Abstract:In this paper we consider the problem of computing the difference Galois groups of order three equations for a large class of difference operators including the shift operator (Case S), the $q$-difference operator (Case Q), the Mahler operator (Case M) and the elliptic case (Case E). We show that the general problem can be reduced to several ancillary problems. We prove criteria to detect the irreducible and imprimitive Galois groups. Finally, we give a sufficient condition of differential transcendence of solutions of order three difference equations. We also compute the difference Galois group of an equation suggested by Wadim Zudilin.

On the Eisenstein Cohomology of Arithmetic Groups

Abstract:The cohomology H * (Gamma, E) of an arithmetic subgroup F of a connected reductive algebraic group G defined over some algebraic number field F can be interpreted in terms of the automorphic spectrum of Gamma. With this framework in place, there is a sum decomposition of the cohomology into the cuspidal cohomology (i.e., classes represented by cuspidal automorphic forms for G) and the so-called Eisenstein cohomology constructed as the span of appropriate residues or derivatives of Eisenstein series attached to cuspidal automorphic forms on the Levi components of proper parabolic F-subgroups of G. The main objective of this paper is to isolate a specific structural part in the Eisenstein cohomology. This pertains to regular Eisenstein cohomology classes attached to cuspidal automorphic representations whose archimedean component is tempered. It is shown that the cohomological degree of these classes is bounded from below by the constant q(0)(G(R)) = ((1 /2)[dim X-G(R) - (rk(G(R)) - rk(K-R))], where KR denotes a maximal compact subgroup of the real Lie group G(R), where XG(R) is the associated symmetric space. This investigation has various applications. One of these is a vanishing result,for the cohomology in the generic case (i.e., where coefficient system E has regular highest weight) the representation determining the in degrees below q(0) (G (R)). This is a sharp bound depending only on the underlying real Lie group G (R) (Corollary 5.6, Proposition 5.8). This result is supplemented by a qualitative structural result in the description of the cohomology in higher degrees by means of regular Eisenstein cohomology classes.
Rational Solutions to the First Order Difference Equations in the Bivariate Difference Field

Abstract:Inspired by Karr's algorithm, we consider the summations involving a sequence satisfying a recurrence of order two. The structure of such summations provides an algebraic framework for solving the difference equations of form $a\sigma(g)+bg=f$ in the bivariate difference field $(\mathbb{F}(\alpha, \beta), \sigma)$, where $a, b,f\in\mathbb{F}(\alpha,\beta)\setminus\{0\}$ are known binary functions of $\alpha$, $\beta$, and $\alpha$, $\beta$ are two algebraically independent transcendental elements, $\sigma$ is a transformation that satisfies $\sigma(\alpha)=\beta$, $\sigma(\beta)=u\alpha+v\beta$, where $u,v\neq 0\in\mathbb{F}$. Based on it, we then describe algorithms for finding the universal denominator for those equations in the bivariate difference field under certain assumptions. This reduces the general problem of finding the rational solutions of such equations to the problem of finding the polynomial solutions of such equations.

Abstract:The Galois/monodromy group of a family of geometric problems or equations is a subtle invariant that encodes the structure of the solutions. We give numerical methods to compute the Galois group and study it when it is not the full symmetric group. One algorithm computes generators, while the other studies its structure as a permutation group. We illustrate these algorithms with examples using a Macaulay2 package we are developing that relies upon Bertini to perform monodromy computations.

Abstract:We develop a Galois theory for systems of linear difference equations with periodic parameters, for which we also introduce linear difference algebraic groups. We then apply this to constructively test if solutions of linear q-difference equations, with complex q, not a root of unity, satisfy any polynomial q'-difference equations with q' being a root of unity.

Abstract:We prove that the Riemann zeta function and the Euler gamma function cannot satisfy a class of non-trivial algebraic difference equations with functional coefficients that are connected to the zeros of the Riemann zeta function on the critical line . The main result of this paper is the difference analogue of the corresponding result from Li–Ye (J. Differential Equations 260(2):1456–1464, 2016), and improves the corresponding result from Chiang–Feng (Acta Arith. 125(4):317–329, 2006). Examples are provided to show that the main results in this paper, in a sense, are best possible.

Abstract:It is shown that if the equation where R ( z , f ) is rational in both arguments and , has a transcendental meromorphic solution, then the equation above reduces into one out of several types of difference equations where the rational term R ( z , f ) takes particular forms. Solutions of these equations are presented in terms of Weierstrass or Jacobian elliptic functions, exponential type functions or functions which are solutions to a certain autonomous first-order difference equation having meromorphic solutions with preassigned asymptotic behavior. These results complement our previous work on the case of the equation above and thus provide a complete difference analogue of Steinmetz' generalization of Malmquist's theorem.

Abstract:We present two algorithms for computing what we call the absolute factorization of a difference operator. We also give an algorithm to solve third order difference equations in terms of second order equations, together with applications to OEIS sequences. The latter algorithm is similar to existing algorithms for differential equations.

Abstract:The bivariate difference field provides an algebraic framework for a sequence satisfying a recurrence of order two. Based on this, we focus on sequences satisfying a recurrence of higher order, and consider the multivariate difference field, in which the summation problem could be transformed into solving the first order difference equations. We then show a criterion for deciding whether the difference equation has a rational solution and present an algorithm for computing one rational solution of such a difference equation, if it exists. Moreover we get the rational solution set of such an equation.

Abstract:We study families of linear differential equations parametrized by an algebraic variety $\mathcal{X}$ and show that the set of all points $x\in \mathcal{X}$, such that the differential Galois group at the generic fibre specializes to the differential Galois group at the fibre over $x$, is Zariski dense in $\mathcal{X}$. As an application, we prove Matzat's conjecture in full generality: The absolute differential Galois group of a one-variable function field over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero is a free proalgebraic group.

Linear equations with monomial constraints and decision problems in abelian-by-cyclic groups

Abstract:We show that it is undecidable whether a system of linear equations over the Laurent polynomial ring $\mathbb{Z}[X^{\pm}]$ admit solutions where a specified subset of variables take value in the set of monomials $\{X^z \mid z \in \mathbb{Z}\}$. In particular, we construct a finitely presented $\mathbb{Z}[X^{\pm}]$-module, where it is undecidable whether a linear equation $X^{z_1} \boldsymbol{f}_1 + \cdots + X^{z_n} \boldsymbol{f}_n = \boldsymbol{f}_0$ has solutions $z_1, \ldots, z_n \in \mathbb{Z}$. This contrasts the decidability of the case $n = 1$, which can be deduced from Noskov's Lemma. We apply this result to settle a number of problems in computational group theory. We show that it is undecidable whether a system of equations has solutions in the wreath product $\mathbb{Z} \wr \mathbb{Z}$, providing a negative answer to an open problem of Kharlampovich, López and Miasnikov (2020). We show that there exists a finitely generated abelian-by-cyclic group in which the problem of solving a single quadratic equation is undecidable. We also construct a finitely generated abelian-by-cyclic group, different to that of Mishchenko and Treier (2017), in which the Knapsack Problem is undecidable. In contrast, we show that the problem of Coset Intersection is decidable in all finitely generated abelian-by-cyclic groups.

A note on the inverse problem for finite differential Galois groups

Abstract:In this paper we revisit the following inverse problem: given a curve invariant under an irreducible finite linear algebraic group, can we construct an ordinary linear differential equation whose Schwarz map parametrizes it? We present an algorithmic solution to this problem under the assumption that we are given the function field of the quotient curve. The result provides a generalization and an efficient implementation of the solution to the inverse problem exposed by M. van der Put, C. Sanabria and J.Top [19]. As an application, we show that there is no hypergeometric equation with differential Galois group isomorphic to $H_{72}^{SL_3}$, thus completing Beuker and Heckman's answer [4] to the question of which irreducible finite subgroup of $SL_3(\mathbb{C})$ are the monodromy of a hypergeometric equation.

Abstract:The bivariate difference filed $(\mathbb{F}(\alpha, \beta), \sigma)$ provides an algebraic framework for a sequence satisfying a recurrence of order two and it could transform the summation involving a sequence satisfying a recurrence of order two into the first order difference equations in the bivariate difference field. Based on it, we present an algorithm for finding all the polynomial solutions of such equations in the bivariate difference field, and show an upper bound on the degree for polynomial solutions which is sufficient to compute polynomial solution by using the undetermined method.

Solvable difference equations similar to the Newton-Raphson iteration for algebraic equations

Abstract:It is known that difference equations generated as the Newton-Raphson iteration for quadratic equations are solvable in closed form, and the solution can be constructed from linear three-term recurrence relations with constant coefficients. We show that the same construction for four-term recurrence relations gives the solution to the initial value problem of difference equations similar to the Newton-Raphson iteration for cubic equations. In many cases, the solution converges to a root of the cubic equation and the convergence rate is quadratic.

Abstract:We extend Theorem 1 of R. Reams, A Galois approach to m-th roots of matrices with rational entries, LAA 258 (1997), 187-194. Let $p(\lambda)$ be any polynomial over $\mathbb{Q}$ and let $A\in M_n(\mathbb{Q})$ have irreducible characteristic polynomial $f(\lambda)$ with degree n. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a solution $X\in M_n(\mathbb{Q})$ of the polynomial matrix equation $p(X) = A.$ Specifically, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for $f(p(\lambda))$ to have a factor of degree $n$ over $\mathbb{Q}.$

Abstract:We classify order $3$ linear difference operators over $\mathbb{C}(x)$ that are solvable in terms of lower order difference operators. To prove this result, we introduce the notion of absolute irreducibility for difference modules, and classify modules that are irreducible but not absolutely irreducible by using restricted and induced modules. We also show how restriction and induction give coordinate-free formulations of sectioning and interlacing of sequences.

Abstract:In this article we study solutions to second order linear difference equations with variable coefficients. Under mild conditions we provide closed form solutions using finite continued fraction representations. The proof of the results are elementary and based on factoring a quadratic shift operator. As an application, we obtain two new generalized continued fraction formulas for the mathematical constant $\pi^2$.

This theory is the q difference analogue of the Galois theory of iterative differential equations, that is differential equations over fields of positive characteristic.
