Abstract:Due to excellent performance properties such as strong activity and high selectivity, single-atom catalysts have been widely used in various catalytic reactions. Exploring the application of single-atom catalysts and elucidating their reaction mechanism has become a hot area of research. This article first introduces the structure and characteristics of single-atom catalysts, and then reviews recent preparation methods, characterization techniques, and applications of single-atom catalysts, including their application potential in electrochemistry and photocatalytic reactions. Finally, application prospects and future development directions of single-atom catalysts are outlined.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts hold the potential to signiﬁcantly impact the chemical sector, pushing the boundaries of catalysis in new, uncharted directions. These materials, featuring isolated metal species ligated on solid supports, can exist in many coordination environments, all of which have shown important functions in specific transformations. Their emergence has also provided exciting opportunities for mimicking metalloenzymes and bridging the gap between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. This review outlines the impressive progress made in recent years regarding the use of single-atom catalysts in organic synthesis. We also illustrate potential knowledge gaps in the search for more sustainable, earth-abundant single-atom catalysts for synthetic applications.

Abstract:Due to their outstanding catalytic properties of high stability, high selectivity, and high activity, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted the attention of research teams worldwide. The synthesis and application breakthroughs of single atom in environmental catalysis have been systematically reviewed in this study. With nearly 100 % atomic utilization and easy separation, single-atom catalysts take into account the advantages of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. The results show that the common preparation methods of monatomic catalysts include arc discharge, strong electrostatic adsorption (SEA), flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) and atomic layer deposition (ALD). Common single-atom catalyst supports include graphene, zeolites, and oxides. Common anchoring sites for single-atom catalysts include surface atomic sites, doped heteroatom sites, hole sites, defect sites, metal sites, and curvature sites. In addition, this study also reviewed the application of single-atom catalysts in the field of environmental catalysis, focusing on the breakthroughs of single-atom catalysis in solving volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission control, activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade pollutants, and green energy conversion (GNC). The results show that coordination number and orbital interactions play an important role in the catalytic mechanism of single-atom catalysts. This review indicates that single-atom catalysts have broad application prospects in areas such as air pollution, water pollution, and energy conversion. In addition, the cost, lifespan, loading rate, and secondary pollution of single-atom catalysts will still be issues that require special attention in the future.

Abstract:In recent years, single-atom catalysts attracted lots of attention because of their high catalytic activity, selectivity, stability, maximum atom utilization, exceptional performance, and low cost. Single-atom catalyst contains isolated individual atom which are coordinated with the surface atoms of support such as a metal oxide or 2d - materials. In this review article, we present the advancement in single-atom catalysis in recent years with a focus on the various synthesis methods and their application in catalytic reactions. We also demonstrate the reaction mechanism of a single-atom catalyst for different catalytic reactions from theoretical aspects using density functional theory.

Abstract:In the history of synthesis, people applied heat, electricity, and other means to expand the synthesis field, thus promoting the construction of the magnificent material world. However, with the time passing, beyond the synthetic methods used in a laboratory, are there other solutions? The arising concept of single-atom catalysts (SACs) expands synthesis to the atomic scale. Through the finetuned and atom-level methods, people can obtain a catalytic scheme completely different from homogeneous catalysis, ultimately realizing the high-efficient, economical, and precise catalysis of synthesis. In this review, we focus on the latest development of synthesis involving SACs in the past 10 years. By discussing the reaction mechanism and combining the advantages of SACs, the structure-activity relationship is clarified, and the catalytic nature and general uses of SACs in the synthesis are summarized. Finally, we propose the opportunities, challenges, and development directions of SACs in organic synthesis in the next step.

Abstract:The catalytic approaches fulfilled by the singly dispersed metal atoms anchoring on the solid materials were categorized as single-atom catalysis. In this perspective, after briefly introducing the history in this research field, we compare the differences between single-atom catalyst and several terms indicating some heterogeneous highly dispersed metal catalysts. Single-atom catalysts could provide the simplified models in exploring the catalytically active structures, and a new era of designing catalysts at the atomic scale is thus opened. In this context, single-atom catalysis may be regarded as a bridge to combine the homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. Moreover, the materials containing isolated metal centers also provide great opportunities in many other applications, such as medicinal treatment, selective separation of gas molecule, and quantum devices. At last, challenges to the single-atom catalysis are discussed.

Abstract:Single atom catalysis is a prosperous and rapidly growing research field, owing to the remarkable advantages of single atom catalysts (SACs), such as maximized atom utilization efficiency, tailorable catalytic activities as well as supremely high catalytic selectivity. Synthesis approaches play crucial roles in determining the properties and performance of SACs. Over the past few years, versatile methods have been adopted to synthesize SACs. Herein, we give a thorough and up-to-date review on the progress of approaches for the synthesis of SACs, outline the general principles and list the advantages and disadvantages of each synthesis approach, with the aim to give the readers a clear picture and inspire more studies to exploit novel approaches to synthesize SACs effectively.

Abstract:Evolution of coordination chemistry makes all the difference for single‐atom catalytic organic synthesis. The relationship between the coordination structure and coordination effect of SACs and their action mode in organic synthesis is clarified. Current challenges and outlook are also described for potentially leading to the emergence of new catalytic insights. For traditional metal complexes, intricate chemistry is required to acquire appropriate ligands for controlling the electron and steric hindrance of metal active centers. Comparatively, the preparation of single‐atom catalysts is much easier with more straightforward and effective accesses for the arrangement and control of metal active centers. The presence of coordination atoms or neighboring functional atoms on the supports' surface ensures the stability of metal single‐atoms and their interactions with individual metal atoms substantially regulate the performance of metal active centers. Therefore, the collaborative interaction between metal and the surrounding coordination environment enhances the initiation of reaction substrates and the formation and transformation of crucial intermediate compounds, which imparts single‐atom catalysts with significant catalytic efficacy, rendering them a valuable framework for investigating the correlation between structure and activity, as well as the reaction mechanism of catalysts in organic reactions. Herein, comprehensive overviews of the coordination interaction for both homogeneous metal complexes and single‐atom catalysts in organic reactions are provided. Additionally, reflective conjectures about the advancement of single‐atom catalysts in organic synthesis are also proposed to present as a reference for later development.

Abstract:Nanotechnology has driven scientific advances in catalytic materials and processes over the past few decades. Unique physicochemical and electronic properties that emerge when materials are engineered from the bulk to the nanoscale have been exploited for a wide range of applications, including environmental remediation such as catalytic pollutant destruction. Recent advances in the catalytic synthesis of fuels and value-added chemicals explore the properties of materials, noble and transition metal catalysts in particular, when they are engineered to be below nanoscale and at the single-atom limit. In addition to the maximized efficiency of atomic utilization due to size reduction, significantly reduced costs and the potential to achieve highly selective catalysis are particularly appealing to the environmental application of single-atom catalysts, overcoming certain limitations that the field has been unable to address with nanotechnology. This critical review, built upon a comprehensive discussion of fundamental properties, synthesis methods, and application examples, evaluates in depth the opportunities and challenges of single-atom catalysts as new frontier materials for environmental remediation applications beyond nanomaterials.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts provide an ideal platform to bridge the gap between homogenous and heterogeneous catalysts. Here, the recent progress in this field is reported from the perspectives of static regulation and dynamic evolution. The syntheses and characterizations of single-atom catalysts are briefly discussed as a prerequisite for catalytic investigation. From the perspective of static regulation, the metal-support interaction is illustrated in how the supports alter the electronic properties of single atoms and how the single atoms activate the inert atoms in supports. The synergy between single atoms is highlighted. Besides these static views, the surface reconstruction, such as displacement and aggregation of single atoms in catalytic conditions, is summarized. Finally, the current technical challenges and mechanistic debates in single-atom heterogeneous catalysts are discussed.

Abstract:Heterogeneous catalysis is an important class of reactions in industrial production, especially in green chemical synthesis, and environmental and organic catalysis. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have emerged as promising candidates for heterogeneous catalysis, due to their outstanding catalytic activity, high selectivity, and maximum atomic utilization efficiency. The high specific surface energy of SACs, however, results in the migration and aggregation of isolated atoms under typical reaction conditions. The controllable preparation of highly efficient and stable SACs has been a serious challenge for applications. Herein, we summarize the recent progress in the precise synthesis of SACs and their different heterogeneous catalyses, especially involving the oxidation and reduction reactions of small organic molecules. At the end of this review, we also introduce the challenges confronted by single-atom materials in heterogeneous catalysis. This review aims to promote the generation of novel high-efficiency SACs by providing an in-depth and comprehensive understanding of the current development in this research field.

Abstract:To date, the scope of single-atom catalysts (SAC) in liquid-phase transformations is rather limited owing to stability issues and the inability to activate complex substances. This calls for a better design of the catalyst support that can provide a dynamic coordination environment needed for catalytic action, and yet retain robustness against leaching or aggregation. In addition, the chemical orthogonality of SAC is useful for designing tandem or multicomponent reactions, in which side reactions common to metal nanoparticles are suppressed. In this review, the intrinsic mechanism will be highlighted that controls reaction efficiency and selectivity in SAC-catalyzed pathways, as well as the structural dynamism of SAC under complex liquid-phase conditions. These mechanistic insights are helpful for the development of next-generation SAC systems for the synthesis of high-value pharmaceuticals through late-stage functionalization, sequential and multicomponent strategies.

Abstract:Single-atom alloys that consist of a catalytically active metal atomically dispersed in a less-catalytic metal host have recently attracted significant concern from worldwide researchers. The unique geometric and electronic properties of single-atom alloys enable both facile dissociation of reactants and weak adsorption of intermediates on the surface, representing two highly desirable elements for efficient and selective catalysis. This review article provides an overview of recent progress in the synthesis and properties of single-atom alloys in heterogeneous catalysis. First, we summarize recent advances in the controllable synthesis of single-atom alloys with various metal combinations. Second, we introduce key characterization techniques, especially operando spectroscopic techniques for the identification of the geometric and electronic structures of diluted active metal atoms in single-atom alloys. Then, we discuss how these geometric and electronic properties of single-atom alloys affect their catalytic performances and thoroughly comprehend the reaction mechanism. Finally, insights into the current challenges and future prospects of single-atom alloys are provided.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysis has been recognized as a pivotal milestone in the development history of heterogeneous catalysis by virtue of its superior catalytic performance, ultrahigh atomic utilization, and well-defined structure. Beyond single-atom protrusions, two more motifs of single-atom substitutions and single-atom vacancies along with synergistic single-atom motif assemblies have been progressively developed to enrich the single-atom family. On the other hand, besides traditional carbon material based substrates, a wide variety of 2D transitional metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have been emerging as a promising platform for single-atom catalysis owing to their diverse elemental compositions, variable crystal structures, flexible electronic structures, and intrinsic activities toward many catalytic reactions. Such substantial expansion of both single-atom motifs and substrates provides an enriched toolbox to further optimize the geometric and electronic structures for pushing the performance limit. Concomitantly, higher requirements have been put forward for synthetic and characterization techniques with related technical bottlenecks being continuously conquered. Furthermore, this burgeoning single-atom catalyst (SAC) system has triggered serial scientific issues about their changeable single atom-2D substrate interaction, ambiguous synergistic effects of various atomic assemblies, as well as dynamic structure-performance correlations, all of which necessitate further clarification and comprehensive summary. In this context, this Review aims to summarize and critically discuss the single-atom engineering development in the whole field of 2D TMD based catalysis covering their evolution history, synthetic methodologies, characterization techniques, catalytic applications, and dynamic structure-performance correlations. In situ characterization techniques are highlighted regarding their critical roles in real-time detection of SAC reconstruction and reaction pathway evolution, thus shedding light on lifetime dynamic structure-performance correlations which lay a solid theoretical foundation for the whole catalytic field, especially for SACs.

Abstract:The recent dramatic increase in research on isolated metal atoms has received extensive scientific interest in the new frontier of single‐atom catalysis. As newly advanced materials in catalysis, single‐atom catalysts (SACs) have received enormous interest from the perspectives of both scientific research and industrial applications due to their remarkable activity. In addition, other catalytic properties of single metal atoms, including stability and selectivity, can be further improved by tuning their electronic/geometric structures and modulating the metal–support interactions. SACs usually consist of dispersed atoms and appropriate support materials, which are employed to anchor, confine, and/or coordinate with isolated metal atoms. Therefore, the nature of single metal sites allows acquiring a maximum atom utilization approaching 100%, which is of significance, particularly for the development of noble‐metal‐based catalysts. In order to systematically understand the structure–property relationships and the underlying catalytic mechanisms relationship of SACs, the representative scientific research efforts in their synthesis strategies, catalytic applications, and performance regulation are discussed here. Typical single‐atom catalysis processes and the corresponding mechanisms in electrochemistry, photochemistry, organic synthesis, and biomedicine are also summarized. Finally, the challenges and prospects for the development of single‐atom catalysis and SACs are highlighted.

Abstract:Two-dimensional materials and single-atom catalysts are two frontier research fields in catalysis. A new category of catalysts with the integration of both aspects has been rapidly developed in recent years, and significant advantages were established to make it an independent research field. In this Review, we will focus on the concept of two-dimensional materials confining single atoms for catalysis. The new electronic states via the integration lead to their mutual benefits in activity, that is, two-dimensional materials with unique geometric and electronic structures can modulate the catalytic performance of the confined single atoms, and in other cases the confined single atoms can in turn affect the intrinsic activity of two-dimensional materials. Three typical two-dimensional materials are mainly involved here, i.e., graphene, g-C3N4, and MoS2, and the confined single atoms include both metal and nonmetal atoms. First, we systematically introduce and discuss the classic synthesis methods, advanced characterization techniques, and various catalytic applications toward two-dimensional materials confining single-atom catalysts. Finally, the opportunities and challenges in this emerging field are featured on the basis of its current development.

Abstract:Single-atom photocatalysts have shown their compelling potential and arguably become the most active research direction in photocatalysis due to their fascinating strengths in enhancing light-harvesting, charge transfer dynamics, and surface reactions of a photocatalytic system. While numerous comprehensions about the single-atom photocatalysts have recently been amassed, advanced characterization techniques and vital theoretical studies are strengthening our understanding on these fascinating materials, allowing us to forecast their working mechanisms and applications in photocatalysis. In this review, we begin by describing the general background and definition of the single-atom photocatalysts. A brief discussion of the metal-support interactions on the single-atom photocatalysts is then provided. Thereafter, the current available characterization techniques for single-atom photocatalysts are summarized. After having some fundamental understanding on the single-atom photocatalysts, their advantages and applications in photocatalysis are discussed. Finally, we end this review with a look into the remaining challenges and future perspectives of single-atom photocatalysts. We anticipate that this review will provide some inspiration for the future discovery of the single-atom photocatalysts, manifestly stimulating the development in this emerging research area.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs), in which the metal active sites are isolated on the support and stabilized by coordinated atoms such as oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, etc., represent the maximum usage efficiency of the metal atoms. Benefiting from the recent progress in synthetic strategies, characterization methods, and computational models, many SACs that deliver an impressive catalytic performance for a variety of reactions have been developed. The catalytic selectivity and activity are critical issues that need to be optimized and augmented in the areas of nanotechnology and biomedicine. This review summarizes some recent experimental and theoretical progress aimed at clarifying the structure of SACs and how they influence the catalytic performance. The examples described here elaborate on the utility of SACs and highlight the strengths of these catalysts in the applications of biomedicine, environmental protection, and energy conversion. Abstract:Catalysis is one of the key techniques for people's modern life. It has created numerous essential chemicals such as biomedicines, agricultural chemicals and unique materials. Heterogeneous catalysis is the new emerging method with reusable catalysts. Among heterogenous catalysis patterns developed so far, single crystalline catalysis has become the promising one owing to its high catalytic density and selectivity resulted by the inherent porosity, orderliness of the lattices and permeability. These crystalline catalysts could be used in various reactions such as photo-dimerization, Diels-Alder reaction, CO2 transformation and so on. In this review, we highlighted the reported works about the single crystalline catalysts. Both discrete small molecules and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been used to prepare single crystals for catalysis. For discrete molecules based crystalline catalysts, coordinated and covalent molecules have been used. There were more catalytic modes in crystalline MOF catalysts. Three patterns were identified in this review: single crystalline MOFs i) without catalytic sites, ii) with inherent catalytic features and iii) with introducing catalytic units by post synthetic modification. Based on these examples, this review committed to provide the inspirations for the further design and application of single crystalline materials.
