Abstract:An objective method is developed to monitor the stability of spaceborne instruments, aimed at distinguishing climate trend from instrument drift in satellite-based climate observation records. This method is based on four-years of Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) broadband observations of deep convective cloud systems with cloud-top temperature lower than 205 K and with large optical depths. The implementation of this method to the CERES instrument stability analysis reveals that the monthly albedo distributions are practically the same for deep convective clouds with CERES measurements acquired from both the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission and Terra satellite platforms, indicating that CERES instruments are well calibrated and stable during both missions. Furthermore, with a nonlinear regression neural network narrowband-broadband conversion, this instrument-stability monitoring method can also be applied to narrowband instruments such as the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the Visible Infrared Scanner (VIRS). The results show that the drifts associated with both VIRS and MODIS instruments are less than 1% during a four-year period. Since the CERES albedo measurements are highly accurate, the absorptance of these opaque clouds can be reliably estimated. The absorptions of these clouds from observations are around 25%, whereas the absorptions from theory can be as low as 18%, depending on ice cloud microphysics.

Abstract:Since 1996, global, near-real-time maps of mesoscale anomalies derived from tandem sampling provided by altimeters aboard the TOPEX/Poseidon and ERS-2 satellites have been posted on web pages hosted at the Colorado Center for Astrodynamics Research. The original, near-real-time processing system was based on a quick-look analysis that referenced the data to a high-resolution gridded mean sea surface available at the time. Recently, state-of-the-art mean sea surfaces have been derived that are based on a more complete record of altimeter observations. An updated mesoscale monitoring system based on a new mean surface is described and shown to provide improved mesoscale monitoring to the successful system implemented in 1996.

Abstract:Abstract Climate-related sea level changes in the world coastal zones result from the superposition of the global mean rise due to ocean warming and land ice melt, regional changes caused by non-uniform ocean thermal expansion and salinity changes, and by the solid Earth response to current water mass redistribution and associated gravity change, plus small-scale coastal processes (e.g., shelf currents, wind & waves changes, fresh water input from rivers, etc.). So far, satellite altimetry has provided global gridded sea level time series up to 10–15 km to the coast only, preventing estimation of sea level changes very close to the coast. Here we present a 16-year-long (June 2002 to May 2018), high-resolution (20-Hz), along-track sea level dataset at monthly interval, together with associated sea level trends, at 429 coastal sites in six regions (Northeast Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea, Western Africa, North Indian Ocean, Southeast Asia and Australia). This new coastal sea level product is based on complete reprocessing of raw radar altimetry waveforms from the Jason-1, Jason-2 and Jason-3 missions.

Abstract:Ionospheric total electron content (TEC) maps with high spatial and temporal resolutions are essential for depicting the state of the ionosphere and for performing ionospheric delay corrections associated with satellite navigation applications. Low Earth orbit (LEO) CubeSat-based global navigation satellite system (GNSS) reflectometry (GNSS-R) measurements provide a promising opportunity for retrieval of ionospheric TEC over sea ice and calm waters, which offers a potential new data source to fill the gaps of ground-based GNSS networks. However, the GNSS-R slant TEC (sTEC) estimations include contributions from the incident and reflection ray paths, whose ionospheric piercing points (IPPs) can be separated by hundreds of kilometers. This article presents an algorithm that integrates sTEC measurements from the GNSS-R CubeSats and available ground-based GNSS receivers to derive Arctic vertical TEC (vTEC) maps. A simulation study using the model ionosphere constructed from the NeQuick-2 is conducted to assess the performance of the algorithm. Varying levels of temporal resolutions and solar activities, and the number of CubeSats and the number of maximum simultaneously tracked reflection signals by a CubeSat are implemented in the simulation. The results show that the inclusion of coherent GNSS-R measurements improves the accuracy of the vTEC maps under all levels of solar activities. The RMSE improvement percentage is most obvious when the update interval is the shortest. Increasing the number of CubeSats further improves the accuracy. However, no significant improvement in vTEC map accuracy is observed when the number of maximum simultaneously tracked GNSS-R satellites is higher than 4. Quantitative measures and analyses of the algorithm performances are presented in this article.

Global submesoscale diagnosis using along-track satellite altimetry

Abstract:The ocean's sea surface height (SSH) field is a complex mix of motions in geostrophic balance and unbalanced motions including high-frequency tides, internal tides, and internal gravity waves. Barotropic tides are well estimated for altimetric SSH in the open ocean, but the SSH signals of internal tides remain. The transition scale, L t , at which these unbalanced ageostrophic motions dominate balanced geostrophic motions is estimated for the first time using satellite altimetry. L t is critical to define the spatial scales above which surface geostrophic currents can be inferred from SSH gradients. We use a statistical approach based on the analysis of 1 Hz altimetric SSH wavenumber spectra to obtain four geophysical parameters that vary regionally and seasonally: the background error, the spectral slope in the mesoscale range, a second spectral slope at smaller scales, and L t . The mesoscale slope and error levels are similar to previous studies based on satellite altimetry. The break in the wavenumber spectra to a flatter spectral slope can only be estimated in midlatitude regions where the signal exceeds the altimetric noise level. Small values of L t are observed in regions of energetic mesoscale activity, while larger values are observed towards low latitudes and regions of lower mesoscale activity. These results are consistent with recent analyses of in situ observations and high-resolution models. Limitations of our results and implications for reprocessed nadir and future swath altimetric missions are discussed.

A New Sea Surface Height–Based Code for Oceanic Mesoscale Eddy Tracking

Abstract:Abstract This paper presents a software tool that enables the identification and automated tracking of oceanic eddies observed with satellite altimetry in user-specified regions throughout the global ocean. As input, the code requires sequential maps of sea level anomalies such as those provided by Archiving, Validation, and Interpretation of Satellite Oceanographic (AVISO) data. Outputs take the form of (i) data files containing eddy properties, including position, radius, amplitude, and azimuthal (geostrophic) speed; and (ii) sequential image maps showing sea surface height maps with active eddy centers and tracks overlaid. The results given are from a demonstration in the Canary Basin region of the northeast Atlantic and are comparable with a published global eddy track database. Some discrepancies between the two datasets include eddy radius magnitude, and the distributions of eddy births and deaths. The discrepancies may be related to differences in the eddy identification methods, and also possibly to differences in the smoothing of the sea surface height maps. Variability Assessment of Global Extreme Coastal Sea Levels Using Altimetry Data

Abstract:This study assesses the variability of coastal extreme sea levels globally by utilizing nearly three decades of along-track, multi-mission satellite altimetry data. An altimetry-based global coastal database of the non-tidal residual sea level component has been produced. The climate variability of extremes is modeled through a parametric, non-stationary statistical model. This model captures intra-annual, inter-annual and long-term variations in non-tidal residual return levels. Comparisons with tide gauge data demonstrate the ability of altimetry data to capture the variability of coastal extreme sea levels. Our findings reveal a greater complexity in the monthly variability patterns of non-tidal residual extremes in tropical latitudes, often exhibiting multiple storm periods, contrasting with coasts in extratropical latitudes, which are mostly controlled by a winter–summer pattern. This study also highlights the significant influence of established climate circulation patterns on sea level extremes. The positive phase of the Arctic Oscillation pattern leads to increases of over 25% in non-tidal residual return levels in Northwestern Europe with respect to a neutral phase. Furthermore, return levels in the western coast of Central America could be 50% higher during El Niño compared to La Niña. Our results show a robust increasing trend in non-tidal residual return levels along most global coastlines. A comparative analysis shows that variations during the 1995–2020 period were primarily driven by intra-annual variations.

Abstract:We use total (sea ice plus snow) freeboard as estimated from Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) Geophysical Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) observations to compute Antarctic sea-ice thickness and volume. In order to overcome assumptions made about the relationship between snow depth and total freeboard or biases in snow depth products from satellite microwave radiometry, we implement a new algorithm. We treat the sea ice-snow system as one layer with reduced density, which we approximate by means of a priori information about the snow depth to sea-ice thickness ratio. We derive this a priori information directly from ICESat total freeboard data using empirical equations relating in-situ measurements of total freeboard to snow depth or sea-ice thickness. We apply our new algorithm (one-layer method or OLM), which uses the buoyancy equation approach without the need for auxiliary snow depth data, to compute sea-ice thickness for every ICESat GLAS footprint from a valid total freeboard. An improved method for sea-ice volume retrieval is also used to derive ice volume at 6.25 km scale. Spatio-temporal variations of sea-ice thickness and volume are then analyzed in the circumpolar Antarctic as well as its six sea sectors: Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Weddell East, Weddell West, Bell-Amund Sea, and Ross Sea, under both interannual and seasonal scales. Because the OLM algorithm relies on only one parameter, the total freeboard, and is independent of auxiliary snow depth information, it is believed to become a viable alternative sea-ice thickness retrieval method for satellite altimetry.
Eddy energy of the northwest Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico determined from GEOS 3 altimetry

Abstract:From May 1975 to October 1978 the GEOS 3 satellite altimeter made numerous repeated observations of sea surface topography in the northwest Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. By comparing members of about 1000 collinear pairs of altimeter profiles, we have determined mesoscale sea height variability and eddy kinetic energy in these ocean regions. Our results agree qualitatively with estimates made from traditional oceanographic surveys, but significant quantitative differences exist in certain areas, especially in the Gulf Stream between Florida and Cape Hatteras where the altimetric results show less variability. The reason for this appears to be due to differences in spatial sampling. Historical oceanographic measurements are relatively sparse and must be aggregrated into small geographic boxes to compute variability statistics. Results therefore represent a combination of temporal and spatial variability. In contrast, repeated satellite altimeter tracks provide point measurements of changes of sea height and slope. This enables determination of temporal variability alone, a quantity more representative of eddy energy. It is important to make this distinction between space and time because in regions of strong horizontal gradient such as the Gulf Stream, spatial variability can exceed the temporal component. In mid‐ocean where spatial variability is negligible, altimetric and oceanographic results are in excellent agreement.

Abstract:The sea ice extent in the Weddell Sea exhibited a positive trend from the start of satellite observations in 1978 until 2016 but has shown a decreasing trend since then. This study analyzes seasonal and interannual variations in sea ice thickness using ICESat-2 laser altimetry data over the Weddell Sea from 2019 to 2022. Sea ice thickness was calculated from ICESat-2's ATL10 freeboard product using the Improved Buoyancy Equation. Seasonal variability in ice thickness, characterized by an increase from February to September, is more pronounced in the eastern Weddell sector, while interannual variability is more evident in the western Weddell sector. The results were compared with field data obtained between 2019 and 2022, showing a general agreement in ice thickness distributions around predominantly level ice. A decreasing trend in sea ice thickness was observed when compared to measurements from 2003 to 2017. Notably, the spring of 2021 and summer of 2022 saw significant decreases in Sea Ice Extent (SIE). Although the overall mean sea ice thickness remained unchanged, the northwestern Weddell region experienced a noticeable decrease in ice thickness.

Abstract:Estimates of directional wave spectra and related parameters can be obtained from ship motion data through the wave-buoy analogy approach. The fundamental input is the response amplitude operator (RAO), which translates ship response into a wave energy spectrum. While ship motion is routinely measured on ocean going vessels, the RAO is not directly available and it is approximated using ship hydrodynamic models . The lack of publicly available details of hull geometry and loading conditions can results in significant inaccuracy of this operator. Considering the reliability of remotely sensed wave height, here we propose an assimilation technique that uses satellite altimeter observations to calibrate the RAO and minimise its uncertainties. The method is applied to estimate sea state conditions during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition by converting motion response of the icebreaker Akademik Tryoshnikov as recorded by the on-board inertial measurement unit . Comparison against concurrent sea state observations obtained from a marine radar device shows a good agreement for a variety of parameters including significant wave height, wave periods and mean wave direction.

Abstract:This study evaluated feasibility statistically and analyzed, during the freezing period, the relationship between brightness temperature (Tb) data of the 37V polarisation and the GR3719 (Gradient Ratio 37V and 19V) obtained by Special Sensor Microwave/Imager from F11 and F13 satellites with sea ice thickness (SIT) data obtained in the Weddell Sea through Antarctic Sea Ice Processes and Climate program. The multiple linear regression (MLR) was applied at 1,520 points, with 70% of these points being randomly separated to generate the MLR and 30% to carry out the validation. To perform the temporal mapping, the MLR was applied only to pixels with sea ice concentration (SIC) ≥ 90%, obtained through the fraction image calculated from the spectral linear mixing model (SLMM) using the Tb in the channels and polarizations 19H, 19V and 37V. The results of the SLMM validation process for estimating the SIC were σ = 10.5%, RMSE = 11.0%, and bias = -2.8%, and the SIT based on the MLR, the results were R² = 0.57, RMSE = 0.268 m, and bias = 0.103 m. In the SIT mapping, we highlight the trend of thickness reduction on the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula during the period 1992-2009.
Deep ocean hydrographic variability estimated from distributed geodetic sensor arrays off northern Chile

Abstract:Observations of spatio-temporal variability of the deep ocean are rare and little is known about occurrence of deep ocean mesoscale dynamics. Here, we make use of 2.5 years of time series data from three distributed sensor arrays, which acquired high-resolution temperature, pressure and sound speed data of the bottom layer offshore northern Chile. Estimating salinity and density from the direct observations enable access to the full spectrum of hydrographic variability from a multi-hourly to annual time scale and with average inter-station distances of less than 1 km. Analyses revealed interannual warming over the continental slope of 0.002 °C yr-1-0.003 °C yr-1, and could trace periodic hydrographic anomalies, likely related to coastal-trapped waves, as far as to the lower continental slope. A concurrent change in the shape of the warm anomalies and the rate of deep-sea warming that occurs with the crossing of the deep-sea trench suggests that the abyssal part of the eastern boundary current system off Chile does not extend past the deep sea trench. Furthermore, the comparison of anomaly timing and shape in between stations implies southwards flow over the mid to lower continental slope, centred closer to the trench.
Variability in wet and dry snow radar zones in the North of the Antarctic Peninsula using a cloud computing environment

Abstract:This work investigated the annual variations in dry snow (DSRZ) and wet snow radar zones (WSRZ) in the north of the Antarctic Peninsula between 2015-2023. A specific code for snow zone detection on Sentinel-1 images was created on Google Earth Engine by combining the CryoSat-2 digital elevation model and air temperature data from ERA5. Regions with backscatter coefficients (σ⁰) values exceeding -6.5 dB were considered the extent of surface melt occurrence, and the dry snow line was considered to coincide with the -11 °C isotherm of the average annual air temperature. The annual variation in WSRZ exhibited moderate correlations with annual average air temperature, total precipitation, and the sum of annual degree-days. However, statistical tests indicated low determination coefficients and no significant trend values in DSRZ behavior with atmospheric variables. The results of reducing DSRZ area for 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 compared to 2018/2018 indicated the upward in dry zone line in this AP region. The methodology demonstrated its efficacy for both quantitative and qualitative analyses of data obtained in digital processing environments, allowing for the large-scale spatial and temporal variations monitoring and for the understanding changes in glacier mass loss.
Mapping the spatial and temporal SST variations in the Red Sea, revealing a probable regional geothermal anomaly using Pathfinder V5 data

Abstract:The idea is presented that satellite-derived night-time thermal maps can be used for the identification of regional sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies that may be related to geothermal processes. The analysis of night-time monthly Pathfinder V5 SST data indicated that November is the month for which the SST seasonal variability is minimized while the impact of the assumed SST anomaly is maximized. The methods used included SST domain slicing, frequency histogram interpretation and time series analysis (TSA using standardized principal component analysis, PCA) of the multi-temporal dataset while K-means cluster analysis identified a negative (cold) SST anomaly. The spatial pattern of SST variations includes a major SST anomaly south of 21° N and a stair step SST variation to the north. SST November data for an 8-year period were used to verify the spatial pattern of the thermal anomaly. Ocean dynamics and water circulation, as well as possible perennial dust storms from the Arabian Shield over the Red Sea and the degassing of underwater soft sediments, were considered as dominant factors controlling the SST anomalies observed. Because of their spatial and temporal structure, the SST variations are more likely to be related to geothermal-geotectonic activity in the Red Sea.

Abstract:Detailed mapping based on the high-resolution grids, such as GEBCO, ETOPO1, GlobSed, EGM-2008 is crucial for various domains of Earth sciences: geophysics, glaciology, Quaternary, sedimentology, geology, environmental science, geomorphology, etc. The study presented a GMT-based scripting techniques of the cartographic data processing aimed at the comparative analysis of the bathymetry, sediment thickness, geologic objects and geophysical settings in the study area based on various datasets. The study area is located in the Ross Sea, Antarctic. The highest values of the sediment thickness over 7,500 m are dominating in the southwest segment of the Ross Sea closer to the Victoria Land, followed by the region over the Ross Ice Shelf with values between 5,500 to 7,000 m (170°-175°W). The increased sediment thickness (2,500 to 3,000 m) was also mapped seen in the region NE off the Sulzberger Bay (70-75°S to 140-155°W), caused by the closeness of the Marie Bird Land ice coasts. A remarkable correlation between the gravity and the topography of the sea-land border in the Marie Bird Land area is well reflected in the coastal line and a set of the higher values in the free-air gravity. On the contrary, negative values (–60 to -80 mGal) are notable along the submarine toughs stretching parallel in the western part of the basin: e.g. the trough stretching in NW-SE direction in the 170°W-175°E, 65°S-68°S, between the 167°W-175°W, 70°S-72°S. Such correlations are clearly visible on the map, indicating geological lineaments and bathymetric depressions correlating with gravity grids. The paper contributes to the regional studies of the Ross Sea, the Antarctic and Polar region, and development of the cartographic technical methodologies by presenting an application of the GMT for thematic mapping.

Abstract:In the absence of in-situ data, satellite radar altimetry, critical for studies requiring water elevation data, faces challenges in outlier removal over reservoirs, influenced by surrounding land. We present JASTER (Jason Altimetry Stand-Alone Tool for Enhanced Research), an open-source, fully automated tool processing Jason-2/3 altimetry data for water elevation time series generation over a user-defined inland water body. JASTER uses two outlier removal approaches. The first method employs interquartile range (IQR)-based filtering and K-means clustering. The second method incorporates water occurrence (WO) and Digital Elevation Model (DEM)-derived elevation thresholds. The Hampel filter embedded in JASTER further removes non-physical peaks in the time series caused by signal noise. We validated JASTER's capabilities using 44 Jason altimeter crossings over 37 water bodies in the US and Canada. We assessed the significance of applying water occurrence and elevation thresholds, and investigated how the Hampel filter parameters and satellite crossing lengths affect accuracy. In all case studies, the Hampel filter significantly increased the consistency between JASTER-derived water elevations and in-situ data. Moreover, the DEM + WO-based method outperformed the IQR-based outlier removal approach in some cases where the greater number of altimeter footprints belonged to land instead of water.

Abstract:<p>The development of regional services able to provide ionospheric vertical total electron content (VTEC) maps and ionospheric indexes with a high spatial resolution, and in near-real-time, are of great importance for both civilian applications and the research community. We provide here the methodologies, and an assessment, of such a system. It relies on the public Global Navigational Satellite Systems (GNSS) infrastructure in South America, incorporates data from multiple constellations (currently GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou), employs multiple frequencies, and produces continental wide VTEC maps with a latency of just a few minutes. To assess the ability of our system to model the ionospheric behavior we performed a year-round intercomparison between our near-real-time regional VTEC maps, and VTEC maps of verified quality produced by several referent analysis centers, resulting in mean biases lower than 1 TEC units (TECU). Also, the evaluation of our products against direct and independent GNSS-based slant TEC measurements shows RMS values better than 1 TECU. In turn, ionospheric weather W-index maps were generated, for calm and disturbed geomagnetic scenarios, solely employing our quality verified VTEC maps. The spatial representation of these W-index maps reflects the state of the ionosphere, with a resolution of <span class="math"><math>0.5×0.5</math></span> degrees. Finally, we conclude that our products, computed every 15 minutes, do provide an excellent spatial representation of the regional TEC, and are able to provide the bases for the possible computation of ionospheric W-index maps, also in near-real-time.</p>

Exploratory Mapping of Blue Ice Regions in Antarctica Using Very High-Resolution Satellite Remote Sensing Data

Abstract:Mapping spatiotemporal changes in the distribution of blue ice regions (BIRs) in Antarctica requires repeated, precise, and high-resolution baseline maps of the blue ice extent. This study demonstrated the design and application of a newly-developed semi-automatic method to map BIRs in the Antarctic environment using very high-resolution (VHR) WorldView-2 (WV-2) satellite images. We discussed the potential of VHR satellite data for the mapping of BIRs in the Antarctic environment using a customized normalized-difference blue-ice index (NDBI) method devised using yellow, green, and near-infrared spectral bands of WV-2 data. We compared the viability of the newly developed customized NDBI approach against state-of-the-art target detection (TD), spectral processing (SP) and pixel-wise supervised (PSC) feature extraction (FE) approaches. Four semi-automatic FE approaches (three existing plus one newly developed) consisting of 16 standalone FE methods (12 existing + four customized) were evaluated using an extensive quantitative and comparative assessment for mapping BIRs in the vicinity of Schirmacher Oasis, on the continental Antarctic coastline. The results suggested that the customized NDBI approach gave a superior performance and the highest statistical stability when compared with existing FE techniques. The customized NDBI generally rendered the lowest level of misclassification (average RMSE = 654.48 ± 58.26 m2), followed by TD (average RMSE = 987.81 ± 55.05 m2), SP (average RMSE = 1327.09 ± 127.83 m2) and PSC (average RMSE = 2259.43 ± 115.36 m2) for mapping BIRs. Our results indicated that the use of the customized NDBI approach can greatly improve the semi-automatic mapping of BIRs in the Antarctic environment. This study presents the first refined map of distribution of BIRs around the Schirmacher Oasis. The total area of blue ice in the study area was estimated to be 106.875 km2, approximately 61% of the study area. The WV-2 derived BIR map area presented in this study locally refined the existing BIR map derived using Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-based mosaic of Antarctica (MOA) dataset by ~31% (~33.40 km2). Finally, we discussed the practical challenges and future directions in mapping BIRs across Antarctica.
