Abstract:In this study, a 3D model of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell is established, and a new 3D baffle structure is designed, which is combined with the parallel flow field and then optimized by numerical simulation methods. The number of baffles and the cross-sectional trapezoidal base angle are taken as the main variables, and their impacts on the performance indexes of the cathode side are analyzed. The results show that the 3D baffle can facilitate the convection and diffusion mass transfer of reactants, improve the uniformity of oxygen distribution, enhance the drainage capacity, and make the cell performance superior; however, too small angle will lead to excessive local convective mass flux, resulting in the decrease of the overall uniformity of oxygen distribution and lowering the cell performance. Among them, the optimal number of baffles and angle are 9 and 58°, respectively, which improves the net output power density by 10.8% than conventional flow field.

Abstract:Flow channels with baffles can enhance the transport of reactants and improve the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). In this study, five different structures of flow channels with baffles are proposed, and the mass transfer and cell performance of PEMFC with different baffled channels are compared by CFD method. The results show that the PEMFC with a cutting cylindrical baffle has the best performance with an output current density of 1.82 A/m 2 when the voltage is 0.4 V. Baffle design can promote reaction gas transmission while also increasing reaction gas concentration in the channel. Due to the circular arc surface design of the cylindrical section, the mass transfer enhancement effect of cutting baffles is better. When the fluid passes through the baffles, the velocity magnitude also changes abruptly due to the disturbance effect, and the more effective convection brought about by the reactants being pushed into the catalytic layer can enhance the mass transfer in the PEMFC and obtain better performance. The presence of baffles will increase the accumulation of water, the smaller the cross-sectional area, the better the water removal effect. Vortex generation will result in large parasitic power, which is detrimental to the performance of the PEMFC.

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have been utilized as a promising power source for new energy vehicles. Their performances are greatly affected by the structural design of the flow field in the bipolar plate. In this paper, we present a novel three-dimensional (3D) bionic cathode flow field, inspired by the small intestinal villi. The structural design and working principle of the 3D bionic flow field units are first described. A 3D numerical model is developed to study the mass transfer and distribution of the reactants and products, as well as the polarization performances of the PEMFC with the 3D bionic cathode flow field. The simulation results indicate that the proposed 3D bionic flow field can significantly improve the reaction gas supply from the flow field to porous electrodes, and thus would be beneficial for the removal of liquid water in the cathode. The mass transfer of gas in the PEMFC can be enhanced due to the increasing contact areas between the gas diffusion layer (GDL) and the cathode flow field, and the distribution of currents in the membrane would be more uniform. The obtained results demonstrated the feasibility of using the 3D bionic flow field for the development of highly efficient PEMFCs with high power density.

Abstract:Reactants and products distribute unevenly in flow channels of proton exchange membrane fuel cells, therefore, the baffle heights and locations in flow channels exhibit effects on species transportation. In this study, a two-dimensional, two-phase, non-isothermal, and steady state model is developed to study the baffle heights and locations effects on mass transportation and performance of the fuel cells with orientated-type channels. Simulation results show that: uniformly distributing baffles in a flow channel can both enhance the reactants transportation and help expel more liquid water, resulting in higher net powers; although using a big baffle at the upstream segment of a channel enhances the performance more, while the water accumulating is also increased more. Reducing the baffle heights accounts for weaker reactants transfer enhancements and worse liquid water expelling; moving the baffles backwardly also causes the decrease in reactant transportation, while the liquid water expelling process is increased.

Abstract:The structural optimization of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) flow channel can significantly enhance the mass transfer of the reactant gas and improve PEMFC output performance. In this work, a three-dimensional PEMFC geometry model was developed. The effects of baffle shapes on the mass transfer of reactant gas and output performance of PEMFC were investigated by adding three kinds of conventional baffles and six kinds of combined baffles in the flow channel. The results are as follows: The baffles added in the flow channel could increase the pressure drop, enhance the mass transfer of the reactant gas, and significantly increase the reactant gas concentration in the gas diffusion layer (GDL) and the current density in the membrane. When the operating voltage was 0.45 V, the current density and power density of PEMFC with combined It-Re baffles were 2.346 A·cm-2 and 1.056 W·cm-2, respectively, and both improved by 21.8 % compared with that without baffles.

Abstract:Flow field design is critical to improving the overall performance of high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Adding baffles in the flow channel has been proven to be effective in enhancing mass transfer. In this study, fuel cells with different baffle numbers, heights, and arrangements are numerically simulated to investigate the effects of reactant velocity, concentration distribution, and pressure drop on mass transfer and output performance. The results show that baffles are beneficial in improving cell performance, especially under high current density. With the increase in baffle number and height, the concentration of the reactant at the outlet decreases and the output power increases with the increase in pressure drop. The net power density growth rate is defined to characterize the cell performance. A lower pressure drop reduces the pumping power loss generated during reactant transfer, resulting in a staggered baffle structure with the highest net power density of 4329.65 W/m2. Compared with the traditional and parallel baffle channels, this value is improved by about 11.74% and 4.83%, respectively. Therefore, the optimized baffle channel can enhance the mass transfer, reduce the pumping power, and further improve the cell performance, providing an effective guide for the optimal design and development direction of the orientated flow channel.

Abstract:Orientated-type flow channels having porous blocks enhance the reactant transfer into gas diffusion layers of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. However, because of the blockages accounted by baffles and porous blocks in channel regions, pumping power increases. In this study, with the aim of further reducing the pumping power in flow channels with porous-blocked baffles, an orientated-type flow channel with streamline baffles having porous blocks is proposed. By employing an improved two-fluid model, cell performance, liquid water distribution and pumping power in a single flow channel are numerically studied. The simulation results show that the baffles with porous blocks increase the cell performance, and the streamline baffles with larger volumes further increase the performance; the produced water in porous regions is ejected more under inertial effect, especially at the regions near to baffles in gas diffusion layers and inside porous blocks. In addition, by using the streamline baffles, the excessive increase in power loss is further reduced. Moreover, the location and porosity effects of baffles with porous blocks are analyzed. Simulation results show that the location exhibits obscure effects on reactant transfer and cell performance, while the liquid water can be removed more when the porous blocked baffles are concentrated at downstream. The net power is enhanced more when using three porous blocks with the porosity of 0.00.

Abstract:Developing state-of-the-art bipolar plate structures, to optimize fluid distribution, is essential to achieve better cell performance. In this paper, a three-dimensional model of PEMFC is developed and two cathode-side flow field structures are designed: two-dimensional and three-dimensional types. The two-dimensional type is the traditional "bipolar plate + gas diffusion layer" flow field structure, easily resulting in uneven distribution of reactant gas and other problems. This study describes three novel three-dimensional type flow fields (metal foam, fine-mesh, and wire-mesh). Through comprehensive performance analysis using numerical simulations, it is found that the three-dimensional type flow fields significantly improve mass transfer and output performance compared to two-dimensional type flow fields. The proposed three-dimensional type flow fields create forced convective fluid flow. It further enhances the diffusion dispersion of reactant gas, thus making fuller use of the active region. Among them, the wire-mesh flow field shows the best performance in terms of oxygen distribution, water distribution and electrical properties. The net output power density produced is 0.75068 W cm-2, higher than parallel flow field by 32.78%.

Abstract:An appropriate flow field in the bipolar plates of a fuel cell can effectively enhance the reactant transport rates and liquid water removal efficiency, improving cell performance. This paper proposes a novel serpentine-baffle flow field (SBFF) design to improve the cell performance compared to that for a conventional serpentine flow field (SFF). A three-dimensional model is used to analyze the reactant and product transport and the electrochemical reactions in the cell. The results show that at high operating voltages, the conventional design and the baffled design have the same performance, because the electrochemical rate is low and only a small amount of oxygen is consumed, so the oxygen transport rates for both designs are sufficient to maintain the reaction rates. However, at low operating voltages, the baffled design shows better performance than the conventional design. Analyses of the local transport phenomena in the cell indicate that the baffled design induces larger pressure differences between adjacent flow channels over the entire electrode surface than does the conventional design, enhancing under-rib convection through the electrode porous layer. The under-rib convection increases the mass transport rates of the reactants and products to and from the catalyst layer and reduces the amount of liquid water trapped in the porous electrode. The baffled design increases the limiting current density and improves the cell performance relative to conventional design.

Abstract:The design of the fuel cell cathode flow field affects its internal heat and mass transfer, thus influencing the fuel cell performance. Building on previous research on 3D flow fields, this study analyzes the impact of the ratio of the main and sub channels width, the ratio of the main/sub channel length to the transition region width on mass transfer and performance. The study proposes a 3D flow field design with a gradual variation in the length of main/sub channels. Numerical and experimental analysis was carried out and results indicate that reducing the D/d ratio can better alleviate ohmic losses at medium and low current densities, while reducing the L/W ratio can better alleviate concentration losses at high current densities. Compared to traditional parallel straight flow field PEMFC, the power density of the gradient 3D flow field PEMFC could increase by 21.54% at 1.9 A·cm −2 . The experimental result of the PEMFC is basically consistent with the numerical simulation.

Abstract:The structure of the flow field can directly affect the gas distribution and the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). This work presents the modifications of porous flow fields in PEMFCs using the computational fluid dynamics method. Different designs of porous flow fields are employed and evaluated, so as to improve the uniformity of the cell performances over the entire cell area. The effects of manifold structure on the distribution of the key operating parameters including the reactant molar fraction, temperature, current density, etc. are discussed. It is found that the manifold designs can significantly affect the flow behaviors in the porous flow fields, especially in the corner area. The convergent inlet and divergent outlet manifold channels favor homogenizing the flow distribution and reducing the pressure drop. Moreover, a proper porosity of the flow field can benefit the uniform distribution of the reactant and improve the cell performance.

Abstract:The effects of the design and optimization of trapezoidal channels and baffles on the net power density of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are studied. The significant effects of the length of upper and lower sides of the trapezoidal cross section and the number and position of baffles on the net power density of PEMFC have been investigated. It is found that at the same flow rate, changing the effective contact surface between the flow channel and the gas diffusion layer can tremendously improve the current density of fuel cells; moreover, the performance of a PEMFC based on the addition of a baffle can be further improved. The results show that the trapezoidal cross-sectional flow channel with baffles has higher efficiency and better overall performance compared with a basic straight flow channel. In addition, the response surface was used to optimize the trapezoidal cross-sectional flow channel by considering the power loss of output power and the flow rate. The optimal result was obtained with an upper side length of 1.234 mm, a lower side length of 1.8 mm, and a baffle from the entrance at 9.5 mm, increasing the net power density by 4.347%.

Abstract:This study used a three-dimensional numerical model of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell with five types of channels: a smooth channel (Case 1); eight rectangular baffles were arranged in the upstream (Case 2), midstream (Case 3), downstream (Case 4), and entire cathode flow channel (Case 5) to study the effects of baffle position on mass transport, power density, net power, etc. Moreover, the effects of back pressure and humidity on the voltage were investigated. Results showed that compared to smooth channels, the oxygen and water transport facilitation at the GDL-Channel interface were added 11.53%−20.60% and 7.81%−9.80% at 1.68 A·cm −2 by adding baffles. The closer the baffles were to upstream, the higher the total oxygen flux, but the lower the flux uniformity and the worse the water removal. The oxygen flux of upstream baffles was 8.14% higher than that of downstream baffles, but oxygen flux uniformity decreased by 18.96% at 1.68 A·cm −2 . The order of water removal and voltage improvement was Case 4 > Case 5 > Case 3 > Case 2 > Case 1. Net power of Case 4 was 9.87% higher than smooth channel. To the Case 4, when the cell worked under low back pressure or high humidity, the voltage increments were higher. The potential increment for the backpressure of 0 atm was 0.9% higher than that of 2 atm. The potential increment for the humidity of 100% was 7.89% higher than that of 50%.

Abstract:Optimizing the flow channel structures can improve the efficiency of proton exchange membrane fuel cells and promote the efficient utilization of clean energy. This study investigates the impacts of rectangular-baffle and tapered flow channels on electrical performance, temperature distribution and mass transfer of proton exchange membrane fuel cells, based on a 3D, multi-physical model. The equivalent average depth is adopted as the reference benchmark to mitigate the influence of channel depth. Results indicate that adopting variable-depth channels enhances convective mass transfer on the porous layer surface under higher voltage. The convective mass transfer of oxygen is dominant in the activation polarization region, while diffusion is dominant in the concentration polarization region. Variable-depth channels enhance heat and mass transfer in comparison to the straight channel. The tapered channel can improve the mass transfer flux in oxygen starvation region, and the drainage ability of the rectangular baffle channel is inferior to the tapered channel. The rectangular baffle channel demonstrates better convective heat transfer performance and temperature uniformity. A rectangular-baffle channel can increase net power by 4.31%, while a tapered channel can achieve a maximum increase of 9.27% when the pumping power is considered. Therefore, incorporating a tapered channel is an optimal strategy to boost cell efficiency.

Abstract:The transfer processes of reactants and products affect each other in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), because they have contrast transfer directions between flow channels and gas diffusion layers (GDLs). In this study, a two‐dimensional, two‐phase, non‐isothermal and steady state model is developed to analyze the species transportation behaviors through diffusion and convection in PEMFCs with orientated‐type flow channels. Five conventional shape baffles effects on mass transfers are compared, and the relationships between convection and diffusion of reactants and produced water vapor are discussed. Simulation results reveal that baffle shapes affect the mass transportation through the baffles leading angles and volumes, and larger leading angles enhance the reactants and the water vapor convective transferring into GDLs; meanwhile, larger baffle volumes enhance the reactant transferring into GDLs and water vapor transferring out from GDLs through diffusion processes. In addition, transportation processes of reactants and vapor affect each other, where more reactants convectively transferring into GDLs causes more water vapor entering GDLs; enhancing the reactants diffusively transferring into GDLs reduces water vapor diffusive transportation out from GDLs.

Abstract:Numerical and experimental study of the PEMFC with a novel three-dimensional WPFF is investigated.The PEMFC with WPFF improves the net power.The WPFF with three-dimensional structure promote the transportation of oxygen to the catalytic layer.The narrow region in WPFF enhances the gas flow velocity and improves the water management of PEMFC.The performance and operation stability of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are closely related to the transportation of reactants and water management in the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) and flow field. In this paper, a new three-dimensional wave parallel flow field (WPFF) in cathode was designed and analyzed throughout simulation studies and an experimental method. The experimental results show that the performance of PEMFC with WPFF outperforms that of PEMFC with straight parallel flow field (SPFF). Specifically, the peak power density increased by 13.45% for the PEMFC with WPFF as opposed to PEMFC with SPFF. In addition, the flow field with area of 11.56 cm2 was formed by the assembly of transparent end plate used for cathode and the traditional graphite plate used for anode. To understand the mechanism of the novel flow field improving the performance of PEMFC, a model of PEMFC was proposed based on the geometry, operating conditions and MEA parameters. The thickness of gas diffusion layers (GDL), catalytic layers (CL) and proton exchange membrane were measured by scanning electron microscope. The simulation result shows that compared with SPFF, the WPFF based PEMFC promote the oxygen transfer from flow channel to the surface of CL through GDL, and it was beneficial to remove the liquid water in the flow channel and the MEA.

Abstract:Reasonable flow channel designs play a significant role in improving the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). The effect of the zigzag flow channels with three different numbers of turns on the performance of PEMFC was investigated in this paper. The polarization curves, molar concentration of oxygen and water, and power density were analyzed, and the numerical results showed that the overall performance of the zigzag flow channels was significantly better than that of the conventional parallel flow channel. With the increase of the number of turns from 3 to 9, the performance of PEMFC was gradually improved, the diffusion capacity of oxygen to the interface of the electrochemical reaction was also promoted, and the low oxygen concentration regions were gradually reduced. When the number of turns was 9, the current density of PEMFC was 8.85% higher than that of the conventional parallel channel at the operating voltage of 0.4 V, and the oxygen non-uniformity at the between gas diffusion layer (GDL) and catalyst layer (CL) interface was the minimum with a value of 0.51. In addition, the molar concentration of water in the channel also decreased. Due to the relatively large resistance of the zigzag flow channels, the maximum pressure drop of the zigzag flow channel was 263.5 Pa, which was also conducive to the improvement of the drainage effect of the conventional parallel flow channel. With the increase of the number of turns in the zigzag channel, the pressure drop and parasitic power density gradually increased. The 9-zigzag flow channel obtained the maximum pressure drop and net power density, which were 263.5 Pa and 2995.6 W/m 2 , respectively.

Abstract:The pressure drops and pumping powers in flow channels of proton exchange membrane fuel cells are major standards to evaluate flow channel structures. Baffled flow channels provide higher performance, while the pressure drop and pumping power both aggravate. In this work, the impact of baffle leeward length on power output and pressure drops of proton exchange membrane fuel cells are experimentally studied. The pumping power, net power and power efficiency are calculated as well. Experimental results indicate that pressure drops increase when adding baffles in channels, and longer leeward lengths result in lower pressure drops. Higher cell temperature results in lower pressure drops. The time consuming for stabilizing pressure drop are shortened when using baffles having longer leeward lengths. The net power is increased when using larger baffles, and the highest net powers occur under the temperature of 333K or 343K. In addition, raising the cell temperature can increase the power efficiency, and when the leeward lengths of baffles are decreased, the power efficiency is also decreased. When using baffle without sloping leeward sides, the power efficiency can be decreased to 45.14% under lower cell temperature of 323K.

Numerical Study on the Performance of Fuel Cell with a Radial Serpentine Flow Field

Abstract:The flow field structure of bipolar plates has an important impact on the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Ideal flow field design improves water management capabilities and mass and heat transfer, thereby enhancing the overall performance of the fuel cell. This article combines the traditional serpentine flow channel (TSFF) and the radial flow channel to design the radial serpentine flow field (RSFF). CFD simulation shows that the current density of RSFF is increased by a maximum of 31.2% and the power density is increased by a maximum of 21.5% compared with TSFF. Moreover, due to the higher pressure drop, the water management capability of the flow field is improved.

Abstract:The enhanced mass transfer flow fields have been proven to be an effective measure to improve the cell performance of low‐temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells, yet little research has been done for high‐temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT‐PEMFC). In this work, three types of cathode‐enhanced mass transfer flow fields (tapered, staggered‐blocked, and blocked) are designed. The effects of various flow fields on the reactant delivery, current density distribution uniformity, and net power output of HT‐PEMFC are quantitatively investigated and compared. It is found that the three enhanced mass transfer flow fields can effectively increase the performance of HT‐PEMFC by transforming the traditional diffusion into a combination of diffusion and forced convection. In the sight of the superior performance and lower flow resistance, the tapered flow field is thought to be the optimal candidate for HT‐PEMFC among the four flow fields, with a 12.21% net power increment and 5.32% current density distribution uniformity improvement at 1.4 A/cm2 compared to the conventional flow field. These results support further performance enhancements and applications of HT‐PEMFC.
