Abstract:The catalytic approaches fulfilled by the singly dispersed metal atoms anchoring on the solid materials were categorized as single-atom catalysis. In this perspective, after briefly introducing the history in this research field, we compare the differences between single-atom catalyst and several terms indicating some heterogeneous highly dispersed metal catalysts. Single-atom catalysts could provide the simplified models in exploring the catalytically active structures, and a new era of designing catalysts at the atomic scale is thus opened. In this context, single-atom catalysis may be regarded as a bridge to combine the homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. Moreover, the materials containing isolated metal centers also provide great opportunities in many other applications, such as medicinal treatment, selective separation of gas molecule, and quantum devices. At last, challenges to the single-atom catalysis are discussed.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts provide an ideal platform to bridge the gap between homogenous and heterogeneous catalysts. Here, the recent progress in this field is reported from the perspectives of static regulation and dynamic evolution. The syntheses and characterizations of single-atom catalysts are briefly discussed as a prerequisite for catalytic investigation. From the perspective of static regulation, the metal-support interaction is illustrated in how the supports alter the electronic properties of single atoms and how the single atoms activate the inert atoms in supports. The synergy between single atoms is highlighted. Besides these static views, the surface reconstruction, such as displacement and aggregation of single atoms in catalytic conditions, is summarized. Finally, the current technical challenges and mechanistic debates in single-atom heterogeneous catalysts are discussed.

Abstract:Due to excellent performance properties such as strong activity and high selectivity, single-atom catalysts have been widely used in various catalytic reactions. Exploring the application of single-atom catalysts and elucidating their reaction mechanism has become a hot area of research. This article first introduces the structure and characteristics of single-atom catalysts, and then reviews recent preparation methods, characterization techniques, and applications of single-atom catalysts, including their application potential in electrochemistry and photocatalytic reactions. Finally, application prospects and future development directions of single-atom catalysts are outlined.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysis has been recognized as a pivotal milestone in the development history of heterogeneous catalysis by virtue of its superior catalytic performance, ultrahigh atomic utilization, and well-defined structure. Beyond single-atom protrusions, two more motifs of single-atom substitutions and single-atom vacancies along with synergistic single-atom motif assemblies have been progressively developed to enrich the single-atom family. On the other hand, besides traditional carbon material based substrates, a wide variety of 2D transitional metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have been emerging as a promising platform for single-atom catalysis owing to their diverse elemental compositions, variable crystal structures, flexible electronic structures, and intrinsic activities toward many catalytic reactions. Such substantial expansion of both single-atom motifs and substrates provides an enriched toolbox to further optimize the geometric and electronic structures for pushing the performance limit. Concomitantly, higher requirements have been put forward for synthetic and characterization techniques with related technical bottlenecks being continuously conquered. Furthermore, this burgeoning single-atom catalyst (SAC) system has triggered serial scientific issues about their changeable single atom-2D substrate interaction, ambiguous synergistic effects of various atomic assemblies, as well as dynamic structure-performance correlations, all of which necessitate further clarification and comprehensive summary. In this context, this Review aims to summarize and critically discuss the single-atom engineering development in the whole field of 2D TMD based catalysis covering their evolution history, synthetic methodologies, characterization techniques, catalytic applications, and dynamic structure-performance correlations. In situ characterization techniques are highlighted regarding their critical roles in real-time detection of SAC reconstruction and reaction pathway evolution, thus shedding light on lifetime dynamic structure-performance correlations which lay a solid theoretical foundation for the whole catalytic field, especially for SACs.

Abstract:Nanotechnology has driven scientific advances in catalytic materials and processes over the past few decades. Unique physicochemical and electronic properties that emerge when materials are engineered from the bulk to the nanoscale have been exploited for a wide range of applications, including environmental remediation such as catalytic pollutant destruction. Recent advances in the catalytic synthesis of fuels and value-added chemicals explore the properties of materials, noble and transition metal catalysts in particular, when they are engineered to be below nanoscale and at the single-atom limit. In addition to the maximized efficiency of atomic utilization due to size reduction, significantly reduced costs and the potential to achieve highly selective catalysis are particularly appealing to the environmental application of single-atom catalysts, overcoming certain limitations that the field has been unable to address with nanotechnology. This critical review, built upon a comprehensive discussion of fundamental properties, synthesis methods, and application examples, evaluates in depth the opportunities and challenges of single-atom catalysts as new frontier materials for environmental remediation applications beyond nanomaterials.

Abstract:In the past decade, isolated single atoms have been successfully dispersed on various substrates, with their potential applications being intensively investigated in different reactions. While the essential target of research in single-atom catalysis is the precise synthesis of stable single-atom catalysts (SACs) with clear configurations and impressive catalytic performance, theoretical investigations have also played important roles in identifying active sites, revealing catalytic mechanisms, and establishing structure-activity relationships. Nevertheless, special attention should still be paid in theoretical works to the particularity of SACs. In this Perspective, we will summarize the theoretical progress made on the understanding of the rich phenomena in single-atom catalysis. We focus on the determination of local structures of SACs via comparison between experiments and simulations, the discovery of distinctive catalytic mechanisms induced by multiadsorption, synergetic effects, and dynamic evolutions, to name a few, the proposal of criteria for theoretically designing SACs, and the extension of original concepts of single-atom catalysis. We hope that this Perspective will inspire more in-depth thinking on future theoretical studies of SACs.

Abstract:The recent dramatic increase in research on isolated metal atoms has received extensive scientific interest in the new frontier of single‐atom catalysis. As newly advanced materials in catalysis, single‐atom catalysts (SACs) have received enormous interest from the perspectives of both scientific research and industrial applications due to their remarkable activity. In addition, other catalytic properties of single metal atoms, including stability and selectivity, can be further improved by tuning their electronic/geometric structures and modulating the metal–support interactions. SACs usually consist of dispersed atoms and appropriate support materials, which are employed to anchor, confine, and/or coordinate with isolated metal atoms. Therefore, the nature of single metal sites allows acquiring a maximum atom utilization approaching 100%, which is of significance, particularly for the development of noble‐metal‐based catalysts. In order to systematically understand the structure–property relationships and the underlying catalytic mechanisms relationship of SACs, the representative scientific research efforts in their synthesis strategies, catalytic applications, and performance regulation are discussed here. Typical single‐atom catalysis processes and the corresponding mechanisms in electrochemistry, photochemistry, organic synthesis, and biomedicine are also summarized. Finally, the challenges and prospects for the development of single‐atom catalysis and SACs are highlighted.

Abstract:Due to their outstanding catalytic properties of high stability, high selectivity, and high activity, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted the attention of research teams worldwide. The synthesis and application breakthroughs of single atom in environmental catalysis have been systematically reviewed in this study. With nearly 100 % atomic utilization and easy separation, single-atom catalysts take into account the advantages of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. The results show that the common preparation methods of monatomic catalysts include arc discharge, strong electrostatic adsorption (SEA), flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) and atomic layer deposition (ALD). Common single-atom catalyst supports include graphene, zeolites, and oxides. Common anchoring sites for single-atom catalysts include surface atomic sites, doped heteroatom sites, hole sites, defect sites, metal sites, and curvature sites. In addition, this study also reviewed the application of single-atom catalysts in the field of environmental catalysis, focusing on the breakthroughs of single-atom catalysis in solving volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission control, activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade pollutants, and green energy conversion (GNC). The results show that coordination number and orbital interactions play an important role in the catalytic mechanism of single-atom catalysts. This review indicates that single-atom catalysts have broad application prospects in areas such as air pollution, water pollution, and energy conversion. In addition, the cost, lifespan, loading rate, and secondary pollution of single-atom catalysts will still be issues that require special attention in the future.

Abstract:In recent years, single-atom catalysts attracted lots of attention because of their high catalytic activity, selectivity, stability, maximum atom utilization, exceptional performance, and low cost. Single-atom catalyst contains isolated individual atom which are coordinated with the surface atoms of support such as a metal oxide or 2d - materials. In this review article, we present the advancement in single-atom catalysis in recent years with a focus on the various synthesis methods and their application in catalytic reactions. We also demonstrate the reaction mechanism of a single-atom catalyst for different catalytic reactions from theoretical aspects using density functional theory.

Abstract:Two-dimensional materials and single-atom catalysts are two frontier research fields in catalysis. A new category of catalysts with the integration of both aspects has been rapidly developed in recent years, and significant advantages were established to make it an independent research field. In this Review, we will focus on the concept of two-dimensional materials confining single atoms for catalysis. The new electronic states via the integration lead to their mutual benefits in activity, that is, two-dimensional materials with unique geometric and electronic structures can modulate the catalytic performance of the confined single atoms, and in other cases the confined single atoms can in turn affect the intrinsic activity of two-dimensional materials. Three typical two-dimensional materials are mainly involved here, i.e., graphene, g-C3N4, and MoS2, and the confined single atoms include both metal and nonmetal atoms. First, we systematically introduce and discuss the classic synthesis methods, advanced characterization techniques, and various catalytic applications toward two-dimensional materials confining single-atom catalysts. Finally, the opportunities and challenges in this emerging field are featured on the basis of its current development.

Abstract:Single-atom alloys that consist of a catalytically active metal atomically dispersed in a less-catalytic metal host have recently attracted significant concern from worldwide researchers. The unique geometric and electronic properties of single-atom alloys enable both facile dissociation of reactants and weak adsorption of intermediates on the surface, representing two highly desirable elements for efficient and selective catalysis. This review article provides an overview of recent progress in the synthesis and properties of single-atom alloys in heterogeneous catalysis. First, we summarize recent advances in the controllable synthesis of single-atom alloys with various metal combinations. Second, we introduce key characterization techniques, especially operando spectroscopic techniques for the identification of the geometric and electronic structures of diluted active metal atoms in single-atom alloys. Then, we discuss how these geometric and electronic properties of single-atom alloys affect their catalytic performances and thoroughly comprehend the reaction mechanism. Finally, insights into the current challenges and future prospects of single-atom alloys are provided.

Abstract:Single atom catalysis is a prosperous and rapidly growing research field, owing to the remarkable advantages of single atom catalysts (SACs), such as maximized atom utilization efficiency, tailorable catalytic activities as well as supremely high catalytic selectivity. Synthesis approaches play crucial roles in determining the properties and performance of SACs. Over the past few years, versatile methods have been adopted to synthesize SACs. Herein, we give a thorough and up-to-date review on the progress of approaches for the synthesis of SACs, outline the general principles and list the advantages and disadvantages of each synthesis approach, with the aim to give the readers a clear picture and inspire more studies to exploit novel approaches to synthesize SACs effectively.

Abstract:Atomically dispersed metal catalysts have triggered great interest in the field of catalysis owing to their unique features. The isolated single or few metal atoms can be anchored on substrates via chemical bonding or space confinement to maximize atom utilization efficiency. The key challenge lies in precisely regulating the geometric and electronic structure of active metal centers, thus significantly influencing the catalytic properties. Although several review papers were published on the preparation, characterization, and application of single‐atom catalysts (SACs), the comprehensive understanding of SACs, dual‐atom catalysts (DACs), and atomic clusters has never been systematically summarized. In this review, recent advances in the engineering of local environments of state‐of‐the‐art SACs, DACs, and atomic clusters for enhanced catalytic performance are highlighted. Firstly, various synthesis approaches for SACs, DACs, and atomic clusters are presented, focusing on how to stabilize single or few atoms on appropriate supports. Then, special attention is focused on the elucidation of local environments in terms of electronic state and coordination structure. Furthermore, a comprehensive summary of isolated single and few atoms for the applications of thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis is provided and discussed, with an emphasis on structure‐performance relationships. Finally, the potential challenges and future opportunities in this emerging field are offered for guiding the design of isolated metal catalysts for enhanced catalysis.
