Abstract:We extend Theorem 1 of R. Reams, A Galois approach to m-th roots of matrices with rational entries, LAA 258 (1997), 187-194. Let $p(\lambda)$ be any polynomial over $\mathbb{Q}$ and let $A\in M_n(\mathbb{Q})$ have irreducible characteristic polynomial $f(\lambda)$ with degree n. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a solution $X\in M_n(\mathbb{Q})$ of the polynomial matrix equation $p(X) = A.$ Specifically, we find necessary and sufficient conditions for $f(p(\lambda))$ to have a factor of degree $n$ over $\mathbb{Q}.$

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: Given an \(n\times n\) matrix \(A\) with rational entries and a polynomial \(p(\lambda)\), find the rational solution \(X\) of the matrix equation \(p(X) = A\). Specifically, the authors focus on providing the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a rational solution of \(p(X)=A\) when the characteristic polynomial \(f(\lambda)\) of \(A\) is irreducible. ### Specific description of the problem: 1. **Background and motivation**: - The paper continues the work of R. Reams in 1997, who studied the existence problem of the \(m\)-th root of matrix \(A\). - There have been some studies in the literature on \(p(\lambda)\) of specific forms (such as \(p(\lambda)=\lambda^{m}\)), but this paper aims to generalize to the general form of polynomial \(p(\lambda)\). 2. **Main problem**: - Given an \(n\times n\) rational matrix \(A\) whose characteristic polynomial \(f(\lambda)\) is irreducible and \(p(\lambda)\) is a polynomial with rational coefficients. - Find the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a rational solution \(X\in M_{n}(\mathbb{Q})\) of the matrix equation \(p(X) = A\). 3. **Key conclusions**: - The authors prove that the necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a rational solution of \(p(X) = A\) is that \(f(p(\lambda))\) has a factor \(h(\lambda)\) of degree \(n\) in \(\mathbb{Q}[\lambda]\). - Further, this is equivalent to the fact that for each eigenvalue \(\mu\in\sigma(A)\), there exists a \(\gamma\in\mathbb{Q}(\mu)\) such that \(p(\gamma)=\mu\). ### Representation of formulas: - Let \(f(\lambda)\) be the irreducible characteristic polynomial of \(A\), and \(\mu_{i}, 1\leq i\leq n\) be the roots of \(f(\lambda)\). - The polynomial \(p(\lambda)\) has the form \(p(\lambda)=a_{m}\lambda^{m}+a_{m - 1}\lambda^{m-1}+\cdots+a_{0}\). - The necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a rational solution \(X\) of the equation \(p(X) = A\) is that \(f(p(\lambda))\) has a factor \(h(\lambda)\) of degree \(n\) in \(\mathbb{Q}[\lambda]\). Through these conditions, the paper provides a purely algebraic method to determine whether \(p(X) = A\) has a rational solution and gives a specific construction method.
