Abstract:The fabrication of pouch cell prototypes is of particular importance in advancing battery technology by validating materials, concepts, or manufacturing processes. To this aim, these prototypes are generally manually designed at the laboratory scale and therefore subject to human error or reproducibility failures. Identifying these faults before systematic testing or a post-mortem study can greatly improve safety while saving time. Infrared thermography, a safe and contactless technique used in a wide range of scientific and industrial applications, has the potential to become a powerful inspection method in the battery field. This paper shows, through numerical and experimental examples, that pulsed thermography is highly suitable for the non-destructive study of complex systems such as pouch cells by providing detailed mapping of realistic defects in a very short time. Various well-established data processing methods were evaluated in a contrast-to-noise ratio study and visual inspection to provide a set of guidelines adapted for each approach.
