Abstract:In 1916 Einstein introduced the first rules for a quantum theory of electromagnetic radiation, and he applied them to a model of matter in thermal equilibrium with radiation to derive Planck's black-body formula. Einstein's treatment is extended here to time-dependent stochastic variables, which leads to a master equation for the probability distribution that describes the irreversible approach of Einstein's model towards thermal equilibrium, and elucidates aspects of the foundation of statistical mechanics. An analytic solution of this equation is obtained in the Fokker-Planck approximation which is in excellent agreement with numerical results. At equilibrium, it is shown that the probability distribution is proportional to the total number of microstates for a given configuration, in accordance with Boltzmann's fundamental postulate of equal a priori probabilities for these states. While the counting of these configurations depends on particle statistics- Boltzmann, Bose-Einstein, or Fermi-Dirac - the corresponding probability is determined here by the dynamics which are embodied in the form of Einstein's quantum transition probabilities for the emission and absorption of radiation. In a special limit, it is shown that the photons in Einstein's model can act as a thermal bath for the evolution of the atoms towards the canonical equilibrium distribution of Gibbs. In this limit, the present model is mathematically equivalent to an extended version of the Ehrenfests' ``dog-flea'' model, which has been discussed recently by Ambegaokar and Clerk.

Abstract:We consider the effect of small scale random fluctuations of the constitutive coefficients on boundary measurements of solutions to radiative transfer equations. As the correlation length of the random oscillations tends to zero, the transport solution is well approximated by a deterministic, averaged, solution. In this paper, we analyze the random fluctuations to the averaged solution, which may be interpreted as a central limit correction to homogenization.

Abstract:We give an exact information-theory treatment of the $n$-dimensional black-body radiation process in a non-extensive scenario. We develop a $q$ generalization of the laws of i) Stefan Boltzmann, ii) Planck, and iii) Wien, and show that conventional, canonical results are obtained at temperatures above $1 K$. Classical relationships between radiation, pressure, and internal energy are recovered (independently of the $q$-value). Analyzing the particles' density for $q\approx 1$ we see that the non-extensive parameter $q$ introduces a fictitious chemical potential. We apply our results to experimental data on the cosmic microwave background and reproduce it with acceptable accuracy for different temperatures (each one associated to a particular $q$ value

Abstract:Quantum fluctuation consequences have significant role in high-energy physics. These fluctuation often regarded as a correction of the infrared (IR) limit. Such correction contribute to the high-energy limit of thermodynamical quantities and the stability conditions of black holes. In this work, we analyze the thermal stability of black holes in the presence of thermal fluctuations. We consider AdS black hole in Born-Infeld massive gravity with non-abelian hair and the charged AdS black hole with a global monopole. We develop many thermodynamical quantities such as entropy, temperature, pressure, heat capacity of a system at constant volume and pressure, ratio between the heat capacities at constant pressure and volume, Gibbs free energy and Helmholtz free energy for both black holes. The critical behavior and phase transitions of black holes are also presented. We also observe the local and global stability of black holes in the grand canonical ensemble and canonical ensemble for the specific values of different parameters, such as, symmetry breaking parameter $\eta$, massive parameter $m$ and non-abelian hair $\nu$.

Abstract:The thermal balance between the black hole and surrounding thermal radiation is an interesting topic. The primordial black hole is a type of black hole formed in the early universe, especially during the thermal radiation period of the early universe. Driven by gravity, thermal radiation will collapse to form a black hole. Because of the complexity of the actual situation, we use the simplest model for simulation under the premise of only considering the thermodynamic properties of the system: in the classic case, an isolated box full of thermal radiation, by adjusting the initial temperature within a reasonable range, the results show that the collapse of part of the thermal radiation to form a black hole and finally achieve thermal equilibrium is an inevitable result of the second law of thermodynamics. We then introduced the quantization of black holes and the number of microscopic states of thermal radiation into the thermal equilibrium system and came to a surprising conclusion: if both the quantization of black holes and the number of microscopic states of thermal radiation are considered at the same time, the fluctuation of thermodynamics is inevitable. When only one of them is considered, the law of conservation of energy and the second law of thermodynamics can be satisfied at the same time, and the fluctuation of thermodynamics can be avoided. This provides a new way of thinking for us to understand the microscopic origin of thermodynamic fluctuations.

Abstract:We study various equilibrium thermodynamic properties of blackbody radiation (i.e. a photon gas) with an ultraviolet energy cut-off. We find that the energy density, specific heat etc. follow usual acoustic phonon dynamics as have been well studied by Debye. Other thermodynamic quantities like pressure, entropy etc. have also been calculated. The usual Stefan-Boltzmann law gets modified. We observe that the values of the thermodynamic quantities with the energy cut-off is lower than the corresponding values in the theory without any such scale. The phase-space measure is also expected to get modified for an exotic spacetime appearing at Planck scale, which in turn leads to the modification of Planck energy density distribution and the Wien's displacement law. We found that the non-perturbative nature of the thermodynamic quantities in the SR limit (for both the case with ultravilolet cut-off and the modified measure case), due to nonanalyticity of the leading term, is a general feature of the theory accompanied with an ultraviolet energy cut-off. We have also discussed the possible modification in the case of Big Bang and the Stellar objects and have suggested a table top experiment for verification in effective low energy case.

Abstract:We investigate the radiation of a blackbody in a cavity of finite size. For a given geometry, we use semiclassical techniques to obtain explicit expressions of the modified Planck and Stefan-Boltzmann blackbody radiation laws as a function of the size and shape of the cavity. We determine the range of parameters (temperature and size and shape of the cavity) for which these effects are accessible to experimental verification. Finally we discuss potential applications of our findings in the physics of the cosmic microwave background and sonoluminescence.

Abstract:Fluctuation and Noise Letters, Ahead of Print. Stefan–Boltzmann law, stating the fourth power temperature dependence of the radiation emission by a black-body, was empirically formulated by Stefan in 1874 by fitting existing experiments and theoretically validated by Boltzmann in 1884 on the basis of a classical physical model involving thermodynamics principles and the radiation pressure predicted by Maxwell equations. At first sight the electromagnetic (EM) gas assumed by Boltzmann and following Rayleigh (1900) identifiable as an ensemble of N classical normal-modes, looks like an extension of the classical model of the massive ideal-gas. Accordingly, for this EM gas the internal total energy, U, was assumed to be function of volume V and temperature T as [math], and the equation of state was given by [math], with P the radiation pressure. In addition, Boltzmann implicitly assumed that, for given values of V and T, U and the number of modes N would take finite values. However, from one hand these assumptions are not justified by Maxwell equations and classical statistics since, in vacuum (i.e., far from the EM sources), the values of N and U diverge, the so-called ultraviolet catastrophe introduced by Ehrenfest in 1911. From another hand, Boltzmann derivation of Stefan law is found to be macroscopically compatible with its derivation from quantum statistics announced by Planck in 1901. In this paper, we present a justification of this puzzling classical/quantum compatibility by noticing that the implicit assumptions made by Boltzmann is fully justified by Planck quantum statistics. Furthermore, we shed new light on the interpretation of recent classical simulations of a black body carried out by Wang, Casati, and Benenti in 2022 who found an analogous puzzling consistency between Stefan–Boltzmann law and their simulations to induce speculations on classical physics and black body radiation that are claimed to require a critical reconsideration of the role of classical physics for the understanding of quantum mechanics.

Abstract:We analyze the problem of blackbody radiation in the presence of quantum gravity effects encoded in modified dispersion relations. In this context, the spectral radiance and the generalized Stefan-Boltzmann law are studied. Furthermore, the regime of low temperatures is contemplated as well, where features related to the blackbody thermal laws and the thermodynamics quantities such as energy, pressure, entropy, and specific heat are obtained. Possible implications in compact objects such as neutron stars are also discussed.

Blackbody thermodynamics in the presence of Casimir's effect

Abstract:This paper is a study of the electromagnetic radiation at temperature $T$ in a thin slab whose walls are made of a perfect conductor. The two large parallel walls of area $A$ are apart by a distance $d\ll \sqrt{A}$. We take $T$, $A$, and $d$ as thermodynamic parameters, obtaining the free energy from a procedure that involves the integration over the slab of the ensemble average of the stress-energy-momentum tensor calculated long ago by Brown and Maclay. Both thermodynamic regimes $kTd/\hbar c\gg 1$ and $kTd/\hbar c\ll 1$ are fully addressed. We show that certain thermodynamic quantities which are notoriously ill defined (or trivial) in ordinary blackbody thermodynamics are now well defined (or nontrivial) due to presence of boundary conditions at the walls of the slab ("Casimir's effect"). The relationships among such quantities are fully explored and it is speculated that they may be experimentally checked. Stability is addressed, showing that electromagnetic radiation in the slab is thermally stable; but mechanically unstable. We investigate thermodynamic processes where temperature, internal energy, entropy and enthalpy are each taken to be constant, revealing rather atypical behaviors. For example, in sharp contrast with what one would expect from a gas, when $kTd/\hbar c\ll 1$, "free expansion" gives place to "free contraction'' in accordance with the second law of thermodynamics. As a check of consistency of the formulae we remark that various Carnot cycles have been examined and verified that they correctly lead to Carnot's efficiency.

Fluctuation in the Fidelity of Information Recovery from Hawking Radiation

Abstract:The interior of a pure-state black hole is known to be reconstructed from the Petz map by collecting a sufficiently large amount of the emitted Hawking radiation. This was established based on the Euclidean replica wormhole, which comes from an ensemble averaging over gravitational theories. On the other hand, this means that the Page curve and the interior reconstruction are both ensemble averages; thus, there is a possibility of large errors. In the previous study [Bousso, Miyaji (2023)], it was shown that the entropy of the Hawking radiation has fluctuation of order $e^{-S_{\mathbf{BH}}}$, thus is typical in the ensemble. In the present article, we show that the fluctuations of the relative entropy difference in the encoding map and the entanglement fidelity of the Petz map are both suppressed by $e^{-S_{\mathbf{BH}}}$ compared to the signals, establishing the typicality in the ensemble. In addition, we also compute the entanglement loss of the encoding map.

Abstract:We study how fluctuations of the black hole geometry affect the properties of Hawking radiation. Even though we treat the fluctuations classically, we believe that the results so obtained indicate what might be the effects induced by quantum fluctuations in a self-consistent treatment. To characterize the fluctuations, we use the model introduced by York in which they are described by an advanced Vaidya metric with a fluctuating mass. Under the assumption of spherical symmetry, we solve the equation of null outgoing rays. Then, by neglecting the greybody factor, we calculate the late time corrections to the s-wave contributions of the energy flux and the asymptotic spectrum. We find three kinds of modifications. First, the energy flux fluctuates around its average value with amplitudes and frequencies determined by those of the metric fluctuations. Secondly, this average value receives two positive contributions, one of which can be reinterpreted as due to the “renormalization” of the surface gravity induced by the metric fluctuations. Finally, the asymptotic spectrum is modified by the addition of terms containing thermal factors in which the frequency of the metric fluctuations acts as a chemical potential.

Abstract:Quantum and thermal fluctuations of electromagnetic waves are the cornerstone of quantum and statistical physics, and inherent to such phenomena as thermal radiation and van der Waals forces. While the basic principles are the material of elementary texts, recent experimental and technological advances have made it necessary to come to terms with counterintuitive consequences of electromagnetic fluctuations at short scales -- in the so called {\it near-field} regime. We focus on three manifestations of such behavior: {\bf (i)} The Stefan--Boltzmann law describes thermal radiation from macroscopic bodies, but fails to account for magnitude, polarization and coherence of radiation from small objects (say compared to the skin depth). {\bf (ii)} The heat transfer between two bodies at similar close proximity is dominated by evanescent waves, and can be several orders of magnitude larger than the classical contribution due to propagating waves. {\bf (iii)} Casimir/van der Waals interactions are a dominant force between objects at sub-micron separation; the non-equilibrium analogs of this force (for objects at different temperatures) have not been sufficiently explored (at least experimentally). To explore these phenomena we introduce the tool of fluctuational quantum electrodynamics (QED) originally introduced by Rytov in the 1950s. Combined with a scattering formalism, this enables studies of heat radiation and transfer, equilibrium and non-equilibrium forces for objects of different material properties, shapes, separations and arrangements.

How the Change in Horizon Area Drives Black Hole Evaporation

Abstract:We rephrase the derivation of black hole radiation so as to take into account, at the level of transition amplitudes, the change of the geometry induced by the emission process. This enlarged description reveals that the dynamical variables which govern the emission are the horizon area and its conjugate time variable. Their conjugation is established through the boundary term at the horizon which must be added to the canonical action of general relativity in order to obtain a well defined action principle when the area varies. These coordinates have already been used by Teitelboim and collaborators to compute the partition function of a black hole. We use them to show that the probability to emit a particle is given by $e^{- \Delta A/4}$ where $\Delta A$ is the decrease in horizon area induced by the emission. This expression improves Hawking result which is governed by a temperature (given by the surface gravity) in that the specific heat of the black hole is no longer neglected. The present derivation of quantum black hole radiation is based on the same principles which are used to derive the first law of classical black hole thermodynamics. Moreover it also applies to quantum processes associated with cosmological or acceleration horizons. These two results indicate that not only black holes but all event horizons possess an entropy which governs processes according to quantum statistical thermodynamics.
