Abstract:A variety of nonthermal characteristics like kinetic, e.g., temperature, anisotropies and suprathermal populations (enhancing the high energy tails of the velocity distributions) are revealed by the in-situ observations in the solar wind indicating quasistationary states of plasma particles out of thermal equilibrium. Large deviations from isotropy generate kinetic instabilities and growing fluctuating fields which should be more efficient than collisions in limiting the anisotropy (below the instability threshold) and explain the anisotropy limits reported by the observations. The present paper aims to decode the principal instabilities driven by the temperature anisotropy of electrons and protons in the solar wind, and contrast the instability thresholds with the bounds observed at 1 AU for the temperature anisotropy. The instabilities are characterized using linear kinetic theory to identify the appropriate (fastest) instability in the relaxation of temperature anisotropies Ae,p=Te,p,⊥/Te,p,∥≠1\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$A_{e,p} = T_{e,p,\perp}/ T _{e,p,\parallel} \ne1$\end{document}. Limits on the Core Temperature Anisotropy of Solar Wind Protons

Abstract:We analyse the temperature anisotropy of the protons in the solar wind and thereby concentrate on plasma data obtained in the year 1976 of the Helios 1 and Helios 2 missions. We derive the core proton temperatures and , in the directions perpendicular and parallel to the magnetic field, as well as the core parallel plasma beta, . The data are separately analysed for two distance ranges, AU and AU, and divided into 24 bins for the plasma beta, in the range from to , and into 72 bins for the total temperature anisotropy, , which is here considered in the range from −0.9 to 0.9. The number of spectra in each bin is determined to obtain distributions. The statistical results are presented in two-dimensional histograms. For each column we define a critical upper and lower limit of the anisotropy. The resulting empirical points are compared with the known theoretical instability thresholds. The protons are found to come with increasing radial distance closer to the fire-hose instability threshold.
Limits on Alpha Particle Temperature Anisotropy and Differential Flow from Kinetic Instabilities: Solar Wind Observations

Abstract:Previous studies have shown that the observed temperature anisotropies of protons and alpha particles in the solar wind are constrained by theoretical thresholds for pressure-anisotropy-driven instabilities such as the Alfvén/ion-cyclotron (A/IC) and fast-magnetosonic/whistler (FM/W) instabilities. In this letter, we use a long period of in-situ measurements provided by the {\em Wind} spacecraft's Faraday cups to investigate the combined constraint on the alpha-proton differential flow velocity and the alpha-particle temperature anisotropy due to A/IC and FM/W instabilities. We show that the majority of the data are constrained to lie within the region of parameter space in which A/IC and FM/W waves are either stable or have extremely low growth rates. In the minority of observed cases in which the growth rate of the A/IC (FM/W) instability is comparatively large, we find relatively higher values of $T_{\perp\alpha}/T_{\perp p}$ ($T_{\parallel\alpha}/T_{\parallel p}$) when alpha-proton differential flow velocity is small, where $T_{\perp\alpha}$ and $T_{\perp p}$ ($T_{\parallel\alpha}$ and $T_{\parallel p}$) are the perpendicular (parallel) temperatures of alpha particles and protons. We conjecture that this observed feature might arise from preferential alpha-particle heating which can drive the alpha particles beyond the instability thresholds.

Abstract:Electron temperature anisotropies and electron beams are nonthermal features of the observed nonequilibrium electron velocity distributions in the solar wind. In collision-poor plasmas these nonequilibrium distributions are expected to be regulated by kinetic instabilities through wave–particle interactions. This study considers electron instabilities driven by the interplay of core electron temperature anisotropies and the electron beam, and first gives a comprehensive analysis of instabilities in arbitrary directions to the background magnetic field. It clarifies the dominant parameter regime (e.g., parallel core electron plasma beta , core electron temperature anisotropy , and electron beam velocity V eb) for each kind of electron instability (e.g., the electron beam-driven electron acoustic/magnetoacoustic instability, the electron beam-driven whistler instability, the electromagnetic electron cyclotron instability, the electron mirror instability, the electron firehose instability, and the ordinary-mode instability). It finds that the electron beam can destabilize electron acoustic/magnetoacoustic waves in the low- regime, and whistler waves in the medium- and large- regime. It also finds that a new oblique fast-magnetosonic/whistler instability is driven by the electron beam with in a regime where and A ec < 1. Moreover, this study presents electromagnetic responses of each kind of electron instability. These results provide a comprehensive overview for electron instability constraints on core electron temperature anisotropies and electron beams in the solar wind.

Abstract:The frequency distribution of solar wind protons, measured in the vicinity of Earth's orbit, is customarily plotted in (β ∥ , T ⊥ /T ∥ ) phase space. Here, T ⊥ /T ∥ is the ratio of perpendicular and parallel temperatures, and β ∥ = 8π nT ∥ /B 2 is the ratio of parallel thermal energy to background magnetic field energy, the so-called "parallel beta," with ⊥ and ∥ denoting directions with respect to the ambient magnetic field. Such a frequency distribution, plotted as a two-dimensional histogram, forms a peculiar rhombic shape defined with an outer boundary in the said phase space. Past studies reveal that the threshold conditions for temperature anisotropy–driven plasma instability partially account for the boundary on the high-β ∥ side. The low-β ∥ side remains largely unexplained despite some efforts. Work by Vafin et al. recently showed that certain contours of collisional relaxation frequency, ν pp , when parameterized by T ⊥ /T ∥ and β ∥ , could match the overall shape of the left-hand boundary, thus suggesting that the collisional relaxation process might be closely related to the formation of the left-hand boundary. The present paper extends the analysis by Vafin et al. and carries out the dynamical computation of the collisional relaxation process for an ensemble of initial proton states with varying degrees of anisotropic temperatures. The final states of the relaxed protons are shown to closely match the observed boundary to the left of the (β ∥ , T ⊥ /T ∥ ) phase space. When coupled with a similar set of calculations for the ensemble in the collective instability regime, it is found that the combined collisional/collective effects provide the baseline explanation for the observation.

Fire Hose instability driven by alpha particle temperature anisotropy

Abstract:We investigate properties of a solar wind-like plasma including a secondary alpha particle population exhibiting a parallel temperature anisotropy with respect to the background magnetic field, using linear and quasi-linear predictions and by means of one-dimensional hybrid simulations. We show that anisotropic alpha particles can drive a parallel fire hose instability analogous to that generated by protons, but that, remarkably, the instability can be triggered also when the parallel plasma beta of alpha particles is below unity. The wave activity generated by the alpha anisotropy affects the evolution of the more abundant protons, leading to their anisotropic heating. When both ion species have sufficient parallel anisotropies both of them can drive the instability, and we observe generation of two distinct peaks in the spectra of the fluctuations, with longer wavelengths associated to alphas and shorter ones to protons. If a non-zero relative drift is present, the unstable modes propagate preferentially in the direction of the drift associated with the unstable species. The generated waves scatter particles and reduce their temperature anisotropy to marginally stable state, and, moreover, they significantly reduce the relative drift between the two ion populations. The coexistence of modes excited by both species leads to saturation of the plasma in distinct regions of the beta/anisotropy parameter space for protons and alpha particles, in good agreement with in situ solar wind observations. Our results confirm that fire hose instabilities are likely at work in the solar wind and limit the anisotropy of different ion species in the plasma.

Abstract:The new in situ measurements of the Solar Orbiter mission contribute to the knowledge of the suprathermal populations in the solar wind, especially of ions and protons whose characterization, although still in the early phase, seems to suggest a major involvement in the interaction with plasma wave fluctuations. Recent studies point to the stimulating effect of suprathermal populations on temperature anisotropy instabilities in the case of electrons already being demonstrated in theory and numerical simulations. Here, we investigate anisotropic protons, addressing the electromagnetic ion-cyclotron (EMIC) and the proton firehose (PFH) instabilities. Suprathermal populations enhance the high-energy tails of the Kappa velocity (or energy) distributions measured in situ, enabling characterization by contrasting to the quasi-thermal population in the low-energy (bi-)Maxwellian core. We use hybrid simulations to investigate the two instabilities (with ions or protons as particles and electrons as fluid) for various configurations relevant to the solar wind and terrestrial magnetosphere. The new simulation results confirm the linear theory and its predictions. In the presence of suprathermal protons, the wave fluctuations reach increased energy density levels for both instabilities and cause faster and/or deeper relaxation of temperature anisotropy. The magnitude of suprathermal effects also depends on each instability's specific (initial) parametric regimes. These results further strengthen the belief that wave-particle interactions govern space plasmas. These provide valuable clues for understanding their dynamics, particularly the involvement of suprathermal particles behind the quasi-stationary non-equilibrium states reported by in situ observations.

Abstract:Typical solar wind electrons are modeled as being composed of a dense but less energetic thermal "core" population plus a tenuous but energetic "halo" population with varying degrees of temperature anisotropies for both species. In this paper, we seek a fundamental explanation of how these solar wind core and halo electron temperature anisotropies are regulated by combined effects of collisions and instability excitations. The observed solar wind core/halo electron data in (β ∥ , T ⊥ /T ∥ ) phase space show that their respective occurrence distributions are confined within an area enclosed by outer boundaries. Here, T ⊥ /T ∥ is the ratio of perpendicular and parallel temperatures and β ∥ is the ratio of parallel thermal energy to background magnetic field energy. While it is known that the boundary on the high-β ∥ side is constrained by the temperature anisotropy-driven plasma instability threshold conditions, the low-β ∥ boundary remains largely unexplained. The present paper provides a baseline explanation for the low-β ∥ boundary based upon the collisional relaxation process. By combining the instability and collisional dynamics it is shown that the observed distribution of the solar wind electrons in the (β ∥ , T ⊥ /T ∥ ) phase space is adequately explained, both for the "core" and "halo" components.

Impact of Two-Population $α$-particle Distributions on Plasma Stability

Abstract:The stability of weakly collisional plasmas is well represented by linear theory, and the generated waves play an essential role in the thermodynamics of these systems. The velocity distribution functions (VDF) characterizing kinetic particle behavior are commonly represented as a sum of anisotropic bi-Maxwellians. For the majority of in situ observations of solar wind plasmas enabled by heliospheric missions, a three bi-Maxwellian model is commonly applied for the ions, assuming that the VDF consists of a proton core, proton beam, and a single He ($\alpha$) particle population, each with their own density, bulk velocity, and anisotropic temperature. Resolving an $\alpha$-beam component was generally not possible due to instrumental limitations. The Solar Orbiter Solar Wind Analyser Proton and Alpha Sensor (SWA PAS) resolves velocity space with sufficient coverage and accuracy to routinely characterize secondary $\alpha$ populations consistently. This design makes the SWA PAS dataset ideal for examining effects of the $\alpha$-particle beam on the plasma's kinetic stability. We test the wave signatures observed in the magnetic field power spectrum at ion scales and compare them to the predictions from linear plasma theory, Doppler-shifted into the spacecraft reference frame. We find that taking into account the $\alpha$-particle beam component is necessary to predict the coherent wave signatures in the observed power spectra, emphasizing the importance of separating the $\alpha$-particle populations as is traditionally done for protons. Moreover, we demonstrate that the drifts of beam components are responsible for the majority of the modes that propagate in oblique direction to the magnetic field, while their temperature anisotropies are the primary source of parallel Fast Magnetosonic Modes in the solar wind.

Proton temperature anisotropy and magnetic reconnection in the solar wind: effects of kinetic instabilities on current sheet stability

Abstract:We investigate the role of kinetic instabilities driven by a proton anisotropy on the onset of magnetic reconnection by means of 2-D hybrid simulations. The collisionless tearing of a current sheet is studied in the presence of a proton temperature anisotropy in the surrounding plasma. Our results confirm that anisotropic protons within the current sheet region can significantly enhance/stabilize the tearing instability of the current. Moreover, fluctuations associated to linear instabilities excited by large proton temperature anisotropies can significantly influence the stability of the plasma and perturb the current sheets, triggering the tearing instability. We find that such a complex coupling leads to a faster tearing evolution in a regime with larger perpendicular temperature when an ion-cyclotron instability is generated by the anisotropic proton distribution functions. On the contrary, in the presence of the opposite anisotropy, fire hose fluctuations excited by the unstable background protons with larger parallel temperature are not able to efficiently destabilize the current sheets, which remain stable for a long time after fire hose saturation. We discuss possible influences of this novel coupling on the solar wind and heliospheric plasma dynamics.

Abstract:The problems of heating and acceleration of solar wind particles are of significant and enduring interest in astrophysics. The interactions between waves and particles are crucial in determining the distributions of proton and alpha particles, resulting in non-Maxwellian characteristics including temperature anisotropies and particle beams. These processes can be better understood as long as the beam can be separated from the core for the two major components of the solar wind. We utilized an alternative numerical approach that leverages the clustering technique employed in Machine Learning to differentiate the primary populations within the velocity distribution, rather than employing the conventional bi-Maxwellian fitting method. Separation of the core and beam revealed new features for protons and alphas. We estimated that the total temperature of the two beams was slightly higher than that of their respective cores, and the temperature anisotropy for the cores and beams was larger than 1. We concluded that the temperature ratio between alphas and protons largely over 4 is due to the presence of a massive alpha beam, which is approximately 50\% of the alpha core. We provided evidence that the alpha core and beam populations are sensitive to Alfvénic fluctuations and the surfing effect found in the literature can be recovered only when considering the core and beam as a single population. Several similarities between proton and alpha beams would suggest a common and local generation mechanism not shared with the alpha core, which may not have necessarily been accelerated and heated locally.

Abstract:Although it has been long that spacecraft observed the anisotropy of velocity protons in the solar wind, there is still not a reasonable explanation. In this paper we try to give an explanation from the diffusion plateau of proton cyclotron resonance predicted by the quasi-linear theory for the resonance between the protons and the parallel propagating waves. We consider the effect of dispersion relation on diffusion plateau and notice that the diffusion plateau we have got by using cold plasma dispersion relation accords with the density contours in the velocity phase space detected at 0.3 AU in fast solar wind. For explaining proton distributions obtained in the fast solar wind from 0.7 AU to 1 AU hot plasma dispersion relation should be considered. We also give a theoretical relation of proton thermal anisotropy A and plasma parameter β.
Proton Heating in Solar Wind Compressible Turbulence with Collisions Between Counter-Propagating Waves

Abstract:Magnetohydronamic turbulence is believed to play a crucial role in heating laboratory, space, and astrophysical plasmas. However, the precise connection between the turbulent fluctuations and the particle kinetics has not yet been established. Here we present clear evidence of plasma turbulence heating based on diagnosed wave features and proton velocity distributions from solar wind measurements by the Wind spacecraft. For the first time, we can report the simultaneous observation of counter-propagating magnetohydrodynamic waves in the solar wind turbulence. As opposed to the traditional paradigm with counter-propagating Alfven waves (AWs), anti-sunward AWs are encountered by sunward slow magnetosonic waves (SMWs) in this new type of solar wind compressible turbulence. The counter-propagating AWs and SWs correspond, respectively, to the dominant and sub-dominant populations of the imbalanced Elsasser variables. Nonlinear interactions between the AWs and SMWs are inferred from the non-orthogonality between the possible oscillation direction of one wave and the possible propagation direction of the other. The associated protons are revealed to exhibit bi-directional asymmetric beams in their velocity distributions: sunward beams appear in short, narrow patterns and anti-sunward in broad extended tails. It is suggested that multiple types of wave-particle interactions, i.e., cyclotron and Landau resonances with AWs and SMWs at kinetic scales, are taking place to jointly heat the protons perpendicular and in parallel.
Local proton heating at magnetic discontinuities in Alfvenic and non-Alfvenic solar wind

Abstract:We investigate the local proton energization at magnetic discontinuities/intermittent structures and the corresponding kinetic signatures in velocity phase space in Alfvénic and non-Alfvénic wind streams observed by Parker Solar Probe. By means of the Partial Variance of Increments method, we find that the hottest proton populations are localized around compressible, kinetic-scale magnetic structures in both types of wind. Furthermore, the Alfvénic wind shows preferential enhancements of $T_\parallel$ as smaller scale structures are considered, whereas the non-Alfvenic wind shows preferential $T_\bot$ enhancements. Although proton beams are present in both types of wind, the proton velocity distribution function displays distinct features. Hot beams, i.e., beams with beam-to-core perpendicular temperature up to three times larger than the total distribution anisotropy, are found in the non-Alfvénic wind, whereas colder beams in the Alfvénic wind. Our data analysis is complemented by 2.5D hybrid simulations in different geometrical setups, which support the idea that proton beams in Alfvénic and non-Alfvénic wind have different kinetic properties and origins. The development of a perpendicular nonlinear cascade, favored in balanced turbulence, allows a preferential relative enhancement of the perpendicular plasma temperature and the formation of hot beams. Cold field-aligned beams are instead favored by Alfvén wave steepening. Non-Maxwellian distribution functions are found near discontinuities and intermittent structures, pointing to the fact that the nonlinear formation of small-scale structures is intrinsically related to the development of highly non-thermal features in collisionless plasmas.

Abstract:Large-scale compressive slow-mode-like fluctuations can cause variations in the density, temperature, and magnetic-field magnitude in the solar wind. In addition, they also lead to fluctuations in the differential flow $U_{\rm p\alpha}$ between $\alpha$-particles and protons ($p$), which is a common source of free energy for the driving of ion-scale instabilities. If the amplitude of the compressive fluctuations is sufficiently large, the fluctuating $U_{\rm p\alpha}$ intermittently drives the plasma across the instability threshold, leading to the excitation of ion-scale instabilities and thus the growth of corresponding ion-scale waves. The unstable waves scatter particles and reduce the average value of $U_{\rm p\alpha}$. We propose that this "fluctuating-beam effect" maintains the average value of $U_{\rm p\alpha}$ well below the marginal instability threshold. We model the large-scale compressive fluctuations in the solar wind as long-wavelength slow-mode waves using a multi-fluid model. We numerically quantify the fluctuating-beam effect for the Alfvén/ion-cyclotron (A/IC) and fast-magnetosonic/whistler (FM/W) instabilities. We show that measurements of the proton-$\alpha$ differential flow and compressive fluctuations from the {\it Wind} spacecraft are consistent with our predictions for the fluctuating-beam effect. This effect creates a new channel for a direct cross-scale energy transfer from large-scale compressions to ion-scale fluctuations.

Abstract:The expanding solar wind plasma ubiquitously exhibits anisotropic nonthermal particle velocity distributions. Typically, proton velocity distribution functions (VDFs) show the presence of a core and a field-aligned beam. Novel observations made by the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) in the innermost heliosphere have revealed new complex features in the proton VDFs, namely anisotropic beams that sometimes experience perpendicular diffusion. In this study, we use a 2.5D fully kinetic simulation to investigate the stability of proton VDFs with anisotropic beams observed by PSP. Our setup consists of a core and an anisotropic beam population that drift with respect to each other. This configuration triggers a proton beam instability from which nearly parallel fast magnetosonic modes develop. Our results demonstrate that before this instability reaches saturation, the waves resonantly interact with the beam protons, causing perpendicular heating at the expense of the parallel temperature.

Formation of the Proton Beam Distribution in High‐speed Solar Wind

Abstract:A new mechanism is suggested to explain the formation of proton beam velocity distributions in high‐speed streams of the solar wind. The proton beam is a well‐known kinetic phenomenon, which was already found in the early days of solar wind in situ measurements [Feldman et al., 1973; Marsch et al., 1982a; Rosenbauer et al., 1981]. Observationally, proton beams move faster than the core part of the proton distribution by more than the Alfvén speed. The beam has a higher temperature than the core, but the thermal anisotropy is usually smaller. Until today none of the major properties of the observed beams have been adequately explained. The basic difficulty faced by previous investigations is that in a proton‐electron plasma, hardly any cyclotron waves are found to be in resonance with the beam protons. However, when considering a proton‐alpha‐electron plasma, we find a second dispersion branch of outward propagating RHP and LHP waves. This branch is mainly determined by the alpha particles drifting at the Alfvén speed. The associated waves can resonate with the beam protons, and the resulting cyclotron‐resonance‐induced diffusion produces a beam velocity distribution. The time‐dependent two‐dimensional diffusion equation, as determined from the quasi‐linear theory of ion cyclotron‐wave resonance, is solved numerically. A proton beam distribution is shown to form, by diffusion in the wave field, out of an initial shuttle‐like bi‐Maxwellian velocity distribution function. The drift velocity of the model beam is about the Alfvén speed. The perpendicular thermal speed is about 44 km/s, and the thermal anisotropy of the beam is much less than the core anisotropy. Limitations of the present model and work to be done in the future are also discussed.
