Abstract:The catalytic transformation of CO 2 into valuable fuels/chemicals is a promising and economically profitable process because it offers an alternative toward fossil feedstocks and the benefit of transforming and cycling the CO 2 on a scale-up. Cost-effective and high efficiency catalysts are of extremely significance to cut down the utilizing costs of CO 2 . Numerous studies have been carried out to develop the catalyst design for the conversion processes. Traditional metal nanoparticle-based catalysts still need to promote the active metal utilization efficiency, catalytic activity, and selectivity. Inspirationally, single-atom catalysis (SACs) has aroused significant interest of researchers owing to their maximum atom utilization, unique electronic structure, and strong metal–support interaction, offering promising strategies to facilitate the catalytic efficiency and long-term stability. The well-designed and specific structure of SACs also affords the merits to essential studies for revealing the underlying mechanism and active sites during the CO 2 utilization. In this review, we summarize and emphasize the recent progress in the development of advanced SACs for electrocatalytic, photocatalytic, and thermocatalytic conversion of CO 2 into versatile products (CO, CH 4 , CH 3 OH, HCOOH, and C 2+ products). In addition, the general principles of SAC design and the structure–performance relationship that were also systematically and constructively investigated serve as a way to explore the key parameters in deciding the catalytic performance. Moreover, we display the catalytic efficiency of different SACs for CO 2 conversion published recently to offer an in-depth assessment of these catalysts. Finally, the main challenges and perspectives in the future applications of SACs toward CO 2 conversion are also considered.

Abstract:CO2 emission has been an international issue of great concern. Utilizing of CO2, especially converting it to value‐added products, is widely investigated, among which the thermal conversion of CO2 has enormous potential for industry. Researches on single‐atom site catalysis (SAC) have become increasingly systematic during the last years. High performance and distinctive selectivity that SAC exhibits attribute to the isolated structure a large extent. To understand the structure–performance relationship of SAC in CO2 activation, issues including substrate, active components, coordination, chemical structure, etc. are of the essence not only in academia but also in industry. However, it is far away from the vision that the synthetic procedure and reaction pathway are deeply comprehended, thereupon precise single‐atom sites with specific structure are constructed and elementary reactions are regulated at will. Still a lot of efforts are needed to this field. Herein, CO2 reduction reactions are reviewed according to the products, and then catalysts are introduced by the substrate. The promoter, stability, synthesis/regeneration, characterization, and theory calculation issue related to SAC and CO2 activation are comprehensively summarized and discussed. Looking back the progress, challenge and outlook of single‐atom site catalysis are also proposed.

Abstract:The authors review the physiochemical properties, rational design strategies and characterization methods of single‐atom catalysts (SACs). SACs with atomically dispersed metal atoms, strong metal–support interaction and a tunable/unsaturated coordination environment offer a potential option for CO2 conversion. The catalytic performance and mechanism of SACs in thermocatalytic conversion of CO2 to C1 chemicals are comprehensively summarized. Carbon dioxide, as an abundant and nontoxic C1 resource, can be extensively applied to produce C1 building blocks via direct and indirect routes. On account of the stable electronic structure and high activation energy of CO2, the most challenging problem of CO2 conversion is the rational design of low‐cost and efficient catalysts with attractive performance. Single‐atom catalysts (SACs) with atomically dispersed metal atoms, strong metal–support interaction, and tunable/unsaturated coordination environment offer a potential choice by achieving maximum atomic utilization and lowering the CO2 activation barrier. Furthermore, the geometric and electronic structure of SACs can be easily regulated by tuning the coordination environment of single atoms, which significantly affects their catalytic performance. In this review, therefore, a comprehensive review of thermocatalytic CO2 conversion to C1 chemicals over SACs is presented. Specifically, the physiochemical and electronic properties, synthesis methods, and characterization technologies are introduced. Thereafter, an overview of catalytic performance and mechanism of SACs is described during thermocatalytic CO2 conversion to C1 chemicals. Finally, the main limitations of current studies on CO2 conversion to C1 chemicals over SACs are summarized, and simultaneouslyperspectives on the future are proposed, in order to provide a guidance for decarbonizing the industries and cycling greenhouse gases.

Abstract:Single-atom catalyst (SAC), emerging as a kind of promising catalyst materials with isolated active sites anchored on diverse matrixes, has shown excellent performances in thermocatalysis, photocatalysis and electrocatalysis due to their maximized efficiency of atoms and unique, adjustable electronic structure. Among all the reactions catalyzed by SAC, thermo/photo/electrocatalytic CO2 conversion reaction (CCR) converts CO2, the greenhouse gas, into fuels or value-added chemicals, which provides an effective strategy for solving the serious issues of global warming and energy shortage. In this perspective, based on the catalytic conversion of CO2 by SAC, the research progresses in the field of CO2 conversion reaction by SAC in recent years are summarized, the advantages and disadvantages of the synthetic methods, regulation and various CCRs are discussed,and the future development of SAC is prospected.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CO2 reduction is mainly inspired by natural photosynthesis, which could convert CO2 into high value-added fuels or chemicals through the role of catalysts. However, the photocatalysis efficiency of the currently developed catalysts is far from meeting the actual needs due to the low efficiency of charge separation and energy transfer, and the poor adsorption and activation of CO2 by catalyst surface. Single-atom catalysts (SACS) show an excellent activity, selectivity and stability in many important reactions, and exhibit great potential in photocatalytic reduction of CO2 owing to their high atomic utilization and controllability of active sites. In the current review, recent progresses and challenges on SACs for photocatalytic CO2 conversion systems are presented. The key fundamental principles and reaction mechanisms focusing on charge separation/transfer and molecular adsorption/activation on single-atom photocatalysts for CO2 reduction are systemically explored. We outlined how single-atom active sites promote the photogenerated carriers separation/transfer and enhance molecular photoactivation. Besides, we put forward some challenges and prospects for the future development of single-atom photocatalysts in CO2 reduction.

Abstract:The most current scientific developments, difficulties, and potential applications of single‐atom catalysts (SACs) in photocatalytic CO2 reduction are outlined. In this review, the effects of support materials and active site types in SACs on the efficiency of photocatalytic CO2 reduction are evaluated and investigated. On the development of SACs for photocatalytic CO2 reduction, several individual opinions are presented. The present energy crisis and environmental challenges may be efficiently resolved by converting carbon dioxide (CO2) into various useful carbon products. The development of more effective catalysts has been the main focus of current research on photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Due to their high atomic efficiency and superior catalytic activity, single‐atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted considerable interest in catalytic CO2 conversion. This review discusses the current research developments, obstacles, and potential of SACs for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. And further, discusses the principle of photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction. This work has compared and analyzed the effects of support materials and active site types in SACs on photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance. This work believes that by sharing these developments, some inspiration for the rational design and development of stable and effective photocatalytic CO2 reduction catalysts based on SACs can be provided.

Abstract:Electrochemical CO2 reduction is an effective pathway to convert CO2 into valuable fuels and chemicals, which provides a potential alternative to fossil fuel resources and plays a notable role in mitigating environmental issues and energy crises. The feasibility of the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) hinges on the development of catalysts that feature high activity, selectivity, and stability. As a new research frontier, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have shown immense potential in the field of CO2 reduction by virtue of their unique geometric/electronic structures, and have also provided new opportunities for atomic-level understanding of structure–function relationships. Therefore, this review aims to outline recent advances of SACs for CO2RR. We start by introducing the current research status and general synthesis strategies of SACs, and then shift our focus to analyzing the various regulation strategies and deciphering the structure–function relationships of SACs in the CO2RR. Finally, we propose future directions and opportunities for CO2RR-oriented SACs, while also highlighting potential challenges that may be encountered along the way.

Abstract:This perspective assesses the recent progress using single-atom catalysts for five “holy grail” reactions, including partial methane oxidation to methanol, non-oxidative methane conversion, photocatalytic CO2 reduction, photocatalytic water splitting, and nitrogen activation. Using selected case studies, we discuss promising efforts in these domains and at the same time identify the remaining challenges in using SACs for selective and efficient chemical transformations across thermal, electrical, and light-driven catalysis. Looking forward, we highlight the significant potential of SAC research in areas like mechanistic studies, high-throughput screening, and novel catalytic system design.

Abstract:This review summarizes the research progress of single‐atom catalysts (SACs) for electrocatalytic, photocatalytic, and thermocatalytic CO2 reduction, and the strategies of upgrading CO2 reduction performance. The type, structure, and synthesis of SACs are introduced, and the current challenges and future prospects are provided, with the purpose for presenting a deep insight and guideline for future researches to wards SACs. Continuous consumption of fossil energy and excessive CO2 emission severely restrict human society. Sustainable carbon cycle is a promising technology to simultaneously relieve greenhouse effect and energy crisis based on electrocatalysis and photocatalysis. However, the energy conversion efficiency is confined by the poor carriers utilization and insufficient reactive sites. Single‐atom catalysts (SACs) display outstanding performance in effectively overcoming the aforementioned problems. Herein, recent advances of SACs for enhancing the efficiency, selectivity, and long‐range stability of CO2 reduction are provided. First, the characteristics of SACs have been introduced in detail to provide rational design for SACs based on the relationship between structure and performance, including type, structure, and synthesis of SACs. Then, the high performance of SACs in electrocatalytic, photocatalytic, and thermocatalytic CO2 reduction has been discussed for disclosing reaction mechanism, such as charge transfer, activation barriers, and reaction pathway. In particular, the strategies of enhancing CO2 reduction performance have been summarized to provide deep insight into designing and developing more efficient SACs. Finally, an outlook on the current challenges and perspectives of SACs for electrocatalytic, photocatalytic, and thermocatalytic CO2 reduction is proposed. This review aims to provide a systematic reference for developing SACs in advanced CO2 catalytic conversion.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs), characterized by exceptionally high atom efficiency, have garnered significant attention across various catalytic reactions. Recent studies have showcased SACs with robust capabilities for precise catalysis, specifically targeting reactions along designated pathways. This review focuses on the advances in the precise activation and reconstruction of chemical bonds on SACs, including precise activation of C–O and C–H bonds and selective couplings involving C–C and C–N bonds. Our discussion begins with a thorough exploration of the factors that render SACs skilled in precise catalytic processes, encompassing the narrow d -band electronic state of single atom site resulting in the adsorption tendency, isolate site resulting in unique adsorption structure, and synergy effect of a single atom site with its neighbors. Subsequently, we elaborate on the applications of SACs in electrocatalysis and thermocatalysis including four prominent reactions, namely, electrochemical CO 2 reduction, urea electrochemical synthesis, CO 2 hydrogenation, and CH 4 activation. Then the concept of rational design of SACs for precisely controlling reaction pathways is discussed from the aspects of pore structure design, support-metal strong interaction, and support hydrophilic/hydrophobic. Finally, we summarize the challenges encountered by SACs in the field of precise catalytic processes and outline prospects for their further development in this domain.

Abstract:Greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions have attracted significant attention. The conversion of CO 2 into valuable byproducts, such as carbon monoxide (CO), through an efficient and clean electrochemical process is crucial for the mitigation of CO 2 emissions and sustainable development of the energy economy. Consequently, cutting-edge catalysts for the selective CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) are being developed. Single-atom catalysts (SACs), which are characterised by immobilised active sites, unexpected catalytic activity, high product selectivity, and reduced energy barriers, have immense potential for CO 2 RR. In particular, the non-noble metal SACs have demonstrated a remarkable competitive ability owing to their excellent performance and considerable cost-effectiveness. This review provides an overview of the basic principles governing the CO 2 RR and explores the various design strategies for these catalysts, focusing on the microenvironmental regulation of their active sites, including the adjustment of favorable coordination structures, morphological features regulation, and heteroatom doping. Furthermore, this review comprehensively discusses the recent research in CO 2 RR electrolytic cells and delves into the latest advancements in characterisation techniques for identifying physicochemical properties of SACs, including in situ techniques. Additionally, the application prospects of SACs in converting CO 2 to C 2 /C 2+ products is distilled. Finally, the challenges and related prospects are presented.

Abstract:The CO2 reduction reaction driven by sustainable electrical energy to value-added hydrocarbons is highly attractive because it can address both energy and environmental issues. The precise and rational development of corresponding electrocatalysts is of great importance to these kinds of reactions. Single-atom catalysts with unique electronic structures and coordination environments have become promising candidates, which may offer enhanced electrocatalytic performance. Herein, we summarize the recent development in the efficient fabrication of single-atom catalysts and their further application in CO2 reduction. The various strategies for SACs preparation and characterization methods are highlighted to give a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between metal active sites and catalytic ability. Abstract:Excess of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) in the atmosphere poses a significant threat to the global climate. Therefore, the electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) is important to reduce the burden on the environment and provide possibilities for developing new energy sources. However, highly active and selective catalysts are needed to effectively catalyze product synthesis with high adhesion value. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) and double-atom catalysts (DACs) have attracted much attention in the field of electrocatalysis due to their high activity, strong selectivity, and high atomic utilization. This review summarized the research progress of electrocatalytic CO 2 RR related to different types of SACs and DACs. The emphasis was laid on the catalytic reaction mechanism of SACs and DACs using the theoretical calculation method. Furthermore, the influences of solvation and electrode potential were studied to simulate the real electrochemical environment to bridge the gap between experiments and computations. Finally, the current challenges and future development prospects were summarized and prospected for CO 2 RR to lay the foundation for the theoretical research of SACs and DACs in other aspects.

Abstract:Electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R) represents a sustainable way to store intermittent renewable energies and produce carbon-neutral fuels, yet the energy efficiency remains a huge bottleneck owning to its sluggish kinetics and complex reaction pathways. Highly active, selective, and robust electrocatalysts are strongly demanded to accelerate CO2 conversion and deploy this technology to practical applications. In this review, we focus on single-atom catalysts (SACs), a unique category of electrocatalysts with atomically dispersed metal active sites, which have shown distinctive performances in CO2R and offer an ideal platform for in-depth mechanistic studies at the atomic level. Despite various SACs with attractive CO2R performances have been reported, the relationship between electronic/geometric structure of SACs and the corresponding electrocatalytic performance still needs to be discussed with caution. Here we take a broad overview on the recent progress in understanding the structure-function correlation of SACs in CO2R, with the purpose of providing deep insights and guiding the future rational design of SACs. First, we provide the fundamental understandings of CO2R on SACs, following different reaction pathways. Then, we describe the progresses in the development of well-defined SACs and the mechanistic studies on the influences from particular structural parameters, such as first-shell and second-sphere coordination, conductive supports and interface with a secondary catalyst. Finally, some perspectives are highlighted on the path towards efficient CO2R on SACs.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have obtained a great deal of attention in many catalytic fields due to the high atom utilization efficiency and high catalytic activity. Recently, great achievements on SACs have been made for thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis which play an important role in obtaining value-added products. However, it remains a great challenge to fabricate SACs with high metal loading and investigate their reaction mechanisms. Therefore, it is necessary to highlight the recent development of SACs in these fields to guide future research. In this review, we overviewed the thermocatalysis applications of SACs in CO oxidation, preferential oxidation of CO, water-gas shift reaction, methane conversion, methanol steam reforming, aqueous-phase reforming of methanol, hydrogenation of alkynes and dienes, hydrogenation of CO, and hydrogenation of substituted nitroarenes. Moreover, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), and N2 reduction reaction (N2RR) for photocatalytic and electrocatalytic fields were also overviewed. Lastly, the opportunities and challenges of SACs were pointed out.

Among all the catalysts, the carbon-based single-atom catalysts (SACs) with isolated metal atoms immobilized on conductive carbon substrates have shown significant potential toward CO2RR, which intrigues researchers to explore high-performance SACs for fuel and chemical production by CO2RR. Especially, regulating the coordination structures of the metal centers and the microenvironments of the substrates in carbon-based SACs has emerged as an effective strategy for the tailoring of their CO2RR catalytic performance. In this review, the current in situ/operando study techniques and the fundamental parameters for CO2RR performance are first briefly presented. Furthermore, the recent advances in synthetic strategies which regulate the atomic structures of the carbon-based SACs, including heteroatom coordination, coordination numbers, diatomic metal centers, and the microenvironments of substrates are summarized. In particular, the structure-performance relationship of the SACs toward CO2RR is highlighted. Finally, the inevitable challenges for SACs are outlined and further research directions toward CO2RR are presented from the perspectives.

Abstract:In the past decade, isolated single atoms have been successfully dispersed on various substrates, with their potential applications being intensively investigated in different reactions. While the essential target of research in single-atom catalysis is the precise synthesis of stable single-atom catalysts (SACs) with clear configurations and impressive catalytic performance, theoretical investigations have also played important roles in identifying active sites, revealing catalytic mechanisms, and establishing structure-activity relationships. Nevertheless, special attention should still be paid in theoretical works to the particularity of SACs. In this Perspective, we will summarize the theoretical progress made on the understanding of the rich phenomena in single-atom catalysis. We focus on the determination of local structures of SACs via comparison between experiments and simulations, the discovery of distinctive catalytic mechanisms induced by multiadsorption, synergetic effects, and dynamic evolutions, to name a few, the proposal of criteria for theoretically designing SACs, and the extension of original concepts of single-atom catalysis. We hope that this Perspective will inspire more in-depth thinking on future theoretical studies of SACs.

Abstract:The field of small molecule electro-activated conversion is becoming a new star in modern catalytic research toward the carbon-neutral future. The advent of single-atom catalysts (SACs) is expected to greatly accelerate the kinetics of electrocatalytic reactions such as the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR), etc., owing to their maximum atomic efficiency, unique quantized energy level structure and strong interaction between well-defined active sites and supports. In this feature article, our group's proposed synthesis methodology applied in electrocatalysis is mainly summarized. Furthermore, we elaborate on how to achieve the stabilization of single metal atoms against migration and agglomeration during the preparation of SACs. Moreover, the electrochemical applications of SACs with a focus on the above heterogeneous reactions are presented. Finally, the prospects for the development and deficiencies of these SACs for electrocatalytic reactions are discussed.
