Abstract:We present a new topological method to study the discriminantal loci of an algebraic variety defined in a product of projective spaces. Our approach relies on an efficient use of groupoid to describe the monodromy. As an example, we treat here the discriminantal loci of an hypersurface of bi-degree $(m, n).$

Abstract:For every positive integer $N$ we determine the Enriques--Kodaira type of the Humbert surface of discriminant $N^2$ which parametrises principally polarised abelian surfaces that are $(N,N)$-isogenous to a product of elliptic curves. A key step in the proof is to analyse the fixed point locus of a Fricke-like involution on the Hilbert modular surface of discriminant $N^2$ which was studied by Hermann and by Kani and Schanz. To this end, we construct certain "diagonal" Hirzebruch--Zagier divisors which are fixed by this involution. In our analysis we obtain a genus formula for these divisors, which includes the case of modular curves associated to (any) extended Cartan subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z})$ and which may be of independent interest.

Abstract:In this paper, inspired by work of Fano, Morin and Campana--Flenner, we give a full projective classification of (however singular) varieties of dimension 3 whose general hyperplane sections have negative Kodaira dimension, and we partly extend such a classification to varieties of dimension $n\geq 4$ whose general surface sections have negative Kodaira dimension. In particular we prove that a variety of dimension $n\geq 3$ whose general surface sections have negative Kodaira dimension is birationally equivalent to the product of a general surface section times $\p^{n-2}$ unless (possibly) if the variety is a cubic hypersurface.

Abstract:We consider subvarieties $N$ of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$, the moduli space of genus $g$ Riemann surfaces with $n$ marked points, that are totally geodesic with respect to the Teichmüller metric. The Deligne-Mumford boundary of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ decomposes into strata, each of which is essentially a product of lower complexity moduli spaces -- in such spaces there is a natural notion of totally geodesic. We show that the boundary locus of $N$ in any such stratum is itself totally geodesic. Furthermore, we prove that each such boundary locus decomposes into prime pieces, and for each such piece the projection to each factor is locally isometric in an appropriate sense.

Scanning the moduli of smooth hypersurfaces

Abstract:We study the locus of smooth hypersurfaces inside the Hilbert scheme of a smooth projective complex variety. In the spirit of scanning, we construct a map to a continuous section space of a projective bundle, and show that it induces an isomorphism in integral homology in a range of degrees growing with the ampleness of the hypersurfaces. When the ambient variety is a curve, this recovers a result of McDuff about configuration spaces. We compute the rational cohomology of the section space and exhibit a phenomenon of homological stability for hypersurfaces with first Chern class going to infinity. For simply connected varieties, the rational cohomology is shown to agree with the stable cohomology of a moduli space of hypersurfaces, with a peculiar tangential structure, as studied by Galatius and Randal-Williams.

Abstract:We extend the Hirzebruch-Milnor class of a hypersurface $X$ to the case where the normal bundle is nontrivial and $X$ cannot be defined by a global function, using the associated line bundle and the graded quotients of the monodromy filtration. The earlier definition requiring a global defining function of $X$ can be applied rarely to projective hypersurfaces with non-isolated singularities. Indeed, it is surprisingly difficult to get a one-parameter smoothing with total space smooth without destroying the singularities by blowing-ups (except certain quite special cases). As an application, assuming the singular locus is a projective variety, we show that the minimal exponent of a hypersurface can be captured by the spectral Hirzebruch-Milnor class, and higher du~Bois and rational singularities of a hypersurface are detectable by the unnormalized Hirzebruch-Milnor class. Here the unnormalized class can be replaced by the normalized one in the higher du~Bois case, but for the higher rational case, we must use also the decomposition of the Hirzebruch-Milnor class by the action of the semisimple part of the monodromy (which is equivalent to the spectral Hirzebruch-Milnor class). We cannot extend these arguments to the non-projective compact case by Hironaka's example.

On the singular loci of higher secant varieties of Veronese embeddings

Abstract:In this paper we study singular loci of higher secant varieties of the image of the $d$-uple Veronese embedding of projective $n$-space, $v_d(\mathbb{P}^n) \subset \mathbb{P}^{N={n+d\choose d}-1}$. We call the closure of the union of all the $(k-1)$-planes spanned by $k$ points on $X$ the `$k$-th secant of $X$' for a given embedded variety $X \subset\mathbb{P}^N$ and denote it by $\sigma_k(X)$. For the singular loci of $\sigma_k(v_d(\mathbb{P}^n))$, it has been known only for $k\le3$. As investigating geometry of moving tangents along subvarieties, we determine the (non-)singularity of so-called the `$m$-subsecant locus' of $\sigma_k(v_d(\mathbb{P}^n))$, consisting of $\sigma_k(v_d(\mathbb{P}^m))$ with any $m$-plane $\mathbb{P}^m \subset \mathbb{P}^n$. These loci with arbitrary $k,d,m,n$ show an interesting trichotomy between generic smoothness, non-trivial singularity and trivial singularity. In many cases, they can be served as a new source for the singular locus of the $k$-th secant other than a trivial one, the $(k-1)$-th secant variety. We also consider the case of the $4$-th secant of $v_d(\mathbb{P}^n)$ by applying main results and computing conormal space via a certain type of Young flattening. In the end, some generalization and discussions for further development are presented as well.

Abstract:We attach two binary codes to a projective nodal surface (the strict code K and, for even degree d, the extended code K' ) to investigate the `Nodal Severi varieties F(d, n) of nodal surfaces in P^3 of degree d and with n nodes, and their incidence hierarchy, relating partial smoothings to code shortenings. Our first main result solves a question which dates back over 100 years: the irreducible components of F(4, n) are in bijection with the isomorphism classes of their extended codes K', and these are exactly all the 34 possible shortenings of the extended Kummer code K' , and a component is in the closure of another if and only if the code of the latter is a shortening of the code of the former. We extend this result classifying the irreducible components of all nodal K3 surfaces in the same way, and we fully classify their extended codes. In this classification there are some sporadic cases, obtain through projection from a node. For surfaces of degree d=5 in P^3 we determine (with one possible exception) all the possible codes K, and for several cases of K, we show the irreducibility of the corresponding open set of F(5, n), for instance we show the irreducibility of the family of Togliatti quintic surfaces. In the fourth part we show that a `Togliatti-like' description holds for surfaces of degree 6 with the maximum number of nodes= 65: they are discriminants of cubic hypersurfaces in P^6 with 31 (respectively 32) nodes, and we have an irreducible 18-dimensional family of them. For degree d=6, our main result is based on some novel auxiliary results: 1) the study of the half-even sets of nodes on sextic surfaces, 2) the investigation of discriminants of cubic hypersurfaces X, 3) the computer assisted proof that, for n = 65, both codes K, K' are uniquely determined, 4) the description of these codes, relating the geometry of the Barth sextic with the Doro-Hall graph.

Abstract:The strata of the moduli spaces of Abelian differentials are non-homogenous spaces carrying natural bi-algebraic structures. Partly inspired by the case of homogenous spaces carrying bi-algebraic structures (such as torii, Abelian varieties and Shimura varieties), Klingler and Lerer recently showed that any bi-algebraic curve in a stratum of the moduli space of Abelian differentials is linear provided that the so-called condition $(\star)$ is fulfilled. In this note, we construct a non-linear bi-algebraic curve, resp. surface, of Abelian differentials of genus $7$, resp. $10$.

On the duals of smooth projective complex hypersurfaces

Abstract:We show first that a generic hypersurface $V$ of degree $d\geq 3$ in the complex projective space $ \mathbb{P}^n$ of dimension $n \geq 3$ has at least one hyperplane section $V \cap H$ containing exactly $n$ ordinary double points, alias $A_1$ singularities, in general position, and no other singularities. Equivalently, the dual hypersurface $V^{\vee}$ has at least one normal crossing singularity of multiplicity $n$. Using this result, we show that the dual of any smooth hypersurface with $n,d \geq 3$ has at least a very singular point $q$, in particular a point $q$ of multiplicity $\geq n$.

Abstract:For complex projective smooth surface $X$, let $M$ be the coarse moduli scheme of rank-two stable sheaves with fixed Chern classes. Grasping the birational structure of $M$, for example its Kodaira dimension, is a fundamental problem. However, in the case where $\kappa(X)>0$, the study of this problem has not necessarily been active in recent years. In this article we survey the study of this problem, especially for the case where $\kappa(X)=1$ and $c_1=0$. We will also survey some research on the structure of singularities of $M$, and a minimal model program of $M$. While explaining motivations, we raise several unsolved problems.

Abstract:We investigate the manifold $\cal{M}$ of (real) quadratic forms in n > 1 variables having a multiple eigenvalue. In addition to known facts, we prove that 1) $\cal{M}$ is irreducible, 2) in the case of n = 3, scalar matrices and only them are singular points on $\cal{M}$. For $n = 3$, $\cal{M}$ is also described as the straight cylinder over $\cal{M}$$_0$, where $\cal{M}$$_0$ is the cone over the orbit of the diagonal matrix $\diag(1,1,-2)$ by the orthogonal changes of coordinates. We analyze certain properties of this orbit, which occurs a diffeomorphic image of the projective plane.

Singularities of secant varieties from a Hodge theoretic perspective

Abstract:We study the singularities of secant varieties of smooth projective varieties using methods from birational geometry when the embedding line bundle is sufficiently positive. More precisely, we study the Du Bois complex of secant varieties and its relationship with the sheaves of differential forms. Through this analysis, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for these varieties to have $p$-Du Bois singularities (in a sense that was proposed in [SVV23]). In addition, we show that the singularities of these varieties are never higher rational, by giving a classification of the cases when they are pre-1-rational. From these results, we deduce several consequences, including a Kodaira-Akizuki-Nakano type vanishing result for the reflexive differential forms of the secant varieties.

Abstract:We study the birational geometry of hypersurfaces in products of weighted projective spaces, extending results previously established by J. C. Ottem. For most cases where these hypersurfaces are Mori dream spaces, we determine all relevant cones and characterise their birational models, along with the small $\mathbf{Q}$-factorial modifications to them. We also provide a presentation of their Cox ring. Finally, we establish the birational form of the Kawamata-Morrison cone conjecture for terminal Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in Gorenstein products of weighted projective spaces.

Abstract:We study irreducible surfaces of degree d in $\mathbb{P}^3$ that contain a line of multiplicity d-1 (monoidal surfaces) or d-2 (submonoidal surfaces). We relate them to congruences of lines and Cremona transformations. Many of our results are not new and can be found in the classical literature, we give them modern proofs. In the last section, we extend some of our results to hypersurfaces of arbitrary dimension. We define two commuting Cremona involutions in the ambient space associated to a linear subspace of multiplicity d-2 contained in the hypersurface. Both leave the hypersurface invariant, but one acts as the identity on the hypersurface.

A Eudoxian study of discriminant curves associated to normal surface singularities

Abstract:Let $(f,g): (S,s) \to (\mathbb{C}^2, 0)$ be a finite morphism from a germ of normal complex analytic surface to the germ of $\mathbb{C}^2$ at the origin. We show that the affine algebraic curve in $\mathbb{C}^2$ defined by the initial Newton polynomial of a defining series of the discriminant germ of $(f,g)$ depends up to toric automorphisms only on the germs of curves defined by $f$ and $g$. This result generalizes a theorem of Gryszka, Gwoździewicz and Parusiński, which is the special case in which $(S,s)$ is smooth. Our proof uses a common generalization of formulas of Lê and Casas-Alvero for the intersection number of the discriminant with a germ of plane curve. It uses also a theorem of Delgado and Maugendre characterizing the special members of pencils of curves on normal surface singularities. We apply it to the pencils generated by all pairs $(f^b, g^a)$, for varying positive integral exponents $a, b$, following a strategy initiated by Gwoździewicz. This is similar to the Eudoxian method of comparison of magnitudes by comparing the sizes of their positive integral multiples.

Moduli spaces of sheaves on Fano threefolds and K3 surfaces of genus 9

Abstract:A complex smooth prime Fano threefold $X$ of genus $9$ is related via projective duality to a quartic plane curve $\Gamma$. We use this setup to study the restriction of rank $2$ stable sheaves with prescribed Chern classes on $X$ to an anticanonical $K3$ surface $S\subset X$. Varying the threefold $X$ containing $S$ gives a rational Lagrangian fibration $$\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7) \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}^3$$ with generic fibre birational to the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_X(2,1,7)$ of sheaves on $X$. Moreover, we prove that this rational fibration extends to an actual fibration on a birational model $\mathcal{M}$ of $\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7)$. In a last part, we use Bridgeland stability conditions to exhibit all $K$-trivial smooth birational models of $\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7)$, which consist in itself and $\mathcal{M}$. We prove that these models are related by a flop, and we describe the positive, movable and nef cones of $\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7)$.

IVHS via Kuznetsov components and categorical Torelli theorems for weighted hypersurfaces

Abstract:We study the categorical Torelli theorem for smooth (weighted) hypersurfaces in (weighted) projective spaces via the Hochschild--Serre algebra of its Kuznetsov component. In the first part of the paper, we show that a natural graded subalgebra of the Hochschild--Serre algebra of the Kuznetsov component of a degree $d$ weighted hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}(a_0,\ldots,a_n)$ reconstructs the graded subalgebra of the Jacobian ring generated by the degree $t:=\mathrm{gcd}(d,\Sigma_{i=0}^na_i)$ piece under mild assumptions. Using results of Donagi and Cox--Green, this gives a categorical Torelli theorem for most smooth hypersurfaces $Y$ of degree $d \le n$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$ such that $d$ does not divide $n+1$ (the exception being the cases of the form $(d,n) = (4, 4k + 2)$, for which a result of Voisin lets us deduce a generic categorical Torelli theorem when $k \ge 150$). Next, we show that the Jacobian ring of the Veronese double cone can be reconstructed from its graded subalgebra of even degree, thus proving a categorical Torelli theorem for the Veronese double cone. In the second part, we rebuild the infinitesimal Variation of Hodge structures of a series of (weighted) hypersurfaces from their Kuznetsov components via the Hochschild--Serre algebra. As a result, we prove categorical Torelli theorems for two classes of (weighted) hypersurfaces: $(1):$ Generalized Veronese double cone; $(2):$ Certain $k$-sheeted covering of $\mathbb{P}^n$, when they are generic. Then, we prove a refined categorical Torelli theorem for a Fano variety whose Kuznetsov component is a Calabi--Yau category of dimension $2m+1$. Finally, we prove the actual categorical Torelli theorem for generalized Veronese double cone and $k$-sheeted covering of $\mathbb{P}^n$.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a formula for the degree of the 3-secant variety of a nonsingular projective variety embedded by a 5-very ample line bundle. The formula is provided in terms of Segre classes of the tangent bundle of a given variety. We use the generalized version of double point formula to reduce the calculation into the case of the 2-secant variety. Due to the singularity of the 2-secant variety, we use secant bundle as a nonsingular birational model and compute multiplications of desired algebraic cycles.
