Abstract:The multi-image variety is a subvariety of Gr(1,P^3)^n that models taking pictures with n rational cameras. We compute its cohomology class in the cohomology of Gr(1,P^3)^n, and from there its multidegree as a subvariety of (P^5)^n under the Pl\"ucker embedding.

Abstract:The Bogomolov multiplier of a group is the unramified Brauer group associated to the quotient variety of a faithful representation of the group. This object is an obstruction for the quotient variety to be stably rational. The purpose of this paper is to study these multipliers associated to nilpotent pro-$p$ groups by transporting them to their associated Lie algebras. Special focus is set on the case of $p$-adic Lie groups of nilpotency class $2$, where we analyse the moduli space. This is then applied to give information on asymptotic behaviour of multipliers of finite images of such groups of exponent $p$. We show that with fixed $n$ and increasing $p$, a positive proportion of these groups of order $p^n$ have trivial multipliers. On the other hand, we show that by fixing $p$ and increasing $n$, log-generic groups of order $p^n$ have non-trivial multipliers. Whence quotient varieties of faithful representations of log-generic $p$-groups are not stably rational. Applications in non-commutative Iwasawa theory are developed.

Projections of Higher Dimensional Subspaces and Generalized Multiview Varieties

Abstract:We present a generalization of multiview varieties as closures of images obtained by projecting subspaces of a given dimension onto several views, from the photographic and geometric points of view. Motivated by applications in Computer Vision for triangulation of world features, we investigate when the associated projection map is generically injective; an essential requirement for successful triangulation. We give a complete characterization of this property by determining two formulae for the dimensions of these varieties. Similarly, we describe for which center arrangements calibration of camera parameters is possible. We explore when the multiview variety is naturally isomorphic to its associated blowup. In the case of generic centers, we give a precise formula for when this occurs.

Abstract:We study the following problem in computer vision from the perspective of algebraic geometry: Using m pinhole cameras we take m pictures of a line in P3 . This produces m lines in P2 and the question is which m -tuples of lines can arise that way. We are interested in polynomial equations and therefore study the complex Zariski closure of all such tuples of lines. The resulting algebraic variety is a subvariety of (P2)m and is called line multiview variety. In this article, we study its ideal. We show that for generic cameras the ideal is generated by 3×3 -minors of a specific matrix. We also compute Gröbner bases and discuss to what extent our results carry over to the non-generic case.

Projections of Curves and Conic Multiview Varieties

Abstract:We present an algebraic study of the projection of plane curves and twisted cubics in space onto multiple images of pinhole cameras. The Zariski closure of the image of the projection of conics is a conic multiview varieties. Extending previous work for point and line multiview varieties, we use back-projected cones to describe these varieties. For two views, we provide the defining ideal of the multiview variety. For any number of views, we state when the simplest possible set-theoretic description is achieved based on the geometry of the camera centers. Finally, we investigate the complexity of the associated triangulation problem and conjecture the Euclidean distance degree for the conic multiview variety for two cameras.

Mult-Projective Models for Jacobian Varieties of Genus Two Curves

Abstract:A set of multi-homogeneous equations for the Jacobian of a genus two curve is given. The approach used is to write down affine equations for the Jacobian minus various tranlations of the Theta-divisor by [2]-division points, and then to write down affine glue equations for the overlaps. Taking multi-projective completions for all of these then yields a complete multi-projective two-dimensional variety whose points are in one-to-one correspondence with degree zero divisor classes on the curve (i.e. the Picard group). This multi-projective variety then becomes a complete projective two-dimensional variety under the Segre imbedding.

Positivity of tropical multidegrees

Abstract:We define the multidegrees of a tropical variety. We prove that the positivity of a multidegree of a certain tropical variety is governed by the dimensions of the images of the tropical variety under suitable projection maps. As an application, we give a tropical proof of the criterion of the positivity of the multidegrees of a closed subscheme of a multi-projective space, originally proved by Castillo et al.

Abstract:We study algebraic varieties associated with the camera resectioning problem. We characterize these resectioning varieties' multigraded vanishing ideals using Gröbner basis techniques. As an application, we derive and re-interpret celebrated results in geometric computer vision related to camera-point duality. We also clarify some relationships between the classical problems of optimal resectioning and triangulation, state a conjectural formula for the Euclidean distance degree of the resectioning variety, and discuss how this conjecture relates to the recently-resolved multiview conjecture.

Abstract:The Euclidean distance degree of an algebraic variety is a well-studied topic in applied algebra and geometry. It has direct applications in geometric modeling, computer vision, and statistics. We use non-proper Morse theory to give a topological interpretation of the Euclidean distance degree of an affine variety in terms of Euler characteristics. As a concrete application, we solve the open problem in computer vision of determining the Euclidean distance degree of the affine multiview variety.

Abstract:We give a criterion for a collection of polynomials to be a universal Gröbner basis for an ideal in terms of the multidegree of the closure of the corresponding affine variety in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^N$. This criterion can be used to give simple proofs of several existing results on universal Gröbner bases. We introduce fine Schubert polynomials, which record the multidegrees of the closures of matrix Schubert varieties in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^{n^2}$. We compute the fine Schubert polynomials of permutations $w$ where the coefficients of the Schubert polynomials of $w$ and $w^{-1}$ are all either 0 or 1, and we use this to give a universal Gröbner basis for the ideal of the matrix Schubert variety of such a permutation.

Abstract:We study several properties of multihomogeneous prime ideals. We show that the multigraded generic initial ideal of a prime has very special properties, for instance, its radical is Cohen-Macaulay. We develop a comprehensive study of multidegrees in arbitrary positive multigraded settings. In these environments, we extend the notion of Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals by means of a standardization technique. Furthermore, we recover or extend important results in the literature, for instance: we provide a multidegree version of Hartshorne's result stating the upper semicontinuity of arithmetic degree under flat degenerations, and we give an alternative proof of Brion's result regarding multiplicity-free varieties.

Abstract:We study Hilbert schemes of quadrics of dimension $k \in \{0,1,2,3\}$ on smooth Gushel-Mukai varieties $X$ of dimension $n \in \{2,3,4,5,6\}$ by relating them to the relative Hilbert schemes of linear subspaces of dimension $k + 1$ of a certain family, naturally associated with $X$, of quadrics of dimension $n - 1$ over the blowup of $\mathbf{P}^5$ at a point.

Abstract:Consider a generalized Grassmannian G/P⊂P embedded in a projective space by a complete linear system of a positive generator of the Picard group. For a very general hypersurface H⊂P , we study subvarieties of G/P∩H that are not of general type (or not of positive geometric genus). When the degree of the hypersurface is not small, we show that, under a certain condition on the parabolic subgroup P , such subvarieties are union of lines. Our result is a generalization of Clemens-Ran's result concerning G/P=Pn .

Special subvarieties in the locus of intermediate Jacobians of cubic threefolds

Abstract:We study special subvarieties, i.e., subvarieties containing a dense subset of CM points, of the moduli space $A_5$ of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension five, generically contained in the locus of intermediate Jacobians of cubic threefolds. The analogous question for Jacobians of curves is related to a conjecture of Coleman-Ort and has been studied by Shimura, Mostow, De Jong-Noot, Rohde, Moonen, Oort, Frediani, Ghigi and others. Adapting methods of Frediani, Ghigi and Penegini, we give a sufficient condition ensuring that the closure of the image of a family of smooth cubic threefolds with prescribed automorphisms via the period map is a special subvariety of $A_5$. By the work of Allcock, Carlson and Toledo, it is known that the family of cyclic cubic threefolds gives rise to a special subvariety. Analyzing the action of subgroups of the automorphism group of the Klein cubic threefold, we discover new examples of positive-dimensional special subvarieties arising from families of smooth cubic threefolds that are not contained in the locus of cyclic cubic threefolds.

Abstract:It is a fundamental problem in geometry to decide which moduli spaces of polarized algebraic varieties are embedded by their period maps as Zariski open subsets of locally Hermitian symmetric domains. In the present work we prove that the moduli space of Calabi–Yau threefolds coming from eight planes in ${\mathbb{P}^3}$ does not have this property. We show furthermore that the monodromy group of a good family is Zariski dense in the corresponding symplectic group. Moreover, we study a natural sublocus which we call hyperelliptic locus, over which the variation of Hodge structures is naturally isomorphic to wedge product of a variation of Hodge structures of weight one. It turns out the hyperelliptic locus does not extend to a Shimura subvariety of type III (Siegel space) within the moduli space. Besides general Hodge theory, representation theory and computational commutative algebra, one of the proofs depends on a new result on the tensor product decomposition of complex polarized variations of Hodge structures.

Abstract:Let $\G(k,r)$ be the Grassmannian of $k$--subspaces in $\Proj^r$ embedded in $\Proj^{N(k,r)}$, with $N(k,r)={{r+1}\choose {k+1}}-1$, via the Plücker embedding. In this paper, extending some classical results by Gallarati (see \cite {Gal1,Gal2}), we give a sharp upper bound for the number of independent sections of $H^0(\G(k,r), Ø_{\G(k,r)}(m))$ vanishing on a subvariety $X$ of $\G(k,r)$ such that the union of the $k$--subspaces corresponding to the points of $X$ spans $\Proj^r$.

Abstract:We study the behavior of multidegrees in families and the existence of numerical criteria to detect integral dependence. We show that mixed multiplicities of modules are upper semicontinuous functions when taking fibers and that projective degrees of rational maps are lower semicontinuous under specialization. We investigate various aspects of the polar multiplicities and Segre numbers of an ideal and introduce a new invariant that we call polar-Segre multiplicities. In terms of polar multiplicities and our new invariants, we provide a new integral dependence criterion for certain families of ideals. By giving specific examples, we show that the Segre numbers are the only invariants among the ones we consider that can detect integral dependence. Finally, we generalize the result of Gaffney and Gassler regarding the lexicographic upper semicontinuity of Segre numbers.
