Abstract:Considering the requirement of monochromaticity and tunability for resonator used in on-chip optical interconnect source,we design and make a tunable silicon reflection cavity mirror based on microring resonator,using complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology and silicon material on insulating substrate.The performance of the reflection cavity is analyzed by the transfer-matrix method,and we find that the reflection cavity shows good properties in sharpness and extinction ratio.The experimental results show that the reflectivity of the reflection cavity can reach 90％ at the wavelength of 1549 nm,the quality factor is 3 × 104,and the free spectral range (FSR) is 9.6 nm.By applying the thermo-optic modulation to the microring resonator,the wavelength tunability in FSR can be realized within the power range of 0-40.5 mW.
Engineering Waveguide-Cavity Resonant Side Coupling in A Dynamically Tunable Ultracompact Photonic Crystal Filter

Abstract:We employ a plane-wave-based transfer-matrix method in combination with a Bloch-mode scattering model to scrutinize the optical performance of an ultracompact photonic crystal (PC) all-pass optical filter made from a single-mode PC waveguide side coupled with latitudinal optical microcavities. A series of geometrical configurations of resonant microcavities side coupled with the PC waveguide, such as single one-side and two-side, periodically cascaded one-side and two-side arrangement of microcavities, and different quantities of the latitudinal and longitudinal cavity scales, cavity-cavity distance, and cavity-waveguide distance have been systematically investigated. The calculated reflection spectra exhibit a continually splitting feature of resonant frequency when the cavity size is increased. The resonant frequency shifts toward higher frequencies when we reduce the indirect coupling coefficient by increasing the waveguide-cavity distance or by introducing a symmetric two-side structure of microcavities. Optical monomode operation of the reflection pulse can be achieved for appropriate distance between two horizontal microcavities. The resonant peaks gradually evolve into a distinct rectangular shape when we introduce periodically cascaded side-coupled microcavities along the waveguide direction, implying the creation of a forbidden minigap within the guided mode continuum. The optical filter in the two-side configurations has a better filtering performance than in the one-side constructions. The cascaded side-coupled cavity-waveguide structure can act as a high-performance optical delay line.
Dual-band unidirectional reflectionlessness based on electromagnetically induced transparency-like in three-cavity array

Abstract:We propose a scheme to realize the dual-band unidirectional reflectionlessness at an exceptional point in a non-Hermitian system based on electromagnetically induced transparency-like effect. This system is constructed with three plasmonic cavities side-coupled to a plasmonic waveguide. Furthermore, our study verifies that the proposed system can consistently realize dual-band unidirectional reflectionlessness in a wide range of phase shifts, coupling strengths, and loss rates. At the same time, the analysis results show that the position of the reflectionless peaks is robust to loss rates, and can be adjusted by tuning the coupling strength between the plasmonic cavities and the plasmonic waveguide, as well as the coupling strength within the double-cavity array.

Tunable ultrahigh reflection with broadband via collective atom-atom interaction in waveguide-QED system

Abstract:We present a scheme for achieving broadband complete reflection by constructing photonic bandgap via collective atom-atom interaction in a one-dimensional (1D) waveguide quantum electrodynamics (QED) system. Moreover, we propose several strategies to further expand the ultrahigh reflection windows, including increasing the number of atoms with separations near the Bragg distance and inducing gradient frequency modulation among the atoms. The center frequency and bandwidth of the ultrahigh reflection window are dynamically adjustable by applying external electromagnetic field. The results here can enrich the many-body physics of waveguide-QED system and offer a pathway for achieving broadened ultrahigh reflection in a controllable way, which can find important applications in the realms of chip-integrated band filter, quantum storage, optical switching, and wavelength-selective devices.

Bidirectional optical non-reciprocity in a multi-mode cavity optomechanical system

Abstract:Optical non-reciprocity, a phenomenon that allows unidirectional flow of optical field is pivoted on the time reversal symmetry breaking. The symmetry breaking happens in the cavity optomechanical system (COS) due to non uniform radiation pressure as a result of light-matter interaction, and is crucial in building non-reciprocal optical devices. In our proposed COS, we study the non-reciprocal transport of optical signals across two ports via three optical modes optomechanically coupled to the mechanical excitations of two nano-mechanical resonators (NMRs) under the influence of strong classical drive fields and weak probe fields. By tuning different system parameters, we discover the conversion of reciprocal to non-reciprocal signal transmission. We reveal perfect nonreciprocal transmission of output fields when the effective cavity detuning parameters are near resonant to the NMRs' frequencies. The unidirectional non-reciprocal signal transport is robust to the optomechanical coupling parameters at resonance conditions. Moreover, the cavities' photon loss rates play an inevitable role in the unidirectional flow of signal across the two ports. Bidirectional transmission can be fully controlled by the phase changes associated with the incoming probe and drive fields via two ports. Our scheme may provide a foundation for the compact non-reciprocal communication and quantum information processing, thus enabling new devices that route photons in unconventional ways such as all-optical diodes, optical transistors and optical switches.

Abstract:Opto-mechanical systems have been investigated both theoretically and experimentally characteristic of optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT), i.e., sharp transmission features controlled by a second control beam. We studied theoretically the opto-mechanically induced transparency (OMIT) properties of double-cavity opto-mechanical system with symmetry and -asymmetry within the setting of cavity quantum electrodynamics. By means of Fourier transformation we get the pump-probe spectroscopy exactly and find the second cavity plays important roles in the properties of probe beam transmission. The dip value of OMIT can reach zero which means perfect transmission. There appear two transparency windows for the probe beam in one resonator with the increasing power of control laser beam fed into the other resonator, especially the probe beam can obtain significant gain even without direct tunneling of photons between two resonators. We expect our results would be realized experimentally and be useful for the future designs of quantum functional devices.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a photonic quasicrystal waveguide, which contains a hollow core surrounded by coaxial dielectric quasiperiodic multilayer. Due to the self-similarity in the cladding structure, multiple omnidirectional photonic band gaps (PBGs) exist in the waveguide. The light waves with the frequencies within the omnidirectional PBGs are totally reflected, thereafter, the transport of multimodes is achieved in the quasiperiodic waveguide. Further, it is shown that the centre frequency and the width of the omnidirectional PBG can be tuned by the refractive indexes or the generations of the quasiperiodic sequence in the cladding multilayer. As a consequence, both the quality factor and the confinement performance of the waveguide can be significantly enhanced by decreasing the width of the omnidirectional PBGs. The investigations make it possible to design miniaturized multifunctional optical devices, such as on-chip narrowband waveguide-based filters and laser resonators.
Tunable Optical Nonreciprocity and a Phonon-Photon Router in an Optomechanical System with Coupled Mechanical and Optical Modes

Abstract:We propose a multimode optomechanical system to realize tunable optical nonreciprocity that has the prospect of making an optical diode for information technology. The proposed model consists of two subsystems, each of which contains two optical cavities, injected with a classical field and a quantum signal via a 50: 50 beam splitter, and a mechanical oscillator, coupled to both cavities via optomechanical coupling. Meanwhile two cavities and an oscillator in a subsystem are respectively coupled to their corresponding cavities and an oscillator in the other subsystem. Our scheme yields nonreciprocal effects at different frequencies with opposite directions, but each effective linear optomechanical coupling can be controlled by an independent classical one-frequency pump. With this setup one is able to apply quantum states with large fluctuations, which extends the scope of applicable quantum states, and exploit the independence of paths. Moreover, the optimal frequencies for nonreciprocal effects can be controlled by adjusting the relevant parameters. We also exhibit the path switching of two directions, from a mechanical input to two optical output channels, via tuning the signal frequency. In experiment, the considered scheme can be tuned to reach small damping rates of the oscillators relative to those of the cavities, which is more practical and requires less power than in previous schemes.

Abstract:An optomechanical microcavity can considerably enhance the interaction between light and mechanical motion by confining light to a sub-wavelength volume. However, this comes at the cost of an increased optical loss rate. Therefore, microcavity-based optomechanical systems are placed in the unresolved-sideband regime, preventing sideband-based ground-state cooling. A pathway to reduce optical loss in such systems is to engineer the cavity mirrors, i.e., the optical modes that interact with the mechanical resonator. In our work, we analyze such an optomechanical system, whereby one of the mirrors is strongly frequency-dependent, i.e., a suspended Fano mirror. This optomechanical system consists of two optical modes that couple to the motion of the suspended Fano mirror. We formulate a quantum-coupled-mode description that includes both the standard dispersive optomechanical coupling as well as dissipative coupling. We solve the Langevin equations of the system dynamics in the linear regime showing that ground-state cooling from room temperature can be achieved even if the cavity is per se not in the resolved-sideband regime, but achieves effective sideband resolution through strong optical mode coupling. Importantly, we find that the cavity output spectrum needs to be properly analyzed with respect to the effective laser detuning to infer the phonon occupation of the mechanical resonator. Our work also predicts how to reach the regime of nonlinear quantum optomechanics in a Fano-based microcavity by engineering the properties of the Fano mirror.

Abstract:Some optomechanical systems can be transparent to a probe field when a strong driving field is applied. These systems can provide an optomechanical analog of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We study the transmission of a probe field through a hybrid optomechanical system consisting of a cavity and a mechanical resonator with a two-level system (qubit). The qubit might be an intrinsic defect inside the mechanical resonator, a superconducting artificial atom, or another two-level system. The mechanical resonator is coupled to the cavity field via radiation pressure and to the qubit via the Jaynes-Cummings interaction. We find that the dressed two-level system and mechanical phonon can form two sets of three-level systems. Thus, there are two transparency windows in the discussed system. We interpret this effect as an optomechanical analog of two-color EIT (or double EIT). We demonstrate how to switch between one and two EIT windows by changing the transition frequency of the qubit. We show that the absorption and dispersion of the system are mainly affected by the qubit-phonon coupling strength and the transition frequency of the qubit.

Abstract:We report an optomechanical system with two dielectric membranes inside a Fabry-Perot cavity. The cavity resonant frequencies are measured in such a two-membrane-in-the-middle system, which show an interesting band-structure-like diagram. This system exhibits great controllability on the parameters of the system. The positions and angles of each membrane can be manipulated on demand by placing two membranes inside the cavity separately. The eigenfrequencies of the vibrational modes of the membranes can also be tuned individually with piezoelectricity. This scheme could be straightforwardly extended to multiple-membrane-in-the-middle systems, where more than two membranes are involved. Such a well controllable multiple membrane optomechanical system provides a promising platform for studying nonlinear and quantum dynamical phenomena in multimode optomechanics with distinct mechanical oscillators.

Abstract:Tunable coupled mechanical resonators with nonequilibrium dynamic phenomena have attracted considerable attention in quantum simulations, quantum computations, and non-Hermitian systems. In this study, we propose tunable mechanical-mode coupling based on nanobeam-double optomechanical cavities. The excited optical mode interacts with both symmetric and antisymmetric mechanical supermodes and mediates coupling at a frequency of approximately 4.96 GHz. The mechanical-mode coupling is tuned through both optical spring and gain effects, and the reduced coupled frequency difference in non-Hermitian parameter space is observed. These results benefit research on the microscopic mechanical parity–time symmetry for topology and on-chip high-sensitivity sensors.
Double optomechanical transparency with direct mechanical interaction

Abstract:We present a mechanism for double transparency in an optomechanical system. This mechanism is based on the coupling of a moving cavity mirror to a second mechanical oscillator. Due to the purely mechanical coupling and the radiation pressure, three pathways are established for excitations of the probe photons into the cavity photons. Destructive interference occurs at two different frequencies, leading to double transparency to the probe field. It is the coupling strength between the mechanical oscillators that determines the locations of the transparency windows. Moreover, the normal splitting appears for the generated Stokes field and the four-wave mixing process is inhibited on resonance.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the optical and mechanical properties of a double cavity optomechanical system with one stationary and two harmonically bound mirrors. We show that it is possible for the mechanical mirrors in this system to posses negative effective mass. Working within the strong coupling and the resolved sideband regime, we show that the displacement of the middle resonator is multistable under certain constrains. We also point to the existence of optomechanically induced absorption (OMIA) and Fano resonance. Owing to the negative effective mass, our scheme can be exploited in the study of quantum optomechanical metamaterials.

Unidirectional Reflectionlessness and Transmissionlessness in Indirectly Coupled Whispering‐Gallery Mode Resonators

Abstract:This work utilizes two whispering‐gallery mode resonators embedded with Zeeman‐split quantum dots to simultaneously achieve unidirectional reflectionlessness and transmissionlessness. The switching between them is achieved by modulating the coupling strength between whispering‐gallery mode resonators and waveguides. The reflection and transmission characteristics of a system composed of two whispering‐gallery mode (WGM) resonators are explored. Each resonator contains a Zeeman split quantum dot and side‐couples to an optical fiber. The results indicate that the unidirectional reflectionlessness and transmissionlessness can be achieved by adjusting the coupling strength between the resonators and the optical fiber, as well as the transition rate between the counter‐propagating modes within the WGM resonators. Besides, a one‐to‐one correspondence is set up between the resonance frequencies of quantum dots' energy levels and the positions of reflectionlessness (transmissionlessness) peaks when phase shift between two WGM resonators is π. This research provides the valuable insights for the development of quantum optical devices such as isolators, circulators, and routers.

Phononically shielded photonic-crystal mirror membranes for cavity quantum optomechanics

Abstract:We present a highly reflective, sub-wavelength-thick membrane resonator featuring high mechanical quality factor and discuss its applicability for cavity optomechanics. The $88.5~\text{nm}$ thin stoichiometric silicon-nitride membrane, designed and fabricated to combine 2D-photonic and phononic crystal patterns, reaches reflectivities up to $99.89~\%$ and a mechanical quality factor of $2.9 \times 10^7$ at room temperature. We construct a Fabry-Perot-type optical cavity, with the membrane forming one terminating mirror. The optical beam shape in cavity transmission shows a stark deviation from a simple Gaussian mode-shape, consistent with theoretical predictions. We demonstrate optomechanical sideband cooling to mK-mode temperatures, starting from room temperature. At higher intracavity powers we observe an optomechanically induced optical bistability. The demonstrated device has potential to reach high cooperativities at low light levels desirable for e.g. optomechanical sensing and squeezing applications or fundamental studies in cavity quantum optomechanics, and meets the requirements for cooling to the quantum ground state of mechanical motion from room temperature.

Abstract:Increasing the interaction between light and mechanical resonators is an ongoing endeavor in the field of cavity optomechanics. Optical microcavities allow for boosting the interaction strength through their strong spatial confinement of the optical field. In this work, we follow this approach by realizing a sub-wavelength-long, free-space optomechanical microcavity on-chip fabricated from an (Al,Ga)As heterostructure. A suspended GaAs photonic crystal mirror is acting as a highly reflective mechanical resonator, which together with a distributed Bragg reflector forms an optomechanical microcavity. We demonstrate precise control over the microcavity resonance by change of the photonic crystal parameters. The interplay between the microcavity mode and a guided resonance of the photonic crystal modifies the cavity response and results in a stronger dynamical backaction on the mechanical resonator compared to conventional optomechanical dynamics.

Abstract:We theoretically propose a hybrid system that can generate in the presence of surface acoustic wave tunable optical bistability, its switching characteristics as well as an approach to achieve manageable optomechanically induced transparency combining a SAW based optomechanical cavity and quantum dot. The fabrication of the system involves incorporating a planar distributed Bragg reflector of high-quality. In order to produce surface acoustic waves, interdigitated transducers can also be fabricated on the cavity's surface. Optical nonlinearity present in the system generates the bistability and we study its characteristics. Further, we demonstrate that optomechanically induced transparency occurs when the hybrid optomechanical cavity system, a pump field and probe field are simultaneously introduced, leading to quantum interference between multiple energy-level pathways. Our system has applications in the fields of solid-state quantum systems and optical switches for processing quantum information.
