Study on College Students' Experience About MOOC-Based Flipped Classroom Practice--Based on the Analysis of 231 Online Learning Diaries

Abstract:MOOCs and flipped classroom practice have become hot topics in educational research area and more and more researchers have carried out studies related to the experience of faculty members and students with MOOCs and flipped classroom. To better understand college students' experience about MOOCs and to experiment new methods of classroom teaching in universities, this study attempted to apply MOOC-based flipped classroom practice to an undergraduate course named Internet and Distance Education and carried out in the College of Education at Zhejiang University. Qualitative research method was utilized in the study. The collected 231 online learning diaries were analyzed by NVivo 8 from five dimensions: learners, teachers, curriculum, technology and environment. Diary analysis found that students have not only experienced rich emotional changes during the MOOC-based flipped classroom practice, but also have they improved knowledge, perspectives, skills and their metacognitive abilities; in terms of interaction preference, students preferred to choose face-to-face discussion instead of online asynchronous interaction; the instructor's guidance and encouragement were very important for students' positive and successful online learning experience; multiple evaluation formats allowed students to understand that the learning process was more important than the final scores. Although students like such features as flexibility, autonomy and diversity in the MOOC-based flipped classroom practice, some problems were also mentioned in students' diaries, like the annoying network firewall, the boring course videos, the language barriers and so on. Based on above findings, the requirements for such innovational classroom practice were summarized:better technical support and guarantee, the role transformation of instructors and learners, diversified activities and evaluation design and creation of interactive learning environment.
A Comparative Study of Representative MOOCs Projects in China and Overseas

Abstract:In recent years, massive open online courses ( MOOCs) have attracted world wide extensive attentions in the field of higher education. Various types of media made a large number of reports on MOOCs. Many companies also showed their interests in developing and implementing MOOCs. The United States took the lead in diffusing MOOCs practice and put forward famous projects such as Udemy, Udacity, Coursera, edX and etc. During the similar time period, some European companies, together with local higher education institutions, launched their own MOOCs pro-jects. The Ministry of Education in China and leading Chinese universities are also actively exploring MOOCs with its own features. This study aims to provide useful experiences and lessons for developing MOOCs in China through reviewing the origin and connotation of MOOCs and comparing 13 representative MOOCs projects in the world. This comparative a-nalysis is conducted from three dimensions:contents, tools, and practice. The 13 selected representative MOOCs pro-jects involved in the study are Udemy、Coursera、Udacity、edX、Canvas Network, FutureLearn、OpenupEd、iversity、ALI-SON, OpenLearning and Open2Study, ewant and Xuetang online. Among these projects, five are from America, four from Europe, two from Australia, and two from China. In the dimension of content, the study compared the 13 pro-jects according to three sub-dimensions:number and types of courses provided by each project, manner of course or-ganization and the main features of course design of these projects. In the dimension of tools, the study compared the 13 projects according to three sub-dimensions: learning management system, tool development, and usage of social software. In the dimension of practice, the study compared the 13 projects according to four sub-dimensions:operators and co-operators of each project, the operating modes of each project, types of copyright protection adopted in the pro-jects, and the availability and the types of course certificates. The results of the study are as follows. i) First, the number and types of courses provided by each MOOCs project varies a great deal among the 13 selected projects. Some projects provides thousands or hundreds of courses, while oth-ers provided courses no more than one hundred. In contrast, Chinese MOOCs projects are still at its starting stage and more Chinese MOOCs are expected to emerge in the near future. As to course type, some projects focuses on science, technology or business-related courses, while others focuses one humanities and social science-related courses. There are two typical manners of course organization: time-bounded or no time-bounded. There are also similarities and differences among these 13 projects in the design of course content, interaction, and assessment. ii) Second, in terms of tool usage, most of the projects don't open the source codes of their learning management systems, while all of the 13 projects adopts one or more mainstream social software, such as blog, facebook, twitter, google+, Wiki, weixin, weibo, and etc. In addition, many of the 13 projects developed a variety of online instructional or learning tools for instructors, learners or their target companies. iii) Third, most projects are still in the initial stage of implementation and most of them have not adopted the Creative Commons ( CC) for the copyright of course content. As to credits and certificates, most of the MOOCs would provide course certificates when learners successfully complete their courses and only a few of projects would offer credit certificates. Based on these findings, we propose strategies for the construction of Chinese MOOCs. i) First, course design should be learner-centered and designers should pay special attention to interaction and evaluation design for MOOCs' participants. ii) Second, developing or selecting learning management system should consider MOOCs providers' resources and there need to be a variety of online learning tools. iii) Third, Chinese institutions need to explore the operation models of various MOOCs and to seek a sustainable in developing MOOCs.
Research on Students' Experience in Mooc-Based Flipped Classroom

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to explore the students' experience in MOOC-based flipped classroom practice in an undergraduate course named "Internet and Distance Education" in Zhejiang University. The course was designed as a Web-based and blended course, which mainly included two parts. In the first part of the course (first five weeks), students were invited to take a Coursera course named "Emerging Trends & Technologies in the Virtual K-12 Classroom." In the latter part of the course (last five weeks), students were invited to learn Sakai-based course chapter contents and to do an OER-related assignment. 16 undergraduate students majored in education attended the course and wrote their learning diaries on the Sakai platform. 231 diaries were collected at the end of the class. Nvivo 8 was used for the qualitative analysis. The results indicated that students have not only experienced rich emotional changes during the MOOC-based flipped classroom practice, but also have they enriched in knowledge, perspectives, and skills and improved their metacognitive abilities. Finally the authors provided some suggestions for implementing MOOC-based flipped classroom practice.

Abstract:This study aims to explore the current published research on Language Massive Open Online Courses (LMOOCs), outlining the types of papers, countries where studies were performed and institutions devoted to this field. Also, it intends to classify the reviewed literature following a general categorisation of MOOCs , and to identify the main trends and topics of interest for LMOOC researchers. Results show that there is still a lack of LMOOC-related articles in CALL (computer assisted language learning) journals, since most of the publications in the period reviewed (2012-18) are conference papers. The country in which most studies have been done so far is Spain and Universidad Nacional de Educacion a Distancia (UNED) is currently the most active institution in this area. Within the taxonomy established, the most popular categories of studies focused on LMOOC participants or providers and case studies. Systematic review of the published literature indicated that research trends in LMOOCs studies comprise: 1) conceptualisation of LMOOCs and their distinctive features; 2) attempts to find the most suitable model for language teaching and learning beyond the xMOOC/cMOOC dichotomy; 3) suitability of LMOOCs for languages for specific purposes (LSP) courses; 4) focus on the learners and their motivation and experience throughout the course; 5) reflection on the new role of the teacher; 6) instructional design and how it affects participants' learning and possible attrition; and 7) importance of social learning in LMOOCs. Nevertheless, LMOOCs is still an emerging field in need of further serious studies.

Abstract:Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is an online course aimed at unlimited participation and open access via the web. In addition to traditional course materials such as videos, readings, and problem sets, MOOCs provide interactive user forums that help build a community for students, professors, and teaching assistants. MOOCs have recently received a great deal of attention from the media, entrepreneurial vendors, education professionals and technologically literate sections of the public. MOOCs will provide free to access cutting edge courses to students of higher education in university system. Across the world, premier universities have put their courses online by setting up open learning platforms, such as edX. Commercial start-ups such as Coursera and Udacity have also been launched in collaboration with prestigious universities, offering online courses for free or charging a small fee for certification. The rapid expansion of MOOCs has sparked commercial interest from venture capitalists and major corporations who want to enter the Higher Education (HE) market using a MOOC approach. Students’ motivation to participate in MOOCs is a significant area of interest. Factors that influence students’ motivation to learn include future economic benefit, development of personal and professional identity, challenge and achievement, enjoyment and fun. What motivates the MOOC learner? Surveys conducted by researchers at Duke University show that student motivations typically fell into one of four categories viz. a) To support lifelong learning or gain an understanding of the subject matter, with no particular expectations for completion or achievement b) For fun, entertainment, social experience and intellectual stimulation c) Convenience, often in conjunction with barriers to traditional education options d) To experience or explore online education (Belanger and Thornton, 2013). In order to investigate the usage and effectiveness of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) of edX, Coursera, Udacity and Udemy in university system in India, a qualitative study was employed by the authors and semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with students of higher education in Indian universities and teaching professionals in university setups. The authors interviewed the participants based on a list of questions expanded from the three primary research questions based on the awareness, content, usage and learning outcomes. The questions were open-ended, which allowed the participants to freely express their experiences, thoughts, and feelings about the use of MOOCs. Abstract:MOOCs (massive open online courses) has swept the university education in the world, and it also shows the new challenges and opportunity for the traditional teaching model. Our paper gives a concept about MOOCs, and a summary about the development of home and abroad. We also analyze the four MOOCs' features: individuation, learning autonomy, course openness and teaching feedback degree, build the four-dimensional evaluation model for the traditional teaching model according to these features. Subjective questionnaire and quadrilateral area of law and quartile method are used to respectively and synthetically evaluate the courses on the traditional teaching model. This evaluation mainly is used to judge whether MOOCs is working in those courses, can help to further explore potential problems and limitations on their teaching mode, and provide reference and guidance for the development of MOOCs.
The MOOC as an alternative model for university education

Abstract:The MOOC model (Massive Open Online Course, for its acronym in English) has emerged as an innovative alternative for university education, allowing massive access to online courses taught by renowned institutions. This model is characterized by its open, flexible and autonomous nature, which has generated a significant impact on the educational landscape. One of the main advantages of the MOOC is its ability to broaden access to university education. Through online platforms, anyone can enroll in courses taught by professors from world-renowned institutions. This has democratized education by removing geographic and economic barriers that often limit access to traditional education. In addition, the MOOC model offers flexibility in terms of hours and location. Students can learn at their own pace, access course materials anytime, anywhere, and tailor their learning process to their individual needs. This promotes autonomous learning and self-regulation, valuable skills in an ever-evolving educational environment. MOOCs cover a wide range of topics and disciplines, giving students the opportunity to explore various fields of study and gain knowledge in areas of specific interest to them. This encourages the diversity of content and the personalization of learning, since students can choose the courses that best suit their needs and educational goals. However, the MOOC model also presents challenges. The lack of interaction and personalized feedback, due to the large number of participants, can make it difficult to deepen the concepts and resolve specific doubts. Additionally, MOOC course completion rates are often low, raising questions about student engagement and motivation. Despite these challenges, the MOOC as an alternative model for university education has proven to be a valuable tool. It has allowed access to education to people from all over the world, promoting flexibility, diversity of content and autonomous learning. As MOOCs continue to be explored and improved, it is expected that they will continue to play an important role in the educational landscape, providing enriching and transformative learning opportunities.

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this review article is to describe the benefits and challenges associated with massive open online courses (MOOCs) and to discuss the implications specific to medical imaging education and training. Methods: Peer-reviewed journal articles pertaining to MOOCs in higher education were analyzed to identify commonalities, relationships, and possible gaps in the literature. Results: Analysis revealed several repetitive themes and concepts regarding the use of MOOCs in higher education: theory of connectivism, instructors’ and students’ perspectives, and benefits and challenges. Implications for medical imaging education and training were also discussed. Conclusions: As web-based education and technology integration continue to increase, innovative approaches, such as MOOCs, will continue to develop. As higher education institutions continue experimenting with MOOCs, opportunities to engage individuals as lifelong learners will rise. Medical imaging students can use MOOCs to refine skills to prepare for an upcoming course along with the possibility of completing continuing education requirements.

Abstract:Although the foundation for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) was laid down around 2008, it is in the recent years that there has been observed the stupendous rise of MOOCs. Currently there has been much debate regarding its pros and cons. While access to high speed internet connection, computer systems and possessing a decent knowledge of the language that the course is instructed in (usually English) may prove to be barriers in some countries, this digital education offering has undoubtedly provided a learning edge to students and others, who can overcome these hurdles, irrespective of their geographical location, financial condition and time constraints. The two MOOC providers: Coursera and edX, have emerged as the major MOOC services over the years due to their tie-ups with numerous prestigious universities, free courses, user-friendly interface, and strong business model. The learning is primarily through videos and the MOOCs learners spend significant time in viewing course videos. This paper is the first survey-based study of its kind, to the best of our knowledge, conducted to explore the learner's perspective on video-viewing features offered by these two MOOC providers The survey assesses video-viewing related features on Coursera and edX namely, subtitle captions/transcripts, in-video quizzes, video duration, quality and video speed varying feature as experienced by the student participants, who have participated in both edX-offered courses and Coursera-offered courses.

Abstract:Given the emerging nature of massive open online courses (MOOCs), this paper is a synthesis of critical reflections, commentaries and cautionary tales from a variety of perspectives, looking at the issues facing education and considering whether traditional teaching methods have outlived their usefulness. In times where educational institutions are facing financial cuts and student debt increases, some argue free university online courses will be the saviour of education, (Koller et al, 2013). Others argue they could destroy centuries of tradition and threaten some of the world's greatest universities (Vardi 2012). This paper, builds on the research by examining some of the phenomenal changes to technology enhanced learning, being brought about by new technologies and business. It summarises some of the key discourses around MOOCs, which continue to generate heated debates and divide opinions about their credibility, value and importance. I argue that any form of technology that drives engaging and tailored education, precisely to the needs of the individuals, coupled with opening up education to those that cannot afford it, has to be a viable alternative and make traditional, academic institutions question their offerings and respond.

Abstract:The word E transformed everything is this world, as well as the whole globe itself. To a great extend this helps for eco friendly green world. In educational field, electronic medium has played a major role. It influenced and changed almost every component of it to electronic medium like e-book, online courses, etc. Throughout the world, leading universities are offering online courses voluntarily. Generally we refer to it as Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs). There are many debates going on related to success and consequences of MOOCs. Many are highlighting that these courses are self-paced, economical, and provide quality training to all irrespective of geographical constraints. But many other academic people go against these points and keep listing many other disadvantages of MOOCs. This paper explores the basics of MOOCs at the initial section. Following section will deal with advantages and disadvantages of MOOCs in general. We the researchers collected the details about the awareness of MOOCs among teachers and students in a higher education institution in Oman. We have also collected the details about MOOCs implementation and usage within Oman educational society. Based on the collected information, we have evaluated and presented the findings about MOOCs impact in Oman higher education. We have felt that doing appropriate improvements in MOOCs may become an imperative medium in Oman educational institutions. The suggestions are listed in the discussion and recommendation section.

Abstract:Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are a powerful new trend in distance education. Unlike traditional courses, the number of students enrolled in a MOOC is usually more than 10,000. This new mode of teaching represents various opportunities and challenges for teachers of Chinese as a foreign language who are interested in exploring this new mode. This article has five main sections. The first will introduce MOOCs, and the second will introduce the classification of MOOCs. The third section will cover the characteristics of MOOCs, and the fourth will introduce several MOOCs related to Chinese language education. The last section will demonstrate how Google Classroom can be used to develop your own MOOC.

Abstract:The United Nations adopted the sustainable development goal of “quality education” as one of its objectives. In emergency teaching and learning amid the outbreak in 2019, the emphasis has been placed on providing a versatile and easily accessible lifelong learning experience to ensure high-quality education. One type of online e-learning course is the massive open online course (MOOC). It provides a free course that may be taken whenever and anywhere. However, difficulties have come up regarding student performance, course completion, and dropping out as a result of quality assurance of e-learning platforms like MOOC. In order to keep students interested in the course until the end, this study will review and recommend MOOC strategies. The strategies in enhancing for MOOC engagement reveals that they include development, collaboration between educators and students, and evaluation. Self-regulation learning is a crucial motivation in retention from dropping out of the MOOC facilitates participation through the utilization of innovative pedagogies, as well as the interaction between students and educators on both the MOOC platforms and social media platforms according to research. Course information and instructional design are also found to attract learners to complete the course. Giving prizes for completing MOOC assignments and tests is an extra choice in retaining from dropping out the course. The contribution of study is MOOC online learning engagement strategies are introduced. By developing a good course design, collaboration between students and educators and evaluation performance based can enhance students’ engagement to completion of the course.

Abstract:MOOC, short for"Massive Open Online Course", originated in North America in 2008, and the curricu-lum model continues to innovate and develop since then. By 2012,MOOC has seen rapid development globally with the rise of a number of MOOC platforms such as Coursera, edX and Uadacity. The scale of enrollment and participation in the earliest mainstream MOOC courses has garnered a good deal of attention from international media, as well as from scholars from both education and other sectors, followed by a proliferation of publications on this much-debated new phenomenon. More literature on MOOC appear after the year of 2013 than the previous four years combined in quantity, and the quality of the literature is also higher than before. In this context, reviewing the research focuses and trends of international literature on MOOC is not only beneficial to domestic researchers to understand the frontier of development and research of MOOC globally and its educational possibilities, but also provides references for the lo-calization research and development of MOOC in China. This paper uses the information visualization technology from Citespace software to present a systematic review of the published MOOC literature from 2013-2015 . Two hundred and thirty-four papers are identified from the Web of Science ( WOS) database as the reference source. Through a co-cita-tion analysis, we found out that the research frontiers were on “individualization” and “massive open online course completion rate”. Through a co-word analysis, we found eight research areas and the research subjects were relatively scattered. Using the visual analysis of Citespace, combined with systematic reading of the literature, we found the fol-lowing five mainstream research areas on MOOC including studies on: learning processes,innovative teaching meth-ods,curriculum design and evaluation, MOOC-based new technologies and systematic policy of MOOC. Some new features of the MOOC research include:the use of learning analysis and design-based research and other innovative re-search methods, the relatively fragmented state of research content , limited data sources based on single or several course samples, with very little research on the common features of a large amount of MOOC courses, and inadequate attention on course design and the teachers.

Abstract:Abstract Massive open online courses (MOOCs) are a novel and emerging mode of online learning. They offer the advantages of online learning and provide content including short video lectures, digital readings, interactive assignments, discussion fora, and quizzes. Besides stand-alone use, universities are also trying to integrate MOOC content into the regular curriculum creating blended learning programs. In this 12 tips article, we aim to provide guidelines for readers to integrate MOOC content from their own or from other institutions into regular classroom teaching based on the literature and our own experiences. We provide advice on how to select the right content, how to assess its quality and usefulness, and how to actually create a blend within your existing course.

A Study of MOOCs：Student Learning and Course Evaluation

Abstract:Since 2013, Peking University has successively launched its first batch of MOOCs on edX and Coursera. The first phase is now completed, associated with relevant research and analysis. The research uses questionnaire meth-od to study students of seven MOOCs courses offered in Peking University. Using these student samples, this study aims to discover the group characteristics of these MOOCs students and their experience with and feedback to these courses. There are 1381 effective recycled samples in this research, within which male samples hold 64. 2%, female sam-ples 35. 8%. Obviously, male students are far more than female when choosing to join MOOCs. 45. 4% samples are 18 to 24 years old, while 32. 5% are 25 to 34 years old. Comparatively, these people have more learning abilities, more learning needs, and sufficient interests and curiosity about novelty. The majority of these learners are full-time professionals and university students. Almost half of them ( 47%) are university students, including undergraduates (29. 3%), postgraduates (10. 4%) and doctoral students (7. 3%). 70. 7% of these learners have bachelor's de-gree or below. Students think that the corresponding elective motivation contain “demand to update and extend knowledge in these fields”,“because of interests, curiosity or interest”,“want to challenge him or herself” and“in order to expe-rience courses of Peking University”, and they hold respectively 92 . 3%, 88 . 8%, and 69 . 3% and 58 . 4%. In the aspect of instructional design, more than 80% students think teaching videos are quite helpful. Instructors have also emphasized the key and difficult parts of the course, and have prompted students to higher level thinking. Average scores of each factor in factor analysis reveal that different groups of students have different opinions on some of the as-pects. Most students say that they have learned knowledge and skills they desire, and they wish to study the following courses. In addition, instructional objectives have been attained. Even so, students have also complained that the sup-port of peers and forums is weak. Their learning difficulties are maimly about “insufficient learning time”,“feeble subject backgrounds”,“unfa-miliar learning methods and schedules”, etc. Students have gained a lot through studying in MOOCs, such as“expe-riencing instructional mode”, “enhancing and consolidating disciplinary knowledge”, “expanding subject horizon and abilities”,“heightening interests and confidence on independent study”, etc. They have a variety of suggestions for these courses, focusing on course management, instructional design(teaching videos), evaluation of homework, on-course interaction and so on.

Abstract:MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) are an internet-based online education model that provides teaching resources and services to global users via web platforms. The development of MOOCs can be traced back to 2002, with significant acceleration in recent years. In education, MOOCs have been widely applied, such as in flipped classrooms and teacher training. They offer high flexibility and rich learning resources, significantly improving students' learning efficiency and reducing learning costs. However, MOOCs also face challenges, such as uneven teaching quality, lack of learner self-discipline, and insufficient humanistic care. For the sustainable development of MOOCs, there is a need to strengthen teacher training, improve teaching quality, enhance teaching evaluation and feedback, and perfect online education regulation. With the rapid development of information technology and the internet, MOOC education has become a prominent educational model. This paper aims to discuss the application of MOOCs in education in the new era, analyze the existing problems, and propose effective improvement measures to more effectively promote the development of MOOC education.

Abstract:Massive open online courses (MOOCs) have been the subject of much polarised debate around their potential to transform higher education in terms of opening access. Although MOOCs have been attracting large learner cohorts, concerns have emerged from the early evidence base centring upon issues of quality in learning and teaching provision, and there is clear evidence that impressive headline figures on MOOC enrolments often contrast with extremely low course completion rates. To address these concerns of quality, low retention and the need for engagement, this paper provides a review and case study of MOOC provision. The review considers the current position of MOOCs as a change agent for higher education provision, and the case study considers lessons learnt from an Astronomy MOOC which uses the Open2Study platform. This paper asks about new engagement strategies needed for face‐to‐face and online learners, and explores how course retention can be improved in online provision.

Abstract:Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have gained tremendous popularity in the last few years. Thanks to MOOCs, millions of learners from all over the world have taken thousands of high-quality courses for free. Artificial intelligence (AI) has played an important role in making MOOCs what they are today. By exploiting the vast amount of data generated by learners engaging in MOOCs, AI techniques have been proposed to improve our understanding of MOOC participants and enable MOOC practitioners to deliver better courses. These approaches have also greatly improved student experience and learning outcomes through constructing intelligent and personalized learning trajectories. In this paper, we first review the state-of-the-art AI research making an impact on MOOCs education, emphasizing on works which aim to enhance our understanding of student learning behaviours, improve student engagement, and improve learning outcomes. We then offer an overview of important future research to carry out in sub-fields of AI to enable MOOCs to reach their full potential.
