-separated ion pairs (SIPs) play a dominant position in the system. With the increasing numbers of water molecules, the cation-anion interaction can be separated by water to reduce the effects of ILs on cellulose dissolution. Furthermore, the BmimOAc-nH2O and cellobiose-ILs (n = 0–6) clusters tend to be a more stable structure with high hydration in an aqueous solution. When the water molecules were added to the system, H-bonds can be formed among H2O, the hydroxyl of cellulose, and the oxygen of OAc. Therefore, the interactions between cellobiose and ILs will be decreased to promote cellulose regeneration. This work would provide some help to understand the mechanism of the cellulose regeneration from the view of theoretical calculation.

Liquid Crystalline Phase and Gel-Sol Transitions for Concentrated Microcrystalline Cellulose (Mcc)/1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium Acetate (emimac) Solutions

Abstract:Liquid crystalline (LC) phase transition and gel-sol transition in the solutions of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and ionic liquid (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate, EMIMAc) have been investigated through a combination of polarized optical microscope (POM) observation and rheological measurements. Molecular LC phase forms at the 10 wt % cellulose concentration, as observed by POM, whereas the critical gel point is 12.5 wt % by rheological measurements according to the Winter and Chambon theory, for which the loss tangent, tan δ, shows frequency independence. Dramatic decreases of G' and G'' in the phase transition temperature range during temperature sweep are observed due to disassembling of the LC domain junctions. The phase diagram describing the LC phase and gel-sol transitions is obtained and the associated mechanisms are elucidated. A significant feature shown in the phase diagram is the presence of a narrow lyotropic LC solution region, which potentially has a great importance for the cellulose fiber wet spinning.
Determination of intrinsic viscosity-molecular weight relationship for cellulose in BmimAc/DMSO solutions

Abstract:For simply and accurately determining molecular weight of cellulose, an ionic liquid mixed with a co-solvent, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate/dimethyl sulfoxide (BmimAc/DMSO) (1:1, w/w) was used and dissolved cellulose well at ambient temperature. During the dissolution process no degradation of cellulose was observed, and all the resultant cellulose/BmimAc/DMSO solutions were transparent and stable. These advantages make it as an ideal solvent system to build a new characteristic method of cellulose’s molecular weight by the measurement of the intrinsic viscosity [η], which is significantly better than the currently used solvent systems. [η] of solutions of nine cellulose samples was measured by using rheometer with cylinder fixture and Ubbelohde viscometer, respectively. The [η] values obtained by these two methods were well consistent. The degree of polymerization (DP) of these cellulose samples was determined by Copper (II) ethylenediamine method. Then the molecular weight and its distribution of representative samples were cross-checked by gel permeation chromatography for soluble derivatives of cellulose. As a result, a relationship DP = 134 [η]1.2 was built, suitable for DPs in the range of 220–1400. The uncertainty of this relationship was estimated to be 5 %. This work provided a simple, accurate and reliable method for determining [η] and the molecular weight of cellulose.

Phase Transition And Rheological Behaviors Of Concentrated Cellulose/Ionic Liquid Solutions

Abstract:The phase transition and rheological behaviors of concentrated solutions of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) in an ionic liquid of 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (AMIMCl) have been investigated. Polarized optical microscopy (POM) measurements indicate that the two critical cellulose concentrations for the appearance of biphase and fully anisotropic phase for MCC/AMIMCl solutions are 9 and 16 wt%, respectively. POM and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements coherently indicate that the clearing temperature, T-c increases with increasing cellulose concentration. Oscillatory shear measurements show that the crossover frequency first moves to lower values and then moves back to higher values with increasing cellulose concentration, which indicates that most cellulose chains are aligned or oriented to reduce chain entanglements when the cellulose concentration is above 14 wt%. From the steady shear measurements, it is surprising to find that the viscosity versus shear rate curves exhibit four flow regions including two plateaus and two shear-thinning regions when the cellulose concentration exceeds 9 wt%. The influences of cellulose concentration and temperature on the first normal stress differences (N-l) are analyzed according to the Larson theory. The peak of N-l always appears at the intermediate part of the first shear-thinning region, and the following minimum of N-l appears at the onset of the second shear-thinning region. The viscosity versus shear rate curves only exhibit two flow regions when temperature is above the respective T-c; meanwhile, negative N-l values disappear and N-l increases monotonically. The above results suggest that melting of the liquid crystal domains at high temperature results in the disappearance of the second plateau for the viscosity versus shear rate curves.

Abstract:Dissolution of cellulose is crucial for its regeneration and chemical modification, such as homogeneous transesterification, for example. The cellulose dissolution in ionic liquid (IL) media is suggested as a prospective environmentally friendly alternative to conventional solvents. In this study, novel distillable ionic liquid 5-methyl-1,5,7-triaza-bicyclo-[4.3.0]non-6-enium acetate, [mTBNH][OAc] was used for cellulose dissolution. This IL has high dissolving power towards cellulose and durability for recycling. However, the disadvantage of ILs is their high viscosity, which limits the supreme cellulose concentration in IL solutions, and their high cost, hindering their commercialization. The addition of low-viscous, low-cost, and naturally derived co-solvents can reduce the overall viscosity and cost. In this study, rheology experiments were conducted to investigate the flow behavior of cellulose in [mTBNH][OAc] ionic liquid mixed with the green co-solvents such as γ-Valerolactone (GVL), dimethyl isosorbide (DMI), and N,N′-dimethylpropyleneurea (DMPU). A study of the rheology showed that the viscosity reduces at low doses of co-solvent (≤ 50 wt%) but causes the structuring of the cellulose solution and its gelation (or phase separation) at high doses (≥ 50 wt%). The rheological study also indicated that the flow activation energy of cellulose in IL/co-solvent systems is lower than that in pure IL and decays in the order of DMPU > DMI > GVL > DMSO.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) have emerged as a promising class of green solvents suitable for cellulose dissolution. In this study, two dihydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquids, 1-methyl-3-(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)-imidazolium chloride ([DPmim]Cl) and 1-butyl-3-(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)-imidazolium chloride ([DPbim]Cl), were prepared for microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) dissolution. The physical properties of [DPmim]Cl and [DPbim]Cl, such as relative viscosity, density, electrical conductivity, and Kamlet-Taft parameters (& beta; and r*), were evaluated. The dissolution and regeneration properties of MCC in [DPmim]Cl and [DPbim]Cl were investigated. The regenerated MCC was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Density functional theory (DFT) simulations were used to investigate the interactions between ionic liquid and cellobiose. [DPmim]Cl and [DPbim]Cl, with higher & beta;-values (0.975 and 1.098) respectively, exhibited stronger hydrogen bonding alkalinity. This increased alkalinity enhanced their ability to accept hydrogen bonds from cellulose, which in turn weakened the inter-and intra-molecular hydrogen bonds within cellulose. As a result, the dissolution of MCC was promoted. The dissolution of MCC in [DPmim]Cl was faster than [DPbim]Cl at same temperature. FTIR, TGA, and XRD characterizations showed that the hydrogen bonding network of microcrystalline cellulose was disrupted during ionic liquid dissolution. DFT simulations unveiled the formation of strong hydrogen bonds between the hydroxyl groups of ILs and the hydroxyl or ether linkages in cellulose. These hydrogen bonds have been identified as a potential crucial factor in facilitating the dissolution of cellulose.
Cellulose acetylation in ionic liquid-molecular solvent mixtures: influence of the biopolymer-induced preferential solvation on its dissolution and reactivity

Abstract:Microcrystalline cellulose was subjected to acetylation by different agents in solvent mixtures, composed of the ionic liquids (ILs) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium X (X = acetate, BuMeImAcO; chloride, BuMeImCl), and the molecular solvents (MSs), N , N -dimethylacetamide (DMAc) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The reactions were carried out under homogeneous conditions using the following acetylation agents: acetic anhydride ((Ac) 2 O), 1-acetyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (AcMeImAcO), and vinyl acetate (VA). The efficiency of acetylation was judged by the degree of biopolymer substitution, DS. For all binary solvent mixtures, the order of DS was: AcMeImAcO > (Ac) 2 O > VA. For the same acetylating agent, the order of DS was: BuMeImAcO-DMSO > BuMeImAcO-DMAc > BuMeImCl-DMSO. We rationalize this dependence of DS on reaction conditions by considering our experimental data and the results of molecular dynamics simulations (MD). Thus, solvent-induced separation of cellulose chains leads to higher acetylation rates, hence larger DS values. The order of biopolymer dissolution/chain separation is attributed to a combination of hydrogen-bonding of the IL anion with cellulose hydroxyl groups, and biopolymer-solvent hydrophobic interactions. The results of MD simulations showed an additional important point: the compositions of the cellulose solvation layers are different from those of bulk solvent mixtures; they are richer in IL ions; this difference affects the values of DS. Thus, theoretical calculations help in choosing the best solvents for cellulose dissolution/derivatization.

Celluloses in an ionic liquid: the rheological properties of the solutions spanning the dilute and semidilute regimes.

Abstract:The ionic liquid of 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([amim]Cl) was used as the good solvent to dissolve celluloses. Cellulose concentration covers the range of 0.1-3.0 wt %, spanning both the dilute and semidilute regimes. The theological properties of the cellulose ionic liquid solutions have been investigated by steady shear and oscillatory shear measurements in this study. In the steady shear measurements, all the cellulose solutions show a shear thinning behavior at high shear rates; however, the dilute cellulose solutions show another shear thinning region at low shear rates, which may reflect the characteristics of the [amim]Cl solvent. In the oscillatory shear measurements, for the dilute regime, the reduced dimensionless moduli are obtained by extrapolation of the viscoelastic measurements for the dilute solutions to infinite dilution. The frequency dependences of the reduced dimensionless moduli are intermediate between the predictions from the Zimm model and elongated rodlike model theories, while the fitting by using a hybrid model combining these two model theories agrees well with the experimental results. For the semidilute regime, the frequency dependences of moduli change from the Zimm-like behavior to the Rouse-like behavior with increasing cellulose concentration. In the studied concentration range, the effects of molecular weight and temperature on solution viscoelasticities and the relationship between steady shear viscosity and dynamic shear viscosity are presented. Results show that the solution viscoelasticity greatly depends on the molecular weight of cellulose; the empirical time-temperature superposition principle holds true at the experimental temperatures, while the Cox-Merz rule fails for the solutions investigated in this study.
Dissolution of Cellulose in Ionic Liquid–DMSO Mixtures: Roles of DMSO/IL Ratio and the Cation Alkyl Chain Length

Abstract:The dissolution behavior of cellulose in the mixtures of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and different ionic liquids (ILs) at 25 °C was studied. High solubility of cellulose was reached in the mixtures of ILs and DMSO at mole fractions of 1:2, 1:2, and 1:1 for 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate, 1-propyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate, and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate, respectively. At high DMSO/IL molar ratios (10:1–2:1), a longer alkyl chain of the IL cation led to higher cellulose solubility. However, shorter cation alkyl chains favored cellulose dissolution at 1:1. Rheological, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements were used to understand cellulose dissolution. It was found out that the increase of the DMSO ratio in binary mixtures caused higher cellulose solubility by decreasing the viscosity of systems. For cations with longer alkyl chains, stronger interaction between the IL and cellulose and higher viscosity of DMSO/IL mixtures were observed. The new knowledge obtained here could be useful to the development of cost-effective solvent systems for biopolymers.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Molecular self-diffusion coefficients were measured in solutions of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and dissolving pulp, in 40 wt% aqueous tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAH), using pulsed field gradient stimulated echo NMR. From the cellulose diffusion coefficients, a weight averaged radius of hydration <Rh>w = 6.1 nm for MCC and <Rh>w = 15 nm for pulp were obtained. Water and TBA+ ions show a significantly different dependence on the cellulose concentration, revealing different molecular interactions with the polymer. Water-cellulose are essentially excluded volume. TBA+ ions, on the other hand, bind to cellulose with approximately 1.2 TBA+ ions per glucose unit.

Interaction between prion protein and Aβ amyloid fibrils revisited.

Abstract:Recent studies indicate that the pathogenesis of Alzheimer disease may be related to the interaction between prion protein (PrP) and certain oligomeric species of Aβ peptide. However, the mechanism of this interaction remains unclear and controversial. Here we provide direct experimental evidence that, in addition to previously demonstrated binding to Aβ oligomers, PrP also interacts with mature Aβ fibrils. However, contrary to the recent claim that PrP causes fragmentation of Aβ fibrils into oligomeric species, no evidence for such a disassembly could be detected in the present study. In contrast, our data indicate that the addition of PrP to preformed Aβ fibrils results in a lateral association of individual fibrils into larger bundles. These findings have potentially important implications for understanding the mechanism by which PrP might impact Aβ toxicity as well as for the emerging efforts to use PrP-derived compounds as inhibitors of Aβ-induced neurodegeneration.

Abstract:A rheological study of solvation of algal cellulose and nanocellulose in dimethylacetamide with a lithium chloride addition as one of priority direct solvents has been performed. It was established that algal cellulose in solution can form spatial structures—cationic complexes with dimethylacetamide stabilized by chlorine anions. The activation energy of this process is 29.4–42.8 kJ/mol. The concentration dependence of viscosity indicates the presence of association interactions, which are most pronounced at a cellulose/nanocellulose concentration of >1.5% in solution. It was determined by rotational viscometry that 2.0% algal cellulose/nanocellulose solutions have pseudoplastic properties. The solutions are promising raw materials for the production of nonwoven materials and hydro/aerogels for biomedical use.

Abstract:This paper investigates the dissolution of two biopolymers, cellulose and silk fibroin, in a mixture of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EmimAc) and dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO). EmimAc is a promising environmentally friendly solvent currently in wide use but can be limited by its high viscosity, which inhibits the speed of dissolution. To mediate this, DMSO has been used as a cosolvent and has been shown to significantly lower the solution viscosity and aid mass transport. Dissolution experiments are carried out separately for both cellulose and silk fibrion with a range of EmimAc:DMSO ratios from 100 wt% EmimAc to 100 wt% DMSO. Interestingly, the optimal EmimAc:DMSO ratio (in terms of dissolution speed) is found to be very different for the two biopolymers. For cellulose, a mixture of 20 wt% EmimAc with 80 wt% DMSO is found to have the fastest dissolution speed, while for silk fibroin, a ratio of 80 wt% EmimAc with 20 wt% DMSO proves the fastest. These dissolution trials are complemented by rheological and nuclear magnetic resonance experiments to provide further insight into the underlying mechanisms. Finally, we produce hybrid biopolymer films from a solution to show how this work provides a foundation for future effective dissolution and the preparation of hybrid biopolymer films and hybrid biocomposites.

Abstract:In this paper, the influence of diamines on the intrinsic structure and molecular mobility of cellulosic complexes is discussed. Cellulose was pre-swollen by ethylenediamine then put in contact with a series of aliphatic diamines at a stoechiometric ratio. These materials were then characterized by Wide Angle X-Ray diffraction (WAXS) and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. It was observed by WAXS that diamines are able to swell cellulose along the (010) crystallographic plane and are able to modify unit cell angle of cellulose monoclinic structure. Moreover according to their periodicity, ordered- or disordered-phases structures were identified in such cellulosic complexes by Cross Polarization - Magic Angle Spinning ( CP-MAS ) NMR spectroscpy. Two-dimensional Wide-line Separation ( 2D WISE ) and relaxation time NMR spectroscopy experiments showed that complexes do exhibit molecular motions between 23 and 90 C. Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Many researches have studied the viscoelasticity of cellulose/ionic liquid solutions through the conventional scaling rules which assume the monodisperse polymer. However, they are not suitable for cellulose since natural polymers such as cellulose have molecular weight distribution. In this paper, dynamic rheological behaviors of 1-ethyl-3-methyl imidazolium acetate solutions dissolving three kinds of celluloses were measured in a large range of concentrations from the dilute regime to the entangled semidilute regime at 25°C. We compared the viscosity-fitting scaling (Chen <em class="a-plus-plus">et al.</em>, 2011) and the phenomenological scaling to replace the conventional scaling. Two scaling methods were applied to the linear viscoelasticity of the cellulose solutions with different molecular weights and molecular weight distributions. The results of each scaling were compared by the superposition of master curves obtained from each scaling. The effects of molecular weight distribution were observed by the dependence of the scaling factors on concentration and molecular weight of cellulose.</p>

Abstract:A facile cellulose solvent 1,3-diallyl-2-ethylimidazolium acetate ([AAeim][OAc]) with high electrical conductivity has been designed and synthesized for the first time, via a quaternization reaction and ion exchange method. The dissolution characteristics of cellulose in this solvent were studied in detail. Meanwhile, the co-solvent system was designed by adding an aprotic polar solvent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in [AAeim][OAc]. The effects of temperature and the mass ratio of DMSO to [AAeim][OAc] on the solubility of cellulose were studied. Furthermore, the effects of regeneration on the molecular structure and thermal stability of cellulose were determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermal gravity analysis (TGA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The findings revealed that the synthesized ionic liquid (IL) has a relatively low viscosity, high conductivity and a good dissolving capacity for bamboo dissolving pulp cellulose (Degree of Polymerization: DP = 650). The macromolecular chain of the cellulose is less damaged during the dissolution and regeneration process. Due to the increased number of "free" anions [OAc]- and cations [AAeim]⁺, the addition of DMSO can significantly increase the solubility of the cellulose up to 12 wt % at the mass ratio of 3:1, indicating that the synthesized IL has a potential application in the electrospinning field.

Abstract:Owing to its high sustainable production capacity, cellulose represents a valuable feedstock for the development of more sustainable alternatives to currently used fossil fuel-based materials. Chemical analysis of cellulose remains challenging, and analytical techniques have not advanced as fast as the development of the proposed materials science applications. Crystalline cellulosic materials are insoluble in most solvents, which restricts direct analytical techniques to lower-resolution solid-state spectroscopy, destructive indirect procedures or to 'old-school' derivatization protocols. While investigating their use for biomass valorization, tetralkylphosphonium ionic liquids (ILs) exhibited advantageous properties for direct solution-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis of crystalline cellulose. After screening and optimization, the IL tetra- n -butylphosphonium acetate [P 4444 ][OAc], diluted with dimethyl sulfoxide- d 6 , was found to be the most promising partly deuterated solvent system for high-resolution solution-state NMR. The solvent system has been used for the measurement of both 1D and 2D experiments for a wide substrate scope, with excellent spectral quality and signal-to-noise, all with modest collection times. The procedure initially describes the scalable syntheses of an IL, in 24–72 h, of sufficient purity, yielding a stock electrolyte solution. The dissolution of cellulosic materials and preparation of NMR samples is presented, with pretreatment, concentration and dissolution time recommendations for different sample types. Also included is a set of recommended 1D and 2D NMR experiments with parameters optimized for an in-depth structural characterization of cellulosic materials. The time required for full characterization varies between a few hours and several days.

Abstract:Cellulose liquid crystal solutions have been extensively studied, and the methylene length of mesogenic units has a significant influence on the properties of cellulose liquid crystal solutions. In this study, 4-(ω-(methylimidazole)alkyloxy)-4'-(cyano)-biphenyl (CBP-n) with 4–7 methylene lengths were synthesized as mesogenic units to prepare cellulose side chain liquid crystal in 1-Allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (AMIMCl). And their liquid crystal properties were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), in-situ infrared spectrometer (IR), torque rheometer, and polarizing microscope (POM). The results showed that CBP-n with 4–7 methylene lengths were thermotropic liquid crystal, and the cellulose/CBP-n/AMIMCl solutions were lyotropic liquid crystal when the concentration of cellulose is 6wt% and the concentration of CBP-n with methylene length 4 and 6 is 3wt%. In-situ IR proved that the liquid crystal formation of cellulose/CBP-n/AMIMCl solution was caused by the hydrogen bonding formed between cellulose and CBP-n. And the solutions have a fewer entanglement number and lower viscosity than those of methylene length 5 and 7, indicating that the hydrogen bonding interaction between CBP-n with even methylene length and cellulose molecule is stronger than that of odd methylene length. This study provides a new approach to produce cellulose fibers using cellulose/CBP-n/AMIMCl as a new renewable resource.
