Abstract:This paper studies the dynamics of proton flux in the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) region according to ARINA (was operated on the Resurs-DK1 satellite from 2006 to 2015) and VSPLESK (which was mounted on the ISS from 2008 to 2013) satellite experiment data. Both spectrometers have the same scheme. The SAA drift is determined by the position of the maximum flux of high-energy protons with energies in the range from 30 to 100 MeV at the altitude of the Resurs-DK1 satellite (about 580 km) and the ISS (380–420 km). Part of the time the instruments operated simultaneously.

Solar Cycle Variations of Trapped Proton Flux in the Inner Radiation Belt

Abstract:Trapped proton population in the inner radiation belt is highly dense, posing a potential danger to astronauts and man‐made space assets traversing through this region. While being significantly stable within timescales up to hundreds of days, inner zone proton fluxes can exhibit considerable solar cycle variations, which has not been investigated comprehensively yet. To analyze the long‐term variation of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA), we adopt the proton flux data measured by NOAA 15 from 1999 through 2009 and perform statistical analyses on the basis of reasonable Gaussian fits. We report that the variation of the peak proton flux in the SAA is anticorrelated with that of F10.7 during a solar cycle. There also exists a phase lag of 685 days between the solar F10.7 flux and the proton flux. Similar features are seen for changes of the SAA distribution area, which in addition shows a rapid decrease during the solar maximum and a slow increase during the solar minimum. We also find that the region where the proton flux peaks drifts westward year by year with larger drift rates during the solar minimum. The peak region shifts southward during the solar maximum but in the opposite direction during the solar minimum with higher shift speed. Enhancements in solar wind dynamic pressure can favor the north‐south drift of the SAA.
Proton flux variations during Solar Energetic Particle Events, minimum and maximum solar activity, and splitting of the proton belt in the South Atlantic Anomaly

Abstract:The analysis of the proton flux variations observed by the Energetic Particle Telescope (EPT) at energies > 9.5 MeV from the launch of PROBA‐V satellite on 7 May 2013 up to October 2022 shows an anti‐correlation between the proton fluxes and the solar phase. At solar minimum, the fluxes are higher at low L corresponding to the northern border of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA). This solar cycle modulation of the inner belt is mainly due to losses by increased atmospheric interactions during solar maximum. Strong Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) events, like in January 2014, June 2015 and September 2017, inject energetic protons at high latitudes, but not in the inner belt where protons are trapped at long term at low L. Nevertheless, big geomagnetic storms, including those following SEP a few days after, can cause losses of protons at the outer border of the proton belt, due to magnetic field perturbations. A double peak in the proton belt is observed during long period of measurements only for the EPT channel of 9.5‐13 MeV. The narrow gap between the two peaks in the inner belt is located around L=2. This resembles to a splitting of the proton belt, separating the SAA into two different parts, North and South. The high‐resolution measurements of PROBA‐V/EPT allow the observation of small‐scale structures that brings new elements to the understanding of the different source and loss mechanisms acting on the proton radiation belt at LEO. Abstract:The South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) is a region of weakened geomagnetic field and in the previous studies, it shows a secular variation with time which is associated with the changing of the magnetic moment. This region also consists of large amounts of energetic charged particles and is danger to space vehicle and astronauts. Thus, it is essential to know the location and movement of the SAA. In this study, three particle monitors onboard Insight-HXMT are used to track the movement and location of the SAA from 2017 June 19 to 2019 June 19. Several particle flux maps are built to show the location of the SAA peak with time. In a grid of map, the particle count is determined by the maximum count rate and the averaged count rate, respectively. We find the results of both methods are consistent very well with each other in deriving the drift rate. The result shows the SAA peak moves westwards with an average drift rate of 0.43 +/- 0.01 degrees/yr in longitude and moves northwards with an average drift rate of 0.17 +/- 0.01 degrees/yr in latitude, and the drift rate is slightly larger than the result from IGRF 12 (0.3 degrees/yr) in longitude, but in latitude, the result of IGRF 12 have no obvious change with time. Abstract:The sequence of events associated with the triggering of energy release during substorm expansion phase onset is still not well‐understood. Oberhagemann and Mann (2020b, https://doi.org/10.1029/2019gl085271) proposed a new substorm onset mechanism, where the transition toward parallel proton pressure anisotropy during tail stretching in the late growth phase could trigger a pressure anisotropic ballooning instability. Here we examine the evolution of energetic proton parallel pressure anisotropy at geosynchronous altitudes, seeking evidence in support of the proposed substorm onset mechanism. We use the Geostationary Operational Environment Satellite (GOES) proton flux and magnetometer data combined with substorm onset indicators derived from ground‐based magnetometers. Superposed epoch analysis of substorm onset times for 2014 using the isolated substorm list (Ohtani & Gjerloev, 2020, https://doi.org/10.1029/2020ja027902) clearly shows signatures of energetic proton parallel pressure anisotropy immediately before substorm onset, potentially supportive of the Oberhagemann and Mann theory.

Abstract:"Zebra stripes" denote banded structures characterized by periodic peaks and valleys in the spectrograms of energetic electrons in the Earth's inner radiation belt and slot region. In contrast to previous investigations primarily grounded in equatorial observations, this study presents two events exhibiting the evolution of electron zebra stripes within the South Atlantic Anomaly, as observed from the Macao Scientific Satellite-1 in low Earth orbit. Our findings affirm that the structural and evolutionary features of zebra stripes in both events accord with the drift echo hypothesis. The start time extrapolated from the electron spectrograms correlates with substorm onsets, consistent with prior conclusions. Notably, the duration of zebra stripe evolution during the event of June 5–6, 2023, reaches an impressive 34.7 h, a markedly longer interval than findings from the Van Allen Probes. This discrepancy suggests that the observed lifetime of electron zebra stripes may not inherently reflect natural limitations but could be constrained by instrumental capabilities. The results implicate that high-energy-resolution detectors have the potential to significantly enhance our capacity to scrutinize the dynamics of the radiation belt.

Abstract:A long-term variation of the inner zone high-energy proton environment at low orbits was investigated by DSTM using the adiabatic approximation of charge particle motion with NASA standard radiation models as reference states. The DST results show that over the past three decades the fluxes of high-energy protons at ∼1000 km in the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) noticeably increased, the center region of proton SAA apparently moved westward and expanded. Calculations of the L-shell averaged lifetime of high-energy protons indicate that the DST provides a reasonable means for estimation of the secular variation of inner zone proton environ-ment.

Abstract:In this study, we carry out a comprehensive analysis of secular variation of the South Atlantic Anomaly. The center location of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) is derived from the proton flux measurements of different energy channels by SAMPEX (Solar Anomalous and Magnetospheric Particle Explorer)/PET (Proton/Electron Telescope). The results are compared with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/Medium Energy Proton and Electron Detector observations and the International Geomagnetic Reference Field 12 (IGRF12) geomagnetic field model. It is found that different energy protons have different behaviors while the center location of the SAA changes with altitude. The IGRF12 magnetic field can explain the observations to a limited extent. Possible reasons for the differences are discussed. It is confirmed that center location of the SAA is also affected by atmospheric density at SAMPEX altitudes. The results could be helpful for constructing inner radiation belt models.

Abstract:Since the inception of the international South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation initiative in the 21st century, substantial advances have been made in observing and understanding the Southern Hemisphere component of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). Here we synthesize insights gained into overturning flows, interocean exchanges, and water mass distributions and pathways in the South Atlantic. The overturning circulation in the South Atlantic uniquely carries heat equatorward and exports freshwater poleward and consists of two strong overturning cells. Density and pressure gradients, winds, eddies, boundary currents, and interocean exchanges create an energetic circulation in the subtropical and tropical South Atlantic Ocean. The relative importance of these drivers varies with the observed latitude and time scale. AMOC, interocean exchanges, and climate changes drive ocean warming at all depths, upper ocean salinification, and freshening in the deep and abyssal ocean in the South Atlantic. Long-term sustained observations are critical to detect and understand these changes and their impacts.

Abstract:The six-satellite Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere and Climate (COSMIC) mission makes routine ionospheric measurements over the entire globe using occultation techniques. These observations have been used in this study to develop global-scale climate maps of NmF2 and h(m)f(2) during the southern (northern) summer (winter). Enhanced electron densities that appear to be associated with the southern, equatorial (Appleton) anomaly are displaced far southward at dusk and, within about an hour, form the Weddell Sea anomaly. Coincidentally, the height of the F-2 peak increases on the northern boundary of this anomaly. This height increase is also displaced southward as the enhanced electron densities are displaced southward, suggesting that the electron density increases are associated with the F-2 peak rising. As well as being an interesting phenomenon in its own right, this behavior may shed new light on the formation of the Weddell Sea anomaly. No unambiguous explanation for this behavior can be determined from the data presently available, but an examination of some possibilities suggests that an evening downward flux of plasma from the plasmasphere may be at least partly responsible for the phenomenon.

Abstract:Abstract The South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) refers to a region where the strength of the magnetic field is notably weaker compared to a dipole field. While previous studies have primarily focused on its effects on the inner radiation belt, this study investigates its impact on the aurora system. By analyzing 2 years' worth of data obtained by the Fengyun‐3E/ACMag instrument, we discover that magnetic fluctuations within the auroral oval are significantly weaker in the longitude sector corresponding to the SAA, as compared to those outside this area. This characteristic remains permanent and independent of seasons and geomagnetic activities. Additional investigation using Defense Meteorological Satellite Program/Special Sensor Ultraviolet Spectrographic Imager (DMSP/SSUSI) observations reveals a similar phenomenon in the auroral intensity. Therefore, our results demonstrate that the SAA substantially weakens the aurora system, shedding new light on the effects of magnetic anomalies on planetary auroras and magnetosphere‐ionosphere‐thermosphere coupling.

Abstract:Substantial fluxes of protons and leptons with energies below the geomagnetic cutoff have been measured by the AMS experiment at altitudes of 370-390 Km, in the latitude interval +/- 51.7 degrees. The production mechanisms of the observed trapped fluxes are investigated in detail by means of the FLUKA Monte Carlo simulation code. All known processes involved in the interaction of the cosmic rays with the atmosphere (detailed descriptions of the magnetic field and atmospheric density, as well as the electromagnetic and nuclear interaction processes) are included in the simulation. The results are presented and compared with the experimental data, indicating good agreement with the observed fluxes. The impact of secondary proton flux on particle production in atmosphere is briefly discussed.

The surface thermal signature and air–sea coupling over the Agulhas rings propagating in the South Atlantic Ocean interior

Abstract:Abstract. The surface signature of Agulhas rings propagating across the South Atlantic Ocean is observed based on three independent data sets: Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for the Earth Observing System/Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI) (TMI/AMSR-E) satellite sea surface temperature, Argo profiling floats and a merged winds product derived from scatterometer observations and reanalysis results. A persistent pattern of cold (negative) sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the eddy core, with warm (positive) anomalies at the boundary, is revealed. This pattern contrasts with the classical idea of a warm core anticyclone. Taking advantage of a moving reference frame corresponding to the altimetry-detected Agulhas rings, modifications of the surface winds by the ocean-induced currents and SST gradients are evaluated using satellite SST and wind observations. As obtained, the averaged stationary thermal expression and mean eddy-induced circulation are coupled to the marine atmospheric boundary layer, leading to surface wind anomalies. Consequently, an average Ekman pumping associated with these mean surface wind variations consistently emerges. This average Ekman pumping is found to explain very well the SST anomaly signatures of the detected Agulhas rings. Particularly, this mechanism seems to be the key factor determining that these anticyclonic eddies exhibit stationary imprints of cold SST anomalies near their core centers. A residual phase with the maximum sea surface height (SSH) anomaly and wind speed anomaly is found to the right of the mean wind direction, apparently maintaining a coherent stationary thermal expression coupled to the marine atmospheric boundary layer.

Abstract:Long-term variations of South Atlantic anomaly (SAA) are generally derived by fitting a Gaussian-like function to an averaged distribution of the proton flux at a certain altitude accumulated over time periods for a month or longer. These data do not show the short-term variation of SAA arising from geomagnetic storm effects whose time scale is less than a month. To investigate the short-term variations, the features of SAA for the high-energy protons detected by NOAA Polar Orbiting Environmental Satellites during 1998-2008 have been investigated with a 5 day running average method. It is found that the two SAA parameters for three proton channels reflect the maximal proton flux in SAA and the extension of SAA decreases several percent during geomagnetic storms. Possible reasons for the decreases of the two SAA parameters for high-energy protons are discussed. Proton losses at the outer boundary of the inner radiation belt can be explained by the field line curvature scattering mechanism, while the decrease of the proton flux near the center of SAA is probably caused by the enhanced neutral atmospheric density during geomagnetic storms. The study of the behavior of high-energy protons in SAA is useful for understanding of storm time and long-term variations of the radiation environment near Earth and for constructing dynamic radiation belt models.
