Abstract:The inherently nonlinear interaction between light and motion in cavity optomechanical systems has experimentally been studied in a linearized description in all except highly driven cases. Here we demonstrate a nanoscale optomechanical system, in which the interaction between light and motion is so large (single-photon cooperativity $C_0 \approx 10^3$) that thermal motion induces optical frequency fluctuations larger than the intrinsic optical linewidth. The system thereby operates in a fully nonlinear regime, which pronouncedly impacts the optical response, displacement measurement, and radiation pressure backaction. Experiments show that the apparent optical linewidth is dominated by thermomechanically-induced frequency fluctuations over a wide temperature range. The nonlinearity induces breakdown of the traditional cavity optomechanical descriptions of thermal displacement measurements. Moreover, we explore how radiation pressure backaction in this regime affects the mechanical fluctuation spectra. The strong nonlinearity could serve as a resource to control the motional state of the resonator. We demonstrate the use of highly nonlinear transduction to perform a quadratic measurement of position while suppressing linear transduction.

Nonlinear Optomechanical Couplings: Tools for Dealing with Solid Mechanical Objects in the Quantum Regime

Abstract:A major goal in optomechanics is to observe and control quantum behavior in a system consisting of a mechanical resonator coupled to an optical cavity. Work towards this goal has focused on increasing the strength of the coupling between the mechanical and optical degrees of freedom; however, the form of this coupling is crucial in determining which phenomena can be observed in such a system. Here we demonstrate that avoided crossings in the spectrum of an optical cavity containing a flexible dielectric membrane allow us to realize several different forms of the optomechanical coupling. These include cavity detunings that are (to lowest order) linear, quadratic, or quartic in the membrane's displacement, and a cavity finesse that is linear in (or independent of) the membrane's displacement. All these couplings are realized in a single device with extremely low optical loss and can be tuned over a wide range in situ; in particular, we find that the quadratic coupling can be increased three orders of magnitude beyond previous devices. As a result of these advances, the device presented here should be capable of demonstrating the quantization of the membrane's mechanical energy.
Signatures of nonlinear cavity optomechanics in the weak coupling regime

Abstract:We identify signatures of the intrinsic nonlinear interaction between light and mechanical motion in cavity optomechanical systems. These signatures are observable even when the cavity linewidth exceeds the optomechanical coupling rate. A strong laser drive red-detuned by twice the mechanical frequency from the cavity resonance frequency makes two-phonon processes resonant, which leads to a nonlinear version of optomechanically induced transparency. This effect provides a new method of measuring the average phonon number of the mechanical oscillator. Furthermore, we show that if the strong laser drive is detuned by half the mechanical frequency, optomechanically induced transparency also occurs due to resonant two-photon processes. The cavity response to a second probe drive is in this case nonlinear in the probe power. These effects should be observable with optomechanical coupling strengths that have already been realized in experiments.

Abstract:Cavity optomechanical systems provide powerful platforms to manipulate photons and phonons, open potential applications for modern optical communications and precise measurements. With the refrigeration and ground-state cooling technologies, studies of cavity optomechanics are making significant progress towards the quantum regime including nonclassical state preparation, quantum state tomography, quantum information processing, and future quantum internet. With further research, it is found that abundant physical phenomena and important applications in both classical and quantum regimes appeal as they have a strong optomechanical nonlinearity, which essentially depends on the single-photon optomechanical coupling strength. Thus, engineering the optomechanical interactions and improving the single-photon optomechanical coupling strength become very important subjects. In this article, we first review several mechanisms, theoretically proposed for enhancing optomechanical coupling. Then, we review the experimental progresses on enhancing optomechanical coupling by optimizing its structure and fabrication process. Finally, we review how to use novel structures and materials to enhance the optomechanical coupling strength. The manipulations of the photons and phonons at the level of strong optomechanical coupling are also summarized.
Nonlinear optomechanical resonance entering a self-organized energy transfer pattern

Abstract:The energy transfer between different subsystems or different vibration modes is always one of the most interested problems in the study of the resonance phenomena in coupled nonlinear dynamical systems. With an optomechanical system operating in the regime of unresolved sideband, where its mechanical frequency is lower than the cavity field damping rate, we illustrate the existence of a special nonlinear resonance phenomenon. This type of previously unknown resonance manifests an organized pattern of the coupled cavity field and mechanical oscillation, so that the cavity field precisely pushes the mechanical oscillator within an appropriate small time window in each mechanical oscillation period and the mechanical energy will increase by a jump of almost fixed amount after each oscillation cycle. The scenario is realized at a resonance point where the frequency difference of two driving fields matches the mechanical frequency of the system, and this condition of drive-frequency match is found to trigger a mechanism to lock the two subsystems of an unresolved-sideband optomechanical system into a highly ordered energy transfer as the above mentioned. Due to a significantly enhanced nonlinearity in the vicinity of the resonance point, optical frequency combs can be generated under pump powers of thousand times lower, as compared to the use of a single-tone driving field for the purpose. An unresolved sideband system under the drives without satisfying the resonance condition also demonstrates other interesting dynamical behaviors. Most of all, by providing a realistic picture for the nonlinear optomechanical dynamics in unresolved sideband regime, our study points to a direction to observe novel dynamical phenomena and realize other applications with the systems of less technical restrictions.

Abstract:Motivated by the increasing interest in the properties of multimode optomechanical devices, here we study a system in which a driven mode of a large-area optical cavity is despersively coupled to a deformable mechanical element. Two different models naturally appear in such scenario, for which we predict the formation of periodic patterns, localized structures (cavity solitons), and domain walls, among other complex nonlinear phenomena. Further, we propose a realistic design based on intracavity membranes where our models can be studied experimentally. Apart from its relevance to the field of nonlinear optics, the results put forward here are a necessary step towards understanding the quantum properties of optomechanical systems in the multimode regime of both the optical and mechanical degrees of freedom.

Nonlinear optomechanical measurement of mechanical motion

Abstract:Precision measurement of nonlinear observables is an important goal in all facets of quantum optics. This allows measurement-based non-classical state preparation, which has been applied to great success in various physical systems, and provides a route for quantum information processing with otherwise linear interactions. In cavity optomechanics much progress has been made using linear interactions and measurement, but observation of nonlinear mechanical degrees-of-freedom remains outstanding. Here we report the observation of displacement-squared thermal motion of a micro-mechanical resonator by exploiting the intrinsic nonlinearity of the radiation-pressure interaction. Using this measurement we generate bimodal mechanical states of motion with separations and feature sizes well below 100 pm. Future improvements to this approach will allow the preparation of quantum superposition states, which can be used to experimentally explore collapse models of the wavefunction and the potential for mechanical-resonator-based quantum information and metrology applications.

Abstract:Cavity optomechanics has proven to be a field of research rich with possibilities for studying motional cooling, squeezing, quantum entanglement and metrology in solid state systems. While to date most studies have focused on the modulation of the cavity frequency by the moving element, the emergence of new materials will soon allow to explore the influences of nonlinear optical effects. We therefore study in this work the effects due to a nonlinear position-modulated self-Kerr interaction and find that this leads to an effective coupling that scales with the square of the photon number, meaning that significant effects appear even for very small nonlinearities. This strong effective coupling can lead to lower powers required for motional cooling and the appearance of multi-stability in certain regimes.

Abstract:Cavity optomechanics aims to establish optical control over vibrations of nanoscale mechanical systems, to heat, cool or to drive them toward coherent, or nonclassical states. This field was recently extended to encompass molecular optomechanics: the dynamics of THz molecular vibrations coupled to the optical fields of lossy cavities via Raman transitions. The molecular platform should also prove suitable for demonstrating more sophisticated optomechanical effects, including engineering of nonclassical mechanical states, or inducing coherent molecular vibrations. We propose two schemes for implementing these effects, exploiting the strong intrinsic anharmonicities of molecular vibrations. First, to prepare a nonclassical mechanical state, we propose an incoherent analogue of the mechanical blockade, in which the molecular anharmonicity and optical response of hybrid cavities isolate the two lowest-energy vibrational states. Secondly, we show that for a strongly driven optomechanical system, the anharmonicity can suppress the mechanical amplification, shifting and reshaping the onset of coherent mechanical oscillations. Our estimates indicate that both effects should be within reach of existing platforms for Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering.

Enhanced optomechanical nonlinearity through non-Markovian mechanical noise

Abstract:Cavity optomechanical systems in the quantum regime consist of a cavity mode and mechanical element coupled together through radiation pressure. In the nonlinear optomechanical regime, open-system dynamics is generally challenging to treat analytically, since the noise terms do not commute with the optomechanical interaction term. Specifically, a general treatment of both Markovian and non-Markovian mechanical noise in the nonlinear optomechanical regime is still outstanding. Here we address this question by solving the full dynamics of an optomechanical system in the nonlinear regime where the mechanical element interacts with a bath of harmonic oscillators, representing full quantum Brownian motion. The solutions, which are exact and analytic, allow us to consider the strength of the optomechanical nonlinearity in the presence of both Markovian (Ohmic) and non-Markovian (sub-Ohmic and super-Ohmic) baths. We show that that while the strength of the nonlinearity is generally reduced by a Markovian bath spectrum, it can be enhanced by constructing a bath with a highly non-Markovian structure. The results have potential implications for future optomechanical experiments which seek to achieve a strong optomechanical nonlinearity.

Abstract:We characterize the local properties of an optomechanical system comprising the movable mirror of a resonator and its intracavity field, mutually coupled via radiation-pressure. Our approach shows that both the state of the mirror and the field can be interpreted as squeezed thermal states whose dynamical properties can be tuned by properly choosing the working parameters. This allows us to design conditional procedures for the amplification of the correlation properties of the optomechanical state. Our study is a step forward in the understanding of the physics that rules a system of current enormous experimental interest.

Abstract:We investigate optomechanical coupling between one-dimensional interacting bosons and the electromagnetic field in a high-finesse optical cavity. We show that by tuning interatomic interactions, one can realize effective optomechanics with mechanical resonators ranging from side-mode excitations of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to particle-hole excitations of a Tonks-Girardeau (TG) gas. We propose that this unique feature can be formulated to detect the BEC-TG gas crossover and measure the sine-Gordon transition continuously and nondestructively.

Abstract:We investigate theoretically the chaotic dynamics in an optomechanical system composed of coupled optical resonators. We find that introducing additional loss through a nanotip can induce chaotic motion. The underlying reason for this unconventional phenomenon lies in steering the system parameters via an additional loss that can bring the system to the vicinity of a chaotic regime, which dynamically enhances the optomechanical nonlinearity and suppresses the negative influence of loss, giving rise to the emergence of chaotic motion. Our work may open a different avenue for designing and developing chaotic systems in optomechanics and provide theoretical guidance for chaotic secure communication.

Abstract:The coupling between optical and mechanical degrees of freedom has been of broad interest for a long time. However, it is only until recently, with the rapid development of optical microcavity research, that we are able to manipulate and utilize this coupling process. When a high Q microcavity couples to a mechanical resonator, they can consolidate into an optomechanical system. Benefitting from the unique characteristics offered by optomechanical coupling, this hybrid system has become a promising platform for ultrasensitive sensors to detect displacement, mass, force and acceleration. In this review, we introduce the basic physical concepts of cavity optomechanics, and describe some of the most typical experimental cavity optomechanical systems for sensing applications. Finally, we discuss the noise arising from various sources and show the potentiality of optomechanical sensing towards quantum-noise-limited detection.

Abstract:Several optomechanics experiments are now entering the highly sought nonlinear regime where optomechanical interactions are large even for low light levels. Within this regime, new quantum phenomena and improved performance may be achieved, however, a corresponding theoretical formalism of cavity quantum optomechanics that captures the nonlinearities of both the radiation-pressure interaction and the cavity response is needed to unlock these capabilities. Here, we develop such a nonlinear cavity quantum optomechanical framework, which we then utilize to propose how position measurement can be performed beyond the breakdown of the linearized approximation. Our proposal utilizes optical general-dyne detection, ranging from single to dual homodyne, to obtain mechanical position information imprinted onto both the optical amplitude and phase quadratures and enables both pulsed and continuous modes of operation. These cavity optomechanical nonlinearities are now being confronted in a growing number of experiments, and our framework will allow a range of advances to be made in e.g. quantum metrology, explorations of the standard quantum limit, and quantum measurement and control.

Abstract:In cavity optomechanics, nonlinear interactions between an optical field and a mechanical resonator mode enable a variety of unique effects in classical and quantum measurement and information processing. Here, we describe nonlinear optomechanical coupling in the membrane-in-the-middle (MIM) setup in a way that allows direct comparison to the intrinsic optomechanical nonlinearity in a standard, single-cavity optomechanical system. We find that the enhancement of nonlinear optomechanical coupling in the MIM system as predicted by Ludwig et al. <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1202.0532" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1202.0532">arXiv:1202.0532</a> is limited to the degree of sideband resolution of the system. Moreover, we show that the selectivity of the MIM system of nonlinear over linear transduction has the same limit as in a single cavity system. These findings put constraints on the experiments in which it is advantageous to use a MIM system. We discuss dynamical backaction effects in this system and find that these effects per cavity photon are exactly as strong as in a single cavity system, while allowing for reduction of the required input power. We propose using the nonlinear enhancement and reduced input power in realistic MIM systems towards parametric squeezing and heralding of phonon pairs, and evaluate the limits to the magnitude of both effects.

Abstract:Abstract Electromechanical phonon-cavity systems are man-made micro-structures, in which vibrational energy can be coherently transferred between different degrees of freedom. In such devices, the energy transfer direction and coupling strength can be parametrically controlled, offering great opportunities for both fundamental studies and practical applications such as phonon manipulation and sensing. However, to date the investigation of such systems has largely been limited to linear vibrations, while their responses in the nonlinear regime remain yet to be explored. Here, we demonstrate nonlinear operation of electromechanical phonon-cavity systems, and show that the resonant response differs drastically from that in the linear regime. We further demonstrate that by controlling the parametric pump, one can achieve nonlinearity-mediated digitization and amplification in the frequency domain, which can be exploited to build high-performance MEMS sensing devices based on phonon-cavity systems. Our findings offer intriguing opportunities for creating frequency-shift-based sensors and transducers.
